mix_housing and commercial — mixed use
the city of biberach pursues a sus-tainable urban development policy for plots on the outskirts of the city. the plots, planned by the city of biberach regarding urban, infrastructural, landscape, social and environmen-tal criteria, are being implemented gradually. the development of the residential area of talfeld in biberach is based on this approach. there are different housing typologies, from the single-family detached house to the multi-storey residential building, which are arranged along a north-south oriented explorational, green axis.the design goal is to integrate local supply for the neighborhood in con-junction with special forms of house-building in the new-built residential area. the local supply consists of a retail store and a bakery with atta-ched cafe.

the recombination of the different apartment sizes in each building serves to create individuality for the inhabitants. each building has its own outer form, protrusion and recess supports their individuality. accessib-le via a common space, each building has a covered entrance area.

measures for identity
the recognition value of the buildings is caused by their concept: the struc-tures have a special charisma by their arrangement around the square and with their ever-changing facades. it creates a collaborative atmosphere between the buildings with inter-vi-sibility, open spaces and meeting places.
construction and material
the bearing structure consists of massive exterior walls as well as a bracing elevator shaft. stanchions and beams support the load-bearing frame with larger spreads.
creative principle
the smooth surfaces of the glass fiber reinforced concrete contrast the ele-ments of bright wooden lamination. the effect of the facades differ always by the individual use of the sliding elements. section cc elevation cc

concept
the design shows how a monotonic toki settlement is transformed by sim-ple, programmatic, architectural and exterior changes to a differentiated, social and networked part of istanbul.the verticality of the residential towers will be opened up using architectural design. the perception of the homo-geneous towers is altered by breaking up the facades, adding room layers and new typologies and the elegant use of the topography for the new entrance-level.through the activation of the base-ment zone by commercial and service use, by community areas and adja-cent open spaces, a subtle transition is made between public and private. the extended capacities generate jobs, and new actors increase the social mix.

implanting detroit — landscape
Detroit is mostly divided into blocks of buildings along a grid of main roads. The city centreis tightly covered with office buildings. The settlement area extends 40–60 km into the surroun-dings.
From 1900 to 1950, the population of Detroit grew from 285,700 to 1.8m. After 1953, it began to decrease quick-ly, and the city had only 951,270 inha-bitants at 2000.
While the city continues to shrink, the periphery extends further into the urban hinterland. From 1950 to 2000, 147,000 housing units disappeared due to tearing and torching, but in the same period about 1m new houses have beenconstructed in the suburbs.
The Dequindre Cut greenway is a scenic trait of Detroit. Some sections feature dead railroad tracks, others consist of overgrown forest aisles. Graffiti artists have gone wild beneath the bridges. Formerly an important route of transport, the Dequindre Cut
begins at the riverbank and leads far into the interior, passing the Eastern Market.
To foster new social and economic developments, a combination of urban farming and playgroundare employed to fill unused areas along the Dequind-re Cut. Together, these programs are supposed to bring together people in remarkable ways.
The catalogue determines that parti-cular areas be used either for urban farming or as playground. The choices alternate, but exceptions boost the liveliness of the rigid system.

INTIMACY
the discussion about the significance and the importance of privacy for human beings and the changing definition of public and private that is associated with the process-like change of society, is ubiquitous. this paper deals with the question, how the relationship between the public and private is changing in architecture, if the pri-vacy of the society becomes public. the line between public and private is shifting continuously. perception and use of space by the people ch-ange in parallel to the designed pri-vacy or publicity of architecture. if architecture is designed according to social needs, social issues, like “transparency” in this work, can fra-me an architectural problem. the aim is to develop a new understan-ding of architecture that accommo-dates the needs and compromises of today‘s society.
