Division 18 Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 6
Hello Division 18!
With both the school year and service year
now underway, it’s time to get down to business.
If you have not already done so, set some goals.
Whether they are something that you wish to
strive for, or something that you would like your
club to achieve, setting goals will allow you to
have a focus for the rest of the service year. This
time of the year can be extremely hectic, but
with good organization and strong
communication, I know that you will all have a
great service year. Remember that Key Club is a
service organization so get out there and serve!
Be sure that you are giving your members a
chance to better their communities through
service.
Keep in mind, November means paying
club dues, CSH Week, Key Club Week, our
Division 18 coat drive, and any other projects
that you wish to hold with your club. Also if you
have not been trained yet, I will be scheduling
an OTC with you soon.
If you should ever have any questions,
please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Yours in Caring, Service, and Friendship, Meagan Koch

Calling all club presidents, treasurers and advisors!
With the school year well underway, it is time for your club
to collect and submit your dues. Hopefully by now, your
club should have had its first meeting. If you have not
already done so, your club must collect dues from all of its
members.
For those of you who don’t know the dues breakdown, you
must collect:
-$6.50 which will go to Key Club International
-$5.50 which will go to NJ Key Club
-and your club can charge up to $5.50
meaning that your club can collect anywhere from $12.00
and $17.50, depending on the need of your club.
(for more information on why dues are collected, please
feel free to contact me, or visit njkeyclub.org)
Once you have collected the money, you or you club
treasurer should log onto www.keyclub.org and find the
membership update center. Simply update your clubs
online roster on the website and your clubs invoice will be
given to you. It will show you how many members you
have, and how much you owe. You can then print the
invoice and send it with a check for the required amount
to:
3636 Woodview Trace
Indianapolis, IN 46268
ATTN: NJ Dues
Please note that all dues must be sent in by: December
1st. However if you would like to try for the early bird dues award, they must be sent in by November 1st.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

LEADERSHIP
SERVICE
Do you have a desire to improve your leadership? Do you want to want to
make new friends with similar interests as you? What if I told you that both of
these will happen in the same weekend? This isn’t a lie; I’m talking about Key Leader Weekend! Key Leader is run by Kiwanis International with the mission of providing a “life-
changing experience that inspires young people to achieve their personal best
through service leadership.” The weekend is designed to kick-start a lifelong
process of personal leadership growth and development. The program focuses
on leadership in three communities: the local community, the state/national
community, and the global community. It is a highly esteemed program in New
Jersey and its greatness is directly related to the high remarks of our District on
the national level. This year, Key Leader will be held Friday, December 10th through Sunday, December 12th at Camp Lebanon in Lebanon New Jersey. It is open to students
grades 9-12 from any town. There are no restrictions on the number of
attendees from any school, nor do you have to be a Key Clubber to attend.
Registration is $175 for all Key Club members, which includes a $25 grant from the Kiwanis International Foundation, and $200 for any non-member.
Speak to your Lieutenant Governor about how to sign up or if you have any
questions – they’re more than ready to help! See you there!
On October 10th over 2,400 key clubbers across the state of New Jersey traveled
to our very own 6 Flags Great Adventure for this year’s Fall Rally. Starting out with
the opening session with speakers ranging from the NJ District Board to the CEO of
Children’s Specialized Hospital, Amy Mansue; the day turned out to be informative
and motivational for all. The NJ District is also proud to announce that, thanks to
the generous contributions of all fall rally attendees we collected over 1156 lbs of
school supplies for the Food Bank of New Jersey. Although we did not reach our
attendance goal of 3,000, I would like to thank James Caldwell High School,
Livingston High School, and West Essex High School for all attending this awesome
event.

On June 24th, at the Kiwanis International Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, the
Kiwanis International Board unveiled their Worldwide Service Project: The
Eliminate Project. In conjunction with UNICEF, Kiwanis International plans to
eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus by 2015.
Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) are forms of tetanus that occur either
during pregnancy or shortly after birth, and claim the lives of 60,000 babies and
30,000 mothers from 40 different countries every year. Children born with
neonatal tetanus suffer from painful convulsions and die weeks after birth.
Mothers who did not get vaccinated or undergo an unsafe birthing process are
at risk of contracting maternal tetanus during their pregnancy. This disease is
100% fatal if not treated. Fortunately, it is also 100% preventable. Merely three doses of a vaccination can immunize a person against this disease. At 60 cents per immunization, it costs
only $1.80 to save a life. Kiwanis International has set a worldwide goal of $110
million to help fight this terrible disease and to “ELIMINATE” it by 2015. With your
help, we as the Kiwanis Family can save 129 million mother and their future babies.
Just because The Eliminate Project is the Kiwanis Wordwide Service Project, does
not mean it is exclusive to Kiwanis Clubs. As Key Club members, we should help
our parent organization reach this goal, and work towards ridding this world of
one more tragic disease. For more information on this project, including videos, downloads, and more, visit

November is the March of Dimes Prematurity Awareness Month! Written By Sarah Noorani LTG Div 10
Did you know that each and every day, more than 1,400 infants in the
United States will be born prematurely? Premature birth is the biggest
killer among newborn babies. Even babies that are only a few weeks early
can still suffer from lifelong illnesses which threaten their lungs, heart and
immune system. In our country, 1 in every 8 infants is born prematurely, and
many of those births could have been prevented!
The March of Dimes is working every day to help reduce the number
of deaths of premature babies and mothers. They are working to find the
causes and cures for premature births and are working with hospitals all
over the country to better equip their Neonatal Intensive Care Units and
help save lives.
Now, what can you do to get involved? There are several things you
can do and help fight for preemies. Get your friends, club, and the entire
school together. Don’t forget to also contact your local March of Dimes
Chapter; they can help you get things started. A great thing to try is to
have a 2 Week Fundraising Plan. Every day, have a different way to spread
March of Dimes awareness and raise money. Things like a coin collection,
denim day, food sales, purple day are all great ideas and very easy to
implement. Talk to your advisors and principals about the cause and they
should be more than willing to help. Don’t forget to use the internet to help
promote your events!
All over the country more and more teens are getting together and
Partnering with March of Dimes, and you can too! You can volunteer at a
NICU in your local hospital, or holding a book and toy drive to donate to
children. The possibilities are endless once you decide to get involved and
every little bit makes a difference!
Check out all the resources available to you at marchofdimes.com,
www.marchofdimesyouth.com/files/PAMYouthToolkit.pdf, and in the
International Programs Cookbook. Good luck!

Officers Training Conferences An officers training conference (OTC) is an informal (but mandatory) gathering
of me and each member of a club’s executive board. At the OTC, I will go over,
in detail, each of your executive roles, your weekly, monthly, and annual duties,
and specifically what everyone’s job entails. (You will also receive your official
training manual). I will also update you all on Children's Specialized Hospital, Fall
Rally, and answer any questions that you all may have. It is very important to
attend an OTC, for not only will they benefit you, but they will also benefit your
club. For more information, please email me at ltgdiv18@gmail.com.
Presidents Council Meeting A Presidents Council Meeting is an informal (but mandatory) gathering of all the
club presidents in our division (James Caldwell High School, Livingston, Mount St.
Dominic, West Essex, West Orange, and Cedar Grove). At each PCM we will
discuss different service projects, updates from the NJ District, important
upcoming events, and discuss what’s going on in each others clubs. Not only
will they be held many times during the year, but one will be coming up shortly so keep on the look out.
