How would you like to lose weight, sleep better, improve your mood and lower stress and anxiety while also
working to prevent diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and certain cancers? Well, get moving!
We all know exercise is good for us, yet many of us find it difficult to get going and stay committed –
especially through the winter. Many of my patients have found success by starting slowly and taking it
gradually. Set realistic goals and work toward them – you can’t expect to go out and run five kilometres if your body isn’t used to it. Also, you don’t need to go it alone; working out with a friend or in a group can help keep you on track.
Most importantly, do something you enjoy! If you don’t like it, you’ll find excuses not to do it.
Still stumped? Here’s an A to Z list of activities that will get your blood pumping; many require nothing more than decent
shoes and comfortable clothes:
Aerial arts (check out circus training at the rec centres); Biking; Climbing; Dance; Exercise balls (great for core strengthening and stability); Football (North American or European!); Group Power (weightlifting classes); Hiking; Ice skating; Jogging; Kung fu; Lunges (and other equipment-free strength exercises);
Mountain biking; Nia (a flowing dance/martial arts/yoga mix);
Walking; X-fit (also called cross-fit); Yoga; and, finally, Zumba.

In my final article on sustainable design, I’d like to ask you to think about the “100-mile” principle when you undertake a project.
Much of what goes into homes these days comes from far afield – whether it’s granite from India, tile from China, moulding from Chile or lumber from God-knows-where.
In our drive to reduce the cost of
building, we’ve outsourced jobs while also outsourcing environmental impacts.
At the same time, our homes have lost any sense of regional identity or appropriateness.
This switch to imports has reduced our choices considerably, and
globalization just accelerates the trend.
Here, in the midst of abundant forests, local wood products are almost impossible to find as people
steer toward those that are perceived as cheaper and more disposable.
Obviously, there
are a great many things in a home that need to come from a centralized industrial source — nails, glass, flashing, roofing, insulation and appliances, to name some obvious examples — and these are essential for durable and comfortable dwellings.
But this still leaves a huge opportunity for 100-mile buildings, which, by contrast,
use as many locally sourced materials as possible in their construction, finishing and appointment.
On Vancouver Island, lumber, stone, timber, hardwoods and siding products are potentially abundant.
Taking advantage of that abundance will contribute to a vibrant local economy while enhancing the look and quality of the local housing stock.
100-mile buildings generally cost more to build, but they will be the heirlooms of the future.
They’ll also benefit the local economy and allow us to control our impact on the environment.
Isn’t this the true definition of sustainability?
If you have any questions about sustainable home design, I’d love to hear
them — just call or email me.
Thanks for reading, and happy (sustainable) building!
