8:00am Holy Communion
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Collect Almighty Lord and everlasting God,
we beseech you to direct, sanctify and govern
both our hearts and bodies
in the ways of your laws
and the works of your commandments;
that through your most mighty protection, both here and ever,
we may be preserved in body and soul;
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading – Genesis 18.1-10a*
The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of
his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him.
When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down
to the ground. He said, ‘My lord, if I find favour with you, do not pass by your
servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under
the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that
you may pass on – since you have come to your servant.’ So they said, ‘Do as you
have said.’ And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, ‘Make ready
quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes.’ Abraham ran to
the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened
to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set
it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. They said to
Abraham, ‘Where is your wife Sarah?’ And he said, ‘There, in the tent.’ Then one
said, ‘I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son.
Second Reading – Colossians 1.15-28
Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all
things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether
thrones or dominions or rulers or powers – all things have been created through
him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the
dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the
4
fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile
to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the
blood of his cross. And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil
deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you
holy and blameless and irreproachable before him – provided that you continue
securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope
promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature
under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel. I am now rejoicing in my
sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ’s
afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its servant according
to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully
known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but
has now been revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great
among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you,
the hope of glory. It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching
everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
Gospel – Luke 10.38-42
Now as Jesus and his disciples went on their way, he entered a certain village, where
a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary,
who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was
distracted by her many tasks; so she came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ But
the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many
things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will
not be taken away from her.’
Post Communion Prayer
Strengthen for service, Lord,
the hands that have taken holy things;
may the ears which have heard your word
be deaf to clamour and dispute;
may the tongues which have sung your praise
be free from deceit;
may the eyes which have seen the tokens of your love
shine with the light of hope;
and may the bodies which have been fed with your body
be refreshed with the fullness of your life;
glory to you for ever. Amen.

¶ We Gather
The Lord be with you
All and also with you
Hymn
1. We come to this your table, Lord,
unburdened of our sin;
and as we kneel we see again
our free salvation bought with pain
and our new birth begin.
2. We come to this your table, Lord,
unworthy of your care;
yet love unbounded floods our souls,
confirms our faith, defines our goals,
and speaks of joys to share.
3. We come to this your table, Lord,
to take the bread and wine;
we go away with thankful hearts
for all the joy this feast imparts,
for this most precious sign.
4. And far from this your table, Lord,
when anxious cares invade,
help us remember this dear place,
your mighty power, your saving grace,
your table richly laid.

Sit or kneel
All Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
6
Confession and Forgiveness
As we prepare to celebrate the mystery of God’s love,
revealed in Word and Sacrament,
let us call to mind our sins.
All God of mercy,
we acknowledge that we are all sinners.
We turn from the wrong that we have thought and said and done,
and are mindful of all that we have failed to do.
For the sake of Jesus, who died for us,
forgive us for all that is past,
and help us to live each day
in the light of Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The president pronounces God’s forgiveness using suitable words.
All Amen.
Praise – The Gloria
1. Glory in the highest to the God of heaven!
Peace to all your people through the earth be given:
mighty God and Father, thanks and praise we bring,
singing alleluia to our heavenly King.
2. Jesus Christ is risen, God the Father's Son:
with the Holy Spirit, you are Lord alone!
Lamb once killed for sinners, all our guilt to bear,
show us now your mercy, now receive our prayer.
3. Christ the world's true Saviour, high and holy one,
seated now and reigning from your Father's throne:
Lord and God, we praise you; highest heaven adores:
in the Father's glory, all the praise be yours!
Words: based on Gloria in Excelsis, Christopher Idle (b 1938)

The Collect
Lord Jesus Christ,
we thank you that in this wonderful sacrament
you have given us the memorial of your passion:
grant us so to reverence the sacred mysteries
of your body and blood
that we may know within ourselves
and show forth in our lives
the fruits of your redemption;
for you are alive and reign with the Father
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
¶ We Hear God’s Word
First Reading – 1 Corinthians 11.23-26
Beloved: I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord
Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he
had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this
in remembrance of me.’ In the same way he took the cup also, after supper,
saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you
drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and drink
the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
This is the word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
Hymn
1. I come with joy, a child of God,
forgiven, loved, and free,
the life of Jesus to recall,
in love laid down for me.
2. I come with Christians far and near
to find, as all are fed,
the new community of love
in Christ's communion bread.
8
3. As Christ breaks bread and bids us share,
each proud division ends.
The love that made us, makes us one,
and strangers now are friends.
4. The Spirit of the risen Christ,
unseen, but ever near,
is in such friendship better known:
alive among us here.
5. Together met, together bound,
by all that God has done,
we'll go with joy, to give the world,
the love that makes us one.

Gospel Reading – John 6.51-58
Remain standing
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
All Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus said to the Jews: ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for
the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves,
saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ So Jesus said to them, ‘Very
truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have
eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food
and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide
in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the
Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that
came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they
died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise to you, O Christ.

¶ Admission to First Communion
The candidates stand before the priest with their parents, godparents or
sponsors
In Baptism we are made members of Christ’s family. As members of that
family we gather together to share in the meal which he gave us as a sign
of his living presence among us. We do this in obedience to Jesus’
command which he gave at his last supper with his friends on the night
before he died.
Today is an important stage in your Christian journey which began at
your baptism. We welcome you as you receive Communion for the first
time.
The priest addresses the children by name
Have you been baptised in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit.
I have.
Do you wish to be admitted to Holy Communion and share regularly in
this sacrament?
I do.
The priest addresses the parents and sponsors
Will you help these children grow in faith and come to confirmation?
We will.
The priest addresses the congregation
Will you welcome these children as communicant members of Christ’s
family and support them with your friendship and prayers?
All We will.
The priest says to each child
With the permission of the Bishop of Peterborough, I welcome you to
the sacrament of Holy Communion. May God bless you as you continue
with us on your journey of faith.
Amen.
10
Profession of Faith
The president addresses the congregation
Let us affirm,
together with these who are being admitted to Holy Communion,
our common faith in Jesus Christ.
Do you believe and trust in God the Father,
source of all being and life,
the one for whom we exist?
All We believe and trust in him.
Do you believe and trust in God the Son,
who took our human nature,
died for us and rose again?
All We believe and trust in him.
Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit,
who gives life to the people of God
and makes Christ known in the world?
All We believe and trust in him.
This the faith of the Church.
All This is our faith.
We believe and trust in one God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
¶ We Pray
Prayers of Intercession
These responses may be used
Lord, in your mercy
All hear our prayer
And at the end
Merciful Father,
All accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.
11
The Peace
We are the body of Christ.
In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.
The peace of the Lord be always with you
All and also with you.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
All may exchange a sign of peace.
Offertory Hymn
1. Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away,
slain for us: and we remember
the promise made that all who come in faith
find forgiveness at the cross.
So we share in this bread of life,
and we drink of his sacrifice,
as a sign of our bonds of peace
around the table of the King.
2. The body of our Saviour, Jesus Christ,
torn for you: eat and remember
the wounds that heal, the death that brings us life,
paid the price to make us one.
So we share in this bread of life,
and we drink of his sacrifice,
as a sign of our bonds of love
around the table of the King.
3. The blood that cleanses every stain of sin,
shed for you: drink and remember
he drained death’s cup that all may enter in
to receive the life of God.
So we share in this bread of life,
and we drink of his sacrifice,
as a sign of our bonds of grace
around the table of the King.
4. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise
to respond and to remember
our call to follow in the steps of Christ
as his Body here on earth.
As we share in his suffering,
we proclaim: Christ will come again!
And we’ll join in the feast of heaven
around the table of the King.

The gifts of the people are gathered and presented.
The table is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it.

¶ We Share in Holy Communion
Remain standing
With this bread that we bring
All We shall remember Jesus.
With this wine that we bring
All We shall remember Jesus.
Bread for his body,
Wine for his blood,
Gifts from God to his table we bring.
All We shall remember Jesus.
The Lord be with you
All and also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
All We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All It is right to give thanks and praise.
Lord of all life, you created the universe,
where all living things reflect your glory.
You give us this great and beautiful earth,
to discover and to cherish.
And now we give you thanks
because when his hour had come,
in his great love he gave this supper to his disciples,
that we might proclaim his death,
and feast with him in his kingdom.
You made us all,
each wonderfully different,
to join with the angels
and sing your praise:
All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
13
We thank you, loving Father,
because, when we turned away,
you sent Jesus, your Son.
He gave his life for us on the cross
and shows us the way to live.
Send your Holy Spirit
that these gifts of bread and wine
may be for us Christ's body and his blood.
On the night before he died,
when darkness had fallen,
Jesus took bread.
He gave thanks, broke it,
and shared it with his disciples, saying:
'This is my body, given for you.
Do this to remember me.'
After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine,
gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying:
'This is my blood, poured out for you and for many,
for the forgiveness of sins.'
So Father, with this bread and this cup
we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life.
As you feed us with these gifts,
send your Holy Spirit,
and change us more and more
to be like Jesus our Saviour.
Help us, Father, to love one another,
as we look forward to that day
when suffering is ended,
and all creation is gathered in your loving arms.
And now with all your saints
we give you glory,
through Jesus Christ,
in the strength of the Spirit,
today and for ever.
All Amen.
14
The Lord’s Prayer
Sit or kneel
As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray
All Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
Breaking of the Bread
The president breaks the consecrated bread.
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
All Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
grant us peace, grant us peace.
Giving of Communion
The president invites all to share in communion with appropriate words.
If All Christians are warmly invited to receive communion. Those who prefer to
receive a blessing please carry this service book with you when you come to the altar.

the body of Jesus, broken for you.
1. He offered his body, he poured out his soul,
Jesus was broken, that we might be whole:
2. Come to my table and with me dine,
eat of my bread and drink of my wine:
3. This is my body given for you,
eat it remembering I died for you:
4. This is my blood I shed for you,

1. Bread is blessed and broken,
wine is blessed and poured:
take this and remember
Christ the Lord.
2. Share the food of heaven
earth cannot afford.
Here is grace in essence -
Christ the Lord.
3. Know yourself forgiven,
find yourself restored,
meet a friend for ever
Christ the Lord.
4. God has kept his promise
sealed by sign and word:
here, for those who want him –
Christ the Lord.

Prayer after Communion
All praise to you, our God and Father,
for you have fed us with the bread of heaven
and quenched our thirst from the true vine:
hear our prayer that, being grafted into Christ,
we may grow together in unity
and feast with him in his kingdom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
All Fill us, good Lord, with your Spirit of love;
and as you have fed us with the one bread of heaven,
so make us one in heart and mind,
in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
16
¶ We Go To Serve God
Final Hymn
1. Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing,
the People of God from his dwelling take leave.
The supper is ended: O now be extended
the fruits of this service in all who believe.
The seed of his teaching, our hungry souls reaching,
shall blossom in action for God and for all.
His grace did invite us, his love shall unite us
to work for his kingdom and answer his call.
2. With praise and thanksgiving to God ever living,
the tasks of our everyday life we will face,
our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,
rejoicing to welcome our partners in grace.
One feast that has fed us, one light that has led us,
unite us as one in his life that we share.
Then may all the living, with praise and thanksgiving,
give honour to Christ and his name that we bear.

Anthem
In the heart where love is abiding, God is in that heart.
And the love of Christ has made us all of one heart.
Then with joyful and with glad hearts let us thank him.
Let us fear God and remember all his goodness.
Let us love each other with a pure and clean heart.
In the heart where love is abiding, God is in that heart.
May no quarrelling or dispute come between us.
Let us see your face, O Lord Christ, now, among us.
Let us sing, with all the an-gels, praise to Jesus
in a song of joy that wells up from a clean heart.
In the heart where love is abiding, God is in that heart. Amen.

Prayers and Readings
The new edition, from July to
November is now available to pick up
from Oakham Church. It gives
suggestions for daily reading and
prayer from 10th July to 12th
November 2016. You can also
download a copy from the website.
Christian Aid Week
Churches Together raised £2,800 this
year – a lower amount than last year,
but using fewer collectors. Brooke and
Langham both collected more than last
year. Christian Aid likes different ways
to raise money, and were glad that we
made almost £1,000 with our Lent
Lunches. The Methodist Church are
holding ‘Open Gardens’ for a charge.
Details for the week are still to be
published. Peter Townsend.

Faculty Applications
Oakham PCC have applied for
permissions for two projects to be
undertaken in the autumn.
A. A development of the memorial
garden on the south side of the
church: Following a generous offer
from Oakham in Bloom, it is proposed
to replant the south side garden as a
memorial space. We are grateful for all
who, up to now, have kept this area
looking so beautiful, particularly,
particularly Graham Scothern for his
recent work, and we are sure that this
new scheme will only enhance this area
of the churchyard.
B. Proposal for the replacement of the
boiler: A new boiler is proposed to be
installed in the upstairs parish office.
Public notification was displayed on
Wednesday 22 June. Parishioners
have until 20 July to lodge any
objections. More detailed plans are
available for inspection in the parish
office or on the website.
Come and Chat
Bereavement Support
Group
For the last 3 years we have been
running a Bereavement Support group
in the Parish Hall. It has been for
people of all faiths or none, for those
recently bereaved or those who are
still aching after many years.
However, particularly since Hildred
left, it has become clear that we are
not meeting people’s needs, so the
meetings on the first Thursday of the
month in the Parish Hall will now
stop. We are planning to re-launch
the service in the autumn, in a
different format. To help provide
something useful, we have drawn up a
short questionnaire to ask those who
are bereaved what would help.
If you have lost a loved one – recently
or further back, please fill in one of
the Questionnaires which will be at
the back of Oakham Church, or from
the website. Sian Cheverton.
