BEIJING — The actor son of Hong Kong action superstar Jackie Chan has been detained in Beijing on drug-related charges, the latest high-profile celebrity to be ensnared in one of China’s biggest anti-drug crackdowns in two decades.

Jaycee Chan, 31, was detained last Thursday together with the 23-year-old Taiwanese movie star Kai Ko, Beijing police said late Monday on their official microblog, identifying them only by their surnames, ages and nationalities. It was unclear why the detentions were announced several days later.

Police said both actors tested positive for marijuana and admitted using the drug, and that 100 grams of it were taken from Chan’s home.

Jaycee Chan’s management, M’Stones International, apologized to the public on his behalf for the “social impact” caused in a statement on their website. It said they would “supervise his rehabilitation and help him return to the right path.”

The detentions follow a declaration in June by President Xi Jinping that illegal drugs should be wiped out and that of-fenders would be severely punished. In Beijing alone, more than 7,800 people have been caught in the crackdown, police said.

A string of celebrities have been among those detained, including Gao Hu, who acted in Zhang Yimou’s 2011 movie “The Flowers of War.” Last week, 42 Beijing performing arts associations and theater companies signed a pledge to not hire any actors connected with drugs in an event organized by the capital’s Narcotics Control Office and the Beijing Cultural Bureau.

Pi Yijun, an anti-drug adviser for the Beijing government, said authorities were targeting celebrities because “these people have a large number of fans, so their behavior tends to have a huge influ-ence on young people.”

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV aired footage of a police search of the younger Chan’s home in Beijing in which he is depicted, his face pixelated, showing officers where he stashed bags of mari-

juana. Police said they acted on a tipoff from the public.

Chan is accused of accommodating drug users, an offense that carries a maximum sentence of three years’ im-prisonment — a far more serious charge than that of drug consumption. Two other people detained in the same case were accused of selling drugs while Ko is ac-cused of drug consumption.

China named the elder Chan an anti-drug ambassador in 2009. Ko, the Taiwanese star, was part of an anti-drug campaign two years ago, CCTV re-ported, showing footage of the campaign in which he joins other celebrities in a chorus declaring: “I don’t use drugs.”

On Tuesday, Ko was shown on CCTV, his face pixelated, tearfully apologizing to his fans and family.

“I feel very regretful, very sorry to all the people who support me... I’ve been a very bad example, I’ve made a very big mistake,” Ko said. In a statement online, his management company, Star

Ritz Productions, said Ko had received a 14-day detention and also apologized to the public.

Ko, whose real name is Ko Chen-tung, became a sensation after his 2011 film “You Are the Apple of My Eye,” a box-office hit in Taiwan. He won Best New Performer award for his role in the coming-of-age movie at the Golden Horse awards in Taiwan, considered the most prestigious in Chinese-language cinema.

He played the boyfriend of one of the protagonists in China-produced “Tiny Times 3.0,” which appealed to young female audiences and knocked “Transformers 4” off the No. 1 spot as the most watched film after its release in the mainland last month.

Illegal drug use has ballooned in China in recent decades, after being virtually eradicated following the 1949 communist revolution. Narcotics began to reappear with the loosening of social controls in the late 1980s.

He may not have a hard time making a decision. He told The As-sociated Press on Monday that he has always been a fan of anti-heroes and said one of his favorite DC Comics characters is Black Adam.

Appearing in Mexico City to promote “Hercules,” Johnson said he will make sure comic fans are

not disappointed.“I am putting my heart and soul

and my bones into this role,” he said.

Johnson didn’t say whether his character will appear in the film “Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice,” which is scheduled to be released in 2016.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DENPASAR - As planned, the Denpasar Police conducted the case process of the murder case of a U.S. traveler, Sheila Ann Von Weise, Monday (Aug 18). Evi-dence was already ascertained to have been complete, so the case process could be carried out.

The case process led by the Chief of Denpasar Police, Djoko Hariutomo, was held in the Ca-tur Prasetya Room. Other than a team of the Denpasar Police, it also involved the South Kuta Police, Disaster Victim Identi-fication (DVI), Indonesia Au-tomatic Finger Print Identifica-tion System (INAFIS), Sanglah Hospital Forensic Medicine,

medical team of Trijata Hospital and Directorate of General Crime Investigation of Bali Police.

Chief of Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Nengah Sadiarta, said the meet-ing only discussed about techni-cal aspects of the investigation. “It only discussed about techni-cal matters (Monday—Ed),” he said.

In addition, his party wanted to make sure if the evidence to prosecute the suspect Tommy and Heather had been complete. Dozens of evidences had been secured related to the murder case of Sheila at the St. Regis Hotel, last Tuesday (Aug 12). “Evidence has been complete. Now, the investigation process is

ready to make,” said Sadiarta.Though the suspect did not

want to speak, the Chief of Criminal Investigation admitted it did not matter because confes-sions were not too important. “Most importantly, the evidence has been complete,” he said.

Meanwhile, a source in police department revealed on Sunday night (Aug 17) that the FBI and police team returned to crime scene at Jalan Sawangan, Nusa Dua, South Kuta. It was intended to check the scene. Subsequently, last Monday was the turn of Chief of Denpasar Police and Bali Police to check the scene. “Maybe it was just meant to double check the location of mur-der,” said Sadiarta. (kmb36)

It was revealed by the Head of Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Ad-nyana, when contacted recently. He said that so far the plan to increase the admis-sion fee had been socialized to some travel agencies and tourism businesses in Bali. In harmony with the increase in admission fee, the agency would also make improve-ment at the Kintamani tourist object. “Ob-viously with the increase in admission fee, the arrangement will also be increased and we have started it today,” he said.

In addition to increasing the arrange-ment of tourist object, his party also claimed to still monitor the existing fee collection booth. So far, the monitoring was done regularly with a number of agencies coalesced into the monitoring team. Adnyana claimed the monitoring conducted all this time had never found any fraud committed by collecting of-ficers. “So far, we have not found such a thing. Nevertheless, we will still do regular monitoring,” he explained.

Previously, Regent of Bangli, Made Gianyar, also planned to raise the admis-

sion fee to Kintamani tourist object by 200 percent. Aside from planning to raise the admission fee, the regent also targeted the tourist arrival to Kintamani to reach 1 million people a year. With such amount of tourist arrival, then Bangli would be able to reach the regionally generated revenue (PAD) as much as IDR 30 billion each year.

He described that later on half of the government revenue would be used to re-pair and remodel the activity at the geosite area. By that way, the natural beauty would be well maintained and could draw travel-ers to come to Kintamani. Meanwhile, half of the revenue would be used to support the welfare of employees in the form of allowance (TPP). So, it was expected that all employees in Bangli could work hard. Especially for the Culture and Tourism Agency, the regent requested the agency to further develop the presence of exist-ing geosite. Lava rocks of Mount Batur could be arranged in such a way as tourist attraction for special interest and location pre-wedding shooting. (ina)

TORONTO — Going my way? A talking robot that’s been hitch-hiking rides from strangers to travel from Canada’s east to west coast is nearing the end of its journey.

HitchBOT, a robot created by a team of Ontario-based commu-nications researchers studying the relationship between people and technology, has used his garden-gloved thumb to traverse the Great White North. He’s traveled from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Kelowna,

British Columbia.The robot’s co-creator David

Smith, who teaches in the depart-ment of communication studies at Ontario’s McMaster University, said Thursday that the creators wanted to situate robotics and ar-tificial technologies into unlikely scenarios and push the limits of what robotics is capable of.

Smith said hitchBOT has a built-in GPS system and is programmed with mobile technology similar to a smartphone, with speech rec-ognition software that works in conjunction with language model-ling. The robot links questions with answers by looking for certain key words and is programmed to scour Wikipedia to spit out regionally relevant facts.

The team also programmed hitchBOT to track its adventures online and take pictures to post on Twitter and Instagram.

It didn’t take long for Hitch-BOT to become a social media sensation and, truth be told, many of the people who have offered him a ride already knew about him before encountering the bizarre contraption. Smith said its Ins-

tagram following was approach-ing 11,000 people, its Facebook account had garnered more than 41,000 “likes” and it has nearly 32,000 Twitter followers.

“Social and traditional media have really ensured that HitchBOT is well-known,” Smith said. “Some (drivers) have tried to search its location. And in most cases, hitch-BOT has had multiple offers.”

Along the way, hitchBOT was invited to a pow-wow with the Wikwemikong First Nation group, where the robot was dubbed Bi-iaabkookwe, according to its Twit-ter feed. It later hitched a ride with Belgian tourists.

Currently, Smith said HitchBOT is hanging out with the British Columbia rock band The Wild, which is taking it to its next per-formance. When it reaches Victoria this weekend, Steve Sxwithul’txw, an aboriginal broadcast producer, plans to pick it up. He said he has arranged a canoe welcome, high tea at the Empress Hotel and ferry ride to Seattle.

Smith said his team monitors hitchBOT via GPS and social media but drivers have been in

control of where they take it and leave it. Smith said the team had replacement robots to continue the journey in case anything happened to hitchBOT, but so far, the robot has not been mistreated.

The child-sized robot is able to able to stand, making it visible to drivers via a retractable tripod. It has a car seat attached to its torso so drivers can strap it into their cars using seatbelts.

The robo t , which comes equipped with solar panels on its torso, communicates to people that it can be recharged by plugging it into car cigarette lighters or regular outlets.

Matthew Berry, of Alberta, said some friends picked up the robot while heading to a wedding in Golden, B.C. They picked it up on the border between Alberta and Calgary, where its previous driver was looking to offload it.

“It was good fun; we took it out onto the dance floor to, well, do the real robot,” Berry said. “It was funny because it was a very meticulously planned wedding so I wasn’t sure how the bride would react, but she loved it!”

The number of stone statues exported to various countries also increased 186.41 percent from

US$2.61 million in the first five months of 2013 to US$7.49 mil-lion in the same period this year,

according to data furnished by the Bali industry and trade office on Monday.

The stone statue exports con-tributed 1.97 percent of Bali’s total export earnings, which reached US$215.04 million, a slight decline of 0.87 percent from US$216.92 million recorded during the same period last year.

Panasunan Siregar, the head of the Bali Central Bureau of Statistics

(PBS), stated that the United States received 20.38 percent of Bali’s exported stone statues, followed by Australia 10.39 percent, Japan 3.31 percent, Singapore 0.35 percent, France 15.48 percent, Hong Kong 0.04 percent, Spain 4.38 percent, Britain 1.10 percent, and several other countries 37.93 percent.

DENPASAR - The Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Denpasar Chapter asked the government to set the lowest price of hotel room in order to reduce the tariff war in the sector. Actually the uncontrolled hotel room growth has kindled this unfair competition.

“Government, regulator and the association should set the lowest price of hotel rooms because in Bali there are one- to five-star hotel. In normal conditions, the room rate is normal, but during low season there is no price limit, so it freely falls,” said Chairman of the PHRI Denpasar, IB Sidartha Putra, in Denpasar.

According to him, during low season many large hotels or five-star hotels that were owned by non-local businessmen di-

minished their room rates. This measure was intended to cover operating costs.

“Target of large hotels was only to cover their operating costs. When five-star hotels sell room at IDR 500,000 and one-star hotels sell at IDR 300,000-IDR 450,000, travelers will surely turn to five-star hotels as offering more amenities at low price. Well, one-star hotels owned by local people will be consequently unable to compete,” he said.

To that end, he said the govern-ment, regulators or association should set up by determining the lowest limit. “So, it will be fair to consumers because it has been in accordance with the money spent and it’s also fair to employers as it enables local businesses with lim-ited capital to compete,” he said.

However, IB Sidartha claimed that he could only appeal to em-

ployers not to discount the room rate during low season. “We’ve appealed, but since it is in free market it will be difficult for us to prohibit at what price they will sell the room,” he said.

Chairman of the PHRI Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Su-kawati, also had calculations previ-ously by using minimal standard. For example, a three-star hotel should not be sold like jasmine (budget) hotel.

According to him, hoteliers were allowed to raise hotel room rates as high as possible, but it was forbid-den to sell hotel rooms below the specified minimal standards. This measure was intended to avoid un-fair competition among hoteliers.

“They (hoteliers—Ed) can raise their room rate as high as possible, but decreasing to below the minimal standard is not allowed. We make minimal standards because we want

to avoid competitions. It is hard for us to compete against people

running the business casually,” he said. (kmb27)

With the company SMS Audio backed by Curtis “50 Cent” Jack-son, Intel will produce the so-called fitness monitoring biometric in-ear headphones.

The headphones will integrate biometric sensors to allow users to collect fitness data and “achieve peak physical performance,” according to an Intel statement Thursday.

It noted that “an energy-harvest-ing audio jack” eliminates the need for extra batteries or chargers.

The installation of Sanglah Hospital Forensic Medicine records the case of baby discov-ery handled this year increases. According to the data in 2013, it handled four cases of baby discovery, while from January to August 2014 it handled five similar cases.

“This case has increased from the previous year. In 2013, we handled four baby discovery cas-es, while up to August this year the discovery of baby amounts to five cases. So, it can be concluded if the baby discovery handled this year increases,” explained the Head of Sanglah Hospital Forensic Medicine, Ida Bagus Putu Alit.

Alit explained the four babies handled in 2013 consisted of two baby boys and two baby girls. Meanwhile, in 2014 his party handled three baby girls and a baby boy, while another baby was not known its sex for sure because it was the case of abor-

tion. However, his party could ascertain if the case belonged to spontaneous (natural) abor-tion. Among the four of the five baby discoveries, two of them had been able to live outside the uterus, while two others had not.

He said that within the period of two years the case could be classified into infanticide or murder with special motif. In other words, the murderer was their own mother and the babies became the victims. Meanwhile, the murder was committed im-mediately after delivery. “The mothers did not want to be known after childbirth,” he said.

In addition, he said that among all the cases only one case that could be known the culprit where it murdered and burned the body. In terms of Law No.23/2002, the case was also included in the child abuse where the violence was committed while the baby was in the womb. (may)

At Gilimanuk, dozens of steamed chicken stalls formerly occupied the culinary center in the middle of the former terminal. The idea of combin-ing a number of stalls to sell at the lo-cation in fact did not work. Actually, it could only run for a couple of months. Since only a few visitors dropping in and lacking of employees, the traders finally decided to leave the former passenger longue of the terminal.

A number of residents met revealed if the location was inaugurated in the mid of 2010. Formerly, the traders of steamed chicken were unified at the same location. Right now, all the trad-ers have stopped trading there because it is quiet and hot. “Visitors prefer to shop at the trader’s own stall and no one wants to buy here,” said Nyoman Tasmen. Although the building was still quite good, the location at Jineng Agung hamlet is then empty and taken advantage for parking space.

In the 1980s through 1990s, the former Gilimanuk Terminal was very famous. Unluckily, the terminal was then dormant. Similar fate was also

experienced by providers of horse buggy service to local harbor.

Headman of Gilimanuk, Gede Ngurah Widiada, said on Monday (Aug 18) the culinary center had indeed been running. Due to trader lacked of employees and heat at noon, they did not occupy it any longer. So, what happened next? According to him, the land including the building should be taken advantage with a more mature planning.

Meanwhile, the Head of Jembrana Development Planning Board, I Ketut Swijana, said the former Gilimanuk Terminal was included in the Environ-mental Building Layout Plan (RTBL), belonging to Sub Regional Develop-ment Region 2 comprising the Gili-manuk Market and Green Open Space of Gilimanuk Square. “Gilimanuk is divided into five Sub Regional Devel-opments and we are going to present the development plan before the par-liament with relevant agencies. It will be obtained information about the next utilization of the former Gilimanuk Terminal,” said Swijana. (kmb26)

BANGLI - Water color change in Lake Batur alleged to happen due to sulfur eruption in the bottom of the lake had an impact on the local fish life. Thousands of fish, both wild fish and the fish cultivated by local farmers in floating net cages floundered and were in agony. The fish farmers could only succumb to natural incident as ever occurred in 2011.

Based on observation on Mon-day (Aug 18), many fish living in Lake Batur were in floundering condition. Allegedly it happened due to the influence of sulfur cur-rently contained in the water of Lake Batur. Such phenomenon also made people living in the surround-ing droves go to the lake. They col-lected fish by using nets and other simple tools.

According to one of the local fish farmers at Songan village, Kintamani, Wayan Wirawan, due to natural conditions, thousands of his fish cultivated in floating net cage were afflicted by the impact

as well. He admitted to be unable to do much to rescue the fish. The incident once happened three years ago began to be known to fish farm-ers on Monday morning (Aug 18). As a result of the sulfur content, the fish usually swimming swiftly turned to look drunk. When com-pared to similar phenomenon three years ago, the current condition was more severe.

Nevertheless, he admitted to be unable to ascertain his losses due to sulfur eruption in the lake bottom. It happened because he had not checked the fish in the cage. Ac-cording to him, when the water was in the current condition the fish in the cages could not be visited. If he visited, they would die quickly.

“When we see the fish, they will go down to the bottom of the lake. And it will make fish die faster,” he said. To that end, his party currently could only monitor the condition of lake water. If within three days such condition did not change, he made sure that thousands of his fish would die. As a fish farmer, he could only succumb to natural incident afflict-

ing him with a number of fish cage farmers.

Meanwhile, the Head of Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, Alit Parwata, when asked for his confirmation said the flounder-ing of thousands of fish in Lake Batur occurred as a result of the sulfur content in the lake water. On Thursday afternoon, a small eruption occurred at some points and emitted sulfur in the bottom of the lake. Eruption points were lo-cated in the area of Seked, Kedisan, Buahan, Abang Songan and Toya Bungkah. “As a result of the sulfur content, many fish were gasping for air. So far, there has been no report on fish death. Hopefully, the incident will not happen like that,” he said.

To ensure the sulfur content in the lake, his party was then doing a test on the water quality of Lake Batur. In addition, his party coor-dinated the natural incident with geologists. According to him, like the incident in 2011, the phenom-enon usually lasted for four days to a week ahead. (ina)

JEMBRANA - Culinary center built by Jembrana government at former Gilimanuk Terminal has not been used for years. None of the traders oc-cupy the refurbished shanties. They prefer to sell at their own stall because visitors rarely come to the terminal.

Capt. Ron Johnson of the Missouri Highway Patrol, who is in charge of security in Ferguson, said bottles and Molotov cocktails were thrown from the crowd and that some officers had come under heavy gunfire. At least two people were shot and 31 were arrested, he said. He did not have condition up-dates on those who were shot. Johnson said four officers were injured by rocks or bottles.

Demonstrators no longer faced the neighborhood’s midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew, but police told protesters that they could not assemble in a single spot and had to keep moving. After the streets had been mostly cleared, authorities ordered reporters to leave as well, citing the risk from gunfire that had been reported.

A photographer for the Getty photo agency was arrested while covering the demonstrations and later released. Two German reporters were arrested and detained for three hours. Conservative German daily Die Welt said correspon-dent Ansgar Graw and reporter Frank Herrmann, who writes for German regional papers, were arrested after al-legedly failing to follow police instruc-tions to vacate an empty street. They said they followed police orders.

Johnson said members of the media had to be asked repeatedly to return to the sidewalks and that it was a matter of safety. He said in some cases it was not immediately clear who was a reporter but that once it was established, police acted properly. Citing “a dangerous

dynamic in the night,” Johnson also urged protesters with peaceful intent to demonstrate during the daytime hours.

The latest clashes came after a day in which a pathologist hired by Michael Brown’s family said the unarmed 18-year-old suffered a bullet wound to his right arm that may indicate his hands were up or his back was turned. But the pathologist said the team that examined Brown cannot be sure yet exactly how the wounds were inflicted until they have more information. Witnesses have said Brown’s hands were above his head when he was repeatedly shot by an officer Aug. 9.

The independent autopsy determined that Brown was shot at least six times, including twice in the head, the family’s lawyers and hired pathologists said. The St. Louis County medical examiner’s autopsy found that Brown was shot six to eight times in the head and chest, of-fice administrator Suzanne McCune said Monday. But she declined to comment further, saying the full findings were not expected for about two weeks.

A grand jury could begin hearing evidence Wednesday to determine whether the officer, Darren Wilson, should be charged in Brown’s death, said Ed Magee, spokesman for St. Louis County’s prosecuting attorney.

A third and final autopsy was per-formed Monday for the Justice Depart-ment by one of the military’s most ex-perienced medical examiners, Attorney General Eric Holder said.

HAVANA — Yet another revolutionary tra-dition has been broken in Cuba: A lawmaker voted “no” in parliament. And it wasn’t just any lawmaker.

Mariela Castro, the daughter of President Raul Castro and niece of Fidel Castro, gave the thumbs-down to a workers’ rights bill that she felt didn’t go far enough to prevent dis-crimination against people with HIV or with unconventional gender identities.

None of the experts contacted by The As-sociated Press could recall another “no” vote in the 612-seat National Assembly, which meets briefly twice a year and approves laws by unanimous show of hands.

“This is the first time, without a doubt,” said Carlos Alzugaray, a historian and former Cuban diplomat.

He said even measures that were widely criticized in grass-roots public meet-ings, such as a law rais-ing the retirement age, had passed unanimously in the Assembly.

Few in Cuba were even aware of the vote until after the measure was enacted into law this summer, at which point gay activists publicized the vote by Castro, who is the island’s most prominent advocate for gay rights.

Arturo Lopez-Levy, a Cuban analyst who lectures at the University of Denver, suggested it might “open doors for other important initiatives.” Mariela Castro

herself seemed to hint there could be more debate in the assembly.

“There have been advances in the way things are discussed, above all the way things are discussed at the grass-roots level, in work-places, unions and party groupings,” she said in an interview posted in late July on the blog of Francisco Rodriguez, a pro-government gay rights activist. “I think we still need to perfect the democratic participation of the representa-tives within the Assembly.” Others are skeptical it will set a precedent.

“I would say that this is more a sign of what Mariela can get away with than a sign of what your everyday parliamentarian can get away with,” said Ted Henken, a professor of Latin American studies at Baruch College in New York.

FERGUSON, Mo. — The National Guard arrived in Ferguson but kept its distance from the streets where protesters clashed again with police, as clouds of tear gas and smoke hung over the St. Louis suburb where an 18-year-old was fatally shot by a police officer. Protesters filled the streets after nightfall Monday, and officers trying to enforce tighter restrictions at times used bullhorns to order them to disperse. Police deployed noisemakers and armored vehicles to push demonstrators back. Officers fired tear gas and flash grenades.

BRUSSELS - Economic crisis in Russia and sluggish demand from Turkey weighed on hopes for an export-led recovery in the eurozone in June, official data showed on Monday.

Exports from the 18-nation single currency zone dipped by 0.5 percent in June compared with May to 162.2 billion euros ($217 billion), the Eurostat statistics agency said.

“June’s eurozone trade data provided yet further evi-dence that the external sector remains too weak to make up for the region’s feeble domestic recovery,” said Jessica Hinds of Capital Economics.

Eurozone exports were dragged down by a 14 percent slump in demand from sanction-hit Russia and an 8 per-cent drop from Turkey, which is suffering an economic slowdown.

With imports up a slight 0.5 percent, this meant coun-tries in the eurozone posted a marginally higher 16.8-billion-euro trade surplus in June, up from 15.4 billion euros the month before.

“Weaker external demand played an important part in the slowdown of the eurozone export-led recovery in the second quarter,” said Christian Schulz, economist at Berenberg Bank.

Policy-makers in Brussels had hoped the eurozone economy was recovering on the back of exports from periphery countries that have pushed through reforms recommended by the EU.

But there are fears the crisis in Ukraine will weigh on growth this year and some EU leaders have warned that sanctions against Russia, which came into effect this month, could further derail the bloc’s fragile recovery from the eurozone debt crisis.

“Not just the crisis of Russia’s economy, but also the temporary slowdown in the US and some emerging mar-kets contributed to the spring lull,” said Schulz.

Growth figures last week showed the eurozone econo-my ground to a halt in the second quarter, casting a cloud over the crisis-hit region.

In June, powerhouse Germany was the only major eu-rozone economy to post a significant increase in exports for the year to date, which rose three percent from the same period in 2013.

Exports in Spain and Portugal, which slumped into deep recessions during the eurozone debt crisis, dropped one percent. Greek exports were down 8 percent.

Meanwhile, demand for eurozone exports was up a strong 8 percent in Britain, where an economic recovery is underway. Demand from China was also up 8 percent.

“The UK was one of the few very strong bright spots for trade in the first half of the year,” Berenberg’s Schulz said.

In June, Britain posted the widest trade deficit in the 28-nation EU, at 48.1 billion euros, followed by France, Spain and Greece.

Overall, the EU posted a trade surplus of a 2.9 billion euros in June, pushed wider than the previous month by a drop in imported energy.

Looking ahead in the eurozone, Hinds of Capital Eco-nomics forecast improvement “as exporters start to feel some benefit from the recent depreciation of the euro”.

A strong euro especially against the dollar has been criticised by both governments and companies as a major constraint to expanding exports.

The Labor Department said Monday that unemployment rates fell in eight states in July and were unchanged in 12. At the same time, hiring rose in 36 states, fell in 13, and was unchanged in Iowa.

The national unemployment rate ticked up to 6.2 percent in July from 6.1 percent in June, the government said earlier this month, even as employers added 209,000 jobs.

The reason the rate rose nationwide even as hiring increased is that more Americans launched job searches but didn’t find work. That lifted the number of unemployed. Still, the rise in people seeking jobs suggests they’re more op-timistic about their prospects.

The jobless aren’t counted as unem-ployed unless they’re actively seeking work.

Mississippi had the highest unem-ployment rate in July, at 8 percent, its first month with the highest since the 2008-2009 Great Recession. In June, Mississippi and Rhode Island had tied with rates of 7.9 percent. Rhode Island had the highest rate for several months earlier this year. After reces-sion ended in June 2009, Michigan and then Nevada typically had the highest rates.

In July, Georgia had the second-highest rate, at 7.8 percent. Michigan, Rhode Island and Nevada were tied with the third-highest, at 7.7 percent.

North Dakota had the lowest rate in the nation, as it has for many years, at 2.8 percent. The state is benefiting from an oil and gas drilling boom. Utah and Nebraska were tied with the next lowest rates, at 3.6 percent.

The biggest job gains were in Texas, which added 46,600 jobs, followed by California, with 27,700 and Michigan, with 17,900.

Despite this month’s increases, state unemployment rates have significantly improved nationwide in the past year. That trend has reduced regional differ-ences.

The Midwest had the lowest rate of the nation’s four largest regions in July, at 5.9 percent. The West had the highest, at 6.6 percent. The rate was 6.1 percent in the South and the Northeast.

That gap of 0.7 percentage points from the lowest to highest is narrower than a year earlier. In July 2013, the South had the lowest rate, at 7.1 percent, and the West the highest, at 8.1 percent.

Bangli has a unique temple showing a strong Chinese influ-ence known as Dalem Balingkang Temple. Structure of the temple is unique because it was formerly said to serve as a palace to avoid the attack from other kings. Formerly, the Dalem Balingkang Temple belonged to the temple complex of Tanggun Titi—standing for the end of bridge and had a spring. In this temple complex lie some shrines dedicated to Ratu Ngurah Sakti Tanggun Titi, Ratu Mas Melant-ing, Ratu Sakti Gede Penyarikan and Sang Hyang Haji Saraswati. The second complex after passing a square occurs a cangapit building, namely an entrance equipped with a monarchic sitting when the king watched the Jro Gede mepada sur-

rounding the temple. The middle courtyard only has a few buildings, only consisting of a meeting hall, the abode of all deities and a shrine of Ratu Ayu Subandar.

The shrine is used to worship Kang Ci Wi and is highly believed by Chinese descendant community to bring in blessings. In the main complex or innermost courtyard lies the worship place of Petak Grand Palace comprising the elev-en and nine-tiered meru shrines. Similarly, there is also ancestral worship of Dalem Balingkang in the form of brick chamber and seven-tiered meru shrine to remind of the Seven Deities. Besides, there are long pavilion with 24 columns and 20 columns as well as mundar-mundar pavilion with 16 columns.

History of the temple is much re-

vealed in the Sukawana Inscription (Goris, 1954). It said that Sukawana village was hit by storms and the palace of Jaya Pangus was badly damaged, so that Jong Les moved to Balingkang. Balingkang itself is derived from two words Bali + ingkang. Orally and based on writ-ten evidence, it is associated with the wedding of King Jaya Pangus Harkajalancana who ruled during the period of Caka Year 1103-1191 or 1181-1269 AD. King Jaya Pan-gus had two queens, Paduka Bhatari Sri Parameswari Indujaketana and Paduka Sri Mahadewi Cacangkaja Cihna. In the existing folklore, his Chinese wife was named Kang Ci Wi, namely a daughter of trader from China.

Then, the words Bali-Ing-Kang were combined into Balingkang. In the chronicle of Ulun Danu Batur

Temple (Batur Temple) of Kinta-mani is mentioned about Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar or Kongco Cong Po Kong, where Empu Liem became the prominent assistant to teach war strategy and governed with principles of Asta Brata. One of the war strategy relics is im-mortalized in the dance of Baris Dadap, Baris Tumbak, Baris Perisi or Baris Tamiang, Baris Bajra to Baris Cina. Baris or warrior dance represents knighthood. Strong Chinese influence is evidenced at a number of villages in Kintamani having geographical names derived from Mandarin words.

For example, the name of Pingan village is actually derived from the word Ping An meaning safety. Son-gan village comes from the Song An, Siakin village from the Sia In and Paketan village from Paket

An. Early Chinese settlers also got farmland at Payangan and they gave litchi seedlings to the King of Bali. The tradition of gallivanting show (ngelawang) is also similar to the tradition of Chinese Lion Dance coming from one house to another. Many kinds of ornamental styles used to embellish the house and furniture in Bali are also adopted from Chinese arts.

Such diverse influences have been widely recognized as native culture to Bali. Even, Balinese traders believe that Kongco Cong Po Kong or Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar in Kintamani is a protec-tor that gives blessing to their trade. Likewise, the couple of deities called Rambut Sedana symbolized with the effigies made of perforated coins are believed to give a blessing to family. (kmb)

“The road is narrowing because it is flanked by many hotels and restaurants. Thus, our journey while carrying bade tower was very slow,” he said.

“Cremation (burning the symbol of body) is held on the waterfront area because the cemetery is indeed located on the beach,” said the family clan chief, Nengah Suanda.

According to Giur Dipta when worshipping the atman or ancestral soul at the highway intersection, the traffic also became totally standstill. It happened because the provincial road including in the east ring road of Karan-gasem was increasingly narrower. The traffic was getting more crowded as many tourist passed through in relation to the development of tourist attraction.

The mass cremation was held for 37 bodies. Besides, it also involved about 60 people who joined the nge-lungah cremation (cremation of children whose death before their teeth fell out). Two of them were bodies from Donggala, Sulawesi. Originally, they were residents of Tukad Se Amed, but transmigrated to Donggala, Central Sulawesi.

Other than cremation, 11 days after that would be resumed with ngeroras, atma wedana and ngelinggihang dewa hyang. The ngeroras involved 278 symbols of the deceased that would be cremated. They also included 16 symbols of body from Lombok.

Chairman of the Ritual Committee, Suanda, was proud because for the second time after 10 years ago his party could hold back similar cremation en masse. He was proud because he could bring together some 130 members of the same clan temple with over 600 people scattered due to wandering. (013)

The boat, which was carrying 20 foreigners and five Indonesians, went down Saturday after being hit by a storm and running into a reef as it trav-elled from Lombok island to Komodo island, a popular tourist destination.

Eighteen tourists and all the In-donesians onboard have so far been rescued.

The missing Spaniards had been with a first group of foreigners who were saved on Sunday after swimming for miles to a volcanic island, said

Budiawan, search and rescue chief on Lombok.

They had separated from the others in a bid to reach dry land quicker, said the official, who like many Indone-sians goes by one name.

He said rescuers were on Tuesday expanding their search to focus on the eastern side of Sangeang, the island that the others in the group had man-aged to reach.

“This morning we deployed five boats from our search and rescue team,

the weather is good today so we hope we can find them,” said Budiawan.

He added local fishermen working at night had also been asked to look for the missing tourists.

Fishermen rescued a second group on Monday, made up of eight foreign-ers and the Indonesians, who were the boat crew and a tour guide.

They had floated at sea for 40 hours, with some huddled in a small lifeboat and others in life jackets.

Bertrand Homassel, a French survivor among the first group, told AFP how they waited for hours perched on the roof of the boat as it slowly sank.

They were eventually left with no choice but to swim to Sangeang island on the horizon, he said. When they finally reached the small island on Saturday evening after a six-hour swim, they found it deserted.

Dehydrated, exhausted and sun-

burnt, they resorted to drinking their own urine and eating leaves until a passing boat picked them up the fol-lowing day, he said.

The foreigners rescued were from New Zealand, Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, France

and Italy.Komodo island is one of several

islands that make up the Komodo National Park, a protected area. Its eponymous lizards can grow up to three metres (10 feet) long and have a venomous bite.

JAYAPURA - The Immigration authorities have accused two French television journalists of violating their stay permit in the easternmost Indone-sian province of Papua.

The two French journalists who visited Indonesia on tourist visas violated Article 122, letter a of the Immigration Law Number 6 of 2011 on the abuse of stay permit, Head of Immigration Division at the Papua Provincial Office of the Law and Human Rights Ministry Luki Agung Binarto stated on Tuesday.

Therefore, the two French journal-ists, Thomas Charles Danbois and Valentine Bourrat, who worked for Arte TV will be placed in custody at the Papua provincial police, he remarked.

“We are still coordinating with the police to ensure that they will not be put in the same cell as the other detainees, the more so because one of them is a woman,” he stated.

The two French journalists had

been named as suspects in the case since August 13, 2014, he noted.

He emphasized that the French Embassy in Jakarta had prepared a team of lawyers from the Todung Mu-lya Lubis & Associates Law Firm to accompany them. The team of lawyers was present in the Papua provincial capital of Jayapura.

In fact, the team of lawyers had written to the Law and Human Rights Ministry in Jakarta, on August 16, seeking deferred detention of the two French journalists for various reasons, he noted.

However, the ministry had not re-sponded to the request, he stated.

It was earlier reported that the Papua Police had interrogated the two French journalists for their alleged close relationship with a criminal armed group (KKB) in Jayawijaya, Papua.

“They are still being questioned. We have as yet not come to any conclusion (about their case),” Papua regional police command spokesman Senior Commissioner Sulistyo Pudjo

stated when asked for confirmation about the issue.

Charles was arrested for holding a tourist visa but conducting activities of a journalist, such as interviewing sup-porters of the armed group believed to be part of the separatist Free Papua Movement (OPM) organization head-quartered around Jayawijaya.

Jayawijaya police resort chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Adolf Beay had earlier reported that Charles and his girlfriend had been arrested in an area in Wamena, Jayawijaya Dis-trict, on Wednesday night (Aug 6).

In July 2013, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa had affirmed that the security situation in Papua was one of the country’s major concerns due to certain elements in the region seeking global attention by attack-ing international figures, including journalists.

As a result, foreign journalists seek-ing to cover Papua must apply for a permit from the government, so that they can be offered adequate security to ensure their safety, he added.

Survivors from the boat that sank Saturday evening on its way from Lombok island to Komodo island, receive medical treat-ments at a hospital in Sape, Indonesia, Monday, Aug. 18, 2014. Rescuers Tuesday expanded their search for two Spanish men still missing after a tourist boat sank at the weekend, forcing survivors to swim hours to dry land and drink their own urine.

In an apparent attempt to pressure Hamas, Egypt said early Monday it would co-host an international fund-raising conference for Gaza — but only if a deal is reached first.

That appears to play into the hands of the West Bank-based Palestin-ian Authority, which is seeking to regain a Gaza foothold, seven years after Hamas ousted it from power in the densely populated coastal strip. Hamas, whose officials are part of the Palestinian delegation in the Cairo talks, has emerged weaker from the month-long Gaza war.

The militant group finds itself pres-sured by both Egypt and the Palestin-ian Authority to accept a less than per-fect deal with Israel, but needs to show the people of Gaza that the enormous sacrifices they endured in the fighting were not in vain. There were few signs of any major breakthroughs.

A member of the Palestinian del-egation said that Israel was offering to ease the Gaza blockade by opening border crossings to some goods and people, but was insisting that it retain the right to limit the imports of mate-rial like cement, and chemical and metal products, which Israel says can be used for weapons manufacturing.

Hamas fears the arrangement would allow Israel to retain the right to close the crossings whenever it wished and is pushing for more Palestinian input into such decisions. The Pales-tinian official also told The Associated Press that Israel wants to put off for an unspecified date any discussion on the opening of a Gaza seaport and airport and the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

The Palestinians, however, say they will only agree to postpone discussing the seaport and airport for “a month after a ceasefire agreement, with other issues like .... the prisoners,” the official said. He spoke condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss negotiations

with the media. He also said that Israel agrees to extend the maritime territory in which Gaza fisherman can venture out from two to four kilometers (three to six miles) and eventually to 19 kilometers (12 miles) from the shore, but that it was standing firm against Hamas’ demand for unsupervised exports from the strip.

The Gaza blockade, imposed after Hamas seized control of the terri-tory in 2007, has greatly limited the movement of Palestinians in and out of the territory of 1.8 million people, restricted the flow of goods into Gaza and blocked virtually all exports. Israel says the blockade is needed to prevent arms smuggling, but critics say the measures have amounted to collective punishment.

Jamal Shobaky, the Palestinian ambassador in Cairo voiced disap-pointment with the Israeli stance, particularly on the question of the blockade. “What the Israelis have

offered so far in the talks is not remov-ing the blockade but rather easing it,” he said. The latest round of Gaza fighting was precipitated by massive Israeli arrests of Hamas members in the West Bank in the aftermath of the abduction and killing of three Israeli teenagers in June. Their deaths were followed by the slaying of a Palestin-ian youth in Jerusalem in what was a likely revenge attack.

On Monday, Israel’s Shin Bet security service said it had uncov-ered a coup plot due to information gleaned from the West Bank arrests. It described the plot as a Hamas coup attempt aimed at toppling Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Since the war started with an Israeli air campaign on July 8, followed by the introduction of troops on the ground nine days later, many of the strip’s structures have been destroyed and tens of thousands of people remain huddled in U.N. shelters.

GENEVA — The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed more than 1,200 people since it began in Decem-ber 2013, the World Health Organiza-

tion said Tuesday. More than 2,200 have been sickened, according to the U.N. health agency’s latest numbers.

Authorities have struggled to contain the outbreak, which started in Guinea and has spread to Liberia,

Sierra Leone and Nigeria. There are quarantines and travel restrictions for the sick and those in contact with them, sometimes including whole villages and counties, but officials warned that the restrictions

have sometimes hampered food deliveries.

The U.N. World Food Program has said that it is preparing to de-liver food to 1 million people over the next three months.

“I think now there is a high vigi-lance in all countries,” Fadela Chaib, a spokeswoman for WHO, told re-porters in Geneva. “I can’t remember the last time we fed 1 million people in a quarantine situation.”

KUALA LUMPUR — The remains of at least 15 Malaysians killed when a jetliner was shot down over Ukraine will be re-turned to their home country this week, the first Malaysian victims of the disaster to be flown home, the country’s defense minister said Tuesday.

All 298 people on board died when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down on July 17. The plane was heading to Kuala Lum-pur from Amsterdam and was shot out of the sky over an area of eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russia separatists. The victims included 43 Malaysians and 195 Dutch nationals.

With fighting between the rebels and Ukrainian forces ongoing near the crash site, victims’ remains were gathered and sent to the Netherlands for identification.

Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Tuesday that 28 Malaysian vic-tims had been identified so far, including 15 passengers and 13 crew members.

The remains of at least 15 Malaysians and a Dutch national who was married to a Malaysian

will arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, Hishammuddin said at a news conference, adding that the exact number to arrive would be known later in the week.

The government has declared Friday a national day of mourning. Hishammuddin said Malaysia would not be competing with the Nether-lands in terms of how the bodies are received. The Netherlands observed a minute’s silence and solemn cer-emonies were held when the remains of the victims arrived in the country last month. Dutch authorities said last week that they had identified 127 victims in all.

The separatists have been widely blamed for firing a mis-sile that brought the Boeing 777 down, but have publicly denied responsibility. The Netherlands and other countries have launched criminal investigations.

Malaysia Airlines has been hit by two major disasters this year, adding to its longstanding finan-cial woes. In March, Flight 370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing disappeared with 239 people on board after flying far of course. That jet still has not been found despite an exhaustive ongoing search in an area of the southern Indian Ocean where it is believed to have gone down.

CAIRO — Palestinian and Israeli negotiators in Cairo resumed indirect talks on Tuesday, trying to hammer out a roadmap for the war-torn Gaza Strip after Egypt announced a 24-hour extension of the cease-fire to allow more time for negotiations. The extension of the truce fanned hopes of an emerging deal, however vague, though wide gaps remain on key issues, including Israel’s blockade of Gaza, its demands for disarmament of the Islamic militant group Hamas and Palestinian demands for a Gaza seaport and an airport.

BIAK - Several Indonesian war-ships have been deployed in the eastern Indonesian seas to secure the international maritime event Sail Raja Ampat and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s visit to West Papua province on August 24-25, 2014.

“A number of Indonesian naval warships are routinely patrolling the eastern Indonesian waters,” Commander of the Naval Eastern Fleet’s Maritime Security Unit First Admiral Heru Kusmanto stated on Monday.

He refused to divulge further information regarding the number of warships being deployed to safe-guard the event.

Sail Raja Ampat is being orga-nized in Raja Ampat District, West Papua Province, from August 17 to 23, 2014.

President Yudhoyono is sched-uled to attend the main event of Sail Raja Ampat, which will be held in Waisai, on August 23. The highlight of the main event will be a parade of warships.

As part of the Sail Indonesia series, Sail Raja Ampat is the sixth event after Sail Bunaken in 2009, Sail Banda in 2010, Sail Wakatobi-Belitung in 2011, Sail Morotai in 2012, and Sail Komodo in 2013.

Raja Ampat is also often dubbed as “Heaven on Earth”, “Miracle

of Papua”, “Underwater Paradise on Earth”, or “Real Wonder of the World” for its enthralling marine panoramas.

Raja Ampat, which literally means “Four Kings”, is derived from a local myth and has one of the most beautiful marine panoramas in the world. The archipelago com-prises around 1.7 thousand islands and encompasses more than 9.8 million acres of land and sea off the northwestern tip of the West Papua Province. It has four major islands: Waigeo, Salawati, Batanta, and Misool, which are home to ancient rock paintings.

In 2012, Raja Ampat has been included in the Real Wonder of the World list. It has been recognized as one of the world’s 10 most beautiful diving sites and rated number one for its rich diversity of marine flora and fauna.

It has 1,320 fish species; 75 per-cent of the world’s coral species, 10 times the number of corals in Carib-bean; five species of rare turtles; 57 species of mantis shrimps; 13 species of marine mammals; and 27 species of rare fish.

There are also 60 varieties of crayfish, 699 types of soft animals or species of mollusks, comprising 530 species of snails (Gastropoda), 159 species of shells (bivalva), two species of Scaphopoda, five species of squid (Cephalopoda), and three Chiton species.

GIANYAR - If you are a spiri-tualist, try to feel the vibration of the magical temple of Goa Garba or Garba Cave. Aura of the cave is so pronounced. People who aim to meditate and gain knowledge often come to this cave. This Goa Garba ancient relic is located beneath the Pengukur-Ukuran Temple es-timated to have been built around the twelfth century AD during the reign of King Jayapangus.

Goa Garba is located at Sawe-gunung hamlet, Pejeng village, Tampaksiring subdistrict, Gianyar. By car, it is about 50 minutes away or about 34 km from Denpasar. This historic site is now becoming a tourist destination visited by many foreign travelers.

Other than being known as a tourist destination with an abun-dance of temples, Bali also retains a good few of cave. One of them is Goa Garba posing one of the ancient relics having a great signifi-cance. Goa Garba is located beneath the Pengukur-Ukuran Temple. The temple was formerly used as a school for the kings of Bali.

It is situated on a steep cliff, right on the bank of the Pakerisan River. Based on information of local resi-dents, Goa Garba is a hermitage niche carved on the wall of cliff edge of the Pakerisan River. On top of this hermitage lie a number of pools and showers where at pool side sits a hole leading to a cave.

To achieve this cultural heri-tage, visitor must first visit a neat entrance gate with nicely arranged stairs made of river stone. Mean-while, the entrance gate is made of sand stone. It is said that the cave was made by Kebo Iwa, a Balinese vice regent having supernatural power.

There is a stone containing the footprints whose size exceeds the size of an ordinary human foot and it is believed to belong to Kebo Iwa. At the time of making the staircase, the stone is said to move by itself in accordance with the will of Kebo Iwa. Uniquely, every time of step-ping down the stone staircase, its number is always different. When counting them for again and again, the amount will not be the same.

In the niche can be found several sculptures such as a stone board carved with the motif of a pot. In the meantime, in the Pengukur-Ukuran temple can be found several carved stones and a stone door that reads Saka Year 1116 or be equal to 1194 AD. In the inscription is mentioned the name Dharmaanyar and this may be the former name of the temple.

To support the tourism sector, this Goa Garba tourist attraction has been equipped with facilities like a spacious parking lot. Although most of the population around the Goa Garba has livelihood as farmers, they have intelligent mind, so that the ancient relics can be preserved well.

“I have to give her credit, she started out well,” Wozniacki said. “She got some matches under her belt playing qualifiers, and that helped her. I felt pretty good out there. It just took a while to get started.” There were several long rallies in the final two sets before Wozniacki prevailed. It was 2-2 in the third set before Wozniacki won the final four games.

“It took me a few games to get used to new balls and a faster court,” Wozniacki said. “But I felt like I was getting stronger as the match went on. My confidence was high. I was in a great place mentally.” Eugenie Bouchard of Canada needed only 52 minutes to beat Serbia’s Bo-

jana Jovanovski 6-1, 6-1. The third-seeded Bouchard led 5-0 in each set against the unseeded Jovanovski. In a late night match, No. 5 seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia lost 7-6 (2), 6-3 to Andrea Petkovic of Germany.

Seventh-seeded Sara Errani of Italy was eliminated by Garbine Muguruza of Spain 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. It was the third loss in the last four matches for Errani, who has been knocked out in the first round in two of her last three tournaments. Muguruza lost in straight sets to Er-rani at the 2012 U.S. Open in their only other meeting.

Samantha Stosur of Australia earned a 7-6 (8), 6-7 (10), 6-2 vic-

tory over Kurumi Nara of Japan. Stosur, who won the U.S. Open in 2011, blew three match points in the second set tiebreaker and let another match point get away before winning on her fifth chance. Stosur was given a wild card into the Con-necticut Open.

Qualifier Shuai Pen of China beat Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine 6-4, 6-3, and Barbora Strycova Zahlavova of the Czech Republic defeated qualifier Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

Unseeded Carla Suarez-Na-varro of Spain withdrew from the tournament because of a gastroin-testinal illness. She was replaced by lucky loser Caroline Garcia of France, who beat qualifier Irina Carmelia Begu of Romania 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).

Wild card entrant Kirsten Flip-kens of Belgium beat qualifier Misaki Doi of Japan 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Unseeded Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia defeated qualifier Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain 6-4, 6-3.

LOS ANGELES - With his trademark top-of-the-lungs, high-fiving, rambunc-tious enthusiasm, former Microsoft Corp chief executive Steve Ballmer introduced himself to Los Angeles Clippers fans on Monday, promising a new era for the NBA team after former owner Donald Sterling was banned for life over racist remarks.

Ballmer, 58, who paid an NBA-record $2 billion for the Clippers, greeted the sev-eral thousand gathered at the team’s Staples Center home with the primal screams that punctuated meetings at the Seattle technol-ogy company. “I couldn’t be more honored or excited or fired up to be here,” Ballmer exclaimed as he was welcomed with a standing ovation.

Ballmer, who said he will be a courtside fixture at games, took over the Clippers last week, ending Sterling’s 33 years of ownership that were marked by decades of losing and second-tier status to local rival, the Lakers. The NBA banned Sterling for life in April, days after his privately taped remarks imploring a girlfriend not to publicly associate with black people were published.

The remarks, which were publicized during the Clippers’ playoff run, sparked public outrage, prompted sponsors to cut ties with the team and caused Clippers players, who are mostly black, to consider a boycott. The 80-year-old real estate bil-lionaire also unsuccessfully fought in court to keep the team after his estranged wife, Shelly Sterling, struck the deal with Ballmer.

“Everything is about looking forward,” Ballmer told the crowd, striking a tone about new beginnings for a team that finds itself for the first time as a playoff contender behind superstars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.

The playoffs came after the Clippers acquired top players in recent years. Now they are also in a new position of com-manding the off-season spotlight. “We made lemonade out of lemons,” Ballmer said alongside eight of the team’s players who were in attendance, praising their performance last year during the Sterling saga.

Sterling’s comments embarrassed the NBA and Clippers supporters. “I think it’s going to be a great change, a positive change,” said Clippers fan Teri Renty. “It’s something we desperately needed, and it will really be great for the team in giving them the energy and the momentum to look forward to good things.”

The rally served as a restart for fans who were given t-shirts in Clippers red, white and blue that read “We are Clipper Nation” along with “It’s a New Day” on the back.

Head coach Doc Rivers, who considered quitting if Sterling remained as owner, characterized the Ballmer era as one of relief for fans, who had for years been publicly reserved in their support for the longtime Western Conference doormats.

“Now they can actually say it and be proud of it, and I’m very happy for them,” Rivers told reporters after the rally. “If we do it right, the name can stand for something.”

Wozniacki comes back for win at New HavenAssociated Press

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut — Caroline Wozniacki came back to defeat Timea Bacsinszky 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 Monday in the first round at the Connecticut Open. A four-time champion of the New Haven tourna-ment, the fourth-seeded Wozniacki lost the first three games of the match against Bacsinszky, a qualifier. Wozniacki battled back to even the set at 4-4. But Bacsinszky got a break of serve in the next game, and then closed out the set by scoring on a drop shot.

Barcelona’s fans, however, appeared ready to give Suarez yet another chance. Suarez, who transferred to Barcelona from Liv-erpool after the World Cup, was cheered by his new fans during the team’s presentation and went on as a substitute in the 75th minute to another round of applause. The friendly was likely the last match Suarez will play before his ban runs out on Oct. 25.

Neymar hadn’t played since fracturing a vertebra during the World Cup on July 4, ruling him out of the rest of the tournament. He was deemed fit to play hours before the friendly and showed no signs of the injury. Neymar set up Lionel Messi’s third-minute opener before adding goals in the 12th and 44th. He was substituted at halftime be-fore Barcelona youth forwards Mu-

nir El Haddadi scored in the 54th and the 77th and Sandro Ramirez added another in the 89th.

“We have a team with incred-ible potential,” said Barcelona’s new coach Luis Enrique. “It isn’t very difficult when players of the talent of (Messi and Neymar) work together.” Suarez and Neymar were both greeted warmly when intro-duced along with the rest of their teammates. The Uruguay forward even received a smattering of “Su-arez! Suarez!” from some support-ers, whose enthusiasm for the new signing was only exceeded by that shown for Messi.

While Neymar shone in his return, Suarez was limited to just a few touches of the ball in his 15 minutes. He had his first practice with Barcelona on Friday, a day after the Court of Arbitration for

Sport softened his ban. Barcelona sports director Andoni Zubizarreta said Suarez would use his time away from the pitch to learn Bar-celona’s particular pass-happy style of play in training.

“We are going to leave him in peace so he can integrate with the group, with our team, and can get to know how we play, and how, considering his qualities, he can help,” Zubizarreta said. “When he comes back, we want him at 100 percent. That’s the plan.” Both of Barcelona high-profile’s forwards featured in two of the most remark-able moments of this summer’s World Cup.

BURNLEY, England — Diego Costa scored just 17 minutes into his debut and Cesc Fabregas had two assists in a superb performance as Chelsea opened its Premier League campaign with a 3-1 win at newcomer Burnley.

The hosts were given hope of a huge upset when Scott Arfield put Burnley in front in the 14th minute, but it was all Chelsea after that. Costa showed why Chelsea spent 32 million pounds ($53 million) to bring him in from Atletico Madrid when he slotted in the equalizer just three minutes later, and Fabregas set up Andre Schuerrle with a sub-lime pass in the 21st as the German World Cup winner made it 2-1.

Fabregas then sent in a corner in the 34th that Branislav Ivanovic volleyed into the net after some

slack defending.Costa had earlier had a penalty

appeal waved away and was booked for diving in the 31st, despite re-plays showing that his right foot was clipped by onrushing Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

Costa and Fabregas were the two major offseason recruits for Jose Mourinho’s team, and they showed right away why their arrivals have elevated Chelsea into being the bookmakers’ favorite for the title.

Fabregas, especially, was in-volved in nearly every Chelsea attack on his return to the Premier League — and may have given Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger second thoughts about his decision not to re-sign his former captain from Barcelona this summer.

“He really was the maestro, he controlled the tempo of the game,” Mourinho said. “He was the man

that dictated the speed, the intensity and the direction of the game.”

Fabregas’ standout moment came in the buildup to Chelsea’s second goal when he finished off a 25-pass team move with an inch-perfect ball into the area for the onrushing Schuerrle to slot inside the far post. “So far so good,” Fab-regas said. “I think we have a very talented young team.”

While the game was a bright start to the new season for Chel-sea, it also may have signaled the end of an era as Mourinho picked Thibaut Courtois as his starting goalkeeper ahead of Petr Cech, who has been the Blues’ No. 1 for the last decade.

Courtois was brought back after an impressive loan spell at Atletico Madrid and looked assured on his debut, although he had no chance of stopping Arfield’s early strike.

FRANKFURT — Schalke was stunned 2-1 by third-division Dynamo Dresden in the first round of the Ger-man Cup on Monday. Hamburger SV squeezed into the second round when goalkeeper Rene Adler saved two penalties in a shootout win over third-division Energie Cottbus.

Hamburg rallied to tie the game 1-1 in regulation and went ahead in extra time, only to see Cottbus level late for 2-2.

Schalke, which will play in the Champions League this season, be-came the fifth Bundesliga team to be knocked out in the first round, following weekend losses by Mainz, Stuttgart, Augsburg and Paderborn, while Dresden celebrated its return to the cup competition with a huge upset. Dresden was excluded from last season’s tournament because of fan trouble.

“We failed to apply much pressure up front,” Schalke coach Jens Keller

said. “We lost possession too eas-ily, we didn’t keep the ball, we were slow. At least five, six players played poorly.”

Dresden took the lead through a penalty by Justin Eilers in the 24th and Nils Teixeira doubled the lead with a superb volley from the edge of the penalty box in the 49th. Joel Matip cut the deficit in the 78th but Schalke could not score again and Dresden reached the second round for the first time since 1991.

A header by Hamburg’s Heiko Westermann from a free kick by Rafael van der Vaart in the 70th can-celed out a second-minute penalty by Manuel Zeitz, given away by Adler. Van der Vaart then curled in a free kick in the 96th, but Sven Michel sent the match into the shootout by scoring in the 105th. Also Monday, Heidenheim beat second-division rival Union Berlin 2-1, while fourth-tier Kickers Offenbach upset second-division Ingolstadt in a shootout following a goalless 120 minutes.

MADRID — The Spanish league says the second division season will open as planned this weekend after earler plans to delay its start.

League president Javier Tebas says that the second-tier competi-tion will begin on Saturday after the league resolved a dispute involving

a club that had gone to court to fight its relegation for failing to meet financial requirements.

Real Murcia had won a ruling by a judge that ordered its inclusion in the second division.

But Tebas says that it is “impos-sible” to carry out the judge’s order, meaning relegated Murcia would play in the third division.

FLORENCE, Italy — Fioren-tina forward Giuseppe Rossi is having more problems with his right knee, which has been oper-ated on three times. Rossi has been out of action since injuring his thigh during last Thursday’s training session.

Tests Monday ruled out a mus-cle injury but revealed “indications of overload on the right knee.”

Fiorentina adds that Rossi “will undergo a period of rest and ap-propriate treatment for at least seven days, at the end of which he will undergo further tests.”

Rossi was left out of Italy’s World Cup squad after returning

from a four-month injury layoff shortly before the tournament in Brazil.

The New Jersey-born forward was Serie A’s leading scorer with 14 goals in 17 matches for Fioren-tina when he reinjured his right knee in January. Rossi underwent two previous operations on the same knee.

JAKARTA - Indonesian champions Persipura Jayapura are making up for lost time and putting the country back on the Asian football map after being one of the many victims in the lengthy boardroom battle for control of domestic football. Warring factions left Indonesia with two national teams and two domestic leagues at one point in 2012, with world governing body FIFA routinely threatening the Southeast Asian nation with suspension unless they sorted out the problems.

The team from the island of New Guinea, the most easterly side in the top flight, ended up on the wrong side of the infighting with their Indonesian Super League blocked at one point from competing in continental competition. A truce was eventually reached with the leagues, national teams and separate football associations agreeing to unite and Indonesia allowed to get back to concentrating on mat-ters on the field.

For Persipura, a side who have won three domestic championships in five seasons and finished runners-up in the other two campaigns, that meant improving standards to compete against the best in Asia. “The two-year hiatus did disrupt their progress a little,” Persipura head coach Jacksen Tiago told FIFA in an interview published on Tuesday. “They went back to the slightly primitive football we used to have. “The credibility of Indonesian football internationally had been damaged because people saw Indonesia as a real mess. “Now we are starting to get it back because we are playing in a ratified league competition once more.”

The Brazilian, who briefly coached Indonesia last year, will lead his side in the quarter-finals of the second tier Asian Football Con-federation’s AFC Cup, where they will face defending champions Al Kuwait in the first leg later on Tuesday. The last eight appearance matches their previous best showing in the competition in 2011.

Top scorer and captain Boaz Solossa, who was forced off early in the 9-2 win over Myanmar’s Yangon United in the previous round, believed the club would only improve from the continental tests.

“It means so much that we have the chance to play in the AFC Cup and the AFC Champions League. I think that provides me and my team mates with so much, because if we only play in Indonesia we won’t make much progress,” he explained. “Having performed in the Champions League and the AFC Cup, I feel we have gained valuable experience as AFC football is highly developed and pro-fessional.”

Al Kuwait coach Abdulaziz Hamada was wary of the task ahead of his side, with the second leg in Indonesia next week. “Indonesian football has improved a lot in recent years and they rely on the pace and talent of their players,” he told reporters ahead of the first leg.

Brian Nohe, president of SMS Audio, said the new device means the company is “the first to provide

this level of integrated, seamless and helpful biometric information to inspire customers to advance their fitness experiences.”

Intel said the listening devices will “bring smart exercise capabili-ties to athletes of all levels later this year.”

Michael Bell, corporate vice president at Intel, said the company “is focused on driving innova-tion in the wearable technology segment by partnering with life-style brands like SMS Audio that complement our technology and design expertise.”

(ina)

It was expressed by the Policy Maker Council of the Bali Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD), Bagus Sudibya.

He said, in the law on the cul-ture-based tourism development in Bali, the agriculture was the culture of Balinese community. This potential should continue to be preserved for the welfare of society

on the island.“Bali Tourism is cultural tour-

ism and Balinese culture is agri-culture. Regional Bylaw of Bali on tourism is also cultural tourism. This means that in the Law we have been mandated to preserve our culture (agriculture—Ed), not tourism based on taste or desire,” he said.

According to him, cultural tour-ism positioned people as the subject of development, not the object. On that account, it was time for players to enjoy the added value of all the activities related to tourism. More-over, based on statistics, travelers spent their money around IDR 10 trillion each year.

Of the IDR 10 trillion spent during a year, Bali could just ab-sorb through food products at the amount of IDR 2.7 trillion. So, the opportunity remained open to be worked on with the value at IDR 6.3 trillion.

“Necessarily, this must lead us to sit down together to think about

how many trillions of the potential that we can seize for the welfare of our people. To build the people’s welfare indeed requires money,” he explained.

He said that one of the ways to work on the remaining potential was by taking advantage of the cultural potential, namely the agri-culture. “Well, one of the potentials can be found the solution through agrotourism. We must draw the remaining amount by offering agro products related to tourism, so that some portion of potential of IDR 6.3 trillion can be seized for the people’s welfare,” he said.

By considering the agricultural

potential to seize dollar spent by travelers, the government with relevant stakeholders had to fix the infrastructure towards the ob-jects offering the ecotourism. “Let us repair this agricultural activity, so that it becomes a tourist attrac-tion that can provide added value for farmer later. This potential must be combined. For example, since the agricultural activities are mostly located in rural areas, the roads leading to those areas pos-ing the center of agriculture must be repaired, such as Jatiluwih, Sidemen and Banyuatis’” said the owner of Bagus Agro Pelaga. Tourism must not leave agriculture

Bali Post

DENPASAR - Rapid tourism development in Bali should not leave the agriculture becoming one of the tourist attractions. It happens because the advancement of tourism is inseparable from the agrarian culture denoting the backbone and livelihood of the majority of Balinese people.
