Introduction

In this Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project, we worked as a group of two to propose a project that serves either as Recreation area, Study Enhancement Area, Rest area, Food and beverage (dining area) or Commercial area (exclude food and beverage) which is not bigger than 30m X 30m area in the Taylor Lakeside Campus itself. This proposal should benefit both the client and the surrounding community. Besides some main content, we could also add in information such as some basic information of the authority and cost planning document. After making several analysis around the campus, we finally came out with the idea of creating a food and beverage area just located beside the sport complex at Taylor Lakeside Campus.

Site Analysis

Our site

Our site is located at the abandoned golf court in front of the Futsal, tennis and

basketball court in Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. According to what we

had observed, the rectangular artificial golf court has been left bare as no one

is using it and it is locked for such a long time. Therefore, the spaces are

wasted. The golf court is covered with fake carpet grass and it is an open area

without a roof on top as well as the site is surrounded with net. Our site

includes the golf court and also a little part of the red brick pathway. Its area is

approximately 35m x 13m. We had observed that our site has no washroom

and seats for people to watch the matches provided. Besides, there is also no

food stall to sell food for people in our site. The sporting area is far from the

campus and there is a big car park in between. We decided to choose this site

as it has great potential to turn into a successful cafeteria in the sporting area

Sunlight-Since there is no rooftop to cover so that the sunlight is throughout

the day.

Wind direction- The wind blows from the south west and it is strong.

Human circulation- People can walk following the red arrow form a big U

shape as the end of the pathway is locked so that people cannot walk inside.

Car circulation- The car can drive like that and that part is car park lots so

it is quite convenient for people to drive in and there is parking available.

It is facing Taylor’s University campus building and also a big

area of car park.

We can see the little part of car park in this sight. There is

staircase on a slope with grass connected the tar road lead to

the way to exit Taylor’s University with the car park and

basketball court.

Looking South

There is a slope and tar road connected the road as described

as above. We can see the Futsal, basketball and tennis court

as well in our view. The new high rise condominium can be

seen as well.

Looking West

The tennis court will be seen at first and then the little part of

lake scenery can be seen and also there are residential

condominium at far far away can be seen.

Concept

The main reason we decided to propose a dining area is because after we had noticed that there is a lack of resting place for the students who are waiting for their next game or after their games, we would like to build a dining area for them to rest, enjoy a light meal and have some leisure activities while they are waiting for their turn.

Moreover, locker are also provided in the cafeteria itself so that students’ belongings can be keep in a safe place and the problems of losing their belongings could be lessen by leaps and bounds.

In the cafeteria itself, there will be two shower rooms for both male and female toilet respectively so that students could clean themselves after their game instead of going home with their sweaty bodies.

Understanding of Cafeteria

To understand more about how to build a Food and beverage (dining area), we had done some research to improve the knowledge and idea we already had.

A cafeteria is a type of food service location in which there is little or no waiting staff table service, whether a restaurant or within an institution such as a large office building or school.

Instead of table service, there are food-serving counters/stalls, either in a line or allowing arbitrary walking paths. Customers take the food they require as they walk along, placing it on a tray. In addition, there are often stations where customers order food and wait while it is prepared, particularly for items such as hamburgers or tacos which must be served hot and can be quickly prepared.

Theme of Cafeteria

Before we start off with the planning, we look through some different types of theme of cafeteria to have a better view and inspiration of our proposal.

1. Sport

Provides sport news and live actions such as football matches and Olympic matches for the students who visited the café as the cafeteria will be built just beside the sport complex. It also sells healthy food and beverages for the student. Besides, it also creates a comfortable atmosphere for students to discuss about their favourite sports team there.

2. Galaxy

Although Galaxy Themed Café looks stylish but it is not suitable to be build in the school campus. It also doesn’t match the surrounding and the cost for decoration will be higher.

3. Normal

Normal looks boring and it didn’t attract much attention from the students to visit the cafeteria after their games. They will also be bored while enjoying their food there.

After consider among our team, we decided to choose the Sport theme for our cafeteria as it benefits the most among these three choices.

Benefits of the cafeteria

It is beside the sports complex and the parking lots

It often visited by sport lovers

Provide place for students to rest and relax

Good place to have a meal after sport

Provide space for some mini game

Provide activities like keeping up with sport news and live actions.

Provide facilities such as lockers and washroom for people

It created a business opportunity for people to sell food over there.

Locker

Disadvantages of the cafeteria

It is quite far from the campus buildings

Some activities like watching football matches might disturb the students who are having sport such as making too much noise.

It may create some pollution such as people simply throw rubbish.

It may face some safety problem such as robbing because it is far from the security room.

Main IdeaThe counter will look like this. There will be

a see through refrigerator beside the counter. Food is self serviced.

The bathroom provided for those people who finished their sports. There is a door purposely made for

those people to go into the bathroom easily from the sporting area.

The lockers are placed outside the washrooms. People need to pay rental for the lockers if they need to use them.

The indoor dining area might be like this as the wall will be glass wall so that people inside can watch the sports matches through the glass wall while having their meal.

The entertainment area will include pool tables, dart, wii player and etc. People can play mini games after their meal.

We purposely choose round table because it can make people gather and sit in a round shape to make more interactions.

Since the sunlight is through out for whole day and there is nothing to cover so we will build a roof for outdoor dining area to block the sunlight for the customers.

Conclusion

The cafeteria is such a comfortable place for people to relaxing and having meal. People can spend their time in here but not always at the ZYNOPZ commercial block. We made more choices for people. People can play sport games over there instead of going to gym which need to pay since the sporting area is free of charge. When people come the sporting area, we made more income for the cafeteria. This is why we purposed this cafeteria for Taylorians.
