Two wards uncontested08 December, when By-elections intwo vacant wards in Burgersfort weresupposed to be held, went by virtuallyunnoticed election wise as only theANC has nominated candidates.Their candidates were declaredcouncillirs as their nominiations wereuncontested by other political parties.(See the results of the election in theIEC graph). As far as PlatinumGazette could determine, it was notthat other parties did not have anycandidates available. A COPEmember told the newspaper “it is notworth it at this late stage to try andfight an election in a ward. It isunneccessary waste of time, moneyand energy. We will rather wait for nextyear’s local government elections”.
Anglo Platinum Limited held its Bokamoso Skills Development Graduation Ceremony at theSekhukhune FET College’s Dr CN Phatudi Campus in Praktiseer last week Friday.
Over 500 youths attended a portable skills development programme, providing themtraining opportunities in areas such as plumbing, bricklaying, tiling, welding and catering.Over 3000 learners in communities around platinum communities participated.
In partnership with both provincial and local government, the company offered trainingprogrammes that enable participants to create their own employment opportunities inaddition to participating in the national infrastructure development programme.
The skills development model that was used is integrated and covers technical training,workplace/ experiential training, entrepreneurship training and exit opportunities.
Also on Friday the company handed over Community Trust Funds to the traditionalleaders of various communities around Twickenham Platinum Mine.
Delivering the keynote address at the function, Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor,Ralepane Mamekoa, told the audience that partnerships between the mines and businessesare the key to economic development and job creation in the area. He said more than 27companies are active in mining in the Greater Tubatse municipal area. If only onecompany, in this case, Anglo Platinum, can achieve so much in such a short time, development and education in the area can be hugely accelerated if all the companies dotheir part.
Because of the sheer scope of the project, certificates where handed to students inbatches, and photographers struggled to get the large groups into the lens for groupphotographs.
Cheques (ranging in the region of R1 million) were handed individually to traditionalauthorities before it was time for lunch and entertainment for all.
Ceremony markscommunity involvement

‘Nationalisation ofmines, betterservices’ - ANCYL
The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) held itsthird subregional conference in Tubatse inBurgersfort last week Saturday.
During the conference seaveralresolutions were taken. On miningdelegates said that Tubatse is rich inminerals and yet its people are poor, conditions of the roads and other facilitiesare deteriorating because of the influx ofpeople attracted by mining activities.
They supported the call by the ANCYLnational leadership that mines must benationalised, saying “ If mine bosses resistour programme of nationalisation, they mustpack and go to the West. Mines must bebiased towards employing the majority oflocal young people who are piling up thestreets without any hope of decent life”.
On governance they agreed that servicedelivery is poor and lashed out against, corruption and the inability of themunicipality to employ local young people toaccelerate service delivery.
“Tubatse is amassed with skilled youngpeople who are been compromised by theso-called girlfriend deployment’ of relativesand friends with no competencies. Wetherefore resolved that ‘a new broomsweeps clean’. The next council must becomposed in a way that young people willplay a major role in governance” they stated
in a news release after the conference, adding “ laziness, corruption, poorperformance by current councillors will notbe tolerated as it compromises delivery ofservices”.
Delegates warned young people againstthe dangers of the Aids pandemic, saying“young people themselves must promote anin-depth awareness of HIV/Aids in theirrespective communities. The one condom, one round motto must precede any conjugalrelationship amongst young people.Substance abuse must be minimised”.
The conference expressed its concernabout the low standard of education incommunities and the early drop-outsamongst young people. The conferencecalled on all spheres of government to takepart in uplifting the standard of educationincluding local mines by awarding areasonable number of bursaries, learnerships and experience training, expressing the view that “mines in the areahave a responsibility to plough back skillsappropriate to their operations”.
During the conference MankgaseMashabela was elected Chairperson,Pelaelo Matemane, Deputy Cahiarperson,Emmanuel Makgoga, Secretary, MmaseloMotshwane, Deputy Secretary and HalindaMojalefa, Treasurer.
