Last week Friday, 24 August 2012, DwarsrivierChrome Mine participated in the AnnualSteelpoort Mining and Technical Exhibition. TheMine sponsored six local SME’s (Small & MediumEnterprises) who specialise in the provision ofvarious goods and services in the mining industry. The local entrepreneurs displayed services andproducts that are offered by their respectivecompanies which Dwarsrivier utilizes. The reason for the initiative was to give exposureto capable SME’s in the region and to create aplatform for the establishment of businesslinkages between local entrepreneurs andestablished manufacturers.Feedback received from one of the suppliers (LaFancy Kay) was that the exhibition has given them

the opportunity to network and interact with differentmine officials and other stakeholders in differentsectors. It also allowed them to explore new productsfrom other suppliers (exhibitors) who attended theexhibition that may be viable for both theirmanufacturing and service operations. The Dwarsrivier/SME marquee attracted a lot ofattention, from visitors who merely wanted to knowabout the Mine, to potential customers who came tosee what is an offer by the SME’s.

Mr Phillip Manzini said: “I think it is good. I was working in the gold mines and movedto the platinum mines. There is a difference. It will be better if they do their wagenegotiations like the gold mines. I also hope it will prevent future strikes”. With him isMs Phindiwe Malebe.

Mr Clement Banyini said: “I think it willhelp the mines because all the employeeswill get the same percentage increase oreveryone will strike. On the one hand it isgood but on the other hand the platinummines are more than the gold mines and ifthey all go on strike what will happen toour economy?”

Mnr Charles Ambrose sê: “Dit sal goedwees as hulle saam onderhandel. Dan valalmal mos onder een kombers. Ek dink ditsal stakings in die toekoms verminder”.

Mr Innocent Zondi said: “I think it willwork. The platinum mines are tooseperate. I was working for a gold mineand we would be able to tell what wouldhappen with the wage negotiations, butwith the platinum mines it is difficult topredict. It will have a positive impact ifthey work through one body”.

Mr Mark Geddes said: “It would be goodto belong to a board or something like thegold guys. It makes it easier fornegotiations for everyone as they areworking from the same platform. In theend it will boil down to job satisfaction forthe employees”.

Mr Pakeng Mohlala said: “Bargainingcouncils represent everyone and it is veryeffective”.

Ms Mokgadi Tebele said: “No, I don’tthink it will work if they have one bodynegotiating on everyone’s behalf. It willtake too much time. Mine people are soimpatient - there will be chaos”.

Ms Lina Mohlatlole and Ms Kedibone Magagula said: “That will be good because it willbe fair for everyone - also for the ones that are voiceless. Yes, we’ll want all theplatinum mines to join a central structure for wage negotiations”.

Left: Ms Hazel Mqhayi said: “I wouldencourage them to join and make one bigstructure. Ja, I’m thinking it can preventstrikes in future”.

Mnr Louis Etzebeth sê: “Dit kan werk ja.Hulle moet die veiligheid van die menseingedagte hou en saam werk”.

Mr Abraham Masango said: “I think it willhelp if they have one negotiating body. With platinum it does not matter - there isone market and one price - regardless ofhow much they produce. It will be better ifthey have one bargaining chamberbecause the market is one”.

In South Africa’s mining industry wagenegotiations are done through variouschannels. The gold and coal mines workthrough the Chamber of Mines of SouthAfrica who facilitates a centralised bargainingprocess on behalf of everyone.Platinum mines are however each doing theirown wage negotiations. After the recent tragedy at Lonmin’sMarikana Platinum Mine where strikingworkers and the police were involved in abloody clash, pressure is mounting for theplatinum industry to also have a collectivebargaining structure.According to Northam Platinum’s CEO GlynLewis there are “very definite benefits tocentralised bargaining”.We asked readers how they feel aboutcreating a centralised bargaining structurefor the platinum mines and whether theythink it could have an influence on futurelabour disruptions in the industry.

To centralise wage negotiation or not?
