fromSALLYMOLE
SALLY MOLEDIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION
As I write this, April and I are literally counting the days until the famous Laura Lunty gets back. We have so much work to do, and have been able to count on Laura for so much support, plus we just love her positive energy that she brings so much of to our work place. Laura has brought such initiatives to our workplace as the bike to work bike rack in front of the District Offi ce, a ban on disposable coff ee cups within the departmental workplace, and a daily fl ossing challenge amongst department staff . She really inspires us and brings her big laugh to liven us all up. Welcome back Laura!!!
Fiona and Laura from the daycare celebrated 10 years with us in January of this year. And this really is a celebration. Having been involved in daycares in a number of diff erent countries over past lives, I have seen in a variety of situations how quickly daycare positions change, off ering little consistency and varying degrees of care for our children. The kids of our community are truly lucky to have dedicated and devoted staff .
Fiona and Laura are committed to their work, and so often I see them going above the call to make sure our kids are getting the best care, and access to the best resources they need to help guide our kids to be the best they can be! I can attest to this, having had all of my three sons attend the centre, with my oldest now in Grade 11. Well done Fiona and Laura, and congratulations on making the lives of our families better for the last 10 years. You both rock!
Our Matt visited me recently and because I know he touched a number of lives in our community, thought I would give a quick update that he is in his fi nal year of studies at med school.
We also give a huge cheer out to the Canadian Junior Surf Team who are fundraising to go to the World Junior Championships in Panama April 14-22, 2012.

SPRING 2012 TOFINO’S COMMUNITY LIVING GUIDE 5
To register for a program, drop in to
the Tofi noMunicipal Hall.
REGISTRATION INFORMATIONDid You Know?? You can register for programs at the District Offi ce. The District Offi ce is open
from 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday. We hope this makes it convenient for you to register in advance of our
programs. Registering in advance allows us time to consider implementing an extra class if the course is full,
to ensure adequate materials and supplies are available, and to implement staff /instructor changes should
we need to expand the program.
Sorry, the Course is Full Some classes fi ll quickly. If the class you want is full, please ask
to be placed on the waitlist. You will be contacted if space becomes available or if we add additional classes.
Changed your plans? A full credit or refund will be issued if we receive withdrawal
information prior to the course start date unless specifi ed otherwise during registration. There is a form
available at the District Offi ce to apply for credits/refunds. It is extremely helpful if you have a copy of your
receipt to attach to your application.
What?! You had to cancel it? Sometimes excellent courses with excellent instructors
are cancelled if everyone waits until the last minute to register (think “Tofi no time”). Register early to avoid
disappointment for yourself and others.
New Program Idea? Tofi no Parks and Recreation is always looking for new programs. If you
have a skill you’d like to share please give us a call or stop by the District Offi ce. We always have a need for
instructors, coaches and volunteers!
Program Minimum Ages For the enjoyment of all participants, children must be the
correct age prior to the fi rst class of the program. Exceptions may apply for program-specifi c reasons.
Accessibility We believe that recreation programs should be accessible to all children in our
community regardless of ability to pay. If you fi nd it diffi cult to participate in any program because of
fi nancial limitations, please speak with one of our staff .
Advanced Payment In order to secure your spot in a program, payments for the program
must be received prior to the program commencing. By registering and paying for a program in advance,
the instructor is able to prepare for the correct number of participants enrolled. If you call and register for a
program, your spot is not secured until you come into the district and pay for the class/program. By paying
in advance for your program it alleviates the Parks and Recreation Staff from having to phone and chase up
payments during the program’s session. It also ensures instructors receive their payments in a timely fashion.
If you are unable to make the full program payment prior to the start of the program, please let one of
the Parks and Recreation staff know and alternative arrangements may be made.
Pro-Rating Policy By registering and paying for a program, you are committing to attending
the full duration of the program. Refunds will not be granted for days missed, unless this is agreed upon in
advance with the instructor. Pro-rating for classes must be arranged through the teacher instructing the
course.
*New Billing Policy All program participants should register and pay in advance for
Tofi no Parks and Recreation programs. If participants begin attending a program without registering,
they will be added to an accounts receivable billing system with our Finance Department, and issued
a formal invoice for each program they attend.
If program fees are a participation barrier for you or your family, please contact the Parks and
Recreation department to make alternate arrangements prior to the start date of the program.
This issue of our Active Living Guide contains program andevent information for April-June 2012.

SPRING 2012 TOFINO’S COMMUNITY LIVING GUIDE 13
Helmets forSkiers and Boarders
Skiing has evolved into a faster sport than it was 10 years ago, and snowboarding has become very popular. As a result, more skiers and boarders protect themselves by wearing a helmet.
During the mid to late 1990s, ski helmet sales increased 10-fold in six years. It is no longer as rare to see people wearing helmets on the slopes as it was even a couple of years ago.
Serious head injuries account for less than three per cent of total injuries among skiers and snowboarders, yet they are the leading cause of death, and the injuries can have lifelong consequences.
A study of skiers treated for head injuries at a Colorado trauma centre was published in the October 2002 issue of The Journal of Trauma. It found that collisions with trees were the most common cause of head injury and were responsible for the most severe injuries. Snowboarders were three times more likely to suff er a head injury than skiers.

INSTRUCTORPROFILE
Francois MartineauFrancois started dancing at the young age of 11 in Montreal Quebec. He did the amateur competition circuit as a young lad before moving to Vancouver in 1987. He worked as a professional American style Ballroom and Latin dance teacher at Let’s Dance Studio in Vancouver for 15 years and had his own dance company teaching at corporate venues, before signing on with Princess Cruises where he was able to use his dance background in the position of Assistant Cruise Director, a position he enjoyed for the last eight years. Francois now makes Tofi no his home and has worked at Middle Beach Lodge for the last year and a half.
Francois teaches in a way that for the swing and the Latin sections, you really don’t need a partner! Students will work on a rotation system so that everyone dances with everyone...mainly so that neither one of the individuals in the couple will compensate for each other’s mistakes and learn the dance properly.

EDGE TO EDGE MARATHONVolunteer for the Edge to Edge Marathon!
Every year without fail, the people of Ucluelet and Tofi no volunteer their time and eff orts
to make the Edge-to-Edge marathon possible.
There are hundreds of volunteers, doing so many diff erent jobs from directing traffi c, to
providing communications, handing out medals, setting up sandbags and signs and water
and relay stations along the route. They assist with registering runners, providing fi rst
aid... it’s all done by volunteers, and some of those volunteers have been volunteering
since the beginning.
Thank you to everyone who helps to make this a fun, safe and memorable event. Without
your help, the marathon couldn’t be held.
To volunteer this year, please email [email protected] or give organizers a call at
250.726.4641.

TENTH ANNUAL
tofi no foo AND wine
festivalJune 1-3, 2012
A joint fundraiser for the Tofi no Botanical Garden Foundation with asilent auction benefi ting the Community Children’s Centre.
Tofi no Food and Wine Festival celebrates the marriage of food and wine, with the main event, Grazing in the Gardens, showcasing local culinary talents and British Columbia wines, in the beautiful Tofi no Botanical Gardens. Events of the festival
support several non profi t organizations and initiatives, including Tofi no Botanical Gardens Foundation, Community Children’s Centre and Tofi no’s Community Garden,
Lighthouse Trail and Multi Use Path (MUP).
In 2003, the festival began as a small, local event, and has since grown into a destination weekend for out of town guests and a favourite event for locals alike.
The reason for this is both the unique setting for the festival, as well as the superior quality of food and wine provided by local chefs and winemakers. It is truly a
memorable weekend, and a wonderful way to experience the west coast.
Every year our team leaders and volunteers help make Grazing a smooth affair, delivering hard work and all smiles. For more information on the Festival please visit

Canadian Junior Surf TeamFundraises for Panama
Be sure to come out and support our Canadian Junior Surf Team which is currently fundraising to attend the World Junior Surf Championships in Panama April 14th - 22nd, 2012. Team members range in age from 12-18. Seven of the ten members are from Tofi no and Ucluelet.
The team is fundraising to help raise enough cash to send these young local ambassadors to this exciting international event. These youth have demonstrated a phenomenal talent and dedication to the sport, representing the next generation of surfi ng culture and front-line ambassadors for our communities. They are literally the next wave — generating interest through conventional and social media, raising the profi le, brand and enthusiasm for the sport in Canada, benefi tting our communities, businesses and residents alike. Lighthouse TrailWe’ve had some trees come down in the last big storm and have had an assessment done on the damage. According to our tree guru, there will be some trees that will need some mitigation and he stated strongly that in the meantime, stay off the trail in periods of high winds. We hope to have this cleaned up by the time you have this in your hands.
The Lighthouse Trail Committee is now chaired by Councilor Cathy Thicke. The committee is preparing for its fi rst workbee to coincide with this year’s Earth Day in April. Many hands make light work, and we know there are so many of you that love the trail and want to be involved. Watch for more details as we prepare for our annual Earth Day celebrations! Until then, be aware there may be loose gravel and some water pooling on the trail.
We have also recognized that there are some steep sections of the trail that people fi nd challenging. We are working on building some alternate routes that will by necessity, take us away from the coastline, but still allow folks a great rainforest hike.
The trail currently ends close to the boundary of District Lot 120, which is owned by the province. We have requested permission to cross this Lot, which is critical to creating the connection to Middle Beach and beyond. The province has indicated it will support this application, on the condition we can show support from Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations. We have requested this support some time ago, and are hopeful to hear positive news in the near future.
Tuff City Bike ParkWhile weather has not been our construction friend over the winter season, we have not been idle on this project! Though little has happened on site, behind the scenes work has been going on fi nalizing the park plan, sourcing out wood for the skills area, and putting together some of the pieces that will make up what we have been told as being North America’s fi rst manufactured wooden pump track! We are really excited about this project, and we’re not the only ones; in a meeting Sally had with some students at Wickaninnish Elementary School, the kids were stoked to see all of the elements included in the project. As we are on a very tight budget, and we want the park to be the best it can be, the Recreation Commission Mountain Bike Park subcommittee has started a fundraising campaign. There is a raffl e in place to win $500 in cash, and some awesome “Tuff City Bike Park” t-shirts have been created, currently for sale at Sobo, Live To Surf and the District Offi ce, along with ticket sales. And watch for our committee members selling tickets at the Co-op (thanks Co-op!). Huge thanks to the people on the Mountain Bike Committee for their dedication to this project, almost 10 years in the making.... The fi nal design plans are available for viewing on the District website, www.tofi no.ca, or drop by the offi ce to speak to Sally or April. We are also planning an open house on site in the near future.

Multi Use Path (MUP)We give huge kudos to Aaron Rodgers, Manager of Community Sustainability, for his work on the MUP extension from Bay St to Olson Rd. This section has a tangled web of property issues, Highways issues and geographic challenges that Aaron managed to stick handle his way through. It’s so great to see work started on this section, we look forward to the provision of a safe pedestrian and cycling access to downtown. Thanks Aaron!
We would be remiss in not thanking the “Light the MUP” committee for their dedication to our beloved MUP. Over the last eight months or so they have held workbees to help clear sight lines to make cyclists more visible to vehicular traffi c, and have initiated the light program whereby lights are made available on a return basis at various sites in the District to enable safer cycling. Thanks gang!
The Recreation Commission MUP Advisory sub committee has purchased some MUP etiquette signs, similar to the Surf Etiquette signs donated by Surfrider Tofi no Chapter, to help inform MUP users of expectations of behaviour on the MUP. While it may seem common sense to most of us, we have to remember that many of the MUP users may not be aware of what we residents expect. We have had a number of confl icts on the path that may have been avoided if we had this piece of educational reference.
Downtown VitalizationAnd now payback time. Aaron has a huge workload ahead of him with the downtown vitalization projects, and we have committed to helping with establishing and/or improving some of the viewpoints in the downtown core, establishing a Heritage Walk, and taking on the plan for the Village Green. The Village Green is such a great space within the downtown core, we have to thank our Village forefathers for their great thinking in keeping a large area of parkland in the centre of town. Because its such a well used park, by such a diverse group of people, we really want to hear what you’d like to see in the park in the future. We’ll be sure to keep you posted of any and all avenues of input as we put this plan together.
Bert Demeria Memorial ParkAnd now payback time. Aaron has a huge workload ahead Again, weather has not been our friend in fi nishing up the fi rst phase of this piece of parkland in the Lone Cone Estates subdivision. As soon as the ground can accommodate the machinery, the fi nal stage of leveling and dressing the cleared area will be addressed, closely followed by seeding of the area. We apologize to the residents for the delay, but look forward to working with you in further development of this beautiful area, and thank you for your input thus far.
Parks and RecreationMaster PlanIt’s that time again! The District of Tofi no Master Plan will undergoing its second review since being adopted by Council the fi rst time in 2001. This is always a great time for us to take stock of what’s going well and what needs improvement, where we should go from here, and how our people feel about what we’re providing for recreational program and facility needs. Our last review culminated in an open house forum at the Community Hall, and it was one of those memorial times when the community really came together. It was an evening event, with a wild storm happening, and the power had gone out. We got word out that the event was still on, thanks to Public Works hooking up a generator to the hall. Surfside Pizza catered the event, and donated all of the food and service. From babies to seniors, the hall was busy with over 80 people sharing food and ideas on community enhancement, a great way to wait out a power outage!
This time around, we plan to start some stakeholder input through the Spring and make some obvious updates to the existing plan. Fall will be the “roll up the sleeves” time and where we’ll be really looking to our community members to help shape the direction for the department. We’ll try and plan our Open House at that time around a possible power outage!

Arts, Culture and Heritage Cultural ScanThe Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee is in the process of developing a cultural scan that will take stock of the existing arts, culture and heritage activities, events and infrastructure, with a view to guiding an overarching Arts, Culture and Heritage Master Plan. Councilor Dorothy Baert is chair of this committee, which will be engaging the public as the cultural scan goes forward. We hope to have this document fi nalized by May, so be sure to watch for opportunities for input during the spring season.
Phew!At the time of writing, there are just April and Sally in the offi ce, looking at the above and wondering how, how, how, can we do all this, and still maintain what we already have going on, plus put out the “fi res” that seem to occur regularly. We still have a few projects that are awaiting news of grant funding, and this will add to the project workload if approved. We really, really appreciate all of you that have let us know about issues in the parks and facilities, suggestions for program improvements, and ideas and input on where we should go. Please keep the input coming, and bear with us as we try to accomplish all that is before us, while still keeping the high service level we aspire to.
