Mrs Yiu, as a social worker back in 15 years ago, set up the Chinese Cancer Society of Victoria (CCSV) as she realised that there is not any organisation in the Chinese community helping Chinese cancer patients. She wanted to put in some of her time and effort in supporting those patients and their family members. Three cancer patients turned up for the first gathering and their positive response had reaffirmed Mrs Yiu s vision; since then she has committed herself in this mission. 15 years on and being served by many volunteers, CCSV has become a very popular and valued organisation to many cancer-affected families.
Last Saturday I attended the CCSV 15th Anniversary Celebration and met a number of CCSV members and community representatives in support of CCSV for long. I was very impressed by the members who amid their life threatening condition are still very passionate about life and have been enjoying close relationship with each other through their mutual encouragement. There are many devoted volunteers who have offered so much to support cancer patients despite they have not experienced the same themselves.
Many would have thought that religion could be of great help to these patients struggling to survive. CCSV is open to different religious needs and rather focuses in practical life care and support including healthy life style, social activities, information and counselling, psychological service with a view of building a positive life attitude and value.
It was Mrs Yiu s initial vision and action, with her loving heart, which kicked off enormous support over the past 15 years from the community in helping people in need. They all resemble the good Samarian in the Bible who was ready to offer time, money and effort in response to plea for help. I recall a Chinese saying Don t refrain from giving minor generosity as every bit of our kindness may trigger off a much bigger response in bettering our society.
