Hey Kiwis!

My first time at Fall Rally was so amazing, and I definitely have each and every one of you to thank for being part of my experience. I’ve also noticed profile and cover photo changes on Facebook, which is a great way to spread awareness! Kudos to all of you! It’s time to get those dues in for Early Bird awards (Deadline: December 1st). Make sure you don’t procrastinate, and as always, I’m positive that your clubs will be exhibit excellence! Keep up the great work J

Wanted Division Judging Committee to judge division awards. Must be a non-board member, and able to meet on weekends in January. Division Awards

Member of the Year: This contest recognizes one MEMBER per division who has served his or her club, division, and district diligently throughout the year

Club of the Year: This contest recognizes one club per division for overall excellence

Most Improved Club: This contest recognizes one club that has improved dramatically over the past year

Kiwanis/Faculty Advisor of the Year: These contests recognize one Kiwanis advisor and one faculty advisor per division who have gone ABOVE and beyond in SERVING their clubs.

*Applicants must submit E-portfolio in January (exact date TBA) *Winners will be recognized on stage at DCON

Spicing Up Meetings by Jenny Wu, Albany HS

Meetings can be pretty mundane, especially when you're asked to skip lunch to attend. Luckily, April Ngo, Albany High School's Key Club president, tried to make these weekly gatherings as fun as possible, while encouraging members to learn the club.

By motiving members with leftover Halloween candy, April made sure the members memorized the Key Club pledge and even tested them on event details. At first, the members were shy; none volenteered to answer the questions April posed. However, after a couple questions, more and more people started raising their hand. Candy was tossed across the room as members competed to answer the questions.

After the successful meeting, April started brainstorming on how the meetings could be even more entertaining, to keep the new members interested in the club. She wanted to play a laughter- filled game and have the prize be a Key Club sweater.

April wanted to play hands-on-deck, an enjoyable ice-breaker she was sure would encage the members. Unfortunatly, she didn't remember the specific instuctions, so she invented new ones- Harry Potter themed! As predicted, the Key Club members loved it. I wonder how April will make next month's Key Club meeting fun.

MEP stands for Major Emphasis Program, which serves as Kiwanis International’s main theme,

Volunteered with children? That’s an MEP project. How about with UNICEF, Children’s Miracle Network, or March of Dimes? Our service partners are part of the MEP effort too. Key Club International has contributed millions of dollars, and over 12 million hours of service supporting organizations and children around the world.

To run, you will be required to attend Conclave, present a speech there, and go through caucus sessions. Let me know if you want to run, so you can complete the required forms. Want to learn more? Contact me!

Some duties of an LTG:

submit division MRFs, plan/host DCMs, attend KC/Kiwanis meetings, host training conferences, attend overnight training conferences, assist any members in need of help, etc.

As I made my way down the steps in the Oakland Museum of California, I could already smell the refreshing aroma of incense, driving me towards the Gardens, where the event would be taking place. On October 21, OMCA held their annual Day of the Dead Celebration to honor the dead. Before attendees arrived, all of the volunteers and people involved in the event gathered in a circle. A volunteer coordinator talked about the significance of the day and people came around the circle with the incense. The purpose of this was to cleanse us of our worries and to focus on having fun and to honor the lives of those who have passed away.

Most of the Key Club members volunteering that day were involved with the hands-on arts and crafts. We helped kids create rattles made of paper 'calacas,' or skeleton figures. First, kids colored the skeletons and then volunteers helped them attach a stick and a pocket filled with beans to make the dolls rattle. At times, it became hectic, but the Key Clubbers had a wonderful time working with kids and being exposed to the vibrant Spanish culture.
