This time it is not thegovernment or mines
Wednesday morning saw a protest ofanother kind just outside Burgersfortwhere the road to Apiesdoring andManoke was blocked by a group ofresidents.
The tyres were burning, but thistime it was a not a protest agianst poorservice delivery by the government oralleged crookery by a mine. Whatsparked the burning tyres seems to be aproblem between taxi operators inBurgersfort and surrounds andaccording to the protesters, what theywant in terms of a taxi service.
While the Police arrived en masse onthe scene the protest was peacefull andmost of the Police vehicles left the scenesoon, while a small number of Policeofficers stayed behind to try and sort outthe problem. One of the protestersPlatinum Gazette spoke to, told therepoerter that the blocking of the roadstems from the fact that the EasterLeolo Taxi Association claimed theresidential areas in manoke andApiesdoring for themselves and hasdriven the so-called inner city taxis fromthe area. (The inner city taxis or‘floaters’ are mainly the ramshackleones driving slowly in town whileoperating their hooters continiouslylooking for passengers).
But here to problem lies, say theresidents. When Eastern Leolo is busyis town and they have enoughpaaengers, the people from Apiesdoring
and Manoke have no taxiservice and they must walkto town, so the protesters feltthat it would be best forEatern Leolo to allow innercity operators to againservice their areas. Acces tothe area was restored laterin the day.
The big tree at theApiesdoring turn-off (left)is famous for hosting themessage of the day, whilethe protesters convergearound Police officers todiscuss their transportproblem (bottom).
