Spring is in the air !
Winter has FINALLY moved on and it’s time to think of planting gardens, planning vacations and getting in shape to enjoy the warmer weather. We can certainly help you with all your vacation needs, whether it be with time at Club Land’or or using your Flex Plus program. While at Club Land’or you may want to take advantage of the beautiful scenery of Paradise Island to get in a morning walk or run. A hike to the renowned Cloisters is easily done, as is a walk around the marina adjoining the Atlantis. Many of our guests are avid fitness buffs, and The Bahamas offers many running and multisport events. Among them are The Marathon Bahamas, the Color Run in July and November’s Bahamas Half Marathon and 10k in Nassau. Multisport enthusiasts may want to enter the Pineapple Sprint Triathlon in Eleuthera in June or Freeport’s Conchman Triathlon in November. There are many other activities that will allow you to take advantage of the amazing Bahamian spring temperatures, such as swimming in the crystal-clear waters or golfing. You may also learn a new sport while in the islands…..cricket anyone? No matter where your level of fitness may lie, the sporting life is better in the Bahamas!

“What Did She Say? “ How to Speak Like a Bahamian!
The Bahamas is well known
for its Androsia textiles.
The wax dyeing technique is
used in several countries but
is considered a national
treasure of the Bahamas.
Inspired by the beauty of the
Bahamas, the dresses,
scarves, shirts and other
clothing items are very
popular purchases for
visitors due to their bright,
cheery colors that remind
them of their time in
paradise. But Bahamian
fashion is moving beyond the
traditional and into the
international spotlight.
Designers such as Theodore
Elyett are making a name for
themselves among the
fashion elite. Elyett was
presented with the
Caribbean Style & Culture
Award of Excellence in
Washington, D.C. last
summer. His retro chic
collections, as well as up-and
-coming BAHARI, are
available at many retail
outlets in Nassau. This year
you may come home with
more than your normal
batik, you may have a one-of
-a-kind design by a one-of-a-
kind designer!
First time visitors to the Bahamas may go into culture shock the
moment they encounter their first Bahamian (and walk away not
having understood much of the conversation). Every country in the
Caribbean, and indeed just about every island, has its own dialect or
patois. To assist you on your next trip to Club Land’or, here are some
common words and expressions used by our wonderful Bahamian
friends:
Jam up: Crowded, as in “Bay Street jam up today!”
Conchy Joe: A Bahamian of European or white ancestry.
Buck up: Crash, as in a car
Big-eyed: Greedy (no further explanation necessary)
Chirren: Children (lots of those running around the beach enjoying
the great weather of Nassau!)
Sip sip: Gossip
Cut hip: To give a beating (hopefully never to be experienced!)
Dred: Used to express extreme disappointment
Tings: Things (a fun word to say)
Tingum: Used in place of a person’s name you can’t remember
Muddasick: Used to show surprise, happiness, shock (you will hear this
one a lot)
Jitney: A bus you will see on Bay Street
Samuel Johnson said “I am always sorry when a language is lost,
because languages are the pedigrees of nations.” Celebrate the
diversity of the Caribbean on your next trip to Club Land’or and greet
one of our staff with a hearty “Watchu sayin’?” then watch their eyes
light up!

Pineappleman Triathlon in Eleuthera
June 6th is the date for the Pineappleman Sprint Triathlon, held in
conjunction with the Eleuthera Pineapple Festival. The course is run on
one of the Bahamas’ most famous islands, home to amazing pink sand
and gentle breezes. (and just a short plane or ferry ride from Nassau).
The course is challenging yet “doable” for any level of triathlete and
begins with a 500 meter swim followed by a 16k bike ride and 5k run.
Beware, the out-and-back run course is hilly! After the race, stick around
for the Pineapple Festival and enjoy the local cuisine while dancing to
bands playing island music! Proceeds go the Zion Children’s Home, so
you can race for a good cause in paradise. Registration information may
be found at www.trifind.com.
Praise For The Blue Lagoon
Seafood Restaurant
“Just a few minutes walk from
Atlantis, the 3rd floor restaurant
beats any Atlantis eatery with a
fantastic dining experience and
much more reasonable prices. A
basic fish entree at the restaurants
at the Atlantis is $40, all sides
extra. $40 here gets you not only
the fish but also rice pilaf and a
steamed vegetable. Not only is the
food wonderfully prepared, it's
healthier for you too! “
