The estimated 100,000 fans at the sold-out show left Grant Park calmly as they were led to evacuation and shelter sites in underground parking garages along Michigan Avenue. Day two of the three-day event, which concludes Sunday, was supposed to culminate with the Red Hot Chili Peppers rocking out on

the main stage. Concert organizers said Saturday’s show would resume if and when it’s deemed safe to do so.

“Due to an approaching storm and warnings from the National Weather Ser-vice (NWS), Lollapalooza organizers have suspended the festival until further notice,” said an announcement on the concert web-

site and sent by text message to those who downloaded the festival smartphone app.

“Lollapalooza officials are continuing to ... monitor weather conditions and de-termine when the park is safe for festival-goers to return,” it said. Video screens at the venue also displayed evacuation announce-ments. Shelby Meade, a spokeswoman for promoter C3 Presents, said the company regretted having to suspend the show.

“Our first priority is always the safety of our fans, staff and artists,” Meade said. Powerful winds from an advancing storm were responsible for last summer’s deadly stage rigging collapse at the Indi-ana State Fair.

NEW YORK — Pounding out the details of his personal life on a Broadway stage doesn’t seem to faze Mike Tyson. The former heavyweight champ says that’s what’s used to do-ing, “and at least now I don’t have to go to hospital every time.”

The 46-year old Tyson is appearing in the one-man show, “Mike Tyson Undisputed Truth.” Directed by Spike Lee, the nearly two-hour show chron-icles Tyson’s life from childhood and his early boxing career to his public

divorce from Robin Givens and his time spent in prison. He even talks about an incident with Brad Pitt.

“I’m just joking and stuff. I’m not mad at anyone. I hope he gives me a damn job,” Tyson said when asked about the incident. The boxer spoke to The Associated Press Thursday, the same day as the show’s opening. Lee chimed in: “He asked for a job.”

Lee, famous for chronicling stories about Brooklyn in such films as “Crook-lyn,” ‘’She’s Gotta Have It,” and the upcoming “Red Hook Summer,” feels this work adds nicely to collection.

“You can’t get more Brooklyn than Mike Tyson. And if you remember the film, “Do the Right Thing,” the great Robin Harris (playing Sweet Dick Wil-lie) had many references to Mike. And the side of Sal’s Famous Pizzeria we painted a mural, Brooklyn’s Finest: Mike Tyson, so this is history,” Lee said.

While Tyson’s life has been tumul-tuous at times, the boxer says he can deal with telling intimate details to a room full of strangers simply because “it’s a job to be done.” “Even though it’s real, it’s not real. It’s an illusion,” Tyson says.

CHICAGO — Police evacuated tens of thousands of concertgoers from the Lollapalooza music festival on Saturday before a powerful thunder-storm swept into downtown Chicago and pelted the outdoor venue with rain. The event was indefinitely suspended at 3:30 p.m. after a severe thunderstorm warning was issued, said police spokesman Darryl Baety.

Gianyar (Bali Post) –A married couple from China who were enjoying the morning atmosphere of

Ubud at Jalan Hanoman last Saturday (4/8) got disturbed by robber Gupron Mas-rudin (21) from Dusun Karanggending, Pribolinggo, East Java who’s a mini market worker at Andong. It was stated, Shamasan Wei (44) was holding a cell phone which suddenly taken by robber who’s on a motorcycle. In that scene victim managed to hold robber’s motorbike which then locals noticed what happened and so judged him by hitting him causing blood all over his face and his head wounded. Police managed to stop the clash then brought robber to police station. Ubud Head Police, PC Gede Redastra, stated that robber and evidence has been secured while victim has been asked for statement. The incident happened at 11.30 am local time and until now police is still developing the case. (kmb16)

Chief of Badung Police, Beny Arjanto, when asked for his con-firmation on Saturday justified the incident of shrine vandalism act. His party had arrested the three culprits and they were still under-going an intensive investigation. So far, all the culprits still had the status as witness. “We have ar-rested the three culprits. Since the incident occurred this afternoon (Saturday—Ed), the three culprits still had the status as witness,” explained the former Head of Sub Directorate of General Criminal Detective of Bali Police.

According to information of Chief Beny, the act of shrine vandalism was only a misunder-standing. Surya Prabhawa sold his land containing a shrine to a

buyer from Surabaya. The land sale transaction was through Made Merta. Well, once the sale occurred, the land was au-tomatically the property of the buyer from Surabaya. Since there was a shrine on the land, it was then demolished. “However, the shrine demolition was carried out without the knowledge of Surya Prabhawa,” he explained.

Before demolishing, Made Merta looked for two workers namely Alberthus and Marthen. Both workers were paid at IDR 200,000. Such shrine demolition was using a hammer. “At 8:00 a.m. local time, Made Merta was look-ing for two workers. Four hours later, they demolished the shrine,” he said. The demolition was also

known by Surya Prabhawa. Being surprised to see his shrine being demolished, he then reported the incident to Mengwi Police. “Ac-cording to Made Merta, he was told to do so by the land owner (the buyer from Surabaya),” he said.

Meanwhile, the land owner claimed to have made coordina-tion with a religious figure. How-ever, Surya Prabhawa admitted to have not been informed. “We’re still investigating this case. For a while, the motive is only a mis-understanding. Due to such in-cident, Surya Prabhawa claimed to suffer a loss worth IDR 300 million,” he added when accom-panied by Unit Chief of Criminal Detective of Mengwi Police, Keris Aji Wibisono. (kmb21)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Consumer Protection Foundation

(YLPK) of Bali received hundreds of re-ports from consumers up to July 2012. At least there were 551 complaints regarding five issues including telecommunication, electricity, water services, leasing and housing.

“Virtually most of the complaints were reported by consumers living in Denpasar City and Badung Regency. They com-plained about goods and services in Bali,” said Director of YLPK, I Putu Armaya, in Denpasar on Friday (Aug 2).

He said the consumer protection aimed at increasing the public awareness of their rights and obligations, raising the dignity of consumers by avoiding nega-tive impacts of goods or services as well as increasing the consumer empower-ment in selecting.

“With the more modern and complex trading system, the issues of consumer protection are also increasingly com-plex,” he said.

As for the business perpetrator, Ar-maya said that consumer protection also

aimed at growing the awareness of busi-nesses perpetrators so that it resulted in a honest and responsible attitude, creating a system of consumer protection containing an element of legal certainty and transpar-ency of information as well as access to get information and improve the guaran-teed quality of goods or services.

“Protection against consumers has already been set forth in Article 3 of Law No. 8/1999 on consumer protection,” he said.

According to him, the unfair compe-tition practices had proved to result in disadvantages to consumers, but the mechanism of consumer law had not received adequate compensation. On that account, to create a climate of fair competition it was necessary to carry out deregulation against various regulations related to anti-competition.

“It is very important considering the government as regulator should protect the interests of consumers, not even make regulations to protect the monopoly practices,” he said. (kmb27)

Once the spaceships are built, NASA plans to hire the private companies to taxi astronauts into space within five years. Until they are ready, NASA is paying Russia about $63 million per astronaut to do the job.

In a statement, NASA Admin-istrator Charles Bolden said the move “will help keep us on track to tend the outsourcing of human spaceflight.”

NASA hopes that by having pri-vate firms ferry astronauts into low Earth orbit, it can focus on larger long-term goals, like sending crews to a nearby asteroid and eventually Mars. The private companies can also make money in tourism and other non-NASA business.

The three companies are the Boe-ing Co. of Houston, Space Explora-tion Technologies, called SpaceX,

of Hawthorne, Calif., and Sierra Nevada Corp. of Louisville, Colo.

They are quite different compa-nies. Boeing is one of the oldest and largest space companies with a long history of building and launching rockets and working for NASA, going back to the Mercury days. SpaceX is a relatively new company started by Elon Musk, who helped create PayPal and runs the electric car company Tesla Motors. Sierra Nevada has been in the space busi-ness for 25 years but mostly on a much smaller scale than Boeing.

NASA’s commercial crew devel-opment program started with seven companies. The other companies that were not chosen can still build private rocketships and NASA still has the option to hire them to ferry astronauts at a later date, NASA spokesman Trent Perrotto said.

Virtual humans may be getting real-world jobs, training psychiatrists. New technology makes it possible for virtual humans to interact with a therapist via a computer, while mimicking the symptoms of a patient with a clinical psychological disorder, Albert “Skip” Rizzo told colleagues at the American Psychological Associa-tion’s annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., today (Aug. 3).

Videos of conversations between a virtual character and a therapist in training resemble video chats with a character from The Sims, a virtual-reality game. Speech recognition software allows the virtual patients to answer questions, so the therapist can make a preliminary diagnosis.

The virtual patients include “Jus-tin,” is a 16-year-old with a conduct disorder who is being forced by his

family to participate in therapy, and the more advanced iteration, “Jus-tina,” a sexual assault victim who was designed to have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

In an initial test, 15 psychiatry residents were asked to perform a 15-minute interaction with Justina. Riz-zo’s lab at the University of Southern California is also developing virtual veterans with depression and suicidal thoughts; they are intended to help train clinicians and military person-nel to spot those at risk for suicide or violence.

Over the long-term, Rizzo hopes to create a library of virtual patients representing many diagnoses to be used in training psychiatrists and psy-chologists, who currently train using role-playing followed by supervised work with real patients.

WASHINGTON — NASA picked three aerospace compa-nies Friday to build small rocketships to take astronauts to the International Space Station. This is the third phase of NASA’s efforts to get private space companies to take over the job of the now-retired space shuttle. The companies will share more than $1.1 billion. Two of the ships are capsules like in the Apollo era and the third is closer in design to the space shuttle.

Toll in Uganda’s Ebola outbreak rises to 16: WHO

16 people in Uganda, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday, increasing the previ-ous toll by one. “Today we have

50 suspected cases and 16 dead,” WHO spokesman Tarek Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva.

For the time being the epidemic was restricted to the west of the country, Jasarevic said, adding that a single case reported in Kam-pala in the south of the country was the result of an infected per-son being brought to the capital.

Ebola broke out in early July in Uganda’s western Kibale district, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) from Kampala, and around 50 kilometres from the border with Democratic Republic of Congo.

The virus causes internal and external bleeding and spreads by direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of infected persons, according to the World Health Organization.

The rare haemorrhagic dis-ease, named after a small river in DR Congo, killed 37 people in western Uganda in 2007 and at least 170 in the north of the country in 2000.

Neighbouring nations -- in-cluding Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Tanzania -- have warned people to report to health centres in case of Ebola-like symptoms.

KUTA - Orphan kids that joined soul surf project Bali’s program joined a special surflesson by none other than Bethany Hamilton.

Bethany Hamilton is on Bali after receiving a wild card in the world famous Rip Curl cup Padang Padang. But Bethany is also famous through her book and movie called soul surfer in which she tells her story of being a shark attack survi-vor. Bethany lost her arm during the shark attack but recovered, and with a few adjustments on her surfboard she is a surfpro!

Bethany being on Bali was a great chance for soul surf project Bali. Who else than Bethany can show our orphan kids more than that whoever you are, whatever your handicap is or whatever your background is, if you have a dream.. You can reach the top!

Already 5 years ago when the foundation was set up Bethany’s book was an inspiration for the founder of the foundation. He even has chosen to use the words soul surf in the name of the foundation, inspired by Bethany’s story.

The kids, living in Benih Harapan orphanange and in the streetchildren shelter YPKA, arrived at 3pm at double 66 beach at the Rip Curl school of surf, were geared up with Rip Curl equipments, and started their surflesson. With the help of Rip Curl surf instructors and Bethany, the kids surfed for about an hour.

After the lesson the kids could meet and greet Bethany, had a snack, and had the opportunity to take a picture with Bethany and to get her signature. Rip Curl Asia gave away 5 surfboards to the kids together with a big amount of rice and noodles to the two orphanages.

This water crisis has occurred since last month, whereas their paddy plants are averagely of one month old and in desperate need of water supply. As dry-ing out severely, the soil in the paddy fields is starting to crack. Then, it is followed by the yel-lowing rice stalks. “We are just able to surrender because within the past month the water supply was trickling and triggering a drought,” said Wayan Sueca, 50, one of the farmers.

Sueca said that such trickling water supply happened for the first time. By and large, the river water abundantly flowed into the people’s rice fields. “We do not know the cause why the water supply shrinks and trickles,” he complained. This condition was

further exacerbated by the lack of rain. According to Sueca, if it rained heavily, farmers still could take advantage of rainwater to ir-rigate their fields. Now, the rain was minimal. As consequence, their paddy plants could not grow normally. Due to water crisis, farmers did not dare to fertilize their plants. If forced, the rice stalks would likely die.

The farmers had not calculated the number of losses due to this catastrophe. They hoped it would rain soon normally. Otherwise, they would certainly face a har-vest failure. Sueca said the total paddy plants in the territory of Subak Dalem approximately reached 99 hectares. Of that amount, they were averagely hit by water crisis. (kmb30)

Most of the destinations devel-oped were the tourism with spe-cial interest becoming one of the action programs to be developed within the next three years.

According to Mari, promo-tional strategy of special interest tourism needed to be improved because the potential was getting greater which included trekking, snorkeling, diving and golf. “For special interest tourism, we have been preparing a program of ac-tion for the next 3 years to boost the marine tourism, especially diving, sport recreation includ-ing golf, cruise sightseeing and MICE tourism,” she said.

Development focus of the 16 tourist destinations included Medan-Toba and surrounding areas for geo-tourism, Seribu Islands for marine tourism, Ja-karta and surrounding areas for cultural heritage, Borobudur and surrounding areas for cul-tural heritage, Bromo-Tengger-Semeru and surrounding areas for ecotourism, and Lake Batur-Kintamani and surrounding areas for geo-tourism.

Besides, there were also Men-

jangan-Pemuteran and surround-ing areas in Bali for marine tourism, Kuta-Sanur-Nusa Dua and surrounding areas in Bali for marine tourism, Rinjani and surrounding areas in NTB for ecotourism, Komodo and sur-rounding areas in NTT for eco-tourism as well as Ende, Flores and surrounding areas in NTT for ecotourism.

Other destinations included Tanjung Puting and surround-ing areas in Central Kalimantan for ecotourism, Toraja and sur-rounding areas in South Sulawesi for cultural heritage, Bunaken and surrounding areas in North Sulawesi for marine tourism, Wakatobi and surrounding areas in Southeast Sulawesi for marine tourism, and Raja Ampat and sur-rounding areas in West Papua for marine tourism.

“Focus of tourist destination development totally lies in 12 provinces specialized in the maintenance and revitalization, while some of them are pioneer-ing development such as in Tan-jung Puting, Wakatobi and Raja Ampat,” she said.

According to her, the special interest tourism should be sup-ported by adequate infrastruc-ture, where one of which was

the increase in connectivity. “This aspect is the key factor for developing special interest tour-ism and increasing the tourist

visit. By all means, promotion is needed to describe what can be done in these destinations,” she added. (010)

Obama, wearing a white golf shirt, khaki pants and sunglasses, boarded Marine One at Andrews Air Force Base after about six hours on the golf course en route to Camp David. He was joined by a small group of friends and aides that included White House chef Sam Kass, a frequent golf partner.

He returns to campaign mode soon enough, with fundraisers in Con-necticut on Monday and campaign rallies in Colorado on Wednesday and Thursday. Next weekend, Obama will hold several birthday-themed fundraisers in Chicago, including one at his family’s South Side home. Obama’s campaign used the event to drum up small-dollar donations

before the end of the July fundraising deadline, offering two lucky winners the chance to attend the fundraiser at Obama’s red brick home.

In an email to supporters, Obama warned that his birthday “could be the last one I celebrate as president of the United States, but that’s not up to me — it’s up to you.” Obama’s team has warned that he could be outspent by Republicans and GOP candidate Mitt Romney.

Obama got some early birthday wishes on Thursday during a rally in Florida, when supporters serenaded him with “Happy Birthday.” The president joked that his birthday wishes “probably would have to do with electoral votes. Winning Florida

wouldn’t be a bad birthday present.”Republicans offered tongue-in-

cheek birthday greetings. The Repub-lican National Committee delivered a birthday cake to their counterparts at the Democratic National Commit-tee on Friday featuring a picture of a smiling Obama next to the words, “You didn’t bake this.”

The inscription was a reference to a line from an Obama speech last month in which he said, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.” Romney has seized upon the line to question Obama’s commitment to small business while Obama and Democrats have said the quote was taken out of context.

DNC officials promptly sent the cake back to RNC headquarters, along with a copy of a recent report by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center that found that Romney’s tax proposal would give millionaires a broad tax cut at the expense of tax breaks enjoyed by many middle-class families.

China’s newest city might appear to be a tranquil outpost in the South China Sea, but the beaches and palm trees of Sansha are at the heart of a growing territorial dispute.

The so-called “city” is on Yongxing, one of many small islands, reefs and shoals that make up the disputed Paracel Islands spread-ing over the northern part of the sea.

Beijing claims most of the South China Sea, which is home to vital shipping lanes and possesses varying degrees of proven and estimated oil and gas deposits.

The formation of an administration in Sansha, which will be responsible for China’s interests in the South China Sea is just its latest salvo.

Taiwan and ASEAN members the Phil-

ippines, Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia all make rival claims on areas of the sea, while the United States is also watching China’s increased assertiveness closely.

A US State Department spokesman said in a statement Friday that Washington was “concerned by the increase in tensions in the South China Sea”.

The establishment of an administration in Sansha and a new military garrison there “runs counter to collaborative diplomatic efforts to resolve differences and risk further escalating tensions in the region”, he added.

China reacted swiftly. Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said the US remarks sent “a seriously wrong signal, which is not conducive to the efforts safeguarding the peace and stability of the South China Sea and the Asia Pacific region”.

SEOUL, South Korea — Kim Jong Un the marshal became Kim Jong Un the statesman as he talked with Chinese political dignitaries in meetings state media reported Friday that were his first official foray into foreign affairs since becoming North Ko-rea’s leader.

Kim told Wang Jiarui, head of the Com-munist Party’s international affairs office, that his government is focused on building the economy, then invited the Chinese delega-tion to a banquet Thursday, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported. The Korean Central News Agency reported the meeting without details on their discussions.

The occasion was Kim’s diplomatic debut as leader of North Korea, seven months after he took power following the December death of his father, longtime leader Kim Jong Il. Kim Jong Un, who is believed to be 29, has been swift in moving to build loyalty among North Korea’s 24 million people and to es-tablish control over key institutions such as the military and ruling Workers’ Party.

He also has been quick to show his rule will differ in style from that of his father, who kept his personal life out of the state media, rarely traveled abroad and met only selectively with foreign dignitaries.

After gaining the new title of marshal and shuffling the military leadership last month, Kim Jong Un made the surprise introduc-tion of his wife, Ri Sol Ju. Kim also has emphasized raising the standard of living as a main goal of his leadership, an objective laid out for him by his father.

Tabanan (Bali Post) –

The bad weather hitting South Bali waters have caused Tabanan fishermen confused with at least 80 units of bubu (bamboo capturing device) were taken by the high tide which so causing loss up to millions of Rupiah and so they chose to take a mass holiday in avoiding danger in the sea. The incident happened a week ago as before they were placing it in the mid ocean. As they take it out the tide hit it which happens again several days later as stated by Ketut Nantra (63), fishermen from Pasut Beach, Tibubiu Village, Kerambitan last Friday (3/8).

It was stated one bubu priced IDR 80,000 where one fisherman has 20 bubu planted one fishing time. The bubu was sank to the ocean supported by a concrete and inside it has little fishes which if they’re lucky, a lobster will go in it and they got one. Fishermen still want to find the bubu they have placed yet it seemed

they have been destroyed due to the tides. With the weather like this, it is unknown when they will be able to go back to sea. The same thing stated by fisherman Made Bedeng (55) the reaching 3 meters ocean tide seemed not to show when they will be able to go again. “It’s been 21 days we didn’t go to sea, many bubu have been gone,” Bedeng explained.

Fishermen have secured their boats in a shed to avoid it being hit by the waves. Au-gust has been always filled with high tides and usually the best tides occurred in January also good fishing season would be October – December. “We in here depend on lobster. With this mass holiday we’re taking, the commodity of lobster still high IDR 200,000 per kilogram. Fishermen have converted their work for now such as in the rice field, there were also cleaning their boats and preparing bubu or net. All of us hoped the wave will be better and activity gone to normal,” Bedeng concluded. (kmb30)

Singaraja (Bali Post) –

The goods terminal at Ahmad Yani Street, Singaraja, was forced closed since the beginning of this month due to a drainage reparation project and road tarring in the terminal. Due to it, retribution usually happening from goods vehicles coming to Singaraja evaporated as it couldn’t be taken. From what’s seen on Friday (3/8) the con-dition inside the terminal was quiet, workers who usually supervise there were not there at all moreover the retribution office was closed. Head of Transportation Facilities, Made Yudana, as permitted by Head of Buleleng Trans-portation Agency, Gede Witama, in his office stated the terminal’s retribution is being stopped since the closing on early August. The closure will go on for 21 working days. “This it to ease

reparation workers to work and not disturbing any traffic route in front of the terminal. During this reparation terminal workers still works at office,” Yudana explained.

These projects have used at least IDR 158 million with details IDR 77 million for drainage reparation while IDR 81 million for tarring. The condition of the terminal has been a lot damaged for a long itme and the reparation proposal was just agreed and commenced. With this situation there hasn’t been any ve-hicles diversion happening to avoid any traffic disturbance as vehicles have to be stopped on the Singaraja-Seririt route. Besides that if terminal is not closed and retribution taken outside the terminal, the Agency is worried it will seem like an illegal charges operation which so it is decided terminal’s closed and retribu-tion stopped for now. ATHENS - Greece is leaning towards issuing T-bills to plug a cash squeeze this month as resumption of its bailout funding hinges on a positive assessment by European Union and IMF inspectors, its deputy finance minister told Sunday’s Kathimerini newspaper.

Cash-strapped and behind targets agreed under a 130 billion euro ($160.4 billion) financial rescue package, Athens faces a 3.2 billion euro bond maturity on August 20.

“The situation (with cash reserves) is borderline and will remain so until Sep-tember when the (EU/IMF/ECB) report will be concluded,” Deputy Finance Minister Christos Staikouras told the paper in an interview.

“We are managing cash reserves care-fully and exploring several solutions, such as an increase in the issuance of T-bills. We will choose the optimal so-lution in agreement with our partners,” he said.

Shut out of bond markets, Greece is-sues T-bills on a monthly basis to refund maturing short-term paper. It needs to roll over 2.6 billion euros of six- and three-month T-bills this month.

German newspaper Die Welt said on Saturday the European Central Bank agreed on Thursday to raise the upper limit of T-bills the Bank of Greece can ac-

cept in exchange for emergency loans.Staikouras said the government was

finalizing an 11.6 billion euro package of spending cuts to bring the bailout program back on track, hoping a positive report by the so-called troika of inspec-tors will release the next aid payment.

The troika will meet with Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras on Sunday. Athens is keen to convince its interna-tional lenders it will stick to the pre-scribed economic adjustment plan before asking for any break such as more time to apply the austerity measures.

“The more credible we are in attaining goals and commitments, the more room we will have to seek amendments to the pursued support program,” Staikouras told the paper.

Greece has narrowly dodged bank-ruptcy several times before, with the government carrying out a juggling act, holding off from paying some suppliers until the next tranche of aid from lend-ers arrives.

Staikouras said the three-party coali-tion government is trying to avoid a euro zone exit and striving to achieve a favor-able outcome.

“The good scenario we expect to make happen is getting a positive report from our partners, conclude the recapitaliza-tion of banks, achieve an extension of the fiscal adjustment and see the economy recover,” Staikouras said.

JAL, which competes against All Nippon Airways in Japan, filed for one of the country’s biggest-ever bankruptcies in January 2010, saddled with debt, unprofitable routes and a bloated workforce. It received a 350 billion yen govern-ment-orchestrated bailout.

The Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp. of Japan, the body overseeing JAL’s bailout, said Friday it will sell the 175 million shares it owns in JAL as part of the listing that is slated for Sept.

19. The value of that share sale is estimated at more than 600 billion yen ($7.6 billion), according to Kyodo News service.

JAL has been aiming for a comeback by trimming routes, slashing jobs and entering the low-cost carrier business, which is still relatively new for Japan because of a protected airline industry. It has returned to profitability recently.

JAL in the past had been bat-tered by safety lapses and balloon-ing pension obligations.

NEW YORK — The price of oil posted its big-gest gain in more than month, jumping nearly 5 percent, after the government reported a sharp rise in jobs growth for July.

Benchmark U.S. crude on Friday rose $4.27 to end the day at $91.40 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which sets the price for oil imported into the U.S., climbed $3.04, or 2.9 percent, to $108.94 per barrel in London.

Prices climbed after the government said U.S. employers added 163,000 jobs in July. Last month’s hiring was the best since February, though it wasn’t enough to drive down the unemployment rate. Prices for oil and gasoline tend to rise on signs of strength in the economy, which increases energy demand.

“There’s a lot of optimism following the jobs report,” said Tom Kloza, publisher and chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service. Also, the number of new jobs wasn’t enough to dissuade investors that the U.S. Federal Reserve could take more action to spur growth, he said.

After rising sharply the first three weeks of July, the price of oil steadied as investors waited to see if central banks in the U.S. and Europe would an-nounce new stimulus measures. On Friday, crude rose 4.9 percent, the biggest one-day increase since June 29, when it rose 9.4 percent.

In other energy futures trading, heating oil added 8.4 cents to finish at $2.926 per gallon while whole-sale gasoline added 6.1 cents to finish at $2.931 per gallon. Natural gas was dropped 4.3 cents to finish at $2.877 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The Malaysian tourists repre-sented 7.55 percent of the overall tourist arrivals in the first semester of 2012 reaching 1.42 million, Head of the Bali Provincial Statis-tics Office I Gde Suarsa said.

Compared to the same period last year, the Malaysian tourist arrivals in the January-June 2012 period jumped 29.01 percent,

he said.As a result, Malaysia overtook

Japan as the third biggest source of Bali’s foreign tourist arrivals over the period, he said.

Gde Suarsa noted that the number of tourists from the top ten sources of Bali’s tourist arriv-als increased significantly in the first semester of 2012.

WhAT is exactly the signifi-cance of pajegan mask? Among the Balinese community, the pajegan mask dance is frequently called sacred dance (wali), because it has something to do with yajña cer-emony (Hindu religious rituals).

This dance-drama, according to the mask artist of the Indonesia Arts Institute (ISI) Denpasar, Nyoman Catra, was always performed by a single dancer with a storyline. Due to such solo performance, it then raised so diverse interpretations on the definition of the mask.

Some call the pajegan mask to originate from the Balinese word mamajeg or doing an entire job alone—where an actor played the entire mask characters. Meanwhile, there was also another version call-ing it Pejagan mask which meant to keep up. The mask dance was held to ‘look after’ in order along the implementation of yajña children would not interfere with the high priest chairing the rituals. During the ritual process, the mask perfor-mance was used to make the imple-mentation of yajña run without any obstacles and the high priest was capable of performing the worship solemnly.

However, the Pejagan was actu-ally carried out by telling stories. In other words, during the perfor-mance of the mask dance, the artist attempted to ‘interpret’ the meaning of rituals. By doing so, people could

understand about the real mean-ing behind the implementation of the rituals. Within that context, the mask performance played an important role in the process of transformation of religious value--a very urgent mission. On that ac-count, the mask was often used as a medium to interpret the meaning of ritual and served as ‘sermon’ since the past time.

Catra also added that pajegan mask was identical to the procession of Sidakarya mask performance. In relation to this matter, at the end of the ritual procession was usually staged the Sidakarya mask.

Performance of the pajegan mask staged a hard mask depicting an energetic young character. If analogized to the passage of time, he was the early morning with a bright light, while the old mask depicted a person who had been growing older – whose energy was getting limited. Or it described the passage of time that had been lean-ing toward the west or afternoon.

In the meantime, at the end of the performance was presented the Sidakarya mask marked with the expression of laugh and scary at the same time. This dualism of expression could be interpreted as the journey to the next world where a person could go to heaven or hell. It was determined by karma vasana or traces of the deeds in previous lifetime. Expression of laughing

described a good karma that led to heaven, while the creepy expres-sion described bad karma leading a person to hell.

Sidakarya mask, according to Catra, could be interpreted as a depiction of life cycle, starting from old age, died and then took a form of a child again. On that account, staging of the mask was regularly accompanied with the pursuit of small children. As consequence, it was often called the mask of pur-suit. Having captured the children, they were given some amount of money. Not infrequently, it initially

made children frightened, but they were finally happy after being given a ‘reward.’

Pajegan mask was generally performed in the Bhuta Yajña and Pitri Yajña. There were few pieces of masks staged in the performance of pajegan mask that should follow a fixed sequence. Firstly, it was commenced with hard mask and then followed by old mask. In the second order, it was completed with description of drama of life. On that account, it was then consisting of chief minister (penasar), king (dalem) and royal servants (bon-

dres). Finally, it was presented the Sidakarya mask depicting double images namely laughing and scary expression.

In order to dance the mask well, Catra said, other than through training or learning, there were some rules to be followed includ-ing agem, tandang, tangkis and tangkep. Additionally, one should have a good talent, experience, and taksu or divine inspiration. By such combination, the mask dancer would definitely be able to provide a good spectacle and valuable guid-ance. (BTN/BP)

Nineteen workers were report-ed missing from a hydroelectric power plant after water gushed into the facility in Uttarakhand state’s Uttarkashi region, local administrator R. Rajesh Kumar told AFP.

The workers were missing “fol-lowing a cloudburst that hit the re-gion” on Saturday, Kumar said by telephone from Uttarkashi, some 350 kilometres (220 miles) from the state capital Dehradun.

They were believed to have been working at a site on the plant that was under construction, of-ficials said.

The plant belongs to state-run utility Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd., officials said.

“We have sent rescue teams to

the project site as well to other areas hit by flash floods,” Kumar said.

Seven villagers were also swept away in floods that hit the district of Uttarkashi, a Hindu pil-grimage site, Kumar said, while some devotees were stranded.

Authorities cancelled leave for essential workers and shut down several hydroelectric power projects in the state to guard against damage from the rains, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said in Dehradun.

Engineers were working on reopening blocked roads leading to popular shrines to enable the stranded pilgrims to leave the area, Bahuguna said.

Disaster management offi-cials said scores of houses in the

flooded area were damaged by the rains.

Torrential rains on Friday night also hit the nearby state of Hi-machal Pradesh, drowning a man in his vehicle, washing away sev-eral bridges and partly destroying a key highway, officials said in local capital Shimla.

India’s monsoon rains that nor-mally come each summer arrived late this year, meaning there has been little rainfall in almost half of the country, sparking fears of a drought.

Nevertheless, there has been heavy rainfall in places, with rains last month in the northeast killing more than 120 people and forcing another six million to flee their homes.

TOKYO — A grandson of ex-U.S. President Harry Truman, who ordered the atomic bombings of Japan during World War II, is in Hiroshima to attend a memorial service for the victims.

Clifton Truman Daniel visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on Saturday and laid a wreath for the 140,000 people killed by the Aug. 6, 1945, bombing authorized by his grandfather. Another atomic blast in Nagasaki three days later killed 70,000 more.

“I think this cenotaph says it all — to honor the dead to not forget and to make sure that we never let this happen again,” Daniel said after offering a silent prayer.

Daniel, 55, is in Japan to attend ceremonies next week in Hiro-shima and Nagasaki marking the 67th anniversary of the bombings. His visit, the first by a member of the Truman family, is sponsored by the peace group Sadako Legacy, named after Sadako Sasaki, an A-bomb victim who died of leukemia at age 12. While in the hospital, Sadako folded hundreds of paper cranes after hearing a legend that people who make 1,000 origami cranes can be granted a wish. Origami cranes have since become a symbol of peace.

Daniel, a former journalist, met Sadako’s 71-year-old brother, Masahiro Sasaki, who survived the bombing, at a peace event in New York in 2010. They agreed to work together to deepen understanding between the two countries, which are still divided over the question of the legitimacy of the atomic attacks.

“There are other opinions, there are other points of view, and I don’t think we ever finish talking about that,” Daniel said after visiting a museum at the memorial. “The important thing is to keep talking, to talk about all of it.”

Daniel said in a statement that he decided to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki because he needed to know the consequences of his grandfather’s decision as part of his own efforts to help achieve a nuclear-free world. He said he hoped to hear stories from survivors about how they overcame their adversity.

Daniel also is to meet with the mayors of Hiroshima and Na-gasaki and participate in discussions with students.

Susumu Miura, a 78-year-old Hiroshima native, wrote in the newspaper Tokyo Shimbun that he was enraged when he learned that many Americans still support the decision to drop the atomic bombs.

“But when I heard on the news that former President Truman’s grandson is visiting Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I felt as if I lost some weight from my chest,” Miura wrote in an op-ed article.

AntaraJAKARTA - Vice Minister of

Energy and Mineral Resources Rudi Rusbiandini denied on Sun-day that Law No. 22 of 2001 on Oil and Gas has given priority to foreign contractors over domestic companies.

“Foreign contractors only per-form the government`s duties. They receive fees of 15 percent for finding oil and fees of 30 per-cent for finding gas. So I wonder which of the clauses in the law

has favored foreign investors,” he said.

A number of Islamic figures and mass organizations have filed a demand for a judicial review of the law with the Constitutional Court (MK).

They alleged the law gave priority to foreign investors over domestic companies so that it violates Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution.

Rudi said the state remains in full control of oil and gas reserves.

“Oil and gas sovereignty fully remains in the hands of the state. We only need foreign contractors to tap what we really want to find,” he said.

He said cooperation contracts with foreign contractors had been signed along before the law on oil and gas was enacted in 2001.

In performing their duties, the foreign contractors supervised tightly by the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Body (BP Migas), he said.

The move added to the heat of controversy over which of the country`s law enforcing agencies has the right to investigate the case .

The country`s Corruption Eradi-cation Commission (KPK) already launched investigation of the case and has named four suspects includ-ing the three police officers.

Police yesterday announced it had five suspects in the corruption case over the procurement of driv-ing simulators for the police`s traffic division worth Rp198.7 billion.

However, Insp. Gen. Djoko Susilo, the main suspect named by the anti-graft agency was not included among the suspects named by police.

The three officers arrested on Saturday included Djoko`s deputy Brig. Gen. Didik Purnomo and two middle ranking police officers.

“It is true , the three police officers and a civilian, have been arrested,” police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafly Amar said here today.

The police move has drawn strong criticism from lawmakers and legal experts accusing police of abuse of power violating the law that bans other law enforcing agen-cies from interfering in cases being investigated by KPK.

The fact that Djoko is not in-cluded in the police`s list of suspects raised doubt about the motive of the police`s move.

Police chief detective Coms. Gen. Sutarman said police would not hand over the suspects to KPK.

Shift focus Meanwhile, Coordinating Minis-

ter for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Djoko Suyanto, has urged the print, electronic and internet media

to focus on the legal aspects of the alleged corruption case involving the country`s traffic police force.

“I would like to appeal to the mass media to shift its focus from the dispute over authority between the Corruption Eradication Com-mission (KPK) and the National Police, to the settlement and legal process of the alleged corruption case in the Traffic Police Corps,” Suyanto said.

He said the mass media has been focusing its energies on reporting the power struggle between the KPK and the national police to determine which body was entitled to handle the corruption case, instead of help-ing find a solution.

“I will not question the legality of the case but I have to express concern with the media`s reportage, which has pitted the KPK against the police,” Suyanto added.

He also pointed out that the KPK and the police should have been more transparent in their investiga-tions in order to allow the media to monitor and report the case more comprehensively to the public.

Suyanto stressed the importance of the media`s role as a supervisor of the legal process, so that it stays transparent and in line with existing laws and legal procedures.

The KPK and the police will be unable to remain objective and join forces to eradicate corruption if the media continues to focus on their authority tussle, he added.

Meanwhile, the chief minister has also asked the KPK and the police to explain the reason behind their public disagreement.

“The public has the right to know the real reason behind the problem and receive a detailed explanation from the two institutions,” he said.

JAKARTA — Villagers and park rangers are using torches and firecrackers to herd out about 20 endangered Sumatran elephants that wandered into an Indonesian village in search of food.

Local forestry office head Warsito said the elephants en-

tered Braja Indah village in Lampung province Thursday and were still there Friday night.

More than 200 elephants live within Way Kambas National Park near the village. Fewer than 3,000 Sumatran elephants are left in the wild, and environ-mentalists warn they’ll go extinct without protection.

Warsito told El-Shinta radio

that a negotiation is ongoing to compensate villagers since the expulsion route passes through their farms.

At least five elephants have been poisoned since April , while in December a farmer was trampled to death. Villagers say they’ll kill the elephants if authorities don’t protect their farms.

Associated PressYOGYAKARTA — A 3-ton

whale shark has died after it was stranded at a beach on Indonesia’s main island of Java.

Local conservationist Dessy Zahara Angelina says the 13-meter (42-foot) shark washed ashore late

Wednesday on Pandansimo beach in Yogyakarta province. She says the huge fish, a protected species, was too weak to survive despite rescue efforts, and it died hours later.

On Saturday, rescuers managed to return a stranded sperm whale to

the sea in West Java after it spent four days trapped on Karawang beach. But the animal was found dead hours later. The rescue had been hampered by hundreds of onlookers in fishing boats that blocked rescuers from leading the animal to deeper waters.

He said the obstacle to absorb local products as set forth in the regional regulation on tourism was the quality standard and product continuity. “So far, the matter of continuity and quality has become our problems in absorbing the local products,” he said.

The Head of Badung Government Tourism Office, Cok Raka Darmawan, previously stated that hoteliers should purchase the products of local handicrafts. It was set forth in the Regional Regulation on Tourism to help grow the creative economy. In the regulation was governed about the liability of companies in Badung to prioritize local products, both the agricultural and handicraft products.

“We’re not forcing, but it has been set forth in the regulation, so they are obliged to purchase the handicrafts according to their needs. They can order the products directly through representative office of the regional handicraft council (Dekranasda),” he said.

Such an endeavor was taken to help the marketing of local products. On that account, the tourism sector could work together with the agriculture and handicrafts. Obligation to purchase the products of local community would continue to be disseminated to hotels and restaurants in Badung. (kmb27)

Kamasan as the centre of the painting expansion and traditional carved object is the name of a village in the Subdistrict and the Regency of Klungkung. Geographi-cally, the Kamasan village is the village in the lowland of Klotok Beach or 3 km from Jumpai Beach. The distance from Denpasar to this village is 43 km, can be reached by motor vehicles, the entire road headed the object that is the centers of the painting or carved industry has been asphalted.

Kamasan is a traditional commu-nity of the painting artist. Because of intimate and old of the traditional painting expansion in Kamasan, the artists mention that the paintings in Kamasan has a special style wich is called the traditional Kamasan painting. The art talent grows also to other works of art such as art carved gold and silver and also art carved bullet. Despite from material aspect wich is used, colour cloth of metal follow the change that happen, but the specific characteristic continue to apparently in the theme of the painting or carved that is depict-ing leading figures of the puppet. Leading figures of the puppet that become the theme of the painting or carved object referred to the story of Mahabharata or Ramayana, also Arjuna Wiwaha or Suthasoma ballad. Therefore, the painting and carved object of Kamasan style or the Kamasan Puppet could be said rather old from the context of its history, that up to now still looks

its visible intact. According to the impression of the international col-lectors, the Kamasan style painting is considered still very soft and sophisticated, clean, not full with details that unimportant and has a very clear order of the story. The core of the painting or carved object is the puppet so it brought the spe-cial attraction for the artist or tour-ists who visited to the Kamasan village.

K a m a s a n or “Ka - emas (gold) - an” is the name that quite old for people’s com-muni ty who work in the adequate field of “gold”, the community is called Pande Emas. It is c c o r d a n c e w i t h t h e name of one of the series (banjar) in the Kama-san village. T h e a r -chaeologi-cal hill that was found took the form of thrones of the stone, the menhir statue, stone mortar, the stone manger and the monolith with cylinder shape, road paths that was covered by the river stone that had been found during 1976 and 1977, that spread in Kamasan villages,

Gelgel and Tojan, gave the guid-ance that the community is quite old. From the archaeological find-ings also gave the guidance that the tradition stone (megalitikum) had coloured the life of the community in Kamasan and surrounding area, the life of the community of pre Hindus that was rooted in the period of neolitikum (+ 2000 SM years). The Megalitik tradition is absorbed

by undagi or building work-

er and to pande an in the period afterwards. Since the kingdom concentrated in Gelgel (1380-1651), The King of Ida Dalem introducing Pande as a worker of gold and iron.

The art product of gold or silver

carved that had the shape of the plate (such as tray etc.) was made as jewel-lery equipment of Palace of Suweca Linggaarsa in the Gelgel Temple. Apart from art carved, developed also the puppet painting for the deco-ration on cloth took the form of the flag (such as the banner), ornamental cloth that become decoration acces-sories in holy places (the temple) or the building in the palace complex. Since Dalem Waturenggong (1460-1550) the holder of the throne II

held the power, the Gelgel Kingdom r e a c h e d the peak of fame, then K a m a s a n village be-c o m e t h e craftsman’s village. Some of Adminis-tratif Units (Banjar) es-pecially Ban-jar Sangging and Pande Mas could be said as Banjar Gilda or the working group commu-nity, the crafts-man that consist of houses as well as workshops

where they live, work and serve to the King until at the end of their life. The king is gazed as the god of the king who is assigned to guard the world (the universe and his contents)

so the harmony and the balance of the world can be reached.

The King should protect and maintain the existence of art be-cause it considered as an important part to keep the harmony and bal-ance of the world. When the central of Kingdom Power moved from Gelgel to Klungkung by Dewa Agung Jambe in 1686, the inherit of Kresna Kepakisan Dinasty still maintain the Kamasan Village as the village of painting and carved object artist. But, nowadays after Klungkung become the central city of one of the regencies in Bali, and the inherit of King and noble become the official of Indonesian government, the banjar (adminis-tratif unit) of Sangging and Pande Mas no longer become banjar of Gilda (working group).

Even though so, the artist of Banjar Sangging, Siku, Geria, Kacangdawa, Peken Pande and Tabanan keep proucing painting and carved object with Kamasan or puppet style. The expansion of the craftsman’s product increasingly heterogeneous, not only limited to gold and silver carved but also art carved that have material copper or brass and bullets. The artistic prod-uct took the form of the painting or carved object also ordered by local and foreign tourists. Even so, in line with the increase in tourists’ visit, shops souvenir and art in Klung-kung, or the Gianyar art market and Denpasar as well as hotels also become the repeater customer from the product of style art of the puppet in Kamasan.

Hirvonen was quickest on the two runs through the epic Ouninpohja stage that concluded the rally, reducing Loeb’s lead to 6.1 seconds and securing maximum power stage bonus points in the process. But the Finn could not grab a home win and had to watch his team-mate move another step closer to a ninth straight WRC title.

Loeb and Hirvonen led the way for the vast majority of the rally, as Ford struggled to match the Citroens’ pace. Jari-Matti Latvala claimed third at home,

21s clear of team-mate Petter Solberg but 35s away from the lead.

Mads Ostberg fought back from a final day propshaft drama to reclaim fifth from Ott Tanak. Thierry Neuville and Evgeny Novikov had also been in top six conten-tion early on, before crashing and having to resort to superally.

The final points went to regular Finland guest star Matti Rantanen, Jari Ketomaa’s DMACK-shod Ford, Martin Prokop and Sebastien Ogier’s S2000 Skoda.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. –- Serie A giant AC Milan topped Honduran squad Olimpia 3-1 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. in the second game of the Italian team’s U.S. preseason tour. Milan was led by the strong play of midfielder Antonio No-cenino, who had a hand in all three goals.

Olimpia, perhaps struggling for fitness following a CONCA-CAF Champions League match midweek, surrendered three goals in the first half. In the 10th minute, Robinho struck a ball outside the 18 that was saved ag-ilely by Honduran international ‘keeper Noel Valladares. Fifteen minutes later, Robinho scored a curling shot after a pass from Nocerino.

Nocerino added two goals to Milan’s tally at the end of the second half, putting the game far out of reach of Olimpia. The second half saw little action on the scoring, as substitutions and adjusted shape affected both teams. Olimpia saw some con-solation late in the second half on a goal from Jose Escalante in the 72nd minute.

“Olimpia is a strong team, a team that can do some good things. In the second half they were strong,” Nocerino said. “The important thing for us is to train well and, so, we had a good chance to do that.”

Next up for Milan on its U.S. tour is a match against Real Madrid at Yankee Stadium in New York. That Madrid side features four players on the Spain national team which won Euro 2012. Riccardo Monto-livo, who lined up for Italy in the final match of that competi-tion, played in his first game for Milan following a transfer from Fiorentina.

“It was a good first game with new team. It is always difficult to start training with a new team especially with the heat the way it was today,” Montolivo said. “But nevertheless it was still a good fresh start, so now we have another game coming up on Wednesday and we have to be ready for the beginning of the new season.” Milan is expected a much sterner test against Los Blancos.

“Obviously Real Madrid is one of the best teams in the world, so it is going it is going to be a lot harder then today,” Montolivo said.

German veteran Tommy Haas reached his first final in Washington at the ATP/WTA hardcourt event on his seventh attempt with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat of top seed Mardy Fish. “To finally reach the final on my seventh time here is crazy,” said Haas, who did not commit an unforced error and lost only two points in serve in the first set.

“Who would have thought to have done that at my age. It means a lot to me, to be in this final is a great feeling.” The 34-year-old Haas will be aiming for his 14th career ATP Tour title on Sunday. Haas is currently ranked 36th in the world after starting the season at 205th due to a string of injuries including hip and elbow surgeries in recent years.

Fourth seeded Haas, who was

ranked as high as second on the ATP in 2002, will face second seed Alexandr Dolgopolov, who beat eighth seed Sam Querrey, 6-4, 6-4 in 74 minutes. Dolgopolov had eight aces and a break of serve per set. Dolgopolov will try to win his second ATP title after ending Quer-rey’s seven match win streak.

In the women’s final, Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia upset top seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1,

6-1 to win the third title of her career. Pavlyuchenkova won her semi-final just 24 hours earlier despite suffer-ing from a heat-related illness.

Haas will be playing his third final in his last five events. He dominated in the opening set but got some stiff resistance from Fish in the second. The American forced Haas to save a pair of break points in the second game of the set before the pair settled back into their battle on serve.

The German struck after saving a set point in the tenth game as he won a 19-point exchange to hold serve. Haas then took advantage with a break a game later in which Fish saved two break points with aces but double-faulted into a third, which Haas converted for 6-5.

Haas served it out a game later to end in 93 minutes with 21 win-ners and just seven unforced errors. “That doesn’t happen very often - especially with my game,” said the 16-year ATP veteran who is into his 24th final.

“I knew I had to come out ag-gressive,” said Haas. “Mardy is a tough player who is playing some of his best tennis now. He’s one of the best on the hardcourt and he’s been playing unbelievable this week.

Fish was ten months removed from his last semi-final in Tokyo last October. He did not compete for the USA in the Olympics after going through an accelerated heart-beat scare in the spring.

Phelps’ totals in four Olympics: 22 med-als, 18 golds, 51 races and 9,900 meters of swimming. “I’ve been able to do everything that I wanted,” he said. “If you can say that about your career, there’s no need to move forward. Time for other things.” Having hung up his suit, cap and goggles for the last time, the 27-year-old from Baltimore

is looking forward to the rest of his life.He wants to travel and see places beyond the pools and hotel

rooms of the last 12 years. His intended destinations include Australia and Europe. He wants to go cage diving among great white sharks in South Africa with Chad le Clos, the last man to beat him in the Olympics. “I’ve been able to see so many amaz-ing places in the world, but I’ve really never gotten to experience them,” Phelps said.

There’s golf and poker to be played, too. He can’t wait for his hometown Ravens to start another football season, and don’t be surprised if turns up to watch some soccer matches. “He’s a true sports fanatic,” Debbie Phelps said. And Mom knows best: “He needs time for himself first,” she said. Phelps still plans to be around the sport that made him rich and famous, saying, “I would like to try to take it to an even higher level than it is now.”

He certainly left it on a high note. Phelps regained the lead in the medley relay with his trademark butterfly stroke, then handed it over to freestyle anchor Nathan Adrian. Adrian brought it home in 3 minutes, 29.35 seconds. Japan took the silver in 3:31.26 and Australia got the bronze in 3:31.68. The team of Matt Grevers, Brendan Hansen, Phelps and Adrian hugged it out before Phelps waved and smiled to the crowd.

Later, he grew reflective, saying, “I’m a lot more relaxed than I thought I’d be in this moment.” Warming up before his last race, Phelps called his coach over to the side of the practice pool. He thanked Bob Bowman for helping him win all those medals, a feat they accomplished together. That private moment got to both of them. “I said, ‘My tears could hide behind my goggles. Yours are streaming down your face,’” Phelps said. “I wouldn’t be here today without everything he’s done for me. I love him to death.”

Bowman said: “I’ll never forget that as long as I live.” On a night when Phelps exited the world stage, Missy Franklin capped a brilliant Olympic debut by helping the U.S. win gold in the women’s medley relay — with a world-record time, no less.

The 17-year-old high school student from Colorado gives the U.S. hope for the post-Phelps era, having won five medals in London, including four golds to match Amy Van Dyken at the 1996 Atlanta Games for the most by an American female swimmer. She swam seven events, the same as Phelps.

“I don’t think his shoes will ever be filled. They’re so huge,” Franklin said. “Hopefully I can make little paths next to him.” The Americans dominated the medal count at the pool, finishing with 16 golds and 30 overall.

Honduras 3-2 and will face South Korea in the semi-finals of the men’s Olympic soccer tournament after they beat hosts Britain on penalties. Mexico will face Japan in the other semi-final after they beat Senegal 4-2 after extra time and Japan beat Egypt 3-0. South Korea will play Brazil at Old Traf-ford on Tuesday while Japan will play Mexico at Wembley on the same night.

After one of the greatest days in their Olympic history with six gold medals, Britain’s soccer players were looking to make his-tory of their own by reaching the Olympic soccer semis for the first time since 1948.

The match against South Ko-rea ended 1-1 after Aaron Ram-sey scored one penalty after 36 minutes and had one saved three minutes later after Ji Dong-Won had put Korea ahead in the 29th minute. There were no further goals in normal or extra time so the game went to a shootout.

After both teams converted their first four penalties, Daniel Sturridge’s poor effort was saved by Korean keeper Lee Bum-Young and Ki Sung-Yeung converted to give his side a 5-4 shoot-out win.

L O N D O N - The teary but

euphoric face of Jessica Ennis beamed out from news-stands across Britain on Sunday as Games fever swept a proud host nation basking in its greatest Olympic day in more than a century. “Hep, hep hooray,” declared the na-tion’s best-selling tabloid Sun newspa-per after Ennis won the heptathlon on a gold-rush Saturday that saw the host nation snap up six Olympic titles.

Photographs of Ennis, down-to-earth and smiley, were plastered all over the front pages in her moment of triumph - wrapped in the Union Jack flag and hailed as Queen of the Games, Superwoman, Golden Girl and Sensational. “Jess the best day ever,” declared the Daily Mail after

the country’s biggest single-day gold medal haul since 1908. “Britain’s drip-ping in gold.” “Happy and Glorious,” boomed the Independent after a day when the national anthem was heard repeatedly on the podium and sung by crowds cheering every new medal. Two golds in rowing and one at the cycling velodrome were followed by a hat-trick of victories in athletics from Ennis, Greg Rutherford (long jump) and Mo Farah.

Britain took their collection of golds to 14 at the London Games to lie third in the overall medals table behind the United States (26) and China (25).

“Their extraordinary efforts have brought rapture to streets, parks and living rooms in London and all over the country if not the planet,” London mayor Boris Johnson said in a statement.

of the Olympic women’s track cycling sprint on Sunday.

American boxer Queen Underwood will look to put behind her the misery of years of child abuse by winning the inaugural women’s lightweight Olympic title when the competition gets underway on Sunday.

The 28-year-old, whose father served six years in prison for abusing her and her elder sister, would provide just the sort of feel-good story to delight the authorities after lobbying to get women’s boxing included for these Games.

LONDON — Michael Phelps got up to leave his last news conference at the Olympic pool when his relay mates were asked if they thought he would re-ally stay retired. Before they could answer, Phelps smiled and said emphatically: “Yes, yes.” The most decorated Olympian called it a career on Saturday night with a fitting ending — a gold medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay at the London Games.

Britain’s Jessica Ennis poses for pho-tograhers after she won her women’s heptathlon 800m heat at the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium August 4, 2012. Ennis was the overall winner in the heptathlon.

Troubled American out to be first Queen of boxing

In all there will be 36 women bat-tling it out for three titles -- flyweight and middleweight being the other two.

Underwood and her two team-mates, flyweight Marlen Esparza and middleweight Claressa Shields, will also have the added incentive of suc-ceeding where their male counterparts have largely thus far failed in winning medals.

Underwood, who was born Quanit-ta but prefers the nickname Queen, will have really earned her spurs if she even makes it to the last four.

For the cards did not fall kindly for her at the draw where first up she has highly-rated British girl Natasha Jonas, a world bronze medallist, and then if successful the intimidating prospect of four-time world champion Katie Taylor of Ireland.

However, victory in that bout would assure her of a bronze medal at least and prove a turning point in her life.

“I would close my eyes and just dream about having a different life, because I thought that if I had this thing, this success, I’d feel like I was at a point of starting over,” she said.

“That dream carried me through a lot of days. I can be an example. I am a survivor of child abuse, and I became strong and independent.”

For Taylor the gold medal will set the seal on a remarkable career and, according to her father and coach Peter, see her retire aged just 26.

“After the Olympic Games we don’t know what she’s doing. I’d like her to retire,” said Taylor. “She’s been sparring with the lads every week and she has no kind of life outside boxing.

“That’s what I would like to see but what Katie wants to do could be differ-ent. Whatever she decides she’ll have the family backing 100 per cent.”

The host nation should enjoy gold success as Savannah Marshall is world champion in the middleweight division aged just 21 while Nicola Adams has claims too in the flyweight category as she is the European champion.

Whatever happens women’s box-ing will remain on the programme for the next Games but President Wu Ching-kuo wants to see it expand in terms of numbers competing and for that to happen it has to be perceived to have been a success.

“How they perform here at the Games is very important. The IOC will also look at their performances and if it is excellent it will be my duty to ask for more,” said the 65-year-old Taiwanese.

Brazil’s Neymar celebrates his goal during a quarterfinal men’s soccer match against Honduras at St James’ Park in Newcastle, England, during the London 2012 Summer Olympics, Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012.

Brazil survive scare, Britain lose on penalties

reduced to 10 men when Wilmer Crisanto was sent off for two swift yellow cards in the first half.

Leandro Damiao equalised eight minutes before the break, but the underdogs unexpectedly went back in front after 48 min-utes when Roger Espinoza found the net with a soft, low angled shot. Neymar brought Brazil back into the game with a 50th minute penalty before Leandro Damiao made it 3-2 10 minutes later with a well placed shot.

VERY DIFFICULT

Brazil coach Mano Menezes told reporters: “The game was very difficult as I expected it

to be. If we had scored one or two chances early in the game it might have been different, but the first Honduras goal unsettled the team.” Mexico survived a fight-back from Senegal in a thrilling match that delighted a crowd of almost 82,000 at Wembley who saw Senegal come from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 before two defen-sive errors allowed Mexico to win 4-2 in extra time.

Giovani Dos Santos and substi-tute Hector Herrera scored in extra time to put Mexico into the last four for the first time since they hosted the Olympics in 1968 and lost to Japan in the bronze medal match. Senegal were never out of contention though and after plenty of chances of their own pulled one back when tournament top scorer Moussa Konate headed home after 69 minutes.

It was his and Senegal’s fifth goal of the tournament, but seven minutes later substitute Ibra-hima Balde joined him on the scoresheet when he thundered in an unstoppable header to pull Senegal level.

Japan also made it through to the last four for the first time since 1968 after keeping a fourth consecutive clean sheet with a 3-0 win over Egypt.

The north African side were reduced to 10 men in the 41st minute at Old Trafford in Man-chester, where 70,000 fans turned up for the often maligned men’s Olympic soccer tournament. Ja-pan won with goals from Kensuke Nagai after 14 minutes and late headers from Maya Yoshida and Yuki Otsu.

Brazil, chasing their first ever Olympic soccer gold, fell behind to Honduras when Mario Martinez scored with a stunning volley after 11 minutes, but Honduras were

euphoric face of Jessica Ennis beamed out from news-stands across Britain on Sunday as Games fever swept a proud host nation basking in its greatest Olympic day in more than a century.

LONDON - Britain’s Victoria Pendleton broke arch rival Anna Meares’s 200-metre flying lap world record to qualify fastest for the 1/16 finals

of the Olympic women’s track cycling sprint on Sunday.

Pendleton, the world and Olympic cham-pion, clocked 10.724 seconds to beat the previous best mark set by Australian Meares by 0.058 seconds. Meares was second, clock-ing 10.805 seconds.

The qualifying lap is used to seed the riders, who will race in the 1/16 round later on Sunday.

Villagers say they’ll kill the elephants if authorities don’t protect their farms.

whale shark has died after it was stranded at a beach on Indonesia’s main island of Java.

(kmb27)

(BTN/BP)

(kmb30)

Orphan kids that joined soul surf project Bali’s program joined a special surflesson by none other than Bethany Hamilton.

(kmb27)

“The absorption of local products by tourism sector is still minimal, only reaching 10 percent. It happens because the quality of local craft

products has not yet complied with the expected standard, so that industry is unable to absorb the total produc-tion output,” said Chairman of the

Badung Chamber of Commerce and Industry, AA Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, in Denpasar. He said the Badung Government Tourism Office required hoteliers to purchase local handicraft products up to 60 percent. Such policy had been set forth in the regional regulation (Perda) on tourism to help grow the creative economy.

“We will try to increase the ab-sorbability of local products. But, as employers we will also absorb a quality product so that tourists will

not complain about the products pur-chased,” he said.

According to him, the Badung Chamber of Commerce and Industry would also help craftsmen in the mat-ter of capital so they could improve the quality of their products. “We will attempt to support the development of small craftsmen. Our party has lobbied and asked the support from the banking institution, both national and local banks,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the

Indonesia Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) of Badung, IGN Rai Surya Wijaya, also admitted that hotel industry still absorbed a small amount of local products. However, his party claimed if hoteliers had long helped the local craftsmen.

“Although the absorption is still a few, we have long committed to helping local craftsmen in market-ing their products by providing ex-hibition booth in hotels,” he said.

DENPASAR - Bali tourism is visited by 1,426,071 tourists, an increase of 9.39 percent during January-June 2012 but it has not necessarily absorbed the products of local craftsmen.
