The Ohrigstad SAPs held a ‘Women in law enforecement operation’. This was part of their Women’s Month celebra-tions.

The women were led by the Ohrigstad Station Com-mander, Capt. Mashego. She was joined by women from the Greater Tubatse traffi c department, female offi cers from the Leboeng SAPS and women from the Ohrigstad

CPF. The women held a roadblock and

searched 59 vechicles, checked 91 people and issued 3 tickets for various traffi c violations.

Fast 11 launched for development in Kgautswane

On Saturday Kgautswane was a hive of activity as local soccer fans pre-pared for the launch of the Fast 11 team.

The team’s owner, Mr. Aubrey Kabelo Mamphoke (better known as Guider)recently bought SAB league status for the team.

Three professional soccer players,

Katlego Mphele, Pienaar Themba Xoli and Tshegofatso Katlego Mashego joined the event.

They encouraged the local players to work hard, stay away from drugs, alcohol and cigarettes and they can also become role models.

Messages of support were delivered and the team encouraged to do their best.

Mr. Mamphoke was praised for his initiative and aim to develop soccer in the area. The event was attended by young and old and included entertainment by local artists and food afterwards.

Burgersfort police offi cers were moni-toring protest action on the R555 road on 11 August when they stopped a white bakkie. The vehicle was loaded with bundles of copper cables.

The driver, a 35-year old male was taken into custody and will be charged with possession of suspected stolen property. (Photo-graphs & Informa-tion: Const. Victoria Maluleka, Burgers-fort SAPS. Suspects’ face pointelized by Platinum Gazette).

The Burgersfort SAPS in partnership with the SAPS Youth Desk, Love Life, the Com-munity Policing Forum (CPF) and Women Against Crime hosted a crime awareness campaign on 14 August 2015.

The theme of the campaign was “Say no to love under the tree”. This was chosen as couples stopping under trees or behind bushes in town and just outside town are often victims of car hijackings and robber-ies. The campaign also formed part of the planned Women’s Month activities.

The group will visit the Boerboomkraal school on 21 August 2015. Donations will also be made.

Women’s Month will be concluded with and event at which four women who assisted the Burgersfort SAPS in fi ghting crime will be recognised for their efforts. This event will take place at Highlands College.

The public can also start looking out for sign boards that will alert them to high risk zones for crimes such as hijackings and robberies. If you see them, steer clear of parking and relaxing there. Always be alert and don’t give criminals an opportuni-ty to target you.

(Information & photographs: Const. Victoria Maluleka, Burgersfort SAPS).

Say no to “love under the tree”

On 11 August 2015 the Burgersfort SAPS were busy with an operation that included visits to second-hand goods shops.

After a spate of housebreakings the SAPS targeted these shops to try and recover some of the stolen property.

During the course of the operation 6 men were arrested for dealing with sec-ond-hand goods without a licence. They vary in nationality and included a Somalian at the Khadima Centre near Boxer and fi ve

Indian nationals trading at the Khadima Centre near Boxer and at Platinum City Complex.

The SAPS is discouraging owners of second-hand shops to buy stolen property. The SAPS will continue to monitor shops and if suspected stolen property is found, the traders will be arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen goods.

Winterveld Festival Programme

This weekend is Winterveld Festival Week-end and you are invited!

Yes, this annual festival is growing and will this year be bigger than ever with everything from stalls, kids entertainment, competitions to live performances by world class artists.

Friday will kick off with team building activities, a brandy and wine pairing, a magic show and the fi rst round of the talent compe-tition. You have a special talent – enter now and come and showcase it at the festival. You could walk away with some awesome prizes. Anything from singing, dancing and other special acts are welcome. Dare to be there!

The evening will round off with live perfor-mances by various artists including Touch of Class, Karlien Husselman, Bongi, Izak Davel, Chris Forrest and Elvis se seun. There will be enough to buy for the hungry and the cash bar will ensure that everyone can enjoy their tipple while having a great time.

Saturday the fun will continue. The day will start off with the soap box derby. This tra-dition is a fun one that sees teams compete on a route through Winterveld Bottom Village. Teams can still enter for this event and see if they can beat last year’s champions.

Another magic show about Super Heroes will take place in the morning and then the fi rst round of the Mr. and Miss. Winterveld Competition. This competition caters for different age groups and all the beauties of the area are encouraged to attend. Last year the winner of the Miss Winterveld Festival, Milicent Mashele cam from the Leboeng/Kgautswane area. (The winner of last year’s talent competition was Carina Knoesen – a

singer from Steelpoort. The second place was taken by a team taking the breath away with their ballroom dancing act. Anything goes and your talent and beauty needs dis-covery – enter now!)

On Saturday teams will be able to once again compete in the potjiekos competition – Master Chef style. Yes, teams will be able to choose some ingredients while others will be given to them. Apart from the taste of their potjie, their team spirit and fun themes will also be judged. You can also still enter for this, but be quick as time is running out.

The Strongman event is always a big hit and this year it will be happening on Satur-day afternoon again. Come see how unbe-lievably heavy objects are being picked up and moved. Perhaps you could also show your strength? Live music and performances will happen throughout the day with the event drawing to an end with Gerhard Steyn and Mandoza on stage.

The event is proudly brought to the com-munity by Samancor ECM and therefor the ticket prices are being kept as reasonable as possible. You can buy a ticket for Friday or Saturday for R50 per adult and R30 per child (up to primary school). Weekend tickets are also available at R80 per adult and R50 per child (up to primary school). The tickets are available online at computicket, but will also be sold at the entrance gate at Winterveld Bottom Village, Recreation Club. This event is one that should not be missed.

1 John 1:5 (NIV)“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all”.

We were not family, but for travelling purposes we were when four grown men with baggage for three days travelled from Lydenburg to Nelspruit earlier this year in a Chevrolet Captiva to catch a fl ight to a General Motors South Africa sponsored event in Port Elizabeth.

With the last row of seats of the seven seater down for baggage requirements, the editor of Platinum Gazette and colleague André Coetzee of the Highlands Panorama News were completely com-fortable on the back seat. The vehicle proved to be perfect for our ‘family’ outing as it slid effortless down Longtom Pass. Just before we arrived at the airport emergency measures was called for when a vehicle unexpectedly moved across the road. The car came to a halt in a blink of the eye.

This trip fl ashed through the editor’s memory as he took a 2.2 diesel turbo Chevrolet Captiva (four cylinder) from Westvaal Steel-poort to Maseven next to De Hoop dam for a few photographs.

Same car, different powertrain. Same space, superb comfort es-pecially with the optional 18-inch wheels, black leather and sunroof. Strip those nice things away and you can have this front wheel drive family vehicle for R398 000. Three-year service plan (60 000 km), fi ve-year warranty (120 000 km) and roadside assistance included.

The car has enough grunt with the six-speed automatic gearbox in ‘normal’ mode to gun past slower traffi c on a busy road. ‘Eco’ mode (which is no doubt much more economical) is not much fun (to be honest, it is more of a pain).

The comfort of the vehicle does not end on the black top, but extends to the dirt where the vehicle’s ground clearance is a large positive.

The car has all the gizmotronics and safety features you expect (no satnav though) and the black interior is suffi ciently grand without too much chrome to make it very pleasing on the eye in harsh sun-light. And the dual zone air conditioner works like a charm. You can certainly hear it is a diesel if you stand next to the car, but inside with the windows closed, you will not notice the sound. If you are in the market for a family vehicle with more than enough space, give the Captiva some think. Phone Westvaal Steelpoort at 013 230 9519 if you are interested.
