“What Did She Say? “ How to Speak Like a Bahamian!
The Bahamas is well known
for its Androsia textiles.
The wax dyeing technique is
used in several countries but
is considered a national
treasure of the Bahamas.
Inspired by the beauty of the
Bahamas, the dresses,
scarves, shirts and other
clothing items are very
popular purchases for
visitors due to their bright,
cheery colors that remind
them of their time in
paradise. But Bahamian
fashion is moving beyond the
traditional and into the
international spotlight.
Designers such as Theodore
Elyett are making a name for
themselves among the
fashion elite. Elyett was
presented with the
Caribbean Style & Culture
Award of Excellence in
Washington, D.C. last
summer. His retro chic
collections, as well as up-and
-coming BAHARI, are
available at many retail
outlets in Nassau. This year
you may come home with
more than your normal
batik, you may have a one-of
-a-kind design by a one-of-a-
kind designer!
First time visitors to the Bahamas may go into culture shock the
moment they encounter their first Bahamian (and walk away not
having understood much of the conversation). Every country in the
Caribbean, and indeed just about every island, has its own dialect or
patois. To assist you on your next trip to Club Land’or, here are some
common words and expressions used by our wonderful Bahamian
friends:
Jam up: Crowded, as in “Bay Street jam up today!”
Conchy Joe: A Bahamian of European or white ancestry.
Buck up: Crash, as in a car
Big-eyed: Greedy (no further explanation necessary)
Chirren: Children (lots of those running around the beach enjoying
the great weather of Nassau!)
Sip sip: Gossip
Cut hip: To give a beating (hopefully never to be experienced!)
Dred: Used to express extreme disappointment
Tings: Things (a fun word to say)
Tingum: Used in place of a person’s name you can’t remember
Muddasick: Used to show surprise, happiness, shock (you will hear this
one a lot)
Jitney: A bus you will see on Bay Street
Samuel Johnson said “I am always sorry when a language is lost,
because languages are the pedigrees of nations.” Celebrate the
diversity of the Caribbean on your next trip to Club Land’or and greet
one of our staff with a hearty “Watchu sayin’?” then watch their eyes
