Dilokong plant commissionedASA Metals successfully commissioned itsnew 600 000 ton per annum pelletisingand sintering plant during July 2009 withthe first sintered pellets produced at 12:20on Sunday the 12 July.

The successful commissioning of thepelletising and sintering plant signifiesthe achievement of the first majormilestone in ASA Metals’ expansionproject. The plant will beneficiatechromite concentrate into pellets that willbe supplied to ASA Metals’ new furnaces.The utilization of pellets in the newfurnaces will boost overall charge chromeproduction capacity to around 400 000tons per year.

Mr Herman Smit, COO of ASA Metals,says the construction and commissioningof the plant proceeded according to plan.“My expectations were definitely exceededand I think the team involved in thisproject needs to be congratulated. I wouldalso like to thank ASA Metals’ employeesfor the effort and input that went intoensuring that this project was successful.It is important to acknowledge that timespent with family was sacrificed duringthe last couple of months to ensure the intime completion of the project. Themanagement at ASA Metals appreciatesthis and would like to thank employees’families for their patience and support. Ibelieve that we have achieved somethingspecial here which would not have beenpossible without a joint effort andcontinued good will. It is somewhat unfairto single out individuals that played a

major role during such a big project, but aspecial word of appreciation should go toKleinjan du Toit (Expansion Manager),Juan du Preez (Senior Project Manager)and Lukas Pieterse (Raw MaterialProcessing Manager) who managed thisproject on behalf of ASA Metals.”

The pelletising and sintering plant isscheduled to ramp up to full production bythe end of the calendar year. ASA Metalshas started during January 2008 with anextensive development program toincrease their ferrochrome productioncapacity with 300 percent. Thisdevelopment programme, called ProjectSunrise, included the design andconstruction of a 600 000 ton per yearpelletising and sintering Plant as well astwo 66 MVA closed furnaces, each with itsown pre-heaters.

It is envisaged that the first Furnacewill be commissioned towards the middleof August 2009 and that the secondfurnace will be commissioned by the end ofOctober 2009 well within the timeschedule, budget and safety objectives.The Project Sunrise team is exceptionallyproud of their safety achievements ofwhich the most important one is theachievement of 3,5 million lost time injuryfree ((LTIF) hours and are still goingstrong to increase this to over 4 million.This is an excellent achievement if oneconsiders that there were more than 2800construction workers on site during thepeak times of which more than 35 percentcame from the local communities.

LTIF was 306 697 when the first andonly lost time injury accurse.

An employee were carrying a beamand walking backwards when he trippedover another piece of metal and broke hisankle. The total hours for project as on 26July 2009 were 920 745. The total project

sunrise LTIF is 3 484 910. During theproject the management team attended athree week training course in Finland.

They compiled their own trainingmodules and provided training to allcontrollers as well as all the fieldattendants.

The erection of the first structure took place on the 7 August 2008. It took 338 dayup to the date of the first pellet production.Heat-up started on 2 July 2009 and the first pellets were produced on 12 July 2009at 12:20. The heat-up took 45 minutes short of 10 days.The total team were involved during the commissioning of the plant. The designcapacity of the plant is 600 000 tons per annum.

Projects were not stopped because of the market conditions, in fact new contractswere signed and upgrade of the Ben plant was also added.The company built 48 new houses in Montaganeng, Burgersfort during the project.

Fledglingforum hasproblems

The recently established Greater Tubatse Business Forum held a meeting at the Greater Tubatse Municipalitycouncil chamber this week amidst an internal leadership struggle.

Mr Steve Mokota said that the chairman of the Forum, Mr Mmuso Serage, was suspended last week Fridaybecause of irregularities and misconduct. The other purpose of the meeting was to discuss the way forwardregarding the relationship between small and medium business enterprises with large contractors in the area. MrMokota said it is the forum’s wish to engage in discussions with large contractors to explore ways in which smallbusinesses, who are members of the forum can benefit from getting work from large businesses who can subcontractthem.

Regarding the leadership problem he said he was acting as chairman of the Greater Tubatse Business Forumwhile Mr Serage is suspended, pending an investigation into the allegations.

Speaking to the newspaper after the meeting, Mr Serage said he did not receive any formal communicationabout his suspension. As such he regarded himself still as the chairman of the organisation. he denied any wrongdoing, saying that he could prove to the members that all his actions thus far has been in the interest of theorganisation. He said he will seek an appointment with the Municipal manager next week to discuss the dissent andother maaters relating to the forum.

‘Ex’ ward 23committeemember in courtMr Joseph Mohlala of Dresden was electedas a ward committee member towards theend of last year, but unfortunately therules committee that oversees theelections, could not let Mr Mohlala beinaugurated as thequidelines for women’sequity was notfollowed.

In terms of theseguidelines a womanwas needed in MrMohlala’s place. Sincethen Mr Mohlala hasa problem. He says heis democraticallyelected and has a rightto serve on the wardcommittee.

Since then he hasattended variousmeetings at theMunicipality and, andleft them on his ownaccount in the midst ofproceedings to ensurethat he can take hisplace on the ward committee.

Some of his actions has also infuriatedthe authorities and they claim that some ofhis conduct was intimidating to them andindividuals.

Last week Thursday Mr Mohlalaarrived at Burgersfort Magistrate’s courtfor another case, but was soon arrested at

the court on a charge of intimidationrelating to his efforts to let himself beheard to be recognised as a wardcommittee member in Dresden. Soonafterwards he appeared in court and was

released on bail ofR1000. The case waspostponed until 19August.

So what ishappening now? Therules committee hasrecommended to themunicipal council thatnew ward elections beheld in Dresdenaccording to the rightrules and guidelines,taking gender equalityinto account.

BUFC Juniorswins L’burgJuniorsThe Burgersfort United Football Club Juniors played a match against team Barcelona(Lydenburg Juniors) on Sunday, 2 August.The match was played at Lydenburg Primary. The players performed very well,especially considering that it was the first match ever played against an outside team.During the first half the teams were very evenly matched, but during the second half theBurgersfort side showed their strength.They first scored through a penalty goal and then managed to take another goal from theside.The players of the match were Suhail Gori who scored both goals and Abdullah Amodwho was the best goalkeeper.The Club is planning a tournament just after the September holidays. They are alsoinviting all children between the ages of 8 and 15 to join them for fun soccer games.“We are very proud of the team and they played extremely well,” said their coach FaizalAbdullah.

Run like the windPupils from Joshua Generation’s two campuses participated in the South AfricanChristian School Sports Association (SACSSA) zonal athletics on Saturday 1 August. Theevent was held at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium in Ermelo and the children braved the coldto earn themselves a place amongst the top three in many items. Those who came first,second or third (all on photographs below) will go through to the next round when theywill participate in the regional round in Ermelo on 15 August.
