GONG kebyar gamelan music born in Buleleng is not merely a medium of art. Gong kebyar hashistorical value because it is inseparable from the historical passage of our nation. To that end,Buleleng Government is asked to pay attention to the life and development of gong kebyar troupesin Buleleng. If the gong kebyar is ignored, Buleleng and the national history will turn incomplete.

Then, in 1982appeared the names like GedeUtama from Sarimekar Village,Wayan Pasek Suasana fromKarangasem, I Made PascaWirsutha from Paketan Hamlet andI Putu Tegeh Kertiasa from Paketan, too. A total of 12 artists mentionedabove are gamelan artists ofBuleleng whose names were in-separable from the triumph of gongkebyar gamelan music in NorthernBali until now. They were givenawards and certificates by EkaWakya gamelan troupe when com-memorating its triumph on Sunday(Aug 21) night.

Representative of Cudamani ArtStudio, Ubud, Gianyar, CokordaRaka Swastika, who attended the

awards presentation stated thatgong kebyar of Eka Wakya gamelantroupe was one that always accom-panied the presence of Bung Karnoto Bali in the pastime. The presenceof gamelan troupe had become awitness of the struggle of BungKarno in preserving the art and cul-ture of the archipelago.

To that end, Cok Kertiyasa re-minded the Buleleng Governmentto give serious attention to the ex-istence of kebyar gong. Moreover,Buleleng was actually a forerunnerto the birth of gong kebyar. “Guestscoming to Bali are looking for thearts and culture, instead of lookingfor another. For that purpose,Buleleng Government should payattention to the art troupes growingand developing in the society,” heappealed. (ole)

It is not onlyan opportunity to showcase theracing buffalo, but it also evolvesinto a prestige among the regionof West and East Ijo Gading. Themost prestigious regular annualevent today is the Regent Cup.Earlier, in a year there were morethan two competitions and themost prestigious was the GovernorCup. However, since 2009, theevent held since the administrationof Governor IB Mantra was abol-ished by the province. As a matterof fact, it was the prestige of thetournament sought by the ownersof buffalo races. Despite compet-ing for grand prize, in truth it isnot comparable to the cost of car-ing and training their buffaloes. The passion for racing at the race-course and prestige of the area aremore important than the prize.

Based on information of theJembrana Education, Cultural andTourism Agency, makepung isonce included in the 12 rare arts inthe effort to the inventory and de-velopment of native art and cultureto Jembrana. This inventory men-tions the buffalo race attraction isestimated to have started around1920s. Unfortunately, it does notmention where this attraction firstappeared.

Since then, the buffalo race hasdeveloped from generation to gen-eration in Jembrana society hav-ing nearly 90 units of subak orga-nization. The buffaloes used to pulla cart in transporting rice were veryfamiliar and easily found among

The Mekepung which could become tourism attraction in Jembrana Regency

Makepung, buffalo race à la Jembranathe local peasants at that time. Asconsequence, the population ofbuffaloes in Jembrana was in largenumber.

Allegedly, the buffalo race hasgrown along with the Jegog art atancient villages in Jembrana thathave adequately extensive ricefield area such as Sangkar Agung,Dauh Waru, Sebual, Mendoyo,Lateng, Kaliakah and Baluk. For-merly, territory of these villageswas dominated by rice field andhad a very good irrigation. At somevillages, it was very easy to en-counter Jineng (rice granary withseating place on lower part), buf-faloes and buffalo-drawn carts.

Those buffaloes and carts wereused for the conveyance of agri-cultural products either rice orcrops as the rice fields were quitewide. Rich farmers definitely had2-5 hectares of farmland andwould have buffaloes for transpor-tation. They were transportingtheir rice hand in hand from thefields to rice barn. Some of themwere racing each other to make itfaster and the yields could be im-mediately transported out. This tra-dition then kindled the birth ofbuffalo race or makepung.

Nevertheless, there are severalother stories mentioning about theembryo of buffalo race. One ofthem is the process of cultivatingthe farmers’ soil from plowing un-til leveling where farmers did itthrough mutual assistance withsome buffaloes. On the sidelinesof the works, farmers raced oneother. However, such buffalo racewas simpler and unlike the onescontested today. At that time, thejockey only rode the plow without

a cart and wheels. Buffalo race wasonly carried out in the area of wetrice fields. Therefore, it was com-monly called makepung betenan ormakepung lampit that literallymeans race in wetland or race bymeans of harrow drawn by buffa-loes. This tradition remains surviveat number of subak organizationssuch as at Peh Hamlet of KaliakahVillage, Negara and Manistutu.

Group Head of West Jogading,Made Mara, not long ago said thatbuffalo race was now packagedinto a tourist attraction. The con-ditions were then adjusted, fromlarge cart to smaller and lean sizefor a single jockey. In Jembrana, the buffalo race was held annuallyin July to November. The mostprestigious event was the RegentCup initiated since IB Ardanaserved as the Regent of Jembrana.Meanwhile, Governor Cuplaunched during the reign of Gov-ernor Prof. IB Mantra had nolonger been held since 2009.

An event is divided into twogroups, namely East Ijo Gadingand West Ijo Gading. Ijo Gadingitself is the name of a great riverdividing the city of Negara. Eastand West show the origin of thegroup, where the West represents thearea of west of the river (Melaya)and the East represent the area lo-cated in the east of the river(Mendoyo, Pekutatan andJembrana). Each annual event in-volves some 500 pairs of buffalo. InJembrana itself there are five loca-tions of buffalo race circuit namelyKaliakah Village Circuit, Awen Vil-lage Circuit, Mertasari Village Cir-cuit, Delod Berawah Village Circuitand Tuwed Village Circuit. Temple CeremonyCalendar Event for August 7 through August 30, 2011

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date forit annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 daysaccording to Balinese calendar, including the smallerancestral shrine which each family possesses. Becauseof this practically every few days a ceremony of festi-val of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebratedthe same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan,Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day,Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place onthe same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. Whennew moon is used then the celebration always happens onnew moon or full moon. The day of course can differ thereligious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full daywith some temple celebrating for three days while the cel-ebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is neverless than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressedwith pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimespainted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifullyarranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. Infront of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellasdepending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides theseumbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributesof Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”,long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments ofyoung coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits andcolored cakes, to the Temple. Irene, the ninth named stormof the busy 2011 Atlantic season, looks set to be the first hurricaneto hit the United States since Ikesavaged the Texas coast in 2008.

It could also be the catalyst thatthe insurance industry has beenseeking in its quest for across-the-board premium increases, in whatalready promises to be the costli-est year in history for natural di-sasters around the globe.

Authorities along the U.S. At-lantic seaboard, from Miami toNew York, were closely watch-ing Irene’s possible path, with at

President Barack Obama wasbriefed about Irene while on va-cation on the Massachusetts is-land of Martha’s Vineyard, WhiteHouse officials said.

At 11 p.m. EDT (0300 GMT)Irene had top winds of 100 milesper hour (160 km per hour) andwas 100 miles east of PuertoPlata, Dominican Republic.

Irene was expected tostrengthen further into a Cat-egory 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensityscale, with winds over 111 mph, before hitting the southeast U.S.coast by the weekend, the Mi-ami-based hurricane center said.

The storm was off the north-ern coast of the Dominican Re-

public on Monday night and wasmoving west-northwest . I tseemed to have spared the eco-nomically important tourist areaof Punta Cana as it passed by ear-lier in the day.

“It was a non-event ... It waskind of just of rainy day, it couldhave been a lot worse,” MikeBryant, who runs a small adven-ture tourism company at PuntaCana, told Reuters.

Earlier, Irene buffeted PuertoRico with winds and heavy rain, knocking out power and down-ing trees.

Irene was just north ofHispaniola, the island shared bythe Dominican Republic andHaiti, and was on a track thatwould take it over the Turks andCaicos Islands and southeasternBahamas on Tuesday and thecentral Bahamas by Wednesday.

Asked if his father, who hasnot been seen in public forweeks, was safe and well in Tri-poli, Saif said: “Of course.”

Saif’s reappearance mysti-fied rebels.

“We’re trying to figure outhow he escaped,” said onerebel, Muftah Ahmad Uthman.“You know the capital was cap-tured really quickly. Many ofthe men in uniform are volun-teers, and some of them makemistakes.”

World leaders urgedGaddafi, 69, to surrender toprevent more bloodshed andappealed for an orderly transi-tion of power, as the six-month-old battle for control of the oil-producing North African nationappeared to enter i ts f inalstages.

Rebels swept into Tripolitwo days ago in tandem with anuprising within the ci ty.Reuters reporters saw firefightsand clashes with heavy weap-ons, including anti-aircraftguns, as rebels tried to flush outsnipers and pockets of resis-tance.

Hundreds seem to have beenkilled or wounded since Satur-day. But Gaddafi tanks andsharpshooters appeared to holdonly small areas, mainlyaround the Bab al-Aziziyahcompound.

Civilians, who had mobbedthe streets on Sunday to cheerthe end of dictatorship, stayedindoors as machinegun fire andexplosions punctuated some ofthe heaviest fighting of theArab Spring uprisings that havebeen reshaping the MiddleEast.

U.S. President BarackObama, saying the conflict wasnot over yet, cautioned rebelsagainst exacting revenge forGaddafi’s brutal rule. “Truejustice will not come from re-prisals and violence,” he said.

The president also madeplain that the United Stateswould oppose any group withinthe loose coalition of rebelsfrom imposing its power overother parts of Libyan society.

In a sign Gaddafi allies werestill determined to fight, NATOsaid government forces firedthree Scud-type missiles fromthe area of Sirte toward therebel-held city of Misrata.

Bab al-Aziziya, a huge com-plex where some believeGaddafi might be hiding, wasthe focal point of fighting inTripoli.

“I don’t imagine the Bab al-Aziziya compound will fall eas-ily and I imagine there will bea fierce fight,” Abdel HafizGhoga, spokesman for the rebelNational Transitional Council, said in an interview aired by Al-Jazeera.

Fears of reprisalWestern powers are con-

cerned that tribal, ethnic andpolitical divisions among thediverse armed groups opposedto Gaddafi could lead to thekind of blood-letting seen inIraq after the overthrow ofSaddam Hussein.

In a move that could easetensions, a rebel official in theeastern city of Benghazi said, however, that efforts were un-der way to make contact withauthorities hitherto loyal toGaddafi.

Foreign governments whichhad hesitated to take sides, among them Gaddafi’s Arabneighbors, Russia and Chinaalso made clear his four decadesof absolute power were over.

A U.S. State Departmentspokeswoman said Libyanswho said they representedGaddafi were making “moredesperate” efforts to negotiatewith the United States in the last24 to 48 hours.

Washington did not take anyof them seriously because theydid not indicate Gaddafi’s will-ingness to step down, sheadded.

French President NicolasSarkozy, who took an earlygamble on the rebels and maynow reap diplomatic benefits, called on the Gaddafi loyalists“to turn their back on the crimi-nal and cynical blindness oftheir leader by immediatelyceasing fire.”

Late on Monday, Sarkozyspoke to Britain’s DavidCameron by telephone aboutLibya, and they agreed to “pur-sue efforts in supporting the le-gitimate Libyan authorities aslong as Colonel Gaddafi refusesto surrender arms,” a Frenchstatement read. Paris has offeredto host a summit on Libya soon.

Malaysia saw a drop to 22 percentfrom 31 percent over the same pe-riod.

In contrast, informal workersmade up 12 percent of the workforcein developing Europe in 2008, and33 percent in Latin America and theCaribbean region.

ADB said informal work is usu-ally a sign of underemployment andlower incomes as well as the absenceof social safety nets.

The bank urged low-incomeAsian countries to make it easier forworkers to move from rural to urbanareas in search of higher-paying jobs,as well as support activities to in-crease productivity in the rural non-farm sector.

It also recommended extendingbasic levels of social protection toinformal workers.

WITH a little training, yourdog could have a promising futureas a biochemist. A new study in theEuropean Respitory Journal showsthat dogs are better at sniffing outthe early markers of lung cancerthan the latest medical technolo-gies at our disposal. Lung canceris the second most frequent formof cancer in men and womenacross the United States and Eu-rope, accounting for approxi-mately 500,000 deaths per year.

Part of the reason for the highmortality rate is that lung cancer isnotoriously difficult to identify early. In many cases, the patient doesn’tshow any symptoms and detectionof the diseases happens by chance. If someone isn’t that lucky, the can-cer is likely to have already pro-gressed by the time it is found.

The study investigatedwhether dogs could be trained toreliably identify specific volatileorganic compounds (VOCs) thatare linked to the presence of lungcancer. cially from the residuals of to-bacco smoke, and the results cantake a long time to process.

Trained dogs were asked to sniffout a study group that included lungcancer patients, chronic obstructivepulmonary disease (COPD) pa-tients, and healthy volunteers. Thedogs successfully identified 71samples of lung cancer out of a pos-sible 100. They also correctly de-tected 372 samples that did not havelung cancer out of a possible 400— a 93% success rate.

As impressive, the dogs wereable to detect lung cancer mark-ers independently from COPD andtobacco smoke – showing thatFido, unlike our latest technolo-gies, can separate out lung cancermarkers from the most confound-ing variables.

The major takeaways from thisstudy are twofold. First, thanks tothe pooches, we now know for surethat there is an independent, stablemarker for lung cancer, which in andof itself is a big step forward. Sec-ond, until our medical tech can getup to speed with a wet nose, dogscan add yet another remarkable abil-ity to their resumes.

Force India has better car says MallyaForce India may be unlikely to repeat its starring

Belgian Grand Prix pole position performance at Spathis weekend, but team principal Vijay Mallya hasno doubts the outfit has a much stronger car on itshands right now. Giancarlo Fisichella caused a ma-jor upset in 2009 when he delivered pole position andbattled Kimi Raikkonen for victory, at a time whenForce India’s car was optimised for low-drag circuits.

The drivers are pushing each other hard and are extremelymotivated. The car is delivering good performance and weare taking the fight to the big teams. It was hard to imaginewe would be in this position after our slow start to the year, but I never stopped believing. When you consider how com-petitive Formula 1 is, everyone in the team can be proud ofwhere we are.

“We’re well aware there is much hard work ahead to main-tain this and we still have a big task facing us in the construc-tors’ championship. But following the August break we comeback refreshed and ready to deliver again this weekend.” ForceIndia is just nine points behind Sauber in the constructors’championship, and Adrian Sutil believes its recent step for-ward in form can help it close the gap further.

“I think we can have another competitive weekend becausethe last couple of races have shown what we are capable of. Weseem to have a car that is working well everywhere and ourqualifying and race pace has been strong. We just need to keepup the momentum and keep picking up the points,” he said.

Paul di Resta added: “Spa is a track that has historicallybeen strong for us. And our recent form gives us every reasonto believe we can carry on where we left off in Hungary. Weknow our competitors won’t have stood still, but we’re stillpushing hard with development and determined to get as muchperformance from the car before the focus shifts to next year.”
