The two-hour teen celebration, broadcast live Sunday night, kicked off with a victory lap for the weekend box-office hit “Straight Outta Compton.” Ice Cube and the young stars of the N.W.A biopic, which earned an estimated $56.1 million over the weekend, welcomed the young crowd to Los Angeles’ Galen Center.

Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges, the rapper and “Furious 7” co-star, was one of three hosts, alongside “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez and actor Josh Peck. Bridges’ film, one of year’s biggest big-screen hits, was one of the night’s top winners, winning best action movie and best actor in an action-adventure for the late Paul Walker.

“Paul Walker is here in spirit with us,” said Vin Diesel, a star in the street racing franchise. He applauded a “special, spe-cial” teen in the crowd: Walker’s daughter Meadow.

The Teen Choice Awards spread awards across movies, music, TV, fash-ion, sports and digital media, celebrating the favorites — from Channing Tatum to Wiz Khalifa to Stephen Curry (all win-ners Sunday) — of one of media’s most powerful demographics.

As a pop star, Spears was a regular at the Teen Choice Awards, collecting its trademark trophies — surfboards — many times over the years, including its version of a lifetime achievement award in 2009.

On Sunday, Spears, her blonde hair partially dyed blue and purple, was hon-ored for being a style icon. She dedicated the award to her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and niece Lexie, who were in the audience.

The Teen Choice Awards’ new reign-ing powerhouse, One Direction, landed eight awards, bringing their “lifetime” total to 23. The British boy band, cur-

rently on tour, accepted the awards in a taped video.

The hip-hop drama “Empire” won breakout TV show and provided one of the show’s most memorable moments. While Jussie Smollett and Yazz performed “You’re So Beautiful,” a song from the series, the show’s Gabourey Sidibe made a surprise cameo, exuberantly dancing among the back-up dancers.

Ellen DeGeneres won for best come-dian. Adding a Teen Choice Award to her People’s Choice Award, DeGeneres requested awards from other age groups: the elderly and babies.

Several awards went to “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1,” including best actor in a sci-fi or fantasy for Josh Hutcherson. He reflected on the end of the franchise, with this fall’s “Mockingjay, Part 2,” like a coming graduation.

“’Hunger Games’ has been a huge part of my life for almost five years now. It’s coming to an end and it’s really sad,” said Hutcherson. “So if we want to cry together, we can do that because it breaks my heart.” (ap)

Searchers spot wreckage of Indonesian plane in rugged Papua

JAYAPURA — A search plane has spotted the wreckage of an Indonesian passenger plane that went missing with 54 people on board, smoke still billowing from it in a rugged area in eastern Papua province, rescue officials said Monday.

ANAHEIM, California — Animals will walk upright, oceans will part, a forgetful fish will remember her family and toys will fall in love in Disney and Pixar Animation’s upcoming films.

The studio previewed its animation slate Fri-day at the fan convention D23 Expo, with special appearances from voice actors including Ellen DeGeneres and Dwayne Johnson.

John Lasseter, the chief creative officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, hosted the presentation, where he announced a Jack and the Beanstalk adaptation, “Gigantic,” and the title of their Dia de los Muertos film, “Coco.” It was also revealed that Shakira would be provid-ing an original song and voicing a character in “Zootopia.”

“Gigantic” director Nathan Greno said his film would be the definitive version of the fairy tale — with a few spins, including a 60-foot tall, 11-year-old girl who Jack meets when he climbs up the beanstalk. “Frozen” songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who penned the hit “Let It Go,” will be writing the songs.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was there to preview the South Pacific-set “Moana,” out next year, which follows a high spirited, 16-year-old princess who 2,000 years ago sails to a fabled island with the tattooed demi-god Maui (John-son).

Directors Ron Clements and John Musker and Johnson spoke about their extensive talks with anthropologists and archaeologists to ensure they accurately represented the area and how important the ocean is to local culture.

Opetaia Foa’i, Grammy-winner Mark Manci-na, and Tony-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda will be handling “Moana’s” music.

Johnson said it has been his dream to be in an animated Disney movie.

“It is my heritage, it is my culture. I am proudly half-Samoan and half-black,” he said. “I’m so deeply connected to this movie.”

“Coco,” from director Lee Unkrich (“Toy Story 3”), will be about a 12-year-old boy living with his big family in Mexico who inadvertently sets off a life-altering chain of events.

Pixar also released information about “Toy Story 4” and “Finding Dory,” a sequel to the 2003 film “Finding Nemo” in which the forget-ful Dory (DeGeneres) endeavors to track down her family. (ap)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, deco-rations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrel-las soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JAKArTA - An Indonesian passenger plane that crashed with 54 people on board in Papua province was carrying cash worth around $470,000 for remote villages, a post office spokesman said on Monday as rescue teams headed to the mountainous site where it went down.

The Trigana Air Service ATR 42-300 plane crashed on Sunday, the latest in a string of aviation disasters in the sprawling Southeast Asian archipelago.

Earlier, a search and rescue plane spotted debris believed to be from the aircraft in the heavily forested Bintang Mountains district, local police chief Yunus Wally told the Antara news agency, adding that a search team was approaching the area.

There were 44 adult passengers, five children and infants and five crew on the Trigana short-haul flight from Sentani Airport in Jayapura, capital of Papua, south to Oksibil.

All those on the plane were Indonesian nationals, a National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) official said.

Airline officials were not immediately available to respond to questions from Reuters.

There was no suggestion that the large sum of money being transported on the plane was linked to its crash.

“There were four people carrying the money, 6.5 billion rupiah ($471,500),” PT Pos spokesman Abu Sofjan said, adding that it was part of an official as-sistance programme for the poor and was intended to be distributed to villagers.

He said poor infrastructure in Indonesia’s eastern-most province meant that assistance money was often flown in by air.

A Super Puma helicopter crashed in the same area last year, said Sito, a BASARNAS communications operator in Jayapura who goes by one name. “It’s the weather there, it changes all the time. In the morning it can be clear and hot and then suddenly it rains,” Sito said.

The crashed ATR 42-300 made its first flight 27 years ago, according to the Aviation Safety Network. Trigana Air Service has a fleet of 14 aircraft, with an average age of 26.6 years, according to the airfleets.com database.

Trigana has been on the European Union’s list of banned carriers since 2007 due to safety or regulatory concerns. It has had 14 serious incidents since it began operations in 1991, according to the online database Aviation Safety Network.

Excluding the latest crash, it has written off 10 aircraft.

Indonesia has a patchy aviation safety record and has seen two major plane crashes in the past year, in-cluding an AirAsia flight that went down in the Java Sea, killing all 162 on board.

Indonesia’s president promised a review of the age-ing air force fleet in July after a military transport plane crashed, killing more than 100 people. (rtr)

Search planes went into the air early Monday after residents of a village not far from Oksibil told local police that they saw a plane flying low before crashing into a mountain, said Ludi-yanto, who heads the search and rescue operation from Jayapura. Ludiyanto, like many Indonesians, goes by one name.

The airline’s crisis center official in Jayapura’s Sentani airport, Budiono, said all the passengers are Indonesians and there were nine names on the initial passenger manifest were eventually replaced by other persons — a common practice among small domesstic airlines in the country.

Budiono also said that among the

passengers were five local government officials and members of the local par-liament who were to attend a ceremony Monday in Oksibil marking the 70th an-niversary of Indonesia’s independence from Dutch colonial rule. The event is a major holiday across the country, with many ceremonies and carnivals.

Oksibil, which is 280 kilometers (175 miles) south of Jayapura, was experiencing heavy rain, strong winds and fog when the plane lost contact with the airport minutes before it was scheduled to land.

Much of Papua is covered with im-penetrable jungles and mountains. Some planes that have crashed in the past have never been found.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said in a statement ahead of Indonesia’s 70th independence anniversary ceremo-ny that he was calling “for a moment of silence and pray for the crew and passengers ahead of our independence anniversary.”

European plane maker ATR said in a statement late Sunday that it “acknowl-edges the reported loss of contact” with the Trigana flight “and is standing by to support the relevant aviation authori-ties.” ATR, based in Toulouse, France, makes regional planes with 90 seats or less.

Indonesia has had a string of airline tragedies in recent years. Last Decem-ber, all 162 people aboard an AirAsia

jet were killed when the plane plummeted into the Java Sea as it flew through stormy weather on its way from Surabaya, Indo-nesia’s second-largest city, to Singapore.

The sprawl-ing archipelago nation of 250 mi l l ion peo-ple and some 17,000 islands is one of Asia’s most rapidly ex-panding airline markets, but it is struggling to provide enough qualified pilots, mechanics, air traffic control-lers and updated airport technol-ogy to ensure safety.

From 2007 to 2009, the Eu-ropean Union bar red Indo-nesian airlines from flying to Europe because of safety con-cerns.

Trigana Air Service, which commenced op-erations in 1991, had 22 aircraft as of December 2013 and flies to 21 destinations in Indonesia. (ap)

During its run before the Sun the probe collected particles and gas put off by the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko as it delivered a solar heat-driven fireworks show of gas jets and shed about a tonne of dust per second.

The samples as well as im-ages Rosetta took of the comet as it came within 186 million kilometres (116 million miles) of the Sun at about 0200 GMT will be analysed in the coming weeks and months, the European Space Agency said.

“It’s really a fantastic mile-stone that has been achieved by

Rosetta today,” Nicola Altobelli, acting Rosetta Project scientist, said during a online presentation marking the occasion.

“Beyond the obvious scientific achievement, it was also tech-nically a masterpiece in space engineering,” he added.

However, project scientists said the washing machine-sized lander Philae -- sent to 67P’s surface last November -- remains incommunicado, with some of its equipment not working properly any longer.

Experts, however, sounded a hopeful note that the lander could wake up again and transmit

scientific data as well as images from the surface of the comet to Rosetta.

Pictures taken from Rosetta’s navigation camera showed that 67P was “very active” as its sur-face was buffeted by solar wind and heat, said Sylvian Lodiot, the engineer in charge of the space-craft at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre in Germany.

“There are jets of gas and dust just about everywhere,” he told AFP.

Rosetta, which continues to shadow the comet on its 6.5 year orbit around the Sun, “is working perfectly,” he added.

MIAMI - Astronomers have discovered a planet 100 light years away that looks a lot like Jupiter once did and may offer new in-sights on how planets are formed, researchers said Thursday.

Known as 51 Eridani b, it is the first exoplanet detected by a new instrument called the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), according to the re-port in the journal Science.

It is “the first young planet

that probably looks like Jupiter did billions of years ago, making it currently our most important corner-piece of the planet forma-tion jigsaw puzzle,” said Travis Barman, an associate professor of planetary sciences at the University of Arizona.

The star it circles, 51 Eridani, is just 20 million years old -- fairly young considering the Sun is about 4.5 billion years old.

Enshrouded in methane, the planet is about twice the mass of Jupiter -- the largest planet in our solar system -- and contains the strongest methane signature ever detected in the atmosphere of an alien planet.

Its temperature is estimated to be about 800 degrees Fahrenheit (427 Celsius), hot enough to melt lead.

“This is exactly the kind of planet we envisioned discovering

when we designed GPI,” said James Graham, a University of California, Berkeley professor of astronomy and the GPI project scientist.

“We wanted to find planets when they’re young so we can figure out the formation process.”

The Gemini Planet Imager was designed to discover faint, young planets orbiting bright stars.

The instrument is about the size of a small car and is mounted on the

eight-meter (yard) Gemini South telescope in Chile. It began operat-ing in December 2014.

A separate NASA mission known as the Kepler space telescope searches for planets by studying the dim in starlight that can be glimpsed when a planet passes in front of a star.

Kepler’s main goal is to find Earth-like planets that might be able to support life. (afp)

This series of images, provided by the European Space Agency ESA of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko , was captured by Rosetta’s OSIRIS narrow-angle camera on Aug 12, 2015, just a few hours before the comet reached the closest point to the Sun along its 6.5-year orbit, or perihelion.

Astronomers discover ‘young Jupiter’

Rosetta hits ‘milestone’ in comet’s run past Sun

PARIS - The European space probe Rosetta captured a range of scientific data Thursday as it trailed an ancient comet past the Sun which could help scientists better understand the origins of life on Earth.

During the 67P’s solar swing-by, Rosetta retreated to a safe distance of 330 kilometres (200 miles) to protect its star tracker navigation system from the de-bris.

The comet is made up of min-erals, ice and -- most critically for scientists -- organic molecules that may have been similar to the precursors that kick-started life in Earth’s early oceans.

Scientists hope the heat of perihelion -- when the comet comes closest to the Sun in its orbit -- will have caused the life-less voyager to shed a significant layer of its icy crust.

If so, it will disgorge some of these pristine particles left from the solar system’s birth about 4.6 billion years ago.

Yet it is not clear if the lander Philae will help unravel the mystery.

“We have not heard from Philae in more than a month and that is quite worrying,” Barbara Cozzoni, a lander engineer, said during the online presentation.

She noted one of the reasons Philae may have been out of con-tact so long is that its transmis-sion equipment has been steadily degrading.

One transmitter is out of com-mission and two receivers are not working properly.

The lander, which runs on so-lar power, has the energy it needs to operate through October, but after that days will start getting shorter and the robot lab could run short of power. (afp)

During the competition, each participant is supposed to collect garbage that has been strewn on the Kuta Beach and deposit it on the the cart. This generates awareness among the locals and foreigners about the need for gar-bage disposal and maintaining cleanliness.

Australian tourist John Alf said the independence day celebrations in Bali included various other com-petitions, which were fascinating.

“I joined the cart competition because I was inter-ested in pulling the cart and picking up some garbage. It was a fun and amazing experience,” John said.

Even though he felt tired, John still celebrated the Indonesian Independence Day with spirit, including partaking in the many other entertainments organized for the locals and foreign tourists in Bali during the day.

“Though I did not win in any competition, I am proud that I was able to entertain the Balinese people. I do plan to follow the competitions next year,” John added.

Additionally, the Secretary of the Garden and Clean-ness Office of Badung District, Anak Agung Gede Ta-man, said the celebration was aimed at boosting people’s awareness about the need for maintaining cleanliness and discouraging the practice of littering. (ant)

DENPASAR - Nearly 200 Indians and persons of Indian origin along with friends of India celebrated In-dia’s 69th Independence Day with traditional gaiety and fervour in an elegant ceremony at the Indian Con-sulate in Bali.

Several members of the Balinese community, including the representa-tives of Bali Regional Police as well as Balinese Kabaddi team comprising both players from the women’s and men’s team and students of Hindi & Indian dances, attended the event.

The Indian Consul General, A.S. Takhi, hoisted the Indian tri-colour flag at the premises of the Consulate in Renon. The Indian community and friends of India together sang the national anthem of India, Jana Gana Mana, written by noble laureate and noted poet Rabindranath Tagore, who had visited Bali during 1927.

The teachers and students from GMIS, Bali sang a patriotic song ‘Sare Jahan Se Accha’ written by poet Mohammad Allama Iqbal.

Consul General read out the Ad-dress of the President of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, delivered on the eve of the Independence Day. Congratulating the Indians, the Presi-dent highlighted that ‘institutions of

democracy need constant care for preservation’. He stated that the ‘eco-nomic reforms is a work-in-progress’ and India has already recovered to ‘7.3% growth in 2014-15’; however the ‘benefits of growth must reach the poorest of the poors’ and that the ‘policies must be geared to meet the zero hunger’ challenge. He also called upon the nation to maintain the guru-shishya parampara (teacher-student relationship), which calls for care, de-votion and commitment in nurturing the younger generation. The President stressed that the Indian “democracy is creative because it is plural, but diversity must be nourished with tol-erance and patience”. He advised that ‘our neighbours must ensure that their territory is not used by forces inimical to India. He stated that while ‘the rule of law is sacrosanct’, society is also protected by humanity and quoted Mahatma Gandhi, who said: ‘You must not lose faith in humanity.’

Recognizing the shared destiny, the President stressed that ‘peace, friendship and cooperation bind nations and peoples together’ and connectivity must be strengthened, institutional capacity expanded and mutual trust enhanced for greater regional cooperation and promoting

Meanwhile, prosecutors have been tasked with investigating pos-sible dereliction of duties and abuse of power that may have contributed to Wednesday night’s blasts.

“We must thoroughly investigate (the incident) and hold accountable all those responsible,” said Premier Li Keqiang, as quoted by state me-dia. “We must give an answer for families of the victims, an answer for all residents of Tianjin, an an-swer for all Chinese people, and an answer for history.”

Upset at government negligence, about 100 people whose residences were damaged in the explosions gathered Monday for a protest to demand compensation from the government.

Wednesday’s blasts originated at a warehouse for hazardous material, where 700 tons of sodium cyanide — a toxic chemical that can form combustible substances on contact with water — were being stored in amounts that violated safety rules. That has prompted contamina-tion fears and a major cleanup of a 3-kilometer (1.8-mile) -radius, cordoned-off area in this Chinese port city southeast of Beijing.

Chinese work safety rules require such facilities to be at least 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) away from residences, public buildings and highways. But online map searches show the Ruihai International Lo-gistics warehouse was within 500 meters of both an expressway and

a 100,000-square-meter (1-million-square-foot) apartment complex. Those apartments had walls singed and windows shattered, and all the residents have been evacuated.

“We victims demand: Govern-ment, buy back our houses,” said a banner carried by the residents at a protest outside the Tianjin hotel where officials have held daily news conferences about the disaster. “Kids are asking: How can we grow up healthy?” read another banner.

Tianjin officials have been hard-pressed to answer how the warehouse was allowed to operate in its location. Questions also have been raised about management of the warehouse, and the country’s top prosecuting office announced Sunday that it was setting up a team to investigate possible of-fenses related to the massive blasts, including dereliction of duty and abuse of power. Ruihai’s general manager is in hospital under police watch.

Bian Jiang, a resident of one of the nearby housing complexes, said he was asleep when the first explosion struck Wednesday shortly before midnight.

“Twenty seconds later I heard the second explosion and saw the rising mushroom cloud. Then, I was thrown out of bed by the force of the blast. I was wondering if we would able to get out alive,” he said, adding that his home is now ruined.

“All the windows are gone.”The blasts claimed the lives of at

least 114 people, with 70 still miss-ing, including 64 firefighters and six policemen, Tianjin government spokesman Gong Jiansheng told a news conference Monday.

On Monday, He Shushan, a deputy mayor, confirmed there were 700 tons of the toxic chemi-cal sodium cyanide on the site at the time of the blasts, although the authorities said there have not been any substantial leaks. Authorities

also said they had sealed all water-ways leading into the sea from the blast site and built retention walls to prevent any runoff.

Sodium cyanide is a toxic chemi-cal that can form a flammable gas upon contact with water, and sev-eral hundred tons would be a clear violation of rules cited by state me-dia that the warehouse could store no more than 10 tons at a time.

The ministry’s directive ordered government authorities at all levels to check whether companies within

their jurisdiction that produce and store hazardous materials comply with safety regulations, especially if they keep a safe distance from residential areas and do not exceed storage limits.

The death toll includes at least 21 firefighters — making the disaster the deadliest for Chinese firefight-ers in more than six decades — and their toll could go much higher because 64 remain missing. About 1,000 firefighters responded to the disaster. (ap)

MOSCOW — The foreign min-isters of Russia and Iran said after talks in Moscow that their two countries have a united position on Syria, with both diplomats warn-ing against any outside attempt to dictate a resolution to the Syrian civil war.

The nuclear deal reached last month between Iran and world powers has led to a series of dip-lomatic moves aimed at achiev-ing some sort of breakthrough in Syria.

Russian Foreign Minister

Sergey Lavrov met last week with members of the Syrian opposi-tion, while his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, was in Damascus to discuss ways of end-ing the war with Syrian President Bashar Assad.

“Our states hold a common posi-tion on regulating the Syrian crisis,” Zarif, speaking through a translator, said at a joint news conference with Lavrov. “The Syrians must them-selves decide their fate and their future, and foreign states should only make this easier.”

Moscow and Tehran have both supported Assad in the conflict, which has left more than 250,000 people dead since it began in 2011.

The nuclear deal, which lifts sanctions against Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program, also has raised expectation in Rus-sia for expanded trade with Iran, including in nuclear energy and defense. Zarif and Lavrov said they discussed the construction of new nuclear reactors and other projects. (ap)

China orders nationwide safety check after Tianjin blasts

TIANJIN, China — Beijing on Monday ordered a nationwide check on workplace safety and to correct all irregularities five days after huge explosions at warehouse in the port city of Tianjin killed 114 people and left 70 people missing. The directive from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology lamented the frequency of fatal workplace incidents and demanded a thorough national inspection on all safety risks.

The blasts on last Wednes-day night originated at a warehouse for hazardous material, where 700 tons of sodium cyanide - a toxic chemical that can form combustible substances on contact with water - were being stored in amounts that violated safety rules. That has prompted contamination fears and a major cleanup of a 3-kilometer (1.8-mile) -radius, cordoned-off area in this Chinese port city southeast of Beijing.

GIANYAR - Various interesting pa-rades are held in Gianyar County to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Indonesia’s Independence Day such as the elderly parade in the kampong of tourist of Ubud, Saturday (Aug. 15). Hundreds of the elderly people forming a pair could draw the attention of thousands of travelers.

Based on monitoring from Saturday morning around 08:30 a.m., hundreds of the elderly people have made up as seen to gather in the Astina Square, Ubud. At nine o’clock, they began moving with the ac-companiment of marching band of kinder-garten in Ubud. Baleganjur gamelan music and barong attractions were also played for the first time in such an event.

One of the participants of the elderly parade, Ketut Sujana, 62, is very enthusi-astic to be involved in such an art parade. Although he was already old enough, he claimed not to be outdone by young gen-erations. Similarly, he was grateful because village government provides a space for people of his age to be creative. “I am old but still young at heart,” he said.

In the meantime, the subdistrict head of Ubud, Ida Bagus Suamba, said that this

event involved 600 elderly people taking the route from Astina Square to Ubud Palace. “We give short route because we also consider the elderly that are unable to walk far. In addition to considering their condition, we also anticipate the potential of traffic congestion,” he said.

He added that the parade also serves as a kind of appreciation for the success of Ubud village being capable of achieving the first winner in the village competition for Bali provincial level in 2015. This triggers the tourism of Ubud to become more powerful.

First Assistant to Regional Secretary of Gianyar, Cokorda Rai Widiarsa, said that the success of Ubud in winning the village competition of Bali province in 2015 must become a moment to remain introspective in fixing all the problems faced by Ubud. “The matters of congestion and others must be immediately found out a solution, so that travelers can make a visit to Ubud comfortably. By all means, coordination with local government must be intensified in the arrangement of the area and overcoming the problems,” he said. (kmb35)

The pakelem ritual at two places is one of the rituals made by Hindu com-munity to maintain natural balance of the macrocosm. In the typical ritual accompanied with Balinese gamelan music was attended by hundreds of employees of the Bali Post Media Group (KMB) and they looked to worship very solemnly despite being under the heat of the sun.

Before the implementation of the pakelem ritual by means of buffalo, goat, turtle, goose and chicken, it was preceded by saying prayers together at Batu Bolong Temple. It was presided with notification to local temple priest. After that, it was resumed with pakelem ritual in the afternoon as well as pecaruan or animal sacrifice namely the caru panca kelud alit by means of five male chickens and striped-necklace duck.

The pakelem ritual with bakti soroan bebangkit offerings was of-ficiated over by Ida Panditha Mpu Budha Alit Maharsi Parama Daksha from Griya Agung Budha Salahin, Tanggahan Tengah village, Demu-lih, Susut, Bangli. On the sidelines of the pakelem ritual officiated over by the young high priest, it was also accompanied by Rejang dance and

Sidakarya mask dance by Kayu Manis Art Studio, Canggu hamlet. The theme featured is Kyai Kama-reka Ngrajegang Jagat Tampuryang Batur. Three dancers of the studio making the pilgrims laugh are Jro Mangku Purya, Mrs. Intan and Made Sulendra. The dance is accompanied by gamelan troupe from Pipitan hamlet.

“This is what should be emulated. To sustain Bali is required to organize a pakelem ritual in order to achieve a balance. We invoke to deities, so that Bali becomes steady and the archipelago is steady as well,” said the Sidakarya mask dancer.

In the meantime, Mangku Alit, the assistant to Ida Pandhita Mpu Budha Maharsi Alit Parama Daksha, said that the meaning of this ritual is to sustain the universe, and the pakelem is intended for Ida Bhatara Dalem Segara, Dalem Kancing Gumi and Pancering Jagat. “The meaning of this ritual is just to sustain universe, do animal sacrifice and say prayers to deities Ida Bhatara Dalem Segara, Ida Bhatara Kancing Gumi and Ida Pancering Jagat,” said Jro Mangku Alit.

He also added that this ceremony is expected to help make Bali sus-

tainable. In other words, in this modernity, Bali remains to preserve its Balinese elements. So, in this pakelem there are some buffers like buffalo, turtle and swan. “Buffalo epitomizes wisdom, turtle epitomizes balance and swan epitomizes purity. This turtle is balancer of microcosm

and macrocosm,” said Mangku Alit.On that account, the pakelem

ritual is also dedicated to sang kala sunia. “It is mainly devoted to sang kala sunia,” he said while adding if the pakelem is classified into grandi-ose scale. With this pakelem ritual, Jro Mangku hoped that Bali will be

sustainable, the nation unites and Indonesia achieves prosperity.

“Hopefully, the universe is sus-tainable along with the entire com-munity. Besides, the macrocosm and microcosm can reach balance and prosperity,” pleased Jro Mangku Alit. (asa)

DENPASAR - To sustain Bali, it is required a balance between microcosm and macrocosm. Besides, this can also harmonize the uni-verse and its contents. Before the celebration of the 67th anniversary of Bali Post, a pakelem ritual in the ocean (segara kertih) and Lake Batur (danu kertih) was organized on Saturday (Aug. 15).

WASHINGTON — The In-ternational Monetary Fund de-livered a reassuring economic assessment of China on Friday, at the end of a week that saw the Chinese currency plummet and global stock markets buckle at the prospect of more bad news from the world’s second-biggest economy.

In its annual checkup of the Chinese economy, the IMF pre-dicted China’s economy would grow 6.8 percent this year and 6.3 percent in 2016, unchanged from previous forecasts. China last year registered 7.4 percent growth, already the slowest since 1990.

On Tuesday, China rattled global financial markets by de-valuing its currency, the yuan, by 1.9 percent, biggest one-day drop in a decade. Beijing said the yuan was overvalued and the de-valuation was meant to catch up to market forces, not counteract them. The IMF praised China for giving investors more say in its foreign-exchange rate.

But financial markets tumbled along with the yuan. Investors feared the devaluation meant that China’s economy was weaker than expected and that Chinese

authorities were desperately try-ing to jump-start growth. A lower yuan helps China’s exporters by making their products cheaper around the world.

In its report, though, the IMF sounded relatively upbeat about China’s economic prospects. It sees the country’s economic deceleration as part of a delib-erate plan to wean China from overdependence on exports and often-wasteful investment in real estate and factories, and toward slower but steadier growth built on consumer spending.

The fund expects investment growth to slow to 5.8 percent this year from 7.6 percent in 2014 and for consumer-spending growth to clock in at 7.1 percent this year, up from 6.9 percent in 2014.

Steve Barnett, the IMF’s divi-sion chief for China, Asia and the Pacific, told reporters that China’s “labor market is holding up well” despite the slowdown. That’s partly because the econo-my is shifting away from manu-facturing and toward services, which employ more people.

The IMF also predicted that a recent sell-off in Chinese stocks won’t damage China’s economy. (ap)

The dismal data reported Monday was expected, based on earlier reported figures, but it raises the likelihood the central bank may opt for fresh stimulus measures in coming months.

It also comes at an awkward time for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has championed a strategy of heavy monetary stimulus to help push prices higher and drive a “virtuous cycle” of stronger consumer spending and corporate investment. Abe has seen

his popularity ratings slip following damaging legislative skirmishes over his proposals to expand the role of Japan’s self-defense force and could use some positive news on the eco-nomic side.

But heavy rains in the spring and early summer are thought to have discouraged shoppers. Demand for autos has also slumped following a tax hike for smaller cars. As China’s economy has slowed, its demand for

exports has also lagged.Economy minister Akira Amari,

however, acknowledged inadequate progress toward getting companies to use their surging corporate profits to raise wages and domestic investment — a priority seen as vital to a sustain-able recovery.

“Improving private consumption is crucial,” he said.

Amari shot down speculation that Japan was planning further stimulus to spur growth. “We have no such intention,” he said.

The government did revise upward its estimate for growth in the January-March quarter, to 4.5 percent from 3.9

percent. The contraction in April-June represented a 0.4 percent quarterly decrease.

The Bank of Japan, whose lavish monetary easing is pumping trillions of yen (hundreds of billions of dollars) of cash into the economy through pur-chases of government bonds and other assets, has persisted in forecasting a rebound later in the year.

The data released Monday show that private consumption, the biggest driver of growth, fell 1.7 percent in annual terms despite an 8 percent increase in residential investment. Corporate investment slipped 0.3 percent.

Exports fell 16.5 percent from a year earlier, the worst quarterly performance in four years, with net exports minus imports down nearly 10 percent.

The economy got a boost from pub-lic investment, which rose almost 11 percent from a year earlier, as spending was “front-loaded” at the beginning of the fiscal year, which starts April 1.

Japanese companies reported an average increase in net profit of 42 percent in the April-June quarter from a year earlier. But corporations have generally opted to spend rising profits on investments overseas, rather than in Japan or on increasing wages. (ap)

BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel says there’s no cer-tainty the latest bailout for Greece will succeed but she is hopeful the country can overcome its economic crisis if it adheres to the agreements forged with its creditors.

Merkel also told German broad-

caster ZDF on Sunday that Greece can’t expect its debt to be cut.

The International Monetary Fund has insisted that Greece must be given some form of debt relief before it will participate in any new bailout, something Germany wants.

But Merkel said while repayment

periods may be extended and interest rates can be tweaked, a so-called debt “haircut” is ruled out.

Japan’s economy contracts in April-June quarter

TOKYO — Japan’s recovery stalled in the April-June quarter, with the world’s third-largest economy contracting at a 1.6 percent annual pace thanks to feeble consumer and corporate demand and slowing exports.

GIANYAR - The team of the Gi-anyar Industry and Trade Agency and the Health Agency monitored the circulation of food and bever-ages in Gianyar Market. The of-ficers mainly targeted a variety of snacks and beverages commonly consumed by children. Such ac-tivities were lately intensified to anticipate the circulation of foodstuff suspected of containing preservatives, coloring, sweetener, leavening agent and chewer that are harmful to health.

The Head of the Industry and Trade Agency, I Wayan Suamba, revealed that most of the food and drinks sold by traders in Gianyar Market actually have owned a license. However, his party does not want to miss and still takes samples for further study. “We continue to take samples so that the results can be sure,” he said. The samples are taken from the foods and beverages commonly consumed by children.

The food whose sample is taken

will be examined in the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM). Not only that, Suamba mentioned that as subsequent measure the traders will be given coaching more consistently to receive and sell licensed foods, do not contain harmful substances to health and do not sell expired food or drink.

Other than by the team of In-dustry and Trade Agency as well as Health Agency, the supervision against food and beverages sold

for children was also carried out directly by Regional Secretary of Gianyar, Ida Bagus Gaga Adi Saputra. The man affectionately addressed as Gus Gaga also made inspection to a number of schools, such as the SDN 6 Gianyar elemen-tary school, SDN 1 Abianbase, SMPN 1 Gianyar junior high school and SMKN 1 Gianyar vo-cational school. One of the main targets in the inspection is school canteen.

“This has something to do with

the government’s program to meet all the needs and rights of children in the effort of Gianyar to become a children-eligible town (KLA),” said Gus Gaga. He explained that food security is a form of rein-forcement by Gianyar heading for children-eligible town. Healthy children start from a healthy food anyway. The food and beverage consumed by children may not contain the preservatives, coloring, sweetener, leavening agent and chewer. (kmb25)

In the indictment, Lin Jia Ling who worked as a clerk in a Tai-wan’s beauty salon, with the

passport number 309430722, was caught by custom officer after getting out of the plane and pass-

ing through the arrival terminal of the Ngurah Rai International Airport.

After interrogation and inspec-tion, the officers found goods sus-pected to be crystal meth placed in a plastic clip with plastic pipette. Having weighed, it is 0.88 gram gross or 0.60 gram net. It is found

inside of the black bra worn by defendant Lin Jia Ling.

When being examined by po-lice investigators, the defendant Lin Jia Ling admitted that when she wanted to get out of a rented house, she found a plastic clip containing crystal meth and did not know exactly who left it. As

a result of her action, Lin Jia Ling was charged by using a number of alternative articles such as Article 113 paragraph (1) of Law No.35/2009 on narcotics, namely importing drugs into the customs territory of Indonesia without necessary permission from the authorities. (kmb37)

DENPASAR - As caught with crystal meth weighing 0.6 gram, a Chinese traveler, Lin Jia Ling, 24, was on trial in Denpasar District Court, Thursday (Aug. 13). Public prosecutor, I Dewa Ayu Surasmi, in the presence of the panel of judges led by Beslin Sihombing, read the indictment.

BANGLI - Songan B village in Kinta-mani is not only famous for being onion-producing area. Lately, some farmers try their luck by cultivating chayote. Other than having high price, it turns out the quality of chayote is still less maximal.

One of the local farmers, I Wayan Merta, said that farmers are interested in cultivating chayote because its main-tenance is very easy. Farmers are fairly enough to trim the old trunk and clean dried leaves. Likewise, the fertilization is only done once a year.

In addition, this plant is rarely attacked by pests, so that farmers do not need to spray pesticides. Unlike shallot or other vegetables, they must require a lot of capi-tal. “Maintenance is very easy, unlike other vegetables that require many funds to buy fertilizers and pesticides,” he explained.

He delivered further that looking for chayote seedling is not difficult. Farmers just need to cultivate quite mature seeds by placing it in a cool location. Once sprout-ed, the seeds are directly transplanted to the estate. In relatively short time, after four months old the chayote has borne fruit and will be productive until the age of three years.

“Cultivation is very easy. We do not need to purchase its seedlings. Chayote can be productive for more than three years,” he said.

Further, Merta added that the selling price of chayote is currently very promis-ing. A sack of chayote containing 200 pieces is sold for IDR 80,000. This price is much higher than previously only reaching IDR 10,000 to IDR 25,000. “Since two weeks ago, the price of chayote started to go up reaching to three times,” he explained.

Behind the high price, Merta mentioned that some chayote have inferior quality. This certainly reduces the amount of sales of farmers. Buyers are just looking for chayote with good quality and smooth skin. In the meantime, the skin of chayote produced by farmers has brown spots. Similarly, many of its flowers fall and yield a few results. “In the meantime, buyers are just looking for a smooth fruit. They will not purchase the fruits with small flaws. Ultimately the sales slightly reduced,” he said.

Merta also added that chayote harvest is performed once a week and can produce ten sacks. Associated with marketing area, he said that his party immediately brought it to collectors and then it is distributed to markets outside Bali. “Harvest is done every week. It is only sold to collectors and continues to be marketed to outside Bali,” he said. (kmb45)

“We have invited citizens, fishermen, farmers, and children from orphanages. There were one thousand additional invita-tions, most of which were for the community, and 30 percent for the officials,” Minister/State Secretary Pratikno noted on the sidelines of the flag hoisting ceremony led by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

The ceremony was also attend-ed by former president Megawati Soekarnoputri along with former vice presidents: Try Sutrisno, Hamzah Has, and Boediono.

Several cabinet ministers, the Defense Forces commander, the National Police chief, the attor-ney general, and foreign diplo-mats were also in attendance.

President Jokowi, who was accompanied by Vice President Jusuf M. Kalla and First lady Iriana Widodo, was the inspector of the ceremony.

The ceremony, commemorat-ing the proclamation of inde-pendence, kicked off with a 17-cannon salute and the reading of the Proclamation Text by House Speaker Setya Novanto.

The head of state led the min-utes of silence observed to pray for the fallen heroes who had fought for the country’s freedom from the Dutch and Japanese colonizers.

TIMIKA - President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia Maroef Sjam-soeddin said the U.S. mining giant was worried by uncertainty over extension of its contract.

“Currently we are facing a very important test in the history of PT Freeport Indonesia,” Maroef said when speaking as inspector of cer-emony commemorating the 70th anni-versary of the country’s independence on Monday.

He said the parent company Free-port McMoRan Copper & Gold has issued a policy of ‘cost reduction pro-gram’ in facing the difficult time.

He said the company also is facing problem with the shrinking commod-ity prices in the global market.

As a result the price of the com-pany shares has fallen in international markets, he added. At the same time, the company needs much larger in-vestment to continue the process of production from underground mining, and for the capacity expansion of its Gresik copper smelter in East Java.

The company plans to build a new smelter to process its copper concentrate in Gresik to comply with the government regulation requiring

mining companies to process their minerals in the country.

Maroef called for “understanding of the objective condition and sup-port for the steps to be taken by the management to take decision.”

Earlier, legislator from Papua Wil-helmus Pigai asked the government to involve the regional administration and legislators from Papua and the Council of the People of Papua in discussing renewal of the contract for PT Freeport Indonesia.

Wilhemus said the central govern-ment is not the only one having the right to discuss the renewal of the contract of PT Freeport.

Papua governor Lukas Enembe and Mimika District Head Eltinus Omaleng, therefore, need to invite all parties concerned to discuss exten-sion of the contract of PT Freeport Indonesia.

The present contract of work signed in 1991 by President Soeharto would expire in 2021.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka’s leader for nine years until his Jan. 8 presidential election defeat to a former ally, was running for prime minister, a position that is second to that of president.

Since that election loss, there has been a reversal of fortunes for Ra-japaksa, his family and friends, who were once all powerful controllers of the island nation. Some of them now face investigations or lawsuits for corruption, misuse of power and even murder.

Jagath Dissanayake, a 40-year-old businessman from the western city of Gampaha, said that he voted to continue what he called positive changes that the country has seen since Rajapaksa’s defeat.

He said he voted to build a “decent country that respects the rights of all the communities and safeguards the democratic rights of the people.” Dis-sanayake noted that Rajapaksa’s camp lost in the presidential election and said he should be defeated again and “sent home forever.’ Others, however, said the allegations against Rajapaksa were politically motivated.

“A lot of allegations were leveled at Mahinda Rajapaksa and his team, but

so far no one has been sentenced and punished. For me it means they were politically motivated allegations,” said Lalantha Rasika, a 41-year-old businessman.

Rajapaksa was hailed a warrior king for defeating the Tamil Tiger separatists to end a nearly 26-year civil war. However, he is accused of using his popularity to take control of Parliament, the courts, the armed forces and all government institutions. He was also accused of widespread human rights abuses and suppressing freedoms.

Rajapaksa was seeking an extended period of rule after abolishing a two-term limit for presidents when he lost in his attempt to win a third term.

His main rival in Monday’s election was the incumbent, Ranil Wickremes-inghe, a two-time prime minister.

President Maithripala Sirisena, who was Rajapaksa’s health minister, is backing Wickremesinghe, with whom he formed an alliance in the January election after breaking away from Rajapaksa’s government.

Sirisena recently sent a letter to Rajapaksa, which he also released to the media, saying he would not appoint him prime minister even if

he secures a majority in Parliament. Sirisena also accused Rajapaksa of promoting ethnic disharmony.

Polls closed late Monday after-noon, and the first results were ex-pected after midnight (1830 GMT).

A majority for Rajapaksa would put Sirisena in an uneasy position, with loyalists likely to pressure him to name Rajapaksa prime minister. The prime minister acts for the president in his absence and replaces him if he is impeached, incapacitated or dies.

A majority for Wickremesinghe, meanwhile, would create a cohabita-tion government between the parties, led by Sirisena and Wickremesinghe, who have traditionally been bitter rivals.

Sri Lanka’s Parliament has 225 members, so any party or coalition must win at least 113 seats to form a government.

A local monitoring group, the Campaign for Free and Fair Elec-tions, said that voter turnout was high and that election laws were be-ing followed. The group said some candidates who attempted indirect campaigning near polling stations were told to stop by the police. (ap)

KABUL, Afghanistan — A Ger-man woman was kidnapped in Ka-bul on Monday by armed assailants, a senior Afghan police official said. Gul Agha Rouhani, Kabul’s deputy police chief, said the woman was taken by two gunmen who stopped her car early Monday morning.

The woman, who has not been identified, is believed to be em-ployed by German government aid agency GIZ.

No comment was immediately available from the German embassy or GIZ in Kabul. The German For-eign Office and GIZ head office in Germany also did not comment. Se-curity in Kabul has deteriorated in recent months as Taliban insurgents have intensified their war against the Kabul government.

The insurgents have repeatedly said they would deliberately target

foreigners. In recent months in-surgents have launched a series of deadly attacks on offices, residen-tial compounds and guest houses occupied by foreign nationals.

As the economy deteriorates and jobs dry up, abduction for ransom is also becoming more common, though mainly targeting Afghans.

Foreigners are seen as potentially lucrative kidnap victims, and while many live within strict security pa-rameters, security measures such as armored cars can raise their profile for would-be kidnappers.

Earlier this year, a German na-tional working with GIZ in northern Afghanistan was kidnapped as he drove through an area of Kunduz province called Ali Abad, well known as a hotbed of insurgent activity. He escaped in May after being held for six weeks. (ap)

PARIS — Indian budget airline IndiGo finalized an exceptionally large order for 250 single-aisle Air-bus A320neo jets on Monday to keep up with rapid growth in the country’s air travel.

IndiGo, India’s largest domestic airline, had signed a preliminary order last year and firmed it up Mon-day, Airbus said in a statement. Air-bus called it the biggest ever order by number of jets for the planmaker based in Toulouse, France.

At list prices, the jets would cost $26 billion, though customers usu-ally negotiate discounts.

Several Asian low-cost carriers are building up fleets amid grow-ing demand, and both Airbus and rival Boeing Co. have been wooing Indian airline companies.

India is expected to become the third largest aviation market globally by 2020, with the number of airline

passengers tripling to some 450 mil-lion trips per year, as an expanding middle class trades up from slow train journeys to taking a plane.

IndiGo’s president, Aditya Ghosh, said the order would allow his company to further develop low-cost travel in India and abroad. The company has already taken delivery of around 100 Airbus aircraft that were part of an order for 180 aircraft worth $15.6 billion signed in 2011.

Despite the projected growth, airlines in India are generally un-profitable due to high fuel costs and stiff competition. Except for IndiGo, most other airlines, including state-owned Air India, have been incur-ring huge losses and are in financial distress.

“I’m not sure she will have stayed up to watch this one but, Amelie, this one’s for you,” Murray said. The Scotsman climbed a spot to number two in the world rank-ings after capturing his fourth title of the year in a major boost to his confidence ahead of the U.S. Open, starting in New York at the end of the month.

Djokovic suffered just his fourth loss this year and his first in a Masters Series finals since falling to Roger Federer in Cincinnati in 2012. “Andy is deservedly a winner today on the court,” Djokovic said. “I thought what made the difference was his serve and my serve. I didn’t serve well the first set and a half.

“But not taking anything away from him, from his victory. He deserved it. He stepped in, played

some great shots. Most of all the moments when he needed to, he served very, very well.” Murray got the decisive break in the sec-ond game of the final set but had to survive an 18-minute service game to consolidate his lead in the fifth game before claiming his third title on the Canadian hardcourts, and first since 2010.

“We’ve played many matches like that, especially in grand slams,” Mur-ray said. “If this was the U.S. Open, we’d have to play another couple of sets like that, which isn’t easy.

“He’s obviously one of the best returners in the world and he obvi-ously has a lot of confidence to stand and fight right to the end, so you have to play right to the end of the match and weather the storms when they come, and I managed to

that today.”Born just a week apart, Murray

and Djokovic have known each other since they were children, attending the same training camps and competing against each other in junior events. Fierce rivals on the court, the pair embraced at the net after a three-hour battle of at-trition that left both men exhausted as courtside temperatures reached 40C. “Everybody wants me and Novak to dislike each other and people always try to stir things up between us,” Murray said.

“It’s impossible to be extremely close when we’re playing in these sorts of matches because it’s so mentally challenging and physi-cally demanding and you need to try to still have that competitive edge as well.

“But it’s not easy, not only be-cause we get on but because he’s bloody good, he’s number one in the world and he hasn’t lost in a Masters Series this year. To win against him is extremely tough.” (rtr)

Murray ends drought against Djokovic with Montreal win

MONTREAL - Andy Murray recorded his first win over Novak Djokovic in more than two years on Sunday, beating the world number one 6-4 4-6 6-3 in the final of the Rogers Cup. Murray snapped an eight-match losing streak to Djokovic with his first win over the Serb since the 2013 Wimbledon final, then dedicated the victory to his coach Amelie Mauresmo, who gave birth to a baby boy earlier in the day.

Jorge Lorenzo capped a dominant weekend at Brno with victory in the Czech MotoGP, drawing level with Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi in the riders’ championship. With the pair and fellow championship contender Marc Marquez sharing the front row, hopes of a memorable battle didn’t eventuate, with Lorenzo controlling the race from start to finish.

The polesitter got the best start and shook off early pressure from Marquez, edging further and further away from the Honda rider during the 22 laps to eventually win by more than four seconds. With his fifth victory of the season, Lorenzo draws level with Rossi atop the standings, with reigning world cham-pion Marquez 52 points behind them.

Rossi’s chances were dashed off the line, dropping from third to fifth following a slow start.

By the time he was back in the top three, after passing Andrea Dovizioso on the second lap, Lorenzo and Marquez were more than two seconds up the road. That grew to nearly eight seconds by the midway point of the race, and while the Italian ran at a similar pace to Marquez, he had settle for a lonely third.

Dovizioso led the Ducati battle early, but was passed by team-mate Andrea Iannone who took fourth.

In the closing laps, Dovizioso had to defend fifth heavily from Dani Pedrosa, who advanced from ninth on the grid, battling the left ankle injury he sustained in a practice crash on Friday. In one of the race’s few on-track fights, Pedrosa eventually got past the Ducati rider at Turn 8 on the final lap to take fifth.

Bradley Smith leapt into third place off the line, but faded to finish seventh, ahead of Tech 3 team-mate Pol Espargaro, Suzuki’s Aleix Espargaro and Pramac Ducati rider Danilo Petrucci. Maverick Vinales and Cal Crutchlow ran ninth and 10th for the bulk of the race, but both fell at Turn 11 in separate incidents. (rtr)

Last season’s runners-up City won 3-0 at West Bromwich Al-bion in their league opener last week and Kompany headed in the second goal in the 79th minute on Sunday as his side defeated champions Chelsea by an identi-cal margin.

“As a defender, it (his goal) isn’t what I take most pride in.

I’m very happy with the two clean sheets so far,” the 29-year-old Belgian international told the club’s website (www.mcfc.com).

“If I can contribute up front then great but the clean sheet is what makes me sleep well at night.”

Kompany’s team mate Sergio

Aguero, who opened his account for the season on Sunday, has played down the significance of a five-point lead over Chelsea, who drew their first match 2-2 against Swansea City.

“The first goal is always important as it allowed the team to be calm,”

PARIS — Announcing his bid to run for FIFA president, Chung Mong-Joon pledged to help the governing body clean itself up if he gets elected. Speaking at a news conference in Paris on Monday, the South Korea said “it is my privilege and honor to announce my candi-dacy,” before quickly turning his sights on long-serving president Sepp Blatter.

After 17 years as FIFA presi-dent, Blatter said on June 2 he was standing down, under pressure from American and Swiss federal inves-tigations of widespread corruption implicating senior FIFA officials.

“The real reason FIFA has be-come such a corrupt organization is because the same person and his cronies have been running it for 40 years. Absolute power corrupts absolutely,” Chung said. “It has pained me to witness the spectacle of the FIFA president being booed by the fans at football stadiums ev-erywhere. In 2011, when a European sports magazine conducted a survey asking ‘What do you think about FIFA President Joseph Blatter?’ 95 percent said ‘Blatter is ruining football.’”

On May 27, a United States federal investigation of corruption in world soccer was unleashed on FIFA. Though Blatter won re-election two days later, it took only four more days before he decided to step down. Chung, a FIFA honorary vice president, promised change if he wins the election on Feb. 26.

“Under these circumstances, the FIFA president must be a crisis manager and a reformer. He must be more than just a head of the technical department,” the 63-year-old South

Korean Chung said at a Paris hotel. “After decades of an ever-widening circle of corruption, FIFA needs a leader who can bring back common sense, transparency and account-ability.”

UEFA President Michel Platini has already declared his candidacy and is widely favored to replace Blatter. The former France mid-fielder, a FIFA insider after 13 years as an executive committee member, has taken advantage of his access to soccer powerbrokers.

At the Champions League final in Berlin and FIFA meetings in Zu-rich and St. Petersburg, Russia, he outlined his plans and gained early support.

“Michel was a great football player. I played golf twice with Michel, his swing is not that great, it’s lucky he chose football instead of golf,” Chung said, who criticized Platini for having a “father and son” and “mentor-student” relationship with Blatter over the years. Platini was formerly a supporter of Blatter. Would-be candidates must apply by Oct. 26. FIFA members from the 209 national federations elect the president.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, who lost the last FIFA election vote 133-73 to Blatter on May 29, is also touted to stand again. Former Brazil great Zico, who scored 48 goals in 71 games for his country, and Liberian soccer federation president Musa Bility are also among those reportedly plan-ning to run.

Chung was a member of FIFA’s executive committee from the mid-1990s until 2011. During that time, he was an opponent of Blatter. (ap)

PARIS — De-fending cham-

pion Paris Saint-

G e r -main moved to the top of the French league after beating Gazelec Ajaccio 2-0 on Sunday in a match pitting the biggest and smallest budgets in the division.

PSG’s annual budget of 500 million euros ($555 million) dwarfs Gazelec’s 14 million euros ($15.6 million), but after goals from midfielder Blaise Matuidi and center half Thiago Silva in the first 21 minutes, PSG struggled to put chances away.

PSG has six points from two matches and leads Reims and Nor-mandy side Caen on goal difference.

“We could have scored more but they were well organized and didn’t want to concede,” Matuidi said. “It’s a pity we didn’t take more of our chances, but we didn’t concede any goals and that’s good because last season teams often equalized against us.”

Earlier, Marseille’s turbulent sea-son got worse with a 1-0 loss away to Reims, after conceding an early goal and finishing the match with 10 men. In Sunday’s other match, Lorient drew 1-1 at home to Bastia.

Corsican side Gazelec’s tiny sta-dium has a capacity of 4,800 — 10 times less than PSG’s Parc des Princes — while coach Thierry Laurey’s monthly salary of 20,000 euros is 25 times less than his PSG counterpart Laurent Blanc’s.

“You have to be demanding both individually and collectively, no mat-ter who you play against,” Blanc said. “We’re making changes to the squad. It will give us more momentum and motivation (and) the squad needs it.”

PSG paraded new signing Angel di Maria, who cost 63 million euros ($69 million), before the home fans, but the Argentina winger sat out the match with a thigh injury.

With star striker Zlatan Ibrahi-movic also sidelined with an ankle injury, 18-year-old Paris-born striker Jean-Kevin Augustin started his first

BARCELONA— Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is “completely convinced” that his star-studded squad has enough firepower to overturn its 4-0 loss at Athletic Bilbao and win the Spanish Super Cup in the second leg on Monday night.

Luis Enrique is hoping for a stron-ger defensive performance at Camp Nou after conceding eight goals in the last two outings.

“We are completely convinced. This team is up to a challenge of this magnitude,” Luis Enrique said Sunday. “If we play like we did last season then we have a chance.

“I have looked at the statis-tics and we had 18 games (last season) when we scored four or more goals. We have the talent, we are going to be in better shape and, when Barca plays, anything can happen. We cannot make mistakes. We are capable of scoring four or more goals, but we cannot let them score.”

Barcelona will need a major come-back to keep alive its quest to match the six titles won in a year under for-mer manager Pep Guardiola. It won the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday, beating Sevilla 5-4 after extra time with two goals from Lionel Messi.

After seeing his players tire easily and needing a late goal from Pedro Rodriguez to finally topple Sevilla,

Luis Enrique made several changes to his starting 11 in the first leg against Bilbao on Friday.

That badly backfired as Bilbao’s up-tempo defense drew mistakes from inexperienced Sergi Roberto. Veteran defender Dani Alves had an exceptionally poor showing for Bar-celona, plagued with lapses

that helped

s t r iker Ar i tz Aduriz score two goals

before needlessly giving away a penalty as Aduriz

completed his hat trick.Luis Enrique will now be un-

der pressure to start his first-choice players, even though Barcelona faces an arguably more important Spanish league opener back at Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium next weekend.

The coach will still be without Neymar, who has the mumps, and injured left back Jordi Alba. Both Jeremy Mathieu and Adriano made mistakes that led to goals in place of Alba against Sevilla and Bilbao.

“During training on Saturday we analyzed what happened and why. We used real situations from last

season and we saw how our players’ and coaches’ faces changed,” Luis Enrique said. “Now we have to change the faces of our fans.”

Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde will

have forward Inaki Williams and midfielder Fran Rico back from injury for the away match. But he may be tempted to give consecutive starts to Sabin Merino and Javier Eraso, first-team newcomers whose pace caused Barcelona’s defenders problems up front and played a role in two of Aduriz’s goals.

Despite being one of Spain’s most historically successful clubs, Bilbao, which only fields players born in the northern Basque Country or neighboring regions, won its last title in 1984.

“For Barca, this is just another tro-phy, and not one as important as the Champions League or the Spanish league. For us, this means everything after so long without winning one,” said Valverde. “But we are facing

Barca and we know that this team even if not playing at 100 percent can still create five or six clear s c o r i n g chances. We know t h a t t h e y w i l l b e moti-vated b e -cause the six titles would also be historic for them.”

game for the club.PSG’s incessant early pressure

paid off in the 12th minute when Silva’s cross was poorly dealt with and Matuidi reacted quickest to lash a shot past goalkeeper Clement Maury. Then, Silva made it 2-0 in the 22nd

with a thumping header from mid-fielder Thiago Motta’s corner, and Augustin went close with a header

in a one-sided first half.Edinson Cavani, who cost 64 mil-

lion euros ($71.2 million) when he joined PSG from Napoli two years ago, flashed a header over the cross-bar midway through the second half and then had another header saved by Maury.

Missed headers became the theme of the second half, as right back Serge

Aurier went just wide with a diving header in the 80th, and Maury kept out efforts from center half David Luiz and again from Cavani in the closing stages.

“Of course it’s hard to compete (against PSG) but we gave every-thing,” Gazelec defender Roderic Filippi said. Notoriously volatile Marseille was thrown into turmoil last weekend when coach Marcelo Bielsa resigned moments after a home defeat to Caen, despite pledging days earlier that he was about to sign a two-year contract.

Bielsa’s resignation has shocked the club, especially as he became hugely popular with fans who know feel they have been completely be-trayed. (ap)

game for the club.PSG’s incessant early pressure

paid off in the 12th minute when Silva’s cross was poorly dealt with and Matuidi reacted quickest to lash a shot past goalkeeper Clement Maury.

(ap)

(rtr)

JAKARTA - Four foreign tour-ists were missing after leaving for a scuba diving trip in the waters off Indonesia’s island of Borneo, an official said Sunday.

The group of six, identified as five Italians and a Belgian, had

Meanwhile a number of leaders of the Amungme tribes planned to meet President Joko Widodo to ask about their demand for compensations for land used by Freeport. (ant)

“The currents are strong and waves are up to 2.5 metres. We hope they have drifted to the smaller islands and are safe,” he added.

Sudirman said the authorities are still investigating the case and searching for the missing tourists would be a priority.

Dozens of lawmakers in Merkel’s conservative bloc plan to oppose the new bailout package for Greece at a special session of Parliament on Wednesday. (ap)

(kmb45)

(ap)

Indonesia’s mountainous eastern-most province.

The Trigana Air Service plane was flying from Papua’s pro-vincial capital, Jayapura, to the Papua city of Oksibil when it lost contact with Oksibil’s airport. Transportation Ministry spokes-man Julius Barata said there was

no indication that the pilot had made a distress call.

Officials said the wreckage was spotted about 12 kilometers (7 miles) from Oksibil. Henry Bam-bang Soelistyo, the chief of the Na-tional Search and Rescue Agency, said search and rescue teams were preparing to try to reach the crash site by air and foot.

The ATR42-300 twin turbo-prop plane was carrying 49 pas-sengers and five crew members on a scheduled 42-minute journey.

Five children, including two infants, were among the pas-sengers.

“Smoke was still billowing from the wreckage when it was spotted by a plane search,” said Soelistyo who is leading the rescue operation from Sentani Airport in Jayapura, adding that bad weather and rugged terrain were hampering efforts to reach the wreckage located in a moun-tainous area at an altitude of 2,600 meters (about 8,500 feet).

He said elite forces from the air force and army will build a helipad for evacuation purposes near the crash site.

(ap)
