Focus: Listening and Speaking

Learning Standard(s): 1.1.2, 1.1.4, 1.3.1 (b) {SK & SJK}

Objective(s): By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:i. talk about a stimulus with guidance;ii.associate the letter ‘n’ with the sound /n/; andiii. demonstrate understanding by answering simple Wh-questions.

Time: 30/60 minutes

Introduction:

a. Greet pupils.b. Pupils reply.

Set Induction:

a. Show a picture of a shop. (Appendix 1)b. Pupils talk about the picture with guidance. c. Tell the story of ‘MyMum’ using pictures (Appendices 2a – 2h)

Step 1:

a. Introduce the phoneme /m/ by showing an action. b. Instruct pupils to: Lick an ice cream and say mmm..c. Demonstrate how to sound it out: • When you say /m/, your lips are together and it sounds like humming. d. Get pupils to do the action and sound out /m/. e. Pupils trace the letter and sound out /m/.f. Get pupils to say /m/ is for ‘m’.

Ask pupils to observe you. Do it a few times

to different groups.

Step e: Pupils may trace letter in the air, on the desk,in the sandbox, on afriend’s back etc.

Step b: Prompt with questions such as:

a.Where is this?b.What can you find there?

Step 2:

a. Show the pictures from the story and say aloud: mother, jam, mug, mop,mat, man, money, home (Appendices 3a – 3d)

b. Say each word, emphasise the /m/ sound. Pupils repeat.

Step 3:

a. Retell story of ‘MyMum’.b. Ask simpleWh-questions. Pupils answer.

Consolidation:

a. Put up pictures of items bought. b. Retell the story ‘MyMum’.c. Pupils listen to the story and arrange items according to the sequence of

the items that were bought.

Closure:

a. Teacher leaves the class by thanking the pupils.b. Pupils respond appropriately.

Step b: Example of questions:-i. Where does mother go?ii. What does she buy?iii. What does she give the man?

Set Induction:

a. Recall the story of ‘MyMum’.b. Pupils retell the story with guidance.c. Pupils identify words in the story that has the /m/ sound.d. Get pupils to do the action for /m/ and say /m/.e. Show words with the /m/ sound. (Appendix 4)f. Pupils read the words aloud and say /m/.

Step 1:

a. Put up the text and pictures used in the previous lesson.

b. Read the story. Pupils repeat.c. Pupils match words to pictures. Read aloud words. (Appendix 4)

Consolidation:
