To become more familiar with them, to get to know them better we must apply imagination and information Sources of Information – Local Newspapers Newspapers: immediate, ephemeral like letters, photos and oral history or reminiscence What would people 100 years from now learn of our lives from studying today’s Leader? Jannali Station was constructed in a similar way with the involvement of Sutherland Council. The new station would serve residents in the Gungah and Neverfail Bay areas. Long distances and the inconvenient access to Oatley station were arguments. At present there were 200 allotments in Gungah Bay and 400 in Neverfail Bay areas. Existing houses in both areas was 150. The League suggested the platform be
built at the end of the cutting near the 12 miles post. Both sides of the line were fairly level. Note: Oatley (Oatley’s) station was opened in 1886 Mortdale was the year after. In 1896 7461 tickets were issued at Oatley by two staff (20 pday), by 1936 this had gone up to 861819 (2361 pday) by six staff. Oatley embankment Area. W Bedford Letter to the editor: The proposed Como Bridge is needed to consummate the principle of a traffic bridge and pipeline. Estimated cost £60000 WA Bailley (Prop 51 21/07) League formed at Sutherland Council to promote the proposed Como Bridge (Prop 53 28/07) The Progress of Oatley – New Association Formed (20th November) A public meeting was held in the Oatley School of Arts on Monday night for the purpose of forming the Oatley District Improvement Association to work for the general advancement of the Oatley district. Mr Hughes of the East Oatley Progress Association presided. Ald Mallard said that the new association should not be parochial but have a wider ideal. A vehicle and pedestrian bridge for the Georges River at Como, an overhead bridge at Oatley railway station and local playgrounds were urgently needed. Mr Sandilands of the Como Bridge League enumerated what his association had done in agitation for a bridge at Como. The Railways Department had prepared plans for a new bridge along side the present railway bridge to carry two sets of rails leaving the existing bridge vacant. The Water Board had to find £60000
to carry two lines of pipes over the river from the new Woronora Dam. The Board was willing to defray some of the cost of widening the existing bridge to cater for vehicle and pedestrians and to carry the pipes. The election of officers resulted as follows: President Mr Hughes VPs Mr Green and Mesdames York and Clauson Hon Sec Mr Shaw Hon Treasurer Mr Vincent Committee Messrs Sandilands, C White, W Browne, J Brown, Gibbs, Swinfield, Holdsworth and York Next meeting 5th December. (10/11) Tomorrow is Armistice Day and the thoughts of all ex-‐servicemen and women will go back to the great conflict of 1914-‐1918. There was no personal hatred amongst those who fought and there is none today, but those who took part have ever kept the memory of those years before them, have ever impressed on the coming generation its utter futility, have ever kept alive the memory of the struggle in the hope that the world would never again be led into war with useless loss of life and that the nations of the earth would live in peace. “Lest We forget” has been the watchword of all ex-‐servicemen since the inauguration by that great leader Field Marshall Earl Haig in 1919 of the Flanders poppy as our emblem of remembrance, and for 20 years they have stood as a symbol of peace. If this were not so the 60000 Australians who paid the supreme sacrifice during the Great War would have done so in vain. All ex-‐servicemen have refuted such a thought and recent international events prove that the spirit of peace is beginning to make its presence felt throughout the world. Poppies 1/-‐, Buttons 6d.
