So far, we have not known whether the hotel rooms are still required or the number has been excessive,” he said. Other than validity of the tour- ism statistical data, Ngurah Wijaya also highlighted the tourism devel- opment in Bali had changed its role into a real estate. This condition was inseparable from the popularity of Bali in the world, so that every- one wanted to have it. “This shift will be harmful to Bali. We will get nothing because the real estate is the sale of property. To that end, my suggestion is that provincial and regency government should make a temporary morato- rium,” he said. For information, up to 2010 the number of hotel room in Bali has reached 45,408 and increased to 55,000 rooms in 2011. Meanwhile, the number of hotel rooms in Bali in 2009 was totally recorded of 46,014 rooms consisting of 2,175 accommodation units. The data indicate the difference between the total hotel rooms in 2009 and 2010. Of the total rooms in Bali, about 90 percent were located in Badung Regency. Gavin — who has directed rock tours and London’s 2007 Princess Diana memo-rial concert — said Saturday he wants the spectacular to be “the best after-show party that’s ever been.” “If the opening ceremony was the wedding, then we’re the wedding reception,” music director David Arnold told the Daily Telegraph.

Although organizers have tried to keep the ceremony acts secret, many details have leaked out in the British media — and some performers have let the cat out of the bag themselves.

The Who, George Michael, Muse and Ed Sheeran have all said they will take part

in a show that will include performances of 30 British hit singles from the past five decades — whittled down by Gavin from a possible 1,000. The Pet Shop Boys, Annie Lennox and Fatboy Slim will also be on hand to get people dancing.

Gavin said the show will open with a tribute to the “cacophony” of London life, with a soundtrack ranging from the late Edward Elgar — composer of the “Pomp and Circumstance” march — to The Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset.” Frontman Ray Davies is expected to perform the 1960s song, a love letter to London.

Thousands of athletes from 204 com-

peting nations will march in and become a standing, milling audience — Gavin dubbed them the “mosh pit” — for the main section of the show, “A Symphony of British Music.”

Details of the performers have emerged through tips and photos coming out of the rehearsal venue, an old car plant in east London. While the creators of the opening ceremony could rehearse for weeks inside Olympic Stadium, Gavin and his team have less than a day between the end of track and field competition and Sunday’s ceremony.

Gavin said he had 17 hours to get a show that involves multiple sets, pyrotechnics and 3,500 volunteer performers “from a car park to here.”

The Spice Girls were photographed dancing atop black London taxis, so a rendition of their biggest hit, “Wannabe,” seems likely. So does an appearance by surviving members of Queen, whose “We Will Rock You” has been ever-present at the games.

NEW YORK — Superstar singer Beyonce has serenaded a different New York City venue: The United Nations. Beyonce performed her song “I Was Here” on Friday in the UN’s General Assembly Hall in honor of World Humanitarian Day, which is Aug. 19. A music video of the performance will debut the same day.

Beyonce sang in front of hundreds, including Julia Stiles, R&B singer The-Dream and songwriter Diane Warren, who wrote the song.

Warren said in an interview that she initially

called Beyonce’s husband, Jay-Z, and played the song for him over the phone. He quickly called Beyonce, and days later she recorded it. It appears on her album “4,” released last year. Anderson Cooper hosted, saying with a laugh: “Is this what happens at the UN every Friday night?”

LONDON — Get the Union Jacks out and prepare to party: Olympic Stadium is being transformed into a giant jukebox of British pop and pizazz for the ceremony that wraps up the so-far spectacularly successful London Games. The Spice Girls and The Who are among the acts celebrat-ing two weeks of sporting competition with a Sunday finale that artistic director Kim Gavin calls “a mashed-up symphony” of British hits.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Negara (Bali Post)—The number of fishing ves-

sels operating in Pengamben-gan Harbor will be restricted to only 148 units. Surveil-lance against those vessels at Pengambengan will be tight-ened. If exceeding the number determined, their operation should be discontinued. It is intended to maintain the bal-ance of marine ecosystem in the waters of Jembrana.

The Head of Mari t ime, Fisheries and Forestry (KPK) Agency of Jembrana, Made Dwi Maharimbawa, said on Saturday (Aug 11) that pur-suant to the agreement with the government of East Java recently, the fishing vessels

in operation would be limited to 148 units. If the number had exceeded, their operation should be discontinued, more-over, if their existence in the waters of Bali was with-out equipped with supporting document or permit.

Besides, the restriction was also associated with the quota or capacity of diesel fuel al-located for fishermen (SPDN) at Pengambengan. “Now, the quota of diesel fuel at Pengam-bengan is 36,000 liters. Mean-while, the daily supply of subsidized diesel fuel ranges from 16,000 to 18,000 liters per day,” he explained. When all vessels were operated at Pengambengan, the total con-

sumption would reach 88,000 liters, not to mention the tradi-tional fishing boat with smaller tonnage.

There should be actually additional supply of diesel fuel in the station (SPBN) for fishermen, because so far they sometimes should purchased diesel fuel to public fuel sta-tion with a recommendation from related agency. The al-ternative was to re-operate the long closed SPBN at Perancak. His party worried if there was no increase in the subsidized diesel fuel at Pengambengan it would only sufficient for the fishing vessels, while the other traditional boats could not get the diesel fuel. Information compiled at loca-tion mentioned if the fire was alleged to come from the kitchen stove in the mosque. At that time, the mosque keeper, Tahir Murad, 60, was indeed boiling water by using a kerosene stove. However, after the stove was lighted, the mosque keeper went out without knowing if the stove fire was getting bigger and burned all the combustible items in the mosque.

Residents around the mosque just knew if the mosque was on fire after seeing the flames and smokes were billowing high above the mosque. They rushed out of the house. Some of them contacted the fire brigade. Mean-while, before the fire truck ar-rived, most of the residents at-

tempted to extinguish the fire by using a bucket and a hose con-nected to water tap in the mosque courtyard. Residents from various backgrounds such as Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and even foreigners who lived in the housing worked together to extin-guish the fire.

However, because the fire had already dilated and the winds blew so strongly, people attempt-ing to extinguish the fire manu-ally were fruitless. The fire had engulfed the mosque building up to the roof and ceiling. The fire was progressively dilating in the mosque as there were a number of flammable item inside such as sheets of carpet previously used for worship in the mosque. The

fire then could be completely extinguished around 11:00 a.m. after the fire brigade deployed four trucks to the fire scene.

The Head of the Al-Ashri Mosque, H. Hamdani, 52, con-firmed if the fire first appeared in the mosque kitchen. At that time, the mosque keeper, Tahir Murad, was lighting a stove to boil water. As planned, the hot water would be used to prepare coffee drink for handymen who were refur-bishing the mosque. Before the water was boiling, the fire had reached the mosque roof. “The stove was left and he cleaned up around the mosque. Probably, it was unknown if the stove fire spread causing the fire incident,” he said. (kmb15)

Tabanan (Bali Post)—The lineup of Bali Post employees held a flower sprinkle at Margarana

Memorial Park, Marga, Tabanan, Saturday (Aug 11). It was organized in conjunction with the 64th anniversary of Bali Post daily newspaper on the upcoming August 16. The flower sprinkle was led in person by CEO of Bali Post Media Group (KMB), Satria Naradha. Such procession was commenced with prayers en masse in the outermost courtyard of the Margarana Memo-rial Park led a local priest and then resumed with sprinkling flowers to all the graves. Satria Naradha started sprinkling flowers in the grave of I Gusti Ngurah Rai and then was followed by all other employees.

All participants looked to sprinkle flowers solemnly on all the hero’s graves lining up neatly. After sprinkling flowers, the activity was resumed with pay-ing homage to Puri Kestaria Dalem at Lumajang hamlet, Samsam village and ended with Agnihotra ritual in the Lumajang Ashram, Tabanan.

Chief Editor of Bali Post, Nyoman Wirata, explained the flower sprinkle was a regular activity held in conjunction with the anniversary of Bali Post. It aimed at revitalizing the patriotic spirits of the heroes. Furthermore, the spirit was implemented in the press activity as controlling media. Accord-ing to Wirata, Bali Post as a medium of struggle of Balinese people would oversee the existing development on the island. “So, from Bali we also help build nationally,” he said.

In conjunction with the anniversary of Bali Post was also held some dis-cussions to various regencies and municipality in Bali. The last discussion would be held with the Udayana University on August 15. Such discussion was expected to evaluate and provide some inputs related to the develop-ment of Bali.

Wirata added that it required a struggle for equitable development in Bali, especially in rural areas. Similarly, he expected there should be no public deception for the development. On the contrary, people’s aspirations had to be heard by all regency and provincial governments. According to him, Bali needed a variety of improvements to be better, from human resources to the economic environment. (kmb30)

Bali PostDENPASAR - Operation of the

Trans Sarbagita bus of corridor I in Denpasar remained unable to draw the interest of passengers. As monitoring made by Bali Post at some points on Friday morning (Aug 10), there were no passengers looking to take advantage of the mass transport service.

It was visible at bus stop in front of the SMAN 7 Denpasar senior high school. The bus was looking for passengers up to 30 minutes and it only took some bus crews. Meanwhile, no single passenger glanced at the blue bus, although the service was free of charge.

“Let’s come in, it’s free,” said the bus crew to the students. Unfor-tunately, many students remained to ride a motorcycle, so the exis-tence of the bus could not be used maximally.

While on a separate occa-sion, the Operation Manager of Trans Sarbagita Bali, IB Parsha, understood about the lack of pas-sengers. “Yes, there are only one or two passengers because it is the first day of operation. People may still be wondering whether the Trans Sarbagita has been re-ally in operation. As evidence, we received many phone calls asking about the bus,” he said.

IB Parsha said to have con-fidence if the Trans Sarbagita would be favored by community on later days so that it could be fully utilized. “As long as it is still free until September, I hope the community could use it well,” he added.

He described that effective September the Trans Sarbagita bus would apply normal rates where public passenger would be charged at IDR 3,500 and students at IDR 2,500. The rates were valid for all routes in Denpasar City to the cam-pus area of Bukit Jimbaran.

“For this first day, we operate five units. But, next Monday we do hope people have known about this so that we will operate all the armada (10 buses and 1 backup),” he explained.

For information, the route passed through by Trans Sarbagita starts from the Ngurah Rai Sta-dium and then goes to bus stop in front of SMAN 7 senior high school, bus stop on Jalan Surapati, bust stop on Jalan Sudirman or in front of the Udayana Univer-sity campus, Sesetan and leads to Dewa Ruci intersection and Bukit Jimbaran campus. Then, it turns in the area of Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) tourist resort and goes back to Denpasar. (kmb27)

The Deputy Police Chief of Bali, Brigadier General Ketut Untung Yoga Ana, stated that the 5,307-strong police force comprised 1,300 officers on special duty and 4,007 personnel on routine duty.

“The 1,300 police officers are for the Operasi Ketupat 2012 pro-gramme, who will ensure security during Idul Fitri. Fortunately, the operation is also supported by In-donesian Military personnel,” he said, after attending the morning ceremony of Operasi Ketupat 2012 at Puputan Margarana Renon, here on Friday.

The National Police have des-ignated Bali as a priority area dur-ing the Idul Fitri holiday exodus, because the province is an interna-tional tourism destination and needs high security.

The Bali police office has set up 22 security posts in congestion-prone areas, such as Gilimanuk Port, Padang Bai Port, Mengwi and Ngurah Rai International Airport.

It “was an amazing coincidence that we were able to catch this impact,” said engineer Steve Sell of the NASA Jet Pro-pulsion Laboratory, which man-ages the $2.5 billion mission.

The nuclear-powered rover landed in Gale Crater near the equator Sunday night to study whether environmental condi-tions could have favored mi-crobes. Its ultimate target is a mountain looming from the crater floor where mineral signatures of water have been spied.

Curiosity performed a novel, complex landing routine. In the final seconds, the rocket stage

hovered as cables delicately lowered the rover to the ground. After landing, it cut the cords and the rocket stage flew out of the way, crashing 2,000 feet from the landing site.

Speeding at 100 mph, the high-speed impact kicked up a plume of dust — which showed up in Curiosity’s field of view. Curiosity was in the right place at the right time and facing the right direction, Sell said.

Since the feat, Curiosity has returned a flood of pictures in-cluding a 360-degree color view and a low-resolution video fea-turing the last minutes of its de-scent. Over the weekend, it will get a software update, a process that will take four days. During the hiatus, stored data will con-tinue to be downloaded.

Bullfrogs, often shipped live between continents to be eaten, are spreading the deadly chytrid fungus that is threatening amphib-ians worldwide, new research indicates.

A team of researchers collected bullfrogs on sale at Asian food stores in seven cities in the United States and found 41 percent of the frogs were infected with the fungus.

The chytrid fungus is harmless to people, but it has caused spe-cies declines and even extinctions among amphibians. However, it is not fatal to all amphibians. The fun-gus doesn’t kill the North American bullfrog, the type of frog sampled in this study, making this species an excellent carrier.

Frogs in these U.S. shops are imported live primarily from farms in Taiwan, Brazil and Ecuador. In the United States, the live frogs are then sold for their legs.

The team also looked for fungus at frog farms in Brazil and among several native frog species from

Death knows the small town of Prieska all too well. A poisonous legacy of South Africa’s years as a global blue asbestos hub, the Grim Reaper has snaked through here for decades, wiping out families and striking down neighbours with deadly precision. “In most of the houses in our street, there is someone who has died of asbestosis or meso-thelioma,” said Chris Julius, 58, who was diagnosed with asbestos cancer three months after his mother-in-law passed away next door.

A former teacher, Julius never worked at the town’s mill or in the nearby hills where mining started in the late 1800s along rich deposits known as the country’s “asbestos mountains” that run along the vast Northern Cape.

But he has mesothelioma, an aggressive lung cancer whose diagnosis is a death sentence. “It felt like I was going to the electric chair,” said Julius, who lives 100 metres (yards) from where the now-

demolished mill once spat dust over the town.

“I still feel the same. I live from one day to the next. I can’t really plan. It’s very difficult for me to say goodbye, I can’t even discuss it with my wife. For her, it’s just as emotional an issue.”

Locals were once pitted against mining firms in David and Goliath-style class action battles which were settled about a decade ago. Yet nearly one in three homes is still contaminated, according to govern-ment statistics.

Environmental scientist Rob Jones estimates asbestos exposure is killing up to 52 people a year in the Northern Cape, while nearly 90 percent of 36 communities he sur-veyed had one or more sites ranked as severe risk.

“This is really a national envi-ronmental emergency that should be dealt with. It is analogous to Libby, Montana in the US and Wittenoom, Australia,” said Jones, who has studied contamination levels for the state.

PASADENA, Calif. — Space enthusiasts have been abuzz for days over whether the Mars rover Curiosity captured an extraterrestrial crash. On Friday, NASA declared the mystery solved. Seconds after the car-size rover parked its six wheels in an ancient crater, a tiny camera under the chassis snapped a picture revealing a smudge on the horizon. The feature disap-peared in a later photo.

Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, one of the most amphibian-rich regions in the world.

Their work revealed four new strains of chytrid, also known as Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis or Bd. One of these was found on a bullfrog in southeastern Michigan. This frog appeared to have come

from a farm in the Atlantic Forest region, where sampling from native frogs revealed that the four strains are common.

By comparing these strains with those described from studies in Japan, the team found Brazil-ian chytrid had made its way to Japan.

They consisted of 1 security post, 1 service post, 3 monitoring posts and 4 tourist object monitoring posts. Aside from establishing the posts, hundreds of personnel were also deployed to provide security services. The security was closely working with relevant agencies.

Chief of Badung Police, Beny Arjanto, Saturday (Aug11) ex-plained that at least 2/3 of the forces in the Badung Police or 250 person-nel were prepared for the security of the Eid. However, there was a new look in the current Eid where the Badung Police should do extra duties as the Mengwi Terminal A had been operated. To anticipate any vulnerability in the Mengwi Terminal like congestion, theft and other crimes, the Badung Police made cooperation with the Badung Regency, Badung Military District, Jasa Raharja Insurance and other elements.

The Badung Police Chief also explained that his party had estab-lished an integrated service post in Mengwi Terminal operated for 24 hours until seven days after the Eid. As predicted, the domestic tourists would throng the tourist objects in Badung during the long holiday. To that end, the Badung Police needed to set up four monitoring posts. With the post establishment, the homecomers and tourists were ex-

pected to feel comfortable and safe in celebrating the Eid procession and taking the tourism activities.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Unit Chief of Badung Police, M. Djoko Arief, added that security posts on Jalan Raya Sempidi, exactly in front of the Badung Civic Center were functioned to anticipate the congestion on the main route along

7 kilometers. The anticipation was focused on the border of Sempidi-Denpasar and Mengwi-Tabanan. “For the posts, it has been deployed 29 personnel, including the officers from the Badung Transportation Agency. It applies a shift system where some 9 personnel will be on duty in each shift,” said Chief Arief Djoko.

The other posts were located in Petang, Canggu, Mengwi and mon-itoring post at Cempaka Market, Kapal. Each monitoring post was guarded by 15 personnel and led by one officer. Similarly, each post was equipped with an ambulance, fire truck and motor service. The security service took placed during August 11-26, 2012. Four targets

focused in the operation were loca-tion, goods, people and others. “We appeal all the people going home to comply with the traffic rules. Like-wise, they are expected not to ride motorcycle. It is very hazardous as the distance covered will be surely long enough,” pleaded the former Deputy Chief of Traffic of the Den-pasar Metro Police. (kmb21)

The U.S. Geological Survey report-ed that Saturday’s first quake at 4:53 p.m. (1223 GMT) had a magnitude of 6.4 and struck 37 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9 kilometers (6.2 miles). Its epicenter was a region between the towns of Ahar and Haris, about 200 miles (500 kilometers) northwest of the capital Tehran, according to Khalil Saei, local Crisis Committee chief, the TV report said.

The second quake with a magni-tude of 6.3 struck 11 minutes later, the U.S.G.S. reported. Its epicenter was 29 miles (48 kilometers) north-east of Tabriz at a depth of 6.1 miles (9.8 kilometers).

The quakes hit the towns of Ahar, Haris and Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province, the TV re-port said. At least six villages were totally leveled, and 60 others sus-tained damage ranging from 50 to

80 percent, it said.At least 10 aftershocks jolted the

same area and were felt in a wide region near the Caspian Sea, caus-ing panic among the population.

Saei urged people in the quake region to stay outdoors and spend the night at parks and open spaces in anticipation of more aftershocks. Authorities feared the death toll could rise as rescuers were still try-ing to reach people trapped under rubble and had not yet reacher some more remote villages.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It experi-ences at least one earthquake every day on average, although the vast majority are so small they go unnoticed.

Syrian forces shelled rebels in the battle-scarred city of Aleppo Sunday and gunfire was heard in Damascus, as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for the re-gime’s downfall to be speeded up.

The Shaar, Tariq al-Bab, Sakhur, Hanano and Bustan al-Qasr neigh-bourhoods all came under bom-bardment, as troops pressed a ground offensive they launched on Wednesday the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

An army colonel was killed in an assault by rebels in the Safira district, the Britain-based watch-dog said.

In the capital Damascus, gunfire was reported in the Qadam neigh-bourhood.

Heavy explosions were heard in the Damascus suburb of Harasta, the Observatory said. Elsewhere in the province, machinegun fire was heard in the town of Al-Tal, where 15 civilians were killed in shelling and clashes on Saturday as troops tried to regain control from rebels.

They were among 148 people killed across Syria on Saturday -- 85 civilians, 20 rebels and 43 soldiers, the Observatory said.

A rebel commander insisted his fighters were still putting up strong resistance around Salaheddin.

“Fierce fighting has continued without respite for the past 24 hours as the army tries to push us out of the neighbourhood,” Abdel Qader Saleh told AFP by telephone.

The Local Coordination Com-mittees, a network of activists on the ground, reported “intense and indiscriminate bombardment by aircraft flying over Sakhur and Hanano districts” of Aleppo, Syria’s commercial capital.

Troops backed by artillery stormed Salaheddin on Wednesday in the first stage of an offensive to recapture areas of the northern city taken by the rebels since July 20.

In the face of the escalating vio-lence, Clinton said in Turkey the “number one goal” of Washington and Ankara was to hasten the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and stop the bloodshed.

JANESVILLE, Wis. — Even before Wisconsin sent Paul Ryan to Congress, he was meticulously carving a path that seemed to point only upward.

As a young Capitol Hill staffer, he impressed Republican lawmak-ers with his hustle and intellectual curiosity. He blended quickly with an elite crop of conservative think-ers. By his 30s, he was a congress-man on his way to becoming a GOP name brand with his push-the-edge budget proposals.

Ryan’s climb reached new heights Saturday when Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced him as his running mate.

“Mitt’s Choice for VP is Paul

Ryan,” said a phone app Romney’s team created to spread the word to supporters.

As the chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan gives Romney a link to Capitol Hill lead-ership and underscores Romney’s effort to make the election a ref-erendum on the nation’s economic course. Romney also could see his standing improve in Wisconsin, a state President Barack Obama won handily four years ago but that could be much tighter this November.

Even so, Ryan has been a double-edged sword for Romney. The congressman’s endorsement of Romney came at a critical stage of the GOP primaries, giving him a boost in the Wisconsin race that effectively buried Romney’s final threat. But it also meant Romney

was embracing the Ryan-sponsored budget proposal that Democrats fiercely target as painful to the poor and elderly.

Still, the square-jawed congress-man is viewed as a bridge between the buttoned-up GOP establishment and the riled-up tea party move-ment.

At 42, Ryan has spent almost half of his life in the Washington fold, the last 14 representing a southern Wisconsin district that runs from the shores of Lake Michigan through farm country south of Madison.

Ryan grew up in Janesville and still lives just down the block from where he spent his boyhood. Dur-ing summers in college, Ryan was a salesman for Oscar Mayer and once drove the company’s famed Wienermobile.

Sharp is considering selling overseas factories to Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision in a bid to turn around its ailing finances, reports said Saturday.

The reports came as Hon Hai pushes to change the terms of its agreement to take a 10-percent stake in the cash-strapped firm, whose shares plunged this month after it announced a huge loss.

The Nikkei business daily said Sharp was eyeing sales of its liquid crystal display module plants, adding that the firm may also consider sales of domestic plants.

Sharp has LCD module plants in Mexico, Poland, China and Malaysia, the Nikkei said.

The firm is combing through its asset list

and is planning to make a decision on the sale by the end of September, Kyodo News said.

Hon Hai, parent company of manufac-turer Foxconn which builds gadgets for Apple, already jointly uses Sharp’s plants as production has slowed amid languish-ing TV sales. Sharp this month reported that it lost $1.77 billion in April-June and warned of a bigger full-year shortfall than first expected, prompting its shares to fall below 200 yen.

Hon Hai agreed in March to take a 10-percent stake in Sharp for about 550 yen ($7) per share but the firms are now renegotiating the investment.

Taiwan’s Investment Commission on Thursday returned Hon Hai’s application to buy the stake in Sharp and asked for more information about the deal, saying it feared the price was too high.

While Britain’s construction sector benefited hugely before the Olympics, experts have said the 17-day sporting spectacle had not delivered significant financial rewards and neither was it expected to in the months and years ahead.

Mary Rance, chief executive of tourism body UKinbound, said the Olympics which have cost British taxpayers £9.3 billion ($14.5 billion) to stage have failed to lift her sector.

“From a positive perspective, the Olympics have been a catalyst for huge investment in infra-structure in London,” Rance told AFP.

But she added: “All the signs are that the Olympics have not delivered additional visitors to London and the UK. In fact, it is expected that numbers may well end up having fallen by well over 30 percent.”

Following claims in the first few days of the Games that they had turned London into a ghost town, British Prime Minister David Cameron urged people to “come back into the capital”.

And his words seem to have made an impact, with retailers across London’s main shopping district in and around Oxford Street reporting an increase in sales and a higher footfall in the days after Cameron’s remarks.

In the run-up to the Olympics, which began on July 27, commuters and tourists were warned to stay away amid fears that London’s transport sys-tem could not cope with millions of extra people descending on the capital.

The Games had long been heralded as a key boost to the British economy but industry body the European Tour Operators Association said tourist numbers had fallen “dramatically” in the first few days of the Games.

“Hotels have been cutting their prices and many shopping areas, restaurants, theatres, attractions and entertainment venues have seen a significant reduction in business,” added Rance.

“Although it must be said that shopping centres like Westfield Stratford City, next to the Olympic Park, have benefited significantly -- and over re-cent days visitors seem to be returning to central London,” she added.

Businesses complained of being sidelined as tourists made a beeline for the Games and avoided

the capital’s other attractions and shopping des-tinations, while non-sports fans opted to stay at home or delay their trips.

The Bank of England’s chief economist Spencer Dale last week said the Olympics would provide only “a small positive contribution” to the British economy.

“There may well be some extra spending from tourism, but as many of us know there has also been travel disruption, more people are going on holiday. So I think those effects are small.

“But the contribution from ticket sales and TV rights may lead to a very small boost to GDP in the third quarter.”

Britain’s Office for National Statistics has already said that Olympic tickets sold last year would be incorporated into gross domestic product figures for the third quarter, despite the bulk having been paid for last year.

Asked about the long-term benefits to the economy from the Olympics, Dale said: “Those type of effects are a lot harder to try and work out and I don’t think it will have a material impact in our projections.”

Analysts have said the Games could add 0.3 percentage points to British output in the third quarter, or July to September period.

Britain escaped a deep downturn in late 2009 but fell back into recession at the end of 2011. Latest official data showed GDP slumped 0.7 percent in the second quarter from the first three months of this year. Meanwhile the nation’s coali-tion government, which has been hosting country leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Olympics, said it hoped to strike trade deals during the event.

And it believes it can generate £13 billion of business, including almost half coming from for-eign direct investment, over the next four years as a direct result of the Olympics.

But Slavena Nazarova, economist at French bank Credit Agricole, said the longer-term target was “a little exaggerated” given that Cameron had not included the greatest benefit thus far -- the boost to the construction sector as a result of transforming a disused part of east London to host much of the Games.

DENPASAR - Three Chinese professors from GuangXi Art Institute have visited the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) of Denpasar, to study possible teaching cooperation between the two arts institutes.

The three professors including President of Guangxi Art Institute China Prof Chen Kun Peng, Prof Yang Xiu Zhao and Prof Chu Zhuo met with ISI rector Prof Dr I Wayan Rai. S.MA.

ISI spokesman Nyoman Dewi Pebriyani said on Sunday the visit earlier this week was the second by leaders of the GuangXi Art Institute after one late 2010.

Prof. Chen told his counterpart Prof Wayan Rai that the Chinese and Balinese cultures have much in common.

“There are strong ties between the Chinese and Balinese arts citing a Chinese folk dance, which is well preserved in Bali,” Nyoman quoted the Chinese professor as saying.

Prof. Chen said he had studied Balinese Gong Beri which also shows ties between the Chinese and Balinese cultures.

Prof. Chen said he hopes the similarities in the two cultures need further studies for the interest of cultural science .

Cooperation could be expanded through seminars, and joint exhibitions , he was quoted as saying.

Chen also said it is also important to have exchange of students and lecturers to widen perceptions.

The three Chinese professors also visited the Latta Ma-hosadi Documentary Center of ISI which has collections of Indonesian traditional music instruments.

Dewa Nyoman Putra, a tourist observer from Bali said he also expects tourist travel to and from Denpasar to positively impact foreign tourist traffic in Bali.

With international airlines willing to diversify their flight routes to include the Ngurah Rai international air-port, the likelihood of more foreign tourists visiting Bali and other tourism destinations in Indonesia has gone up, Putra said.

The National Philippine Airlines has declared Bali as the Filipinos favorite tourism destination. It currently op-erates direct flights from Manila to Bali, twice a week on every Wednesday and Saturday and from Bali to Manila on every Thursday and Sunday.

With the commencement of its latest new flight to Bali, the Philippine Airlines now flies 26 international routes including two to Indonesia. It currently flies five times a week from Manila to Jakarta via Singapore.

Putra said similar direct flights from other ASEAN countries, especially Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand can also boost Indonesian tourism.

Data from the Bali tourism office reveals that the number of Filipino tourists visiting Bali every month has steadily increased. While 1,137 visitors came in February, 1,327 tourists flocked to Bali in March and 1,472 came in April. A total of 8,821 foreign tourists visited Bali during the January to June period.

JAKARTA - Chairman of Indo-nesian Red Cross Jusuf Kalla who recently visited Rohingya refugees in Myanmar with representative from the Organization of Islamic Coopera-tion (OIC) stated the OIC will build 8,000 houses for the refugees resid-ing in Rakhine county.

According to a press release from the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) re-ceived on Sunday, Kalla said the new houses for refugees in Rakhine coun-ty are located in new area prepared by the Myanmar government.

“During visit in Myanmar, the lo-cal government positively welcomes me and my colleagues’ ideas to help the Rohingya refugees,” Kalla said.

Kalla visited Myanmar last Friday

The visit was a follow up from a meeting between NGOs from 20 member states of the OIC in Kuala Lumpur last August 3. The meeting requested Indonesian Red Cross and the OIC to meet with Myanmar government and persuade it to open humanitarian aid’s access to Rakhine county.

“To maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea and in the region, China is willing to work with Indonesia,” Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said in Jakarta.

He also said China was prepared to work “on the basis of consensus toward the eventual adoption of the code of conduct”.

Foreign ministers of the Asso-ciation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) failed to move ahead on the

issue at a regional ministers’ meeting in Phnom Penh in July. The dispute prevented ASEAN from producing a joint communique for the first time in the bloc’s 45-year history.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa has since pushed for implementation of the long-stalled code of conduct, designed to reduce tensions over fishing, ship-ping rights and oil and gas explora-tion in the sea.

“The very difficult issue of the South China Sea requires countries in the region, ASEAN and China to work closely,” Natalegawa said.

“Having met the Chinese foreign minister, I’m assured that diplomacy is still on track.”

China claims sovereignty over al-most all of the resource-rich sea, which is home to vital shipping lanes, but the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei have overlapping claims.

has died of bird flu, the health min-istry said Saturday, in the country’s ninth fatal case this year.

“The deceased was a self-em-ployed 37-year-old male,” accord-ing to the report on the ministry’s website.

The man was hospitalised on July 24 with a high fever and was placed on a ventilator five days later, according to the report. He died on July 30.

Authorities do not know how the man contracted the virus, but said he lived near poultry farms.

Indonesia has been hardest-hit by bird flu, with 159 fatalities

reported since 2003 out of 359 worldwide, according to World Health Organization figures, which include the latest death.

Bird flu, also known as the H5N1 virus, typically spreads from birds to humans through direct contact, but experts fear it could mutate into a form that is easily transmissible between humans.

AntaraJAKARTA - Police will deploy more than 88,000 personnel across the

country to secure the Idul Fitri festivities this year, National Police Chief General Timur Pradopo said.

“The personnel are part of the team code-named Operasi Ketupat. The team will work from August 10 to 26, 2012,” he said during a roll call at the National Monument (Monas) square here on Friday.

He noted that criminal disturbances that frequently occurred during Idul Fitri festivities were motorcycle thefts, thefts at vacant homes and thefts ac-companied by violence.

“The other criminal disturbances for which we must be watchful during the Idul Fitri festivities are acts of anarchic and terror,” he said.

Based on the level of susceptibility to criminal offenses, he said provincial police were divided into first priority and second priority.

“The first priority covers provincial police in Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, South Sumatra, South Sulawesi, Yogyakarta, Lampung and Banten. while the rest belongs to the second priority,” he said.

In conducting the operation, the police will cooperate with a number of related agencies including the transport ministry, insurance company Jasa Raharja and regional governments, he said.

Taking advantage of the large number of foreign officials gathered in London for the Olympic Games, Cameron was to urge international action to save 25 million children from stunted growth over the next four years.

The “hunger summit” at Down-ing Street is being co-hosted by Vice President Michel Temer of Brazil, which will host the next Summer Olympics at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Olympians including Ethio-pian 10,000 metres gold medallist Tirunesh Dibaba and British long jump winner Greg Rutherford have signed an open letter urging Cam-eron to “fire the starting gun on the biggest ever push against hunger and malnutrition”.

“With world leaders gathered in London and the eyes of billions fo-cused on Britain, the Olympics is an incredible opportunity to change the destiny of millions of children round the world,” the letter said.

“As athletes, we know how es-sential nutritious food is for people to flourish physically and mentally.

“Despite an abundance of food worldwide, one person in seven goes to bed hungry every night and it is children who are often hit hardest.”

Cameron was set to pledge £120 million on Sunday for research into drought-resistant and vitamin-en-hanced crops for Africa and South Asia.

“The figures are shocking,” Cameron was expected to say at the conference.

“One in three child deaths are linked to malnutrition. And 171 mil-lion children are so malnourished by the age of two that they can never physically recover.

“Even if malnourished children are able to fight off sickness and infection in their earliest years, their bodies and minds never fully develop,” he added.

“It is a tragedy for them, and it’s

a tragedy for their societies they live in. Children who could grow up to become doctors, farmers, engineers and entrepreneurs or great Olympi-ans are left far behind.”

Cameron was also due to announce British funding for a joint programme with Switzerland and Ireland helping people in developing countries to hold officials to account over food aid.

Another programme in Kenya will support a mobile texting scheme to allow early warning of “hunger hotspots”, so that food supplies can be delivered more quickly, Downing Street added.

World sport stars including Ethio-pian runner Haile Gebrselassie and Brazilian footballer Pele were due to attend the summit, along with minis-ters and international organisations.

The conference comes ahead of the closing ceremony for the London Olympics on Sunday, which will see the Olympic flame extinguished capital and organisers hand over to the Rio 2016 team.

MADRID — Officials said Saturday that a wildfire thought to be under control on a Spanish island is now spreading, threatening a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Regional agriculture spokeswoman Nancy Melo said flames on the Canary Island of La Gomera were encroaching on Garajonay National Park, which contains forests “of incalculable ecological value.”

The government of the Canary Islands said in a Friday night statement that the fire had now intensified, and another blaze had started on the neighboring island of Tenerife, with some 400 residents evacuated from the island’s west.

Melo said the fire had begun a week ago, and had almost been extinguished, with “aircraft used to fight the blaze being sent to other islands.”

Garajonay — a very rare example of the type of humid sub-tropical forest that covered almost all of Europe before the arrival of humans — was declared a national park in 1981 and a World Heritage Site in 1986.

Melo said some of the wooded land had been in existence for 11 million years, and belonged to a bygone geological period called the Tertiary age, which began 65 million years ago.

Elsewhere, firefighters in Ourense in Spain’s northwest were joined Saturday by 17 water-carrying aircraft to battle a blaze.

Taipei’s Songshan airport was briefly closed after its sole runway was hit by lightning, delaying 25 flights, according to an official.

The strike Saturday afternoon

left a hole some 70 centimetres (28 inches) long and 50 centimetres wide. Authorities closed the trans-port hub for just under two hours after being alerted to the damage by an airport worker.

“Twenty-five flights to and from

the airport, 20 of them on domestic routes, were delayed before the damage was fixed at 8:10 pm (1210 GMT),” a Civil Aeronautics Ad-ministration official told AFP.

Around 3,500 passengers were affected, he said.

The analysis also found the greatest influence comes not from knowing the surroundings, eating familiar food, speaking the same language or not having to travel, but from the roar of the crowd. British athletes right across the spectrum, from teenage newcomer and taekwondo fighter Jade Jones to the multi-gold medal winning cyclist Chris Hoy, have credited the thunderous crowds with at least some of their success in London.

Cyclist Victoria Pendleton, who won gold and silver medals in a velodrome rocking with roars of support, described how it had a “massive effect” on her performance. “You’re so lifted by the noise. It carries you. It really does inspire you,” she said.

Fellow gold-medal-winning cyclist Laura Trott, agreed: “I just got going and the crowd just drove me home.”

ALL IN THE MIND?So is it all in the mind? Well yes, and no. “It’s complicated,”

says Nick Maguire, a senior lecturer in clinical psychology at Britain’s University of Southampton. “It’s psycho-physiological, rather than purely psychological or purely physiological.”

He points out that the mind can be extremely powerful - and its response can trigger real physiological changes when it interprets the crowd’s vocal support.

While the descriptions of athletes of being “lifted” or “carried” by the crowd cannot be taken literally, they do describe real ef-fects. The physiological changes stem largely from the sheer noise generated by a large crowd.

This can result in a high degree of arousal or excitement, Magu-ire said, which in turn increases the production of adrenaline, the hormone produced at times of “fight or flight” that can sometimes enable people to do extraordinary things.

“It’s how you think about that noise which is the key factor. It could have either an excitatory or an anxiety-provoking effect on you,” Maguire said.

This monument was built to remind us of a terrible incident, namely the bomb blast in Kuta Bali on Saturday night October 12, 2002 on Jalan Legian Kuta. It caused death toll as many as 202 people from 22 countries and 324 people suffered from serious injuries and wounds.

Such very powerful bomb blast also caused damage to buildings and vehicles within a radius of one kilometer. Since the tragedy, tourism industry as the backbone of Bali’s

economy suffered the most serious slump in the history, but thanks to the persistence of the whole society and government, now slowly but surely it has now undergone at restoration.

The monument itself was established in the former area of explosion (Ground Zero). Most prominent part of the monument is Kayonan with a large white wooden leaf symbolizing the universe and its contents. At the bottom of this kayonan, there are inscription of ̀ victims’ name list that died in the incident and their nationality.

“Ibrahimovic turned in a fantastic shift,” said former Milan and Chelsea boss Ancelotti - who nonetheless lamented the loss of two points on home turf.

“It’s a bad point as we had no bal-ance in the first half - the second half we were better and showed character. We have to work better as a unit,” Ancelotti concluded.

Much is expected from PSG after they invested more than 100 million euros - including 20 million in former AC Milan favourite Ibrahimovic - in a bid to use a seemingly bottomless pit of cash provided by their Qatari investors to propel themselves to a first league title in 19 years.

But it was fortunate the Swedish striker came up trumps in the second half after an early Maxwell own goal and a Jeremy Aladiere effort on the stroke of half-time had put Lorient, who only just avoided the drop last term, into a 2-0 lead at the break.

Thereafter, the hosts rallied and Ibrahimovic quickly found his shoot-ing boots - his first effort involved an exquisite chest trap to reduce the arrears - to save a point.

“It’s just the first match with a new team,” said Ibrahimovic, who has only had a week and a half to get to know his new teammates.

“There’s still plenty of time to get better organised and do well.”

In letting slip two points PSG fol-lowed the nervy example of reigning champions Montpellier, who fluffed their own opening day lines as they were only able to manage a 1-1 draw at home to nine-man Toulouse on Friday.

Rene Girard’s hosts lifted their first ever league title in May but then lost their league top scorer Olivier Giroud to Arsenal pre-season and the result was a relative lack of sharpness which saw them pay the price of two dropped points.

Nigerian striker John Utaka sent

Souleymane Camara clear for the hosts in the 34th minute and he clipped home - but instead of capitalising Montpel-lier found themselves pegged back 18 minutes from time when Wissam Ben Yedder headed home from a cross by Serge Aurier.

Toulouse were left hanging on grimly after they had Adrien Regattin and Serge Aurier sent off late on.

Montpellier had themselves played for almost an hour a man short after Tunisian star Jamel Saihi was red-carded for a foul on Francois Sirieix six minutes before the break.

“It’s a point - a bit of a shame to finish with ten men,” said a pensive Girard.

“It’s a rather timid return (to league action).”

Elsewhere, Yoann Gourcuff was on target as Lyon won 1-0 at Rennes while Bordeaux also won on their travels - 3-2 at modest Evian.

And 2011 champions Lille won 2-1 at former giants Saint Etienne courtesy of goals from Aurelien Chedjou and Benoit Pedretti.

TORONTO - Defending champion Novak Djok-ovic and Frenchman Richard Gasquet advanced to the final of the Toronto Masters after each secured routine victories under threatening skies on Satur-day. Top-seeded Djokovic, seeking his third title in the event in five years, booked his spot in Sunday’s title showdown with a 6-4 6-1 win over fellow Ser-bian Janko Tipsarevic in a match that started two hours late because of rain.

Djokovic had moved 3-2 ahead in the opening set of the semi-final before rain, which has wreaked havoc on this week’s schedule and forced some play-ers to play twice in one day, forced the pair off the court. When they returned about 90 minutes later, Djokovic was never pressured, breaking Tipsarevic’s serve three times and holding serve throughout the one hour, 45 minute match.

Djokovic will go into Sunday’s final with a 6-1 head-to-head record against Gasquet and has won all four meetings since losing to the Frenchman at the 2007 Tennis Masters Cup in China. Gasquet, the tournament’s 14th seed, beat a higher-ranked opponent for the second time in three matches when he stunned big-serving American eighth-seed John Isner 7-6 6-3.

The Frenchman, who beat fourth-seed Tomas Berdych in the last 16 but needed three sets to elimi-nate American Mardy Fish in the quarter-finals, was in solid form against Isner showed little fear of his opponent’s powerful serve.

The 21-year-old fired down four aces to Isner’s five but held his serve throughout the match and did not even allow the American a glimpse of a break point as he won 87 percent of his service points.

Ferrari technical boss Pat Fry has admitted that weather conditions have played a part in allowing Fernando Alonso to lead the world championship by 40 points. While Ferrari has made remarkable progress with the F2012, allowing Alonso to win three races, Fry admits that the team still needs to find more pace in the dry.

Alonso’s wins in Malaysia and Germany were assisted by rain in the race and qualifying respectively, with only his European Grand Prix victory taken in all-dry conditions. The Spaniard’s fifth place after dry conditions in both qualifying and the race in Hungary before the August break is a more accurate indicator of form.

“Obviously, if it had been a completely dry race in Malaysia, it would have been a different story,” Fry told AUTOSPORT. “I don’t think we can hide behind the fact that the weather has helped us out.

“Do I think we’re the quickest in a dry qualifying? I don’t think we are now, but in the last two wet sessions [Silverstone and Hockenheim, where Alonso took both poles] it has been more impressive.”

Fry, who believes that the F2012 has improved by something in the order of 1.5 seconds since the start of the campaign, puts the time deficit in the dry at several tenths at the minimum.

He has regularly underlined the need for Ferrari to make further progress in developing the car, with upgrades expected for the Belgian Grand Prix after the break, but emphasised that the team’s ability to capitalise in wet conditions is not down to luck.

“We just need to keep working at it,” he said. “We’re fortu-nate to be where we are - some of that is luck with the weather but then everyone’s got those conditions. They’ve got to go and make the most of it. “Yes, we were helped by the weather, but then why didn’t other people take advantage of it?”

Mexico’s green, white and red flag as he celebrated with his family in a restaurant in the capital. Hun-dreds danced and shouted “Viva Mexico” around the Angel of the Independence monument in the center of Mexico City.

“Now this is worth celebrating. It is historic and unforgettable,” said Marisela Mendoza, 30, with her three children in tow. “This was against Brazil, and that gives it so much more merit.”

Mexico’s rivalry with five-time World Cup winners Brazil goes beyond the soccer pitch. The two countries compete for foreign investment and have leapfrogged each other as Latin America’s big-gest economy in recent decades, with Brazil moving back on top in 2005.

Mexico’s previous best Olym-pic performance was a fourth place finish at the 1968 Mexico Games and their best World Cup performances were in the two World Cups they hosted in 1970 and 1986, when they reached the quarter-finals.

But a new generation of play-ers have been making their mark with Mexico’s win earlier this year at the Toulon Tournament and a

string of victories in 2011, in-cluding the Pan American Games championship and Mexico’s sec-ond Under-17 World Cup title. Mexico’s gold medal in London could not have come at a better time for the country, which is in the middle of a bloody crackdown on drug cartels and still reeling from a polarising presidential election in July.

“Hopefully it unites us and we stop fighting,” Mora said. Mario Juarez, 25, looked to more sport-ing success.

“We hope this winning streak continues and holds up for the World Cup,” he said, joining the party at the Angel of Indepen-dence with his dog dressed in a Mexican flag.

L O N D O N - The United States extended their long reign

When Britain’s Mo Farah became only the seventh man to achieve the 5,000-10,000m Olympic double on Saturday, i t completed a remarkable journey which began in war-torn Somalia. With victory in the 5,000m Farah, who came to England aged eight after spend-ing his early years in Djibouti, can be counted among the ath-letics greats.

But now the engaging 28-year-old runner, who ended African dominance in both dis-tance races, will have to make up for the time he has had to spend away from his wife Tania, who is due to give birth to twin girls. No guessing then what they will have dangling above their cots -- and it was with some relief that the medals will be both of the same colour.

“Those medals are for my girls, they are not born yet,” said Farah, a Muslim, who was so focused on winning he opted not to observe Ramadan. “It could be any day. The doc-tors say we have 12 days, but I did not want to leave one out, because they are twins.”

Farah, though, would prob-ably not have made it to the top of the podium twice had it not been for the unconditional sup-port of his wife, who in a rare foray into the spotlight went onto the track with daughter Rihanna last Saturday and hugged him.

“She is carrying twins, it has not been easy because I didn’t want to know,” said Farah, who became the first British male athlete to win a world distance title when he landed the 5,000m

in Daegu last year. “She said she wouldn’t let me know if anything happened.”

It is questionable whether Farah would have got this far but for two major influences on his life once he was in England -- his school sports teacher Alan Watkinson, and British great Paula Radcliffe.

Understandably speaking little English on his arrival in England -- his family came because his English-born father lived and worked in the country -- Farah had a hard introduction on his first day at school. He made the mistake of using one of the few phrases he knew, “C’mon then”, to the toughest guy in his class. “He twatted me,” he told The Independent newspaper, using the slang phrase for being punched.

LONDON - After years of grueling training, two Egyptian wrestlers crashed out of the Olym-pics without breaking sweat on Sunday after they were late for the start of their competition. The pair were disqualified after they arrived late at the wrestling arena on the last day of the Games.

Sunday’s bouts started at an earlier 3.30 a.m. EDT - rather than the usual 8 a.m. EDT - because the competition must end before the closing ceremony of the London Olympics later in the day. It was a sad end to the Games for Abdou Omar Abdou Ahmed, 23, who competes in the 66kg freestyle, and Saleh Emara, 30, a 96kg wrestler. “They thought they were wrestling at 1 p.m. (8 a.m. EDT) like normal but because of the closing ceremony they changed the timing to 8.30 a.m. and the team

didn’t know about it,” an Egyptian team spokesman said. “It was in the booklet but they didn’t see it and because of that they were a little bit late.

“We know it is our mistake. We are investigating the matter now. We are calling the administrator to see who is responsible. They should have known.” All the other wrestlers competing for the last two medals turned up on time, a venue spokeswoman said.

The sport’s governing body said there was nothing it could do to help the pair. “We did everything possible to give them all the information they need but it is up to the coach and the country’s delegation to make sure their people know all the details,” said a spokesman for FILA, the In-ternational Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles. “I am sorry that they could not take part but if they don’t come to the venue on time, they can’t take part.”

MEXICO CITY - Mexicans poured into public plazas around the country to celebrate their first major international soccer success after a 2-1 upset in the 2012 Olympic final over hot favourites Brazil, Latin America’s soccer powerhouse. Long used to disappointment on the soc-cer field, Mexico had been aching for a major title after watching a new generation of players clinch victory after victory in less prestigious tournaments.

3 for 3: Bolt breaks relay record, gets more goldI need to do to prove myself as a legend?”

After the win, he held up three fingers, one for each of his golds.

He is now 6 for 6 in Olympic fi-nals over his career — breaking four world records in the process, includ-ing three in Beijing in 2008.

Bolt also heads home with an extra souvenir.

After winning Saturday, he plead-ed with an official to let him keep the yellow baton he was clutching. Told he’d be disqualified if he didn’t hand it over, Bolt complied, and some nearby spectators booed. About 40 minutes later, that same official ap-proached Bolt and returned the stick. Bolt responded with a bow of thanks and a chuckle, kissed the baton — and then asked his teammates to autograph it.

One more possession to help him remember his performances at 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium, where any mention of Bolt’s name drew raucous cheers, countless camera flashes and chants of “Usain!” or “We want Bolt!”

He reiterated that this could be it for him on track and field’s biggest stage. Bolt turns 26 on Aug. 21, and refuses to commit to showing up at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“It’s going to be hard to really do that. I’ve done all I want to do,” said Bolt, noting that he planned to go out

on the town Saturday night. “I’ve got no more goals.”

Bolt also earned medals in the 100 in 9.63 seconds last Sunday — the second-fastest time in history — and the 200 in 19.32 on Thursday. The runner-up in both individual sprints, Bolt’s pal and training partner Yohan Blake, ran the third leg of the relay, following Nesta Carter and Michael Frater.

old record that Bolt helped set at last year’s world championships. Trinidad & Tobago took the bronze in 38.12. Canada, which was third across the line, was disqualified for running outside its lane, and its appeal was rejected.

As Blake and Gay rounded the race’s final curve, they were pretty much in sync, stride for stride.

When that duo was done, the relay came down to Bolt vs. Bailey, who was fifth in the 100 meters in 9.88. Not exactly a fair matchup. “It was over from there,” Blake said.

Basketball-U.S. win women’s gold over Francein Olympic women’s basketball by claiming their fifth successive gold medal with an 86-50 rout of France at the London Games on Saturday. With Candace Parker leading the way, the Americans extended their Olympic

winning streak to 41 games dating back 20 years to their bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

“We know how hard we have to work to make it look easy,” said U.S. coach Geno Auriemma, whose team went 8-0 with an average victory margin of more than 34 points a game. “We take great pride in our basketball programme. The expectation is to win and we take it very seriously.”

The U.S. used a 9-0 run to build a 12-point halftime lead and then blew the game open by scoring a remarkable 19 unanswered points in the third quarter to lead by 30. France, who were playing in their first women’s Olympic basketball final, took the silver medal, while Australia earlier claimed the bronze with an 83-74 victory over Russia.

The French kept it close in the first quarter of the final, trailing 20-15 going into the second quarter after holding an early 13-11 lead. Sparked by Parker, who scored off offensive rebounds and at the front of fast breaks in totalling 11 points in the second quarter, the Ameri-cans went into intermission with a 37-25 lead.

With Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul of the U.S. men’s team cheer-ing them on, the U.S. women came out after the break and applied full court pressure, which rattled France and sparked the massive 19-point run that padded the lead to 62-32 as

the European side went nearly six minutes without scoring.

Parker scored 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the U.S. attack, while Sandrine Gruda and Edwige Lawson-Wade scored 12 points each for France. “This has been a dream of mine since I laid on the couch and watched (the U.S. team) in 1996,” said Parker, who had struggled with inconsistency in the tournament. “Everybody has their moment.

“It was just mindset. Playing to win, not to not lose. Just going out there giving it your all and living with the result. That is my biggest hangup mentally, going out there and being hesitant.” U.S. captain Sue Bird added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and Diana Taurasi scored nine points and handed out six as-sists.

French coach Pierre Vincent said his team, which went 7-0 to reach the final, learned a lot from the masterclass they received from the U.S. team in the gold game. “They are quicker, more skilled. They have more knowledge on offence and defence,” he said.

“I think my team is exhausted and we play with our limits. They show us the way to go to improve ourselves and come back to the next Olympics, and I hope to play them again in the next Olympics.”

“A wonderful end to a wonder-ful week,” Bolt said. “What else do

Mexico’s Oribe Peralta celebrates his second goal during the men’s soccer final against Brazil at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, in London.

Mexico revels in taking gold over rival BrazilReuters

Agence France-Presse JAKARTA - An Indonesian man

has died of bird flu, the health min-istry said Saturday, in the country’s ninth fatal case this year.

British economy struggles to secure golden Olympics boost

Agence France-Presse LONDON - With the London Olympics set to wrap up Sunday, analysts said Britain’s

recession-hit economy was unlikely to have won a major boost from the Games that have been a triumph for the nation’s athletes.

In other hand visitors think this regulation is not helping. According to one visitor, Astawa, admitted that the space is so nar-row it was easily filled which so there are no more space to park. Yet one parking worker denied that it is always full as they al-ways try to create spaces for all to park. “Many have complained but it’s because they’re not both-ered to park a bit further from the entrance place when actually there’s enough space inside it,” the worker stated.

Was it dirt on the camera lens or a spinning dust devil? It turned out Curiosity spotted the aftermath of its rocket-powered backpack crash-landing in the distance.

By comparing these strains with those described from studies in Japan, the team found Brazil-ian chytrid had made its way to Japan.

(kmb15)

On the contrary, people’s aspirations had to be heard by all regency and provincial governments. According to him, Bali needed a variety of improvements to be better, from human resources to the economic environment. (kmb30)

Chairman of the GIPI Bali, Ngu-rah Wijaya, said in Denpasar. The data related to the amount of ac-commodation such as hotels, villas, lodging and the number of rooms available were not accurate. Such condition would have an impact on the tourism development plan

in the future.“It’s very ironic how Bali can

determine the master plan of tour-ism development in the future if the existing data are still different and invalid. Ideally, we have accurate tourism data, so that they can be used as a foundation to build the

Bali tourism in short, medium and long term,” he said.

He said his party would meet the Agency for Bali Regional Develop-ment, Central Statistics Agency of Bali, Center for Cultural and Tourism Research of the Udayana University and Representative of Bank Indonesia for Bali-Nusra Region III. This effort was intended to synchronize the statistical data of Bali tourism so that all parties would have the same perception in developing the tourism in the future.

“Next Tuesday (Aug 14), we will meet the policy-holders in the

field of statistics to know the exact data about the statistics of Bali tourism. So far, we have not known whether the hotel rooms are still required or the number has been excessive,” he said.

Other than validity of the tour-ism statistical data, Ngurah Wijaya also highlighted the tourism devel-opment in Bali had changed its role into a real estate. This condition was inseparable from the popularity of Bali in the world, so that every-one wanted to have it.

“This shift will be harmful to Bali. We will get nothing because the real estate is the sale of property.

To that end, my suggestion is that provincial and regency government should make a temporary morato-rium,” he said.

(kmb27)

Lesson for Rio: Prepare the minds to exploit home crowdReuters

LONDON - If the wall of noise from an Olympic home crowd were a banned substance, Team GB would have been kicked out of the London Games on day one. Judging by the host nation’s record haul of 62 medals, 28 of them gold as it stands, its per-formance enhancing properties are quite something.

But dig deeper into the science behind home advantage and the research shows it is not as simple as just having tens of thousands of eager supporters screaming their heads off for their national Olympians to win. If Brazil wants to reap the same performance boost from an enthusiastic home crowd in Rio 2016, its coaches and athletes and people must first prepare their minds for success.

“People’s notions of efficacy are extremely important in per-formance,” said Stephen Reicher, a professor of psychology at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. “So partly it comes down to your own beliefs.” “If you believe ‘I can’t make it’ and everyone out there is expecting you to make it, then that has a negative effect. But if you believe ‘I have a chance’, then a supportive crowd can be very positive.”

“IT CARRIES YOU” In an analysis of home advantage published in the Journal of Sport Science last year, sports scientists found host nation advantage does show up in the final medal tables. Home teams win around three times more medals at their nation’s Games than when they are away, the researchers found.

GIPI questions validity of statistical data on Bali tourism Bali Post

DENPASAR - The Indonesia Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) of Bali questioned about the validity of statistical data on Bali tourism. So far, the data held by relevant agencies in the regency/municipality on the Island of the Gods were still overlapping.
