The Executive Committee of the Society (2014-2016) has confirmed its term of office on 26 April 2014. Being the Chairperson, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the members of the Executive Committee who were so committed to achieving the mission of the Society in 2012-14. The Society will continue excel in nursing education and promoting the highest standards of nursing practice. The Society believes the importance of quality primary nursing education and nursing specialization at post-graduate level and thus adhere to the mission of achieving excellence in nursing service through the enhancement of quality education. In the past year, the Society has prioritized our efforts into encouraging exchange among nurses and students, and in particular, has strived in enhancing the quality of care and patient safety. Activities related to enhancing patient safety has been reported in the last newsletter and in this present issue. The Society also actively involves in matters relating to the development of nursing, nursing education and the quality of health services in Hong Kong. For example, the Society has actively provided suggestions on legislation, regulatory and supervisory structures of governing qualifications and conducts of the nursing and midwifery professions. We also recognize the importance of an effective health care delivery system for the promotion and maintenance of health of the community. We respond actively to the recent HA consultation exercise with regard to human resources issues and the future employment mode of nurses in Hospital Authority. It is hoped that with these active participations in government and other health organization consultation exercises, the quality of care could be enhanced in the future health care delivery model. With the will to participate actively in health education and health promotion activities, the Society has jointly organized with Hong Kong College of Education and Research in Nursing (HKCERN) a series of talks in nursing research and MCQ writing workshops. We have also continued our collaboration with the Federation of Medical Societies of Hong Kong (FMSHK) in organizing and co- organizing educational activities to nurses and other health professionals.

Activities' Highlights:

12 April 2014Health CarnivalHealth Carnival on World Health Day 2014 was held on 12 April 2014 at Tin Hau Temple Feng Shui Square at Tai Po. It wasorganized by Provisional Hong Kong Academy of Nursing together with all Academy colleges. The theme for this year was"Vector-borne diseases - Small creatures, Big threat".

25 April 2014Interview by Radio & Television Hong Kong (RTHK)As one of the activities to celebrate the International NursesDay 2014, Dr. MAK Yim-wah and two nurse experts, Ms.Susan LAU (Nurse Consultant) & Ms. LAW Wan-po(Advanced Practice Nurse) were interviewed by Mr. SIUKwok-wa ( ) & Ms. TANG Yuen-kwan ( ),the hosts of a radio programme at RTHK on25 April. During the programme, they had shared in theair about the nurse education in Hong Kong, the entryrequirements of a nurse and attributes of an advancedpractice nurse.

The Society has also worked closely with other nursingassociations such as Upsilon Eta Chapter and Pi Iota Chapterof Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society on Nursing,and Macao Sino-Portuguese Nurses Association on activitiesin enhancing exchanges among nurses.

The Society has also participated in various health promotionactivities, for example, the World Health Day activities, afund raising activities in support of the establishment ofHKAN, of which the aim is to explain nursing roles andresponsibilities via participating media interview.

With the coming of the 30th anniversary, the Society hasyet great challenges to face. At present, there is a shortage

of nursing personnel in Hong Kong, especially in the privateand community sectors. The challenges include meeting theneeds of the nursing personnel, ensuring the quality ofcontinue nursing education and the quality of care and, lastbut not least, the manpower issues and the establishment ofthe Hong Kong Academy of Nursing. With the newly electedExecutive Committee for the year 2014-16, the Society ismoving forward with a young and vibrant spirit. We firmlybelieve that, with a clear vision, commitment and concertedefforts of the nursing colleagues, the Society will rise tomeet these challenges.

With this newsletter, I would like to wish you and yourfamily a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2015!

26 April 201428th Annual General Meeting & SymposiumThe 28th Anniversary Annual General Meeting cum Symposium was successfully held on 26 April 2014. Echoed with thefruitful discussion on enhancing patient safety through nursing education in the Society's 27th Symposium, the Societywould like to continue to reinforce the issue of patient safety in difference aspects of the health care service. Thus thetheme for this year was "Enhancing patient safety through good quality of services". The Society was honoured to haveDr. LEONG Che-hung, the Society's Patron to kick off the symposium by giving the opening speech. Four renownedspeakers had been invited to share their views on the patient safety from their perspectives namely: Dr. KO Wing-man, theSecretary for Food and Health Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Dr. LUI Siu-fai, ClinicalProfessional Consultant, Division of Health System, Policy and Management. JC School of Public Health & Primary Care,The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Mr. LAM Chi-yau, the Vice-Chairman of Hong Kong Alliance of Patients'Organizations; Mr. TSANG Kam-wing, Edwin, Nurse Specialist (Geriatrics), TWGHs Fung Yiu King Hospital andMr. Vincent PAU, the nurse volunteer of Medecins Sans Frontieres. 9 May 2014International Nurses' Day DinnerThe Society had co-organised the International Nurses Day Dinner 2014 which was held at Kowloon Bay International Tradeand Exhibition Centre. This year's theme was "A Force for Change – A Vital Response for Health".

22 May 2014Meeting on "Reduction of Sodium and Sugar Intake"Dr. MAK Yim-wah and Dr. Vico CHIANG represented the Society to attend a round table meeting on "Reduction of Sodium andSugar Intake" organized by the Food and Health Bureau in May.

24-28 July 201425th International Nursing Research CongressThe Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International had organized the 25th International Nursing Research Congressin Hong Kong on 24-28 July 2014. The conference theme was "Engaging Colleagues: Improving Global Health Outcomes" andhad accepted more than 700 oral and poster presentations. Dr. MAK Yim-wah had given a talk on family structure, process offamily life, communication patterns and prevalence of smoking, alcohol and illicit drug use among primary children in theconference.

17 August 2014First Singapore-Hong Kong Congress on Innovation in Nursing PracticeThe Society had co-organised "The First Singapore-Hong Kong Congress on Innovation in Nursing Practice" with SigmaTheta Tau Honor Society of Nursing (Upsilon Eta Chapter and Pi-Iota Chapter) and Singapore General Hospital. Thecongress was held on 17 August 2014 in Singapore. Speakers include nursing professors, nursing Leaders, AdvancedPractice Nurses and nursing educators from Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Dr. Sylvia FUNG, the Vice-President ofThe Provisional Hong Kong Academy of Nursing had delivered a keynote speech on the impact of hospital organisation onnursing leadership. Nursing academics from Hong Kong like Professor Claudia LAI, Dr. Regina LI and Dr. Alice WONGfrom the School of Nursing of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; nurse consultants Ms. Susan LAW and Mr. PeterLAI from the Hospital Authority as well as Professor Sally CHAN, the Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery atNewcastle University in Australia had focused on updates in nursing practice as well as the crucial aspects significant foreffective development of nursing leadership and practice.

26 September 201465th National Day Celebration DinnerThe 65th National Day Celebration Dinner wasjointly organised by the Society and other localhealth care organisations and societies and it washeld in Maxim's Palace at City Hall on 26 September2014.

10, 17, 24 October 2014Practical Wound Care CourseThe three-session Practical Wound Care Course was conducted by a nurse consultant in wound care, Mr. PANG Chak-hau.It included a theoretical lecture and two workshops. Free gifts and light refreshment were sponsored and offered toparticipants.

Congratulatory Message

Professor Angela Barron McBRIDE, the Honorary Advisor of HKSNE, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Nursing andthe University Dean Emerita of the Indiana University School of Nursing received the Honorary Doctor of Sciencedegree conferred during Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis’ commencement ceremony in May 2014.

Professor Diana LEE, the Honorary Advisor of HKSNE and the Chair Professor of School of Nursing in the ChineseUniversity of Hong Kong, was appointed as the Chairman of the Nursing Council of Hong Kong in July 2014.

29 November 2014The Fifth Macau-Hong Kong Nursing ConferenceThe Society together with Associacao Luso-Chinesa dos Enfermeiros de Macau (ALCEM), the Sino-Portuguese NursesAssociation in Macau and Macao Polytechnic Institute had co-organised the Fifth Macau-Hong Kong Nursing Conference atMacao Polytechnic Institute on 29 November 2014. The theme for this year was "Patient Safety and Nursing Quality

". Speakers from Hong Kong included Dr. LUI Siu-fai, Clinical Professional Consultant, Division of HealthSystem, Policy and Management. JC School of Public Health & Primary Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong;Mr. TSANG Kam-wing, Edwin, Nurse Specialist (Geriatrics), TWGHs Fung Yiu King Hospital; Ms. TONG Chui-mei, seniornursing officer, Prince of Wales Hospital and Ms. CHING Tai-yin, Patricia, Infection Control Nurse advisor, The Hong KongBaptist Hospital and the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital.
