8:00am Holy Communion
10:30am Parish Communion*
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. O God beyond all praising,
we worship you today
and sing the love amazing
that songs cannot repay;
for we can only wonder
at every gift you send,
at blessings without number
and mercies without end:
we lift our hearts before you
and wait upon your word,
we honour and adore you,
our great and mighty Lord.
2. Then hear, O gracious Saviour,
accept the love we bring,
that we who know your favour
may serve you as our king;
and whether our tomorrows
be filled with good or ill,
we’ll triumph through our sorrows
and rise to bless you still:
to marvel at your beauty
and glory in your ways,
and make a joyful duty
our sacrifice of praise.
Words: Michael Perry (1942-1996)
Music: Thaxted, from The Planets, Gustav Holst (1874-1934)

Collect
God of compassion,
whose Son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary,
shared the life of a home in Nazareth,
and on the cross drew the whole human family to himself:
strengthen us in our daily living
that in joy and in sorrow
we may know the power of your presence
to bind together and to heal;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading – 1 Samuel 1.20–28
Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, ‘I have asked
him of the LORD.’ The man Elkanah and all his household went up to offer to the
LORD the yearly sacrifice, and to pay his vow. But Hannah did not go up, for she said
Page 4

to her husband, ‘As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, that he may appear
in the presence of the LORD, and remain there for ever; I will offer him as a nazirite
for all time.’ Her husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Do what seems best to you, wait until
you have weaned him; only - may the LORD establish his word.‘ So the woman
remained and nursed her son, until she weaned him. When she had weaned him, she
took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin
of wine. She brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh; and the child was
young. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. And she
said, ‘Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in
your presence, praying to the LORD. For this child I prayed; and the LORD has
granted me the petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the LORD;
as long as he lives, he is given to the LORD.‘ She left him there for the LORD.
Second Reading – Colossians 3.12–17*
As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness,
humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint
against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must
forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect
harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were
called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach
and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms,
hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything
in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Gradual Hymn*
1. He's got the whole world in his hand.
He's got the whole world in his hand.
He's got the whole wide world in his hand.
He's got the whole world in his hand.
2. He's got you and me, brother, in his hand.
He's got you and me, brother, in his hand.
He's got you and me, brother, in his hand.
He's got the whole world in his hand.
3. He's got you and me, sister, in his hand.
He's got you and me, sister, in his hand.
He's got you and me, sister, in his hand.
He's got the whole world in his hand.
4.He's got the little tiny baby in his hand.
He's got the little tiny baby in his hand.
He's got the little tiny baby in his hand.
He's got the whole world in his hand.
5.He's got everybody here in his hand.
He's got everybody here in his hand.
He's got everybody here in his hand.
He's got the whole world in his hand.
6. He's got the whole world in his hand.
He's got the whole world in his hand.
He's got the whole wide world in his hand.
He's got the whole world in his hand.

Gospel – Luke 2.33–35
The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about Jesus. Then
Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling
and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner
thoughts of many will be revealed - and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’
Offertory Hymn*
1. Our Father God in heaven
on whom our world depends,
to you let praise be given
for families and friends;
for parents, sisters, brothers,
a home where love belongs,
but on this day for mothers
we bring our thankful songs.
2. What wealth of God’s bestowing
for all the world to share!
what strength of heart outgoing
to children everywhere!
Our deepest joys and sorrows
a mother’s path must trace,
and earth’s unknown tomorrows
are held in her embrace.
3. How well we know the story
that tells of Jesus’ birth,
the Lord of heaven’s glory
become a child of earth;
a helpless infant sleeping,
yet King of realms above,
to finds in Mary’s keeping
the warmth of human love.
4. Our Father God in heaven,
to you we lift our prayer,
that every child be given
such tenderness and care,
where life is all for others,
where love your love displays:
for God’s good gift of mothers
let earth unite in praise!
Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926)

Communion Hymns*
All our blessings, all our joys
with thankful hearts we sing,
true, compassionate, loving God
accept the praise we bring.
1. For parents and for children,
for husbands, wives, and friends,
for those whose care enfolds us
with love that never ends.
2. For fellowship and friendship
we both receive and give,
for those who’ve shared our journey
and taught us how to live.
3. For all who’ve shared our sorrow,
walked with us in our pain,
who’ve held our hand through darkness
and showed us light again.
Words: Revd Ally Barrett, Vicar of Buckden and the Offords, St Neots (b 1975)
Music: All things bright and beautiful, W H Monk (1823-1889) © A M Barrett

1. Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring your love.
Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.
O Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood, as to understand,
to be loved, as to love with all my soul.
2. Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness, let me bring your light,
and where there’s sadness, ever joy.
3. Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving of ourselves that we receive,
and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.
Words: from a prayer attributed to St Francis of Assisi (1182-1226), Sebastian Temple (1928-1997)

Post Communion Prayer
Loving God,
as a mother feeds her children at the breast
you feed us in this sacrament with the food and drink of eternal life:
help us who have tasted your goodness
to grow in grace within the household of faith;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Final Hymn*
1. Fathers and mothers,
sisters and brothers,
all those who love us,
for whom we care:
help and befriend them,
keep and defend them,
Jesus our Saviour,
this is our prayer.
2. And for those others,
fathers and mothers,
children who hunger,
they must be fed:
we would be caring,
readily sharing,
one with another
our daily bread.
3. Sisters and brothers,
fathers and mothers,
we who together
offer our praise:
hear our thanksgiving,
God ever living,
may we walk with you
all of our days.
Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926)
Music: Bunessan, Gaelic folk melody, arr John Barnard (b 1948) (Ancient & Modern – 136))

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book, and the hymns are taken
from New English Hymnal.
Opening Hymn 332 – All hail the power of Jesu's name
Psalm 107.1-3,17-22 confitemini domino T Attwood
1 O give thanks unto the Lord for | he is | gracious :
and his | mercy ∙ en- | dureth ∙ for | ever.
2 Let them give thanks whom the | Lord ∙ hath re- | deem’d :
and de- | liver’d ∙ from the | hand of ∙ the | enemy;
†3 And gather’d them out of the lands,
from the | east and ∙ from the | west :
from the | north and | from the | south.
17 Foolish | men are | plagu’d
for their of- | fence, ∙ and be- | cause of ∙ their | wickedness.
18 Their soul abhorr’d all | manner ∙ of | meat :
and they were even | hard at | death’s — | door.
19 So when they cri’d unto the | Lord ∙ in their | trouble :
he deliver’d them | out of | their dis- | tress.
20 He sent his | word and | heal’d them :
and they were | sav’d from | their de- | struction.
21 O that men would therefore praise the | Lord ∙ for his | goodness :
and declare the wonders that he | doeth ∙ for the | children ∙ of | men!
22 That they would offer unto him the | sacrifice ∙ of | thanksgiving :
and | tell out ∙ his | works with | gladness!
Glory | be ∙ to the | Father,
and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost;
As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be :
world | with-out | end, A- | men.

Annual Parochial
Church Meetings
Your opportunity to hear and have
your say what has been going on in the
church over the last year, and to elect
Churchwardens and PCC members.
In the northern villages the meetings
takes place on 25 March (Ashwell), 15
April (Market Overton) & 19 April
(Whissendine & Teigh), and in the
southern villages 9 March (Egleton), 22
March (Langham), 24 March (Brooke),
17 April (Braunston) & 21 April
(Hambleton), Please see the diary for
times and locations.
At Oakham, the APCM will take place
on Sunday 26 April, following a joint
10am Parish Communion, when we
will need to elect new members of the
Parochial Church Council (PCC) and a
new Churchwarden. Please give
prayerful consideration to whether
you might be able to fulfil one of these
roles – more details can be obtained
from current PCC members or the
Churchwardens. Furthermore, Peter
Hill has advised that he wishes to step
down from his role in the Treasurers
team. We therefore invite anyone who
feels that they are willing and able to
take on this role to contact the
Churchwardens, or to speak with
Peter directly. You will need to have
experience with the use of
spreadsheets and the Internet, and in
understanding the basics of keeping
Accounts. Peter is willing to assist
anyone who relishes this challenge, and
will guide them through the various
tasks involved.
In preparation for the APCM, all
Church organisations are asked
to prepare the usual report on
their activities over the past year.
This should be submitted by
Sunday 22 March, to the usual
‘notices’ email address (sorry this is
a week earlier than previously notified so
that we can have the reports ready for
Easter Sunday). Please let us have
any photographs that you have of
activities over the past year as
well.

‘Come and Sing’
Crucifixion
On Palm Sunday evening at 6pm there will
be a ‘Come and Sing’ Crucifixion (by John
Stainer), with soloists from Oakham
School. A rehearsal at 3pm will be followed
by tea at 5pm, when members of the Lent
Ecumenical Groups will join together at the
end of their course. All singers are warmly
invited to join us – if you are familiar with
the work, or are a reasonable sight-reader,
you can join us for the afternoon rehearsal,
but if you would like to do a little more
work on it beforehand we will be
rehearsing it at our Laudamus practices on
10 & 24 March. The work includes a
number of congregational hymns, and with
written reflections from the Lent Groups
will make a fitting act of worship to
conclude the Lent course. Please talk to
Kevin Slingsby (01572 460000) for more
details.
