After last week’s heavy rains, the Fraaiuitzichtfarms, just outside Burgersfort on theLydenburg Road , was still cut off from theoutside world by Friday as the still strongflowing Spekboom river washed part of theaccess bridge away. The community, got theirbread, toilet paper and Platinum Gazette(middle photograph left) via inflatable boat. OnFriday afternoon the community, variousbusinesses and benefactors started to repairthe bridge. 65 loads of stone, rocks, sand andgravel later at about 20:30 that evening, vehicles could again drive over the bridge.Fraaiuitzicht Community say thay would like tothank Ngululu Transport, PLM Boerdery,Burgersfort Sand & Klip, Precrete, NaranjaCitrus, Modikwa Platinum Mine, EasternChrome Mines, Wildevy Manne and HF EngineRepairs for all their assistance. The risk posed by HIV in Southern Africa isvery real. While many a business respondedto the challenge, the implementation of HIV /AIDS workplace programs are often on a trailand error basis and not according to anauditable and certifiable standard. In 2005 theSABS started to develop a local standard forthe management of HIV and AIDS in theworkplace as a way of addressing this need. The standard, SANS 16001, was published forcomment in March 2007 and launched soonafterwards.ASA Metals / Dilokong Chrome Mine submittedits HIV / AIDSM a n a g e m e n tSystem for certi-fication against theSANS 16001 on17 – 19 January2012 after severalyears of develo-pment. LaunaNeeves, the exter-nal auditor fromDekra said that thecertification auditwent extremelywell and re-commend fullcertif ication ofASA’s program. She highlightedthe unique riskassessments donethat helped to
manage the HIV / AIDS risk in a focused andstructured manner, the exponentialimprovement since the start of 2011 and thecommitment by Elneth Thulare, the HIVCoordinator. For ASA Metals, the value of thecertification is that it contributes to theentrenchment of core values, specificallyEmployee Wellness and Zero Harm. The HIV Management Representatives at ASAMetals / Dilokong Chrome Mine werecongratulated for being successful in receivingthe SANS 16001 HIV / AIDS ManagementSystem Certification.

No books for schoolsSchools started, but no text books to use. Thiswas the situation at most schools in the areathis week.Especially the grade R - 3 classes are affectedas they were due to start a new learning planthis year. Teachers went on courses to gettraining for the plan, but are now left withoutbooks to use.The books had been ordered well in advanceduring 2011 and were supposed to be deliveredearly December before the schools closed.Should schools chose to buy the booksprivately, they will have to spend on averageR50 000 to equip average size classes
between grade R and grade 3.One of the plans offered by the Department ofEducation was that teachers use the outline ofwhat they learned in their training and gathertheir own information from sources like booksand the internet. Some schools bought a singleset of books and now photocopy the lessonsfor the learners. This is however not a solution for all the schoolsas many do not have the resources tophotocopy the books. This means that learninghas not started for many youngsters this year.In the meantime products such as glue stickswere delivered to some schools. These are ofsuch an inferiour quality that schools aredumping it as soon as it arrives. Glue sticksare dry and unusable. Pencils are broken andbreak as far as they are being sharpened whilepens are dry from the start. By the time of goingto print yesterday morning, the schools had noindication as to when they will be receiving thenew textbooks.

Mnr. Doen eers navorsing. Weesobjektief wanneer jy so ‘n besluit neem”.
Mr Reagan Komanaand Mr PhillipMashoeng said: “Thetop people found ingovernment are oftenthe ones doing crimethrough fraud etc. Thatis why people can’t dobusiness. They don’tget the business fromgovernment due tocorruption. It isimpossible forinvestors in ourcountry to fightcorruption, SouthAfricans must fight it.If we had a business,we would not go. Tosurvive, you have tostay in South Africa, itis your country”.
Right: Ms. Mmathabo Modipi said: “I thinkwe need them here. If they go overseas, who will support us in South Africa? Thegovernment and the police must startdoing their job to stop the crime”.
The Grant Thornton International BusinessReport this week reported that at least 20% ofSouth African business owners seriouslyconsidered leaving the country during 2011.The main reasons for this were the high crimerate and the political climate. 62% of thoseconsidering emigration listed the high crime rateas a contributing factor.About 27% of these business owners camefrom KwaZulu-Natal, 23% from Gauteng and11% from the Western Cape.According to the report, the number of businessowners directly affected by crime was slightlyless than in previous years, but remainsunacceptably high. The Grant Thornton International BusinessReport gives quarterly reports from more than11 000 businesses over 39 different countries.Other business growth obstacles listed bybusiness owners in 2011 were the over-regulation of business in South Africa as wellas loads of red tape. Over-regulation ofbusiness was for the first time rated higher thana lack of skilled people. The frustrationshampering growth included the lack ofavailability of skilled workers to employ and poorgovernment service delivery that affected them.We asked readers what they think about thisand would they support someone consideringemigration due to these factors?

Me. Nicole Wafer said: “When it is yourbusiness, it is your decision to decide toleave when it is not working due tothings like crime and politics. After seeing water streamingfrom the reservoir on the premises, PlatinumGazette made the effort and drove past thispublic asset run by the Sekhukhune DistrictMunicipality. Reaction: Oh no!. Not only iswater streaming from the reservoir (and wasstill streaming from it late in the afternoonwhen the reporter returned from Phiring), theterrain is certainly not a rose garden, but thegeneral impression was that of disrepair. Fewvehicles were on the terrain, so presumablythey are still in tip top condition?
