The good The Bad Good news for Burgersfort and environs is that the platinum price on international markets is steadily on the rise, albeit very slowly. With the large number of platinum mines in the area, this should be good news, as Anglo Platinum’s CEO told the media earlier this year “We are looking at a price of more than $1300 an ounce”. That is now happening and as readers will see on page two of the newspaper, there is enough interest to open up more mines in the area. Mr Nicolau was at the time he made the statement, not too happy about the strenghtening of the rand versus the US dollar, as it negates the higher price paid for platinum when exchanged for rand. The rand remains strong, as can be seen in the bottom graph, not playing into the hands of platinum miners. What is also happening is that the biggest consumer of platinum, the international automotive industry, is still in trouble and demand for the metal is still low. On the other hand ferrochrome producers is almost in full production, although the price remains low, furnaces is in operation and retrenchments has stopped. Analysts is of the opinion that although the economy shows signs of life, the uptake will be very slow. So it seems if the current local slump will follow the national trend. etter Style! etter Value! BooysendalPlatinumMine arealityNortham Platinum Ltd has announced itwould start construction on theBooysendal platinum mine by early 2010and the first phase would cost about R3000 million.

Booysendal is roughly situatedbetween Mototolo and Everest platinummines in the triangle between Steelpoort,Lydenburg and Roossenekal.

Northam, a unit of black ownedMvelaphanda Resources, owns thedeepest platinum mine in the world and issaying that the development of the vastnew Booysendal mine will expand itsproduction options.

The company said in a statement onthe JSE that it had completed a feasibilitystudy for Booysendal, which could morethan double Northam Platinum’s output, pushing it to rank fourth after the world’sthird-biggest platinum producer, LonminPlc.

Glyn Lewis, the company’s chiefexecutive says “Our intention remains tofund the project through a combination ofa rights issue, internal retentions (owncash) and medium-term bank debt”.

“Booysendal is living up to ourexpectations and is likely to be a

significant, long-life producer, and one ofthe new-generation PGM (platinum groupmetals) mining projects of the future.”

Lewis said the first phase or module ofthe project could give rise to sales of some130 000 ounces of mainly platinum andpalladium, rhodium, gold a year, rising bya further 115 000 ounces per annum fromthe second phase, to a total of 245 000ounces for both phases.

The first phase of the project’s life-of-mine is expected to exceed 20 years, during which period further productionexpansions would be developed.

Lewis said South Africa’s power utility,Eskom has undertaken a feasibility studyfor a new substation to be situated on theBooysendal property.

Northam Platinum is the only fullyindependent black-owned platinum groupmetal producer listed on the JSE.

Northam will begin the construction ofan access road and water pipeline and

start the boxcut for the module 1 on-reef decline in the first half of 2010.

First concentrate from module 1 isanticipated in 2013, reaching fullproduction

in 2015.

development

Australian Stock Exchange listed International Goldfields (IGC) has signed aformal asset sale agreement with fellow listed Nkwe Platinum to sell its 15percent stake in its Tubatse project for $60 million Australian dollar.

The companies announced in June that Nkwe would acquire the stake, which will boost its interest in the Tubatse project to 74 percent.

IGE and Nkwe had an option agreement in place since late 2008, thatenabled Nkwe to negotiate on an exclusive basis to acquire IGC ‘s stake in thethree farms that made up the Tubatse project.

Nkwe holds a joint-venture option agreement with Xstrata to jointlydevelop the Tubatse-Garatau project, with the bigger company having anoption to fund the development of two mines and a concentrator, with a statedgoal of producing one-million ounces of PGMs a year.

The Tubatse project currently had a joint ore reserve committee complaintresource of about 45-million ounces of three platinum elements, and gold.

The project is in the same area as the Modikwa and Marula Platinummines. Recently some controversy surrounded the project locally when thecommunity in the area staged a march in front of Nkwe Platinum’s premises inSteelpoort, saying the company’s controlling shareholder, Genorah Resources, has reneged on agreements with the community while the company was busywith the bankable feasability study in the area on communal land. As far ascan be determined the bankable feasability study is still under way.

Nkwe also onthe move...

All quiet for six monthsTheUK Takeover Panel Executive has imposed a deadline of 17:00 on 20October 2009, by which time Xstrata plc must, unless the Takeover PanelExecutive consents otherwise, either announce a firm intention to makean offer for Anglo American under Rule 2.5 of the UK Takeover Code (the“Code”) or announce that it does not intend to make an offer for AngloAmerican.

If Xstrata announces that it does not intend to make an offer forAnglo American, Xstrata and any person acting in concert with it will, except with the consent of the Takeover Panel Executive, be bound by therestrictions contained in Rule 2.8 of the Code for six months from the dateof such announcement.

Earlier this year Xstrata has proposed ha merger of equals withAnglo American, which was subsequently rejected by Anglo American.Anglo has welcomed the ruling of the Takeover Executive, saying theperiod of uncertainty around the issue should come to an end.

Golfers ‘rest in peace’On Saturday, 3 October the ‘Rest in peace’ golf day took place at Tubatse Chrome Club.A large group of players participated in this fun event. Each player received a small cross with a tag with his or hername on it. The player’s handicap was added to the par and this gave each player the amount of strokes they would havebefore planting their cross and walking off the course.

For the fansFor the fansLydenburg – Platinum Gazette, just likemany rally fans in the area, pitched earlyin Lydenburg last week Saturday to catcha glimpse of the Toyota Dealer 400 rally, which form part of the ABSA off roadseries. And what a glimpse it was! Thephotographs were taken early, but for theteams it was a long day. The DonaldsonNissan Navara team got back to winningways when South African championsDuncan Vos and Ralph Pitchford won athrilling SP Class battle in the ProductionVehicle category.Nissan were beaten for the first time in sixoutings last time out at the Highveld 400,but bounced back in fine style with Vosand Pitchford scoring their fifth win of theseason. In the closest finish of the year theNissan pair were only 24 seconds ahead ofCastrol Toyota Hilux crew Hein Lateganand Chris Birkin.Third were Ivar Tollefsen and QuinEvans, in a second Donaldson NissanNavara, with Anthony Taylor/RobinHoughton (Castrol Toyota Hilux) andHannes Grobler and Juan Mohr, in a thirdDonaldson Nissan Navara, fourth andfifth respectively.

The top eight were rounded out by thefactory diesel Ford Racing Ranger of NeilWoolridge/Kenny Skjoldhammer, the SPLaser Nissan Navara of Alfie Cox/JurgenSchroder and the RFS Toyota Hilux ofChris Visser and Japie Badenhorst. In theclosest finish anyone can remember in the

SP Class era, the top eight cars werecovered by less than six minutes. The unlucky crew were Taylor andHoughton who won the Friday prologue todetermine race start positions. Theystarted 46 seconds ahead of the threeDonaldson Nissans but quickly lost thelead when they picked up a puncture. Then, on the last of the three laps thatmade up the race, Taylor and Houghtonwere right on the tail of Vos and Pitchford.A determined effort to get past the Nissanended when the Toyota picked up anotherpuncture.“It was a final fling from us on a rockysection with no dust,” said Taylor. “Thesecond puncture was the end.“After changing the wheel we could not getthe car started and that dropped usfurther back.” Lategan and Birkinmounted a late challenge thatmomentarily raisedToyota hopes. But they were to run out ofrace distance in what was their bestperformance of the season. There was alsoa tight finish in Class D where Dewaldvan Breda and Johann du Toit, in theNortham Toyota Hilux D4D, finished just14 seconds ahead of local Mpumalangacrew Johan and Werner Horn in theMalelane Toyota Land Cruiser. The winsaw van Breda and du Toit move a stepcloser to the Class D championship.Third were Coetzee Labuscagne andJohan Gerber (Raysonics NissanHardbody) with early championship leaderCliff Weichelt, now partnered by Johann

Smalberger in the N1 4x4 Toyota HiluxD4D, salvaging valuable driverchampionship points with fourth place. There were only two classified finishers inClass E with Leeroy Poulter and RobHowie, in the Ferodo Nissan Hardbody, finishing one minute ahead of reigningchampions Jannie Visser and Joks le Rouxin the RFS Toyota Hilux. With the 4x4Megaworld Toyota Hilux entries of DeonVenter/Ian Palmer falling by the wayside,Visser and le Roux move into thechampionship lead with one event to go.Veterans Nardus Alberts and GeoffMinnitt struck a massive blow for theolder generation when they won Class A inthe Special Vehicle category. It was thebiggest surprise of the season with Albertsand Minnitt, in the Wrapsa BAT, camehome ahead of the Regent Racing BATcrewed by Mike Whitehouse and MathewCarlson. Whitehouse and Carlson werearound five minutes behind Alberts andMinnitt with Naeem Moosajee and FerozDoodha Moultson (Tyre Rack Jimco)maintaining their 100 percent finishrecord with third place.Fourth and fifth were Nick and RyanHarper, in the Atlas Copco BAT, withMark Corbett and Rudi Balzer fifth in theCentury Racing CR1 4x4. It was the firstfinish for the CR1 in 15 starts, withCorbett and Balzer having to overcome adisastrous Friday prologue to determinerace start positions.
