8:00am Holy Communion

10:30am Parish Communion*

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,

be all else but naught to me, save that thou art;

be thou my best thought in the day and the night,

both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light.

2. Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word,

be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord;

be thou my great Father, and I thy true son;

be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

3. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight;

be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might;

be thou my soul’s shelter, be thou my strong tower:

O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power.

4. Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise:

be thou mine inheritance now and always;

be thou and thou only the first in my heart,

O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art.

5. High King of heaven, thou heaven’s bright Sun,

O grant me its joys after victory is won;

great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.

Words: Irish (c 8th century), tr Mary Elizabeth Byrne (1880-1931), versified Eleanor Henrietta Hull (1860-1935)

Music: Slane, Irish traditional melody, harm Erik Routley (1917-1982)

(Ancient & Modern – 595)

Collect

Almighty and everlasting God,

by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church

is governed and sanctified:

hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people,

that in their vocation and ministry

they may serve you in holiness and truth

to the glory of your name;

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Ezekiel 2.1–5

The heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. When I saw this, I fell on my face,

and I heard the voice of someone speaking. He said to me: O mortal, stand up on your

feet, and I will speak with you. And when he spoke to me, a spirit entered into me and

set me on my feet; and I heard him speaking to me. He said to me, Mortal, I am sending

you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels who have rebelled against me; they

and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants are

impudent and stubborn. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus

says the Lord GOD.’ Whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious

house), they shall know that there has been a prophet among them.

Second Reading – 2 Corinthians 12.2–10*

I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven –

whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that

such a person – whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows –

was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is

permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will

not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will

be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than

what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of

the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in

the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated.

Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to

me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ So, I will

boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in

me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and

calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

Gradual Hymn*

1. King of glory, King of peace,

I will love thee;

and, that love may never cease,

I will move thee.

Thou hast granted my request,

thou hast heard me;

thou didst note my working breast,

thou hast spared me.

2. Wherefore with my utmost art

I will sing thee,

and the cream of all my heart

I will bring thee.

Though my sins against me cried,

thou didst clear me;

and alone, when they replied,

thou didst hear me.

3. Seven whole days, not one in seven,

I will praise thee;

in my heart, though not in heaven,

I can raise thee.

Small it is, in this poor sort

to enroll thee:

e'en eternity's too short

to extol thee.

Words: George Herbert (1593-1633)

Music: Gwalchmai, J D Jones (1827-1870)

(Ancient & Modern – 698)

Gospel – Mark 6.1–13

Jesus came to his home town, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began

to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said,

‘Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him?

What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of

Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here

with us?’ And they took offence at him. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Prophets are not

without honour, except in their home town, and among their own kin, and in their

own house.’ And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on

a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went

about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out

two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to

take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts;

Page 6: Pewsheet - 5 July 2015 (Oakham)

but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, ‘Wherever you

enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you

and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a

testimony against them.’ So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They

cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Offertory Hymn*

1. O for a thousand tongues to sing

my dear Redeemer’s praise,

the glories of my God and King,

the triumphs of his grace!

2. Jesus! the name that charms our fears,

that bids our sorrows cease;

’tis music in the sinner’s ears,

’tis life and health and peace.

3. He breaks the power of cancelled sin,

he sets the prisoner free:

his blood can make the foulest clean,

his blood availed for me.

4. He speaks; and, listening to his voice,

new life the dead receive,

the mournful, broken hearts rejoice,

the humble poor believe.

5. Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb,

your loosened tongues employ;

ye blind, behold your Saviour come,

and leap, ye lame, for joy!

6. My gracious Master and my God,

assist me to proclaim

and spread through all the earth abroad

the honours of thy name.

Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

Music: Richmond, Melody by Thomas Haweis (1733-1820), harmonised by Samuel Webbe, the elder (1740-1816)

(Ancient & Modern - 742)

Communion Anthem*

Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness, make thy way plain before my face.

For it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord, only, that makest me dwell in safety.

Words: Psalms 5.8;4.9 Music: Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

Communion Hymns*

1. Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin?

The blood of Jesus whispers peace within.

Page 7: Pewsheet - 5 July 2015 (Oakham)

7

2. Peace, perfect peace, by thronging duties pressed?

To do the will of Jesus, this is rest.

3. Peace, perfect peace, death shadowing us and ours?

Jesus has vanquished death and all its powers.

4. Peace, perfect peace, our future all unknown?

Jesus we know, and he is on the throne.

5. It is enough: earth's struggles soon shall cease,

and Jesus call to heaven's perfect peace.

Words: Edward Henry Bickersteth (1825-1906)

Music: Song 46, Melody and bass from first strain of Song 46, Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) (Ancient & Modern – 764)

Post Communion Prayer

Grant, O Lord, we beseech you,

that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered

by your governance,

that your Church may joyfully serve you in all godly quietness;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Final Hymn*

1. We have a gospel to proclaim,

good news for all throughout the earth;

the gospel of a Saviour’s name:

we sing his glory, tell his worth.

2. Tell of his birth at Bethlehem,

not in a royal house or hall

but in a stable dark and dim,

the Word made flesh, a light for all.

3. Tell of his death at Calvary,

hated by those he came to save,

in lonely suffering on the cross;

for all he loved his life he gave.

4. Tell of that glorious Easter morn:

empty the tomb, for he was free.

He broke the power of death and hell

that we might share his victory.

5. Tell of his reign at God’s right hand,

by all creation glorified.

He sends his Spirit on his Church

to live for him, the Lamb who died.

6. Now we rejoice to name him King:

Jesus is Lord of all the earth.

This gospel-message we proclaim:

we sing his glory, tell his worth.

Words: Edward Joseph Burns (b 1938)

Music: Fulda, from Sacred Melodies 1815, William Gardiner (1770-1853) (Ancient & Modern – 507)

preserve my | life from | fear of ∙ the | enemy.

2 Hide me from the gathering to- | gether ∙ of the | froward :

and from the insur- | rection ∙ of | wick-ed | doers;

3 Who have whet their | tongue ∙ like a | sword :

4 That they may privily shoot at | him that ∙ is | per- || fect :

| suddenly ∙ do they | hit him ∙ and | fear not.

5 They encourage them- | selves in | mischief :

and commune among themselves how they may lay snares,

and | say that | no man ∙ shall | see them.

6 They imagine | wickedness ∙ and | practise it :

that they keep secret among themselves,
