fromSALLYMOLE

SALLY MOLEDIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION

The big news from our department is the arrival of River Fox Froment on November

17! Weighing in at a healthy 8lbs 12oz, he is a perfect little bundle. Big congratulations April, Jean-Paul and Citra!

Laura has stepped into April’s shoes and is doing an awesome job. We have moved into the Yellow Building above Jupiter Juice, which gives us some nice programming space. We’ll be here until the end of March, and, as of press time, we will then move into a permanent space above the Fire Hall. We are looking forward to being neighbours with our wonderful volunteer fi re fi ghters! Rhonda is off to school in January leaving a gap in our Children’s Centre world. Rhonda also instructed Roots of Empathy and some of our after school programs. We will all miss her and wish her the best in her chosen studies. Theo has fi nished up his season and is working in Alberta. It sure has been a lot quieter around here! We do miss his big smile and loud laughter.

As we fi nish up what has been the most challenging year of my time with the District, we look forward to a new year beginning. My staff have been amazing through this taxing time, I am so lucky to have such a great team. Thank you so much April, Laura L, Fiona, Laura M, Amy, Rhonda and Theo. You rock.

On behalf of the department, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best of the holiday season. Here’s to a healthy, happy and positive new year.

This issue of our active living guide contains program andand event information for January-May 2011.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Did You Know??You can register for programs at the District Offi ce. The District Offi ce is open from 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday. We hope this makes it convenient for you to register in advance of our programs. Registering in advance allows us time to consider implementing an extra class if the course is full, to ensure adequate materials and supplies are available, and to implement staff /instructor changes should we need to expand the program.

Sorry, the Course is FullSome classes fi ll quickly. If the class you want is full, please ask to be placed on the waitlist. You will be contacted if space becomes available or if we add additional classes.

Changed your plans?A full credit or refund will be issued if we receive withdrawal information prior to the course start date unless specifi ed otherwise during registration. There is a form available at the District Offi ce to apply for credits/refunds. It is extremely helpful if you have a copy of your receipt to attach to your application.

What?! You had to cancel it?Sometimes excellent courses with excellent instructors are cancelled if everyone waits until the last minute to register (think “Tofi no time”). Register early to avoid disappointment for yourself and others.

New Program Idea?Tofi no Parks and Recreation is always looking for new programs. If you have a skill you’d like to share please give us a call or stop by the District Offi ce. We always have a need for instructors, coaches and volunteers!

Program Minimum AgesFor the enjoyment of all participants, children must be the correct age prior to the fi rst class of the program. Exceptions may apply for program-specifi c reasons.

AccessibilityWe believe that recreation programs should be accessible to all children in our community regardless of ability to pay. If you fi nd it diffi cult to participate in any program because of fi nancial limitations, please speak with one of our staff .

The community hall (including all the kids’ toys and mats) is available Fridays from 10:30-12:00 pm for families to utilize. Roots of Empathy PROGRAM

We are happy to say we have three Roots of Empathy programs up and running. Big thanks to the families for participating in this very worthwhile program. Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that has shown dramatic eff ect in reducing levels of aggression among school children by raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. A community infant and parent visit the classroom every three weeks through the course of the school year. Children observe the baby’s development and learn about the baby’s feelings, thus helping the children develop “emotional literacy”. National and international research indicates Roots of Empathy signifi cantly reduces aggression and increases pro-social behaviour.

Ms Renard’s Grade 2/3s have an extra special program with the Drew’s twins, Tristan and Elleree. The children were very excited to hear that the babies could now roll over, and spent much of the time of the visit encouraging the twins to show off their new skill! In the ROE program children learn how to challenge cruelty and injustice. Messages of social inclusion and activities that are consensus building contribute to a culture of caring that changes the tone of the classroom. The ROE Instructor also visits before and after each family visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit. Research results from national and international evaluations of ROE

indicate signifi cant reductions in aggression and increases in pro-social behaviour.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE

Bobby LaxBobby Lax moved across the country to the beautiful village of

Tofi no, B.C. fi ve years ago where he began his unconventional

culinary path by working on a gourmet food truck. Cooking

directly under the watchful eye of CIA (Culinary Institute of

America) grad Lisa Ahier at SoBo, he had the privilege of

working with some of B.C.’s best ingredients while in a very fun

environment. Bobby’s desire to work with fresh and regional

products then led him to the Bountiful Okanagan where he

found Cameron Smith and Dana Ewart of Joy Road Catering.

Twice a week they would cook an alfresco fi ve course dinner

for up to 30 people at one long table, overlooking a vineyard.

After seeing the inextricable link between food and wine in

the Okanagan he began working in the vineyard and winery

at JoieFarm, where he gained a wealth of practical wine

knowledge. Last fall he split his time between teaching Coastal

Cooking Classes, sourcing honest food for the newly formed

Tofi no and Ucluelet Culinary Guild (TUCG) and cooking for

friends or strangers at any given opportunity.

Bobby runs his Coastal Cooking Classes just about every

Friday Night in the Tofi no Community Hall kitchen from

5:30 to 8:30 pm. His classes have included many mouth-

watering themes, including For the Love of Shellfi sh, A Season’s

Feast, Grapes and Grub, Five Easy Ways with BC Fish and even

a parent-child cooking class, The Apple & the Tree. Prices for

classes vary depending on cost of supplies, but usually range

between $40-$60 per person. For more info contact Bobby at

250.266.6665, or stop by the Municipal Hall to check out topics

and/or register for upcoming classes. Watch for postings each

week around town.

Lighthouse TrailAfter much anticipation, construction on the Lighthouse Trail is fi nally underway! Trail builders and crew started working last November and have been pushing hard to create a beautiful trail connecting Tonquin Beach with Mackenzie Beach. The trail is expected to span approximately 2km and is set to be completed this March. Funding from the Resort Municipality Program, Service Canada’s Job Creation program and the YMCA have made this project possible. The trail will showcase the stunning viewscapes and highlight the beauty of Tofi no’s forests and coastline, a wonderful addition to Tofi no’s existing trail system. Please note that this is currently a construction site, with heavy machinery operating in the area.

1431 Solar ShowerThe solar shower at Cox Bay Beach

continues to be well used. To date it has made $1,529 in revenue! Funds raised go into off setting the maintenance costs of the 1431 Cox Bay washroom facilities.

MUPConstruction of the next phase of the MUP, from Drader Rd to Bay St, will get underway in the next few months. Tofi no Parks and Recreation submitted a very detailed funding proposal to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure requesting $100,000 through the Cycling Infrastructure Partnership Program (CIPP). The decision on that funding should be forthcoming shortly, and we have been assured by the Ministry that any funding approved would be retroactive to the date we submitted our application (August 31st, 2010) and as such we are moving ahead. To that end, we put the construction of the MUP out to tender, and a successful bidder has been chosen to complete the work. Given the potential complications, and subsequent additional costs, that we are anticipated with winter paving, we have chosen to undertake the project in early spring. This will minimize the rivulets and run off in the MUP base, as well as supporting more optimal conditions that meet our asphalt paving standards. This should ensure a better path with a longer serviceable life built at a lower cost to the District.

The Raincoast Education Society (RES) is an independent non-profi t society and registered Canadian charity. The RES was established in August 2000 with a mission to help shape an environmentally sensitive future for the Clayoquot and Barkley Sound region through education and community stewardship. Our aim is to enable citizens within and beyond the Clayoquot and Barkley Sound region to participate knowledgeably, effectively and responsibly in the work of shaping this future for our region and for our planet.

We seek to accomplish our mission by delivering a broad range of high-quality educational and interpretive programs, such as interpretive walks, seminar series, school programs, and slideshows focused on the natural environment, cultures, and communities of the Clayoquot and Barkley Sound region. We also bring outside educators and experts to our region for programs and presentations. We work with a broad range of public, private and community institutions and agencies, both within and beyond the region, in order to establish and maintain a high-calibre education and interpretive network and to refl ect a wide range of perspectives in all educational and interpretive activities.

1431 GardenThe Junior’s Surfrider Project

The Junior’s SR garden project was started Sept. 27th, with 3 consecutive days following to fi nish up. Seven Junior SR’s were involved (Hana Dixon, Jack & Fred Sanford, Kalum & Soleille Temple, Morgan & Clayton Valk & Ella Gilbert) along with myself, Brenda Schwab, Rich Sanford, Cath Temple, Will Creba, Laura Lunty and Marc & Georgina Valk.

This public beach access and green space was becoming somewhat of a garbage dump. People were throwing their garbage into the bushes and trampling all over the garden as there were no pathways to walk through. We wanted to adopt this garden to show people that our green spaces are important and that they should be respected.

So the Junior Surfriders decided to take the garden on as their project. The garden has been rebuilt with low maintenance native species plants, and 2 rock pathways to assure low impact access between each side of the garden. The Juniors feel that it is important that the community sees that they are concerned about the amount of garbage that is not making it into garbage bins and is being left on and around our beach areas. The garden project at 1431 is now their project, they hope people respect it and keep the area clean and free of garbage. The Juniors will maintain this garden 3-4 times a year as part of their Respect the Beach program.

Surfrider Pacifi c Rim has also purchased a bear proof garbage can to go at the end of the garden area, through fundraising done last year with Shelter Restaurant’s 2 buck puck promotion.

The Helping Hands of Hospice

The Burt Family of Alberta, when they visited Tofino last year for what they thought would be their finalfamily holiday with their three children, one of whom was terminally ill with a brain tumour. When 21 yearold Landon Burt took a turn for the worse while the family was visiting, he was hospitalized at Tofino GeneralHospital for six weeks.

His mom, described how local hospice volunteers came to the family’s aid “All of a sudden there was just thispresence saying, ‘We’re here.’ It was not, ‘We’re going to fix this or this is what we’re going to do’ or anythinglike that. It was just ‘We’re here to help you.’”

“We had the blessing then of having the Hospice Society come alongside us.”

Hospice volunteers sat with the family and with Landon, but it was innumerable other things they did andarranged, both tangible and intangible, the Burts said helped them through the most difficult time in theirlives. “Through the Hospice Society there was different restaurants and organizations that offered us help withmeals and food, accommodations and services. We were just blown away by it. Just humbled, amazed, blownaway. Heartfelt thankful. The gratitude just made us weak.”
