Another month, another step further in our journey thus far. It’s amazing how much time has gone by and it’s even more amazing how much this division has grown. Each month, the mighty Pirate Penguins never fail to surprise and impress me. Each month, the goals I set are constantly being surpassed by both the members and the officers—we truly have come a long way. I don’t think I have ever been so proud of another group of people and it saddens me that there are only a number of months left. My mentality has gone from “8 months to go” to “only 4 more months or so” and I can honestly say that I cannot wait to see how much more we will progress in these next 4-5 months. We are in the third quarter of the Key Club year, but we have not wasted a single moment. I’m going to keep this message short and sweet, so my compliments to each and every one of you do not become overdone. I know I have said it before, but I will say it again—I am incredibly honored and privileged to serve this division. CAMS The club has been flourishing as of lately, for many of the newly recruited members are eager to volunteer their time and help out at projects. At a recent showcase at CAMS, over 55 members lent a helping hand to make the night a success, taking shifts varying from serving samples to selling school gear to promoting a silent auction. Overall, there were over 175 hours completed in one night. As the Christmas season is fast approaching, CAMS Key Club worked together with its sister club, Gardena Key Club to help make the season merrier by packaging shoeboxes for the annual Operation Christmas Child project. Wrapping the shoeboxes carefully and then placing goodies such as plush toys, pencils, paper, soap, toothbrushes, washcloths, and balls inside, the two clubs produced 48 boxes for boys and 48 boxes for girls in a combined effort. During the Thanksgiving break, CAMS Key Club will actually go to the processing warehouse in Irvine to donate these boxes and assist in processing thousands more to prepare them to be shipped to children in third-world, war-torn countries in time for Christmas.

CAMS: Member of the Month

This school year, CAMS is very excited to announce that the class of 2015 is truly committed to service, despite the fact that volunteering hours are no longer required. This shows that CAMS’ new freshmen are willing to give up their time and help others simply for self-gratification, rather than for an awards or recognition. This mindset represents the true meaning of service, and can hopefully be maintained in CAMS Key Club for many years to come. Although the class of 2015 is off to an amazing year of service as a whole, one member stands out in particular. Hyeyeon Hwang has clearly made Key Club a priority from the start, attending the most projects and putting in more service hours than any other freshmen.

One of Hyeyeon’s first projects to attend was the Gardena Heritage Festival, where CAMS Key Club helped serve food to the public. Hyeyeon has also attended two major on campus projects: Back to School Night and Taste of CAMS. At these events, Hyeyeon sold CAMS wear and served food for one of CAMS’ major fundraisers. Finally, Hyeyeon attended the Operation Christmas Child project at the Nakaoka Center. Here, CAMS and Gardena Key Clubbers packed 96 shoeboxes with toys and necessities for children in third world countries.

Hyeyeon is also gaining experience at the divisional level, as she attended this month’s Divisional Council Meeting in Hermosa Beach. Clearly, the amount of time Hyeyeon has put into Key Club so far shows that she is truly excited to serve her community. Hyeyeon’s efforts are rewarding to more than just herself; she also serves as an aspiring role model for the rest of her class and club.

Gardena Gardena Key Club has been hard at work preparing our members for Fall Rally, but we still had time to show our appreciation to our teachers and staff. On October 27th, 2011 Gardena High School had its Back-to-School Night. Every year on Gardena’s Back-to-School Night the Gardena Valley Kiwanis Club sponsors a Feed the Teachers meal. Gardena Key Clubbers arrived and helped to unload the catering trays and prepared for the arrival of teachers. Once teachers arrived they were welcomed by Gardena Key Clubbers at both entrances. Teachers got in line and were served their meals by both Key Clubber and Kiwanis members. Teachers got to enjoy a wonderful meal, since they wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to go out and get a meal before Back-to-School Night begins. Once the teachers finished their meals we went around and cleaned up for the teachers and cleaned up the area. Once Key Clubbers where finished with cleaning we went out and set up our both for Back-to-School Night. The GHS Key Club both was selling Division 19 North Bracelets and Halloween themed cupcakes for UNICEF and PTP. Our principal Mr. Mendoza came out and personally thanks both Key Clubber and Kiwanis members for their hard work and for their kindness, and showing their appreciation of the Gardena High School staff. The night ended with a performance by the Gardena Marching Band and Key Club was able to sell all 25 of the Divisional Bracelets and promote Key Club to the students and parents that attended Back-to-School Night.
