The Connecticut Technology Transfer Center recognized 69 transportation professionals receiving their Connecticut Road Master, Connecticut Road Scholar and Connecticut Legal Traffic Authority certificates on October 23, 2008. Over 100 certificate recipients and their guests enjoyed a breakfast celebration at the University of Connecticut main campus in Storrs. The Road Master, Road Scholar and LegalTraffic Authority programs consist of a comprehensive series of workshops and roundtable discussions that provide participants with knowledge-based and skills-based training for road management and safety activities. State transportation leaders congratulating the group included Joseph Marie, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Transportation, George Poirier, Assistant Division Administrator, Federal Highway Administration and James Mahoney, Executive Program Director of the Connecticut Transportation Institute. Dr. Mun Choi, the new Dean of the University of Connecti- cut School of Engineering welcomed the graduates. Tiger Mann, Town of New Canaan, and a graduate of all three programs, was the 2008 graduate keynote speaker. There was much to celebrate at this year’s graduation, the 25 th anniversary of the Technology Transfer Center, our 500 th Road Master Graduate and 13 individuals who have now graduated from all three of our programs. The Technology Transfer Center reached a milestone in 2008 – 500 Road Master Graduates

In this Issue Congratulations Class of 2008!The Connecticut Technology Transfer Center recognized 69 transportationprofessionals receiving their Connecticut Road Master, Connecticut RoadScholar and Connecticut Legal Traffic Authority certificates on October 23,2008. Thirty four salt storage facilities operatedby city and state transportation agencies inseven states and two Canadian provinceshave been awarded the 2008 Excellence inStorage Award. The award recognizes highstandards of environmental consciousnessand effective management of wintermaterials storage.

Another 63 facilities were cited for“continuing excellence” for sustainingaward-winning programs recognized inthe first 20 years of the program.

“It is heartening that we have morewinners this year than ever before,”noted Salt Institute president Richard L.

Hanneman in announcing the awards atthe annual Congress of the AmericanPublic Works Association in New Orleans.“These facilities are being operated to thehighest standards of environmental andworker safety and are a real credit to thegovernments they represent. Good storageis a great investment, but it does requireinvestment of money and managementattention. These facilities are worthy to becalled excellent in their operations.”

HAVE A PROFESSIONAL CHECK AND SERVICE THE FOLLOWING:

• Ignition system, including wiring and plugs• Battery level and battery cables• All belts and hoses• Antifreeze level and freeze zone• The braking system including rotors, pads, calipers or shoes and drums

You should have a personal monthly routine maintenance schedulethat has been developed from your vehicle’s owners manual.

THIS WOULD INCLUDE:

• Maintaining proper levels of antifreeze/coolant, oil, transmission fluid,brake fluid, steering fluid.

• Maintaining proper tire inflation, tread, and sidewalls.• Checking all lights front, rear, marker, brake, directions signals, etc.• Checking windshield wiper arms, replacing worn wiper blades, and topping off

windshield washer fluid. (In winter, the washer fluid must be changed to a typethat freezes at a lower wind chill).

IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO HAVE AN EMERGENCYWINTER DRIVING KIT IN YOUR TRUNK THAT INCLUDES:
