"on track for the fifth consecutive year of more than
17 MILLION new vehicles."
A U T O STotal automotive sales volumes dipped
slightly in the first half of 2019 but are
still on track for the fifth consecutive
year of more than 17 million new
vehicles. While 2020 volumes will
likely be lower, industry watchers say
companies continue to invest in new
products, meaning there will be multiple
opportunities to bid on new components
and systems during the year.
C O M M E R C I A L T R U C K SOrder traffic slowed for large, Class 8
commercial trucks in 2019 as many fleet
operators put new vehicles in service.
The backlog of unbuilt trucks remained
at record highs but was expected to
shrink a bit toward the end of the year.
While nobody likes to see a slowdown,
order declines will allow producers
to catch up on backlogs in 2020 and
invest in money-saving technologies.
Tougher steel alloys mandate
new forming technologies such as hot stamping and new cutting
tools.
Multi-metal vehicle bodies are the norm,
making technologies to join steel with aluminum with
composites vital.
Major launches of electric and
hybrid vehicles are pushing demand
for high-tech batteries and
cabling systems for data and
power.
