Opening Courageous Conversations

Greet politely and briefly - no fluff

• Step 1 – Name the Issue – be specific• Step 2 – Give an example and have another if needed• Step 3 – Describe how the issue makes you feel

choose specific words to describe the emotion, e.g “disappointed” not “miffed”

• Step 4 – Clarify what’s at stake if the issue isn’t resolved

• Step 5 – Say what you’d like to see happen• Step 6 – (Optional) So what do you think?

Caution - This should take no more than 2 mins
