I'VE BEEN STRUGGLING
with what to write this month,
so I decided to just go with
what is heaviest on my heart.
My sister Deborah was taken
from us on May 24th. She was
hit in a head-on collision ona rural highway in Texas by
a Suburban that had struck
another small vehicle, killing
that car's driver, too. As the
trooper investigating my
sister's car crash said to me,
"She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."
My family and I are stil l reeling from this tragedy, but it
certainly has us and my sister's bevy of friends thinking about
the meaning of life, why we're here, what's our purpose and
how to live each day to the fullest.
You see, my sister did. She didn't care about what people
thought of her (at least not that we knew). She was a folk-singing, earth-loving, free-spirited hippy who apparently made
everyone she came in contact with feel super special. Many
stories were shared at her memorial in Austin, Texas of just
how much of a huge light she was in people's lives. For that, I
am incredibly grateful.
While we can't possibly know when or if an accident might

your quest to live healthy or even be successful. Don't spend

fun with your family and friends. Don't be so obsessed withanything that you forget to live or forget what really matters.
Balance is everything.
Debbie Doo (as I affectionately called her) had great
balance. She knew when to have fun, she wasn't a slave to
work and she took care of herself. She ate raw foods that she
grew herself, she de-stressed with static dancing and music,
she loved on people by doing massage therapy, and she hiked

model physique, but she sure didn't give a damn. She did not
apologize for not being perfect by today's standards. Even at
48, she was make-up free, didn't dye her graying hair and she
purchased clothes at thrift stores. She didn't feel that need
some of us do to be perfect.
The truth is, none of us are perfect. And all of us are
beautiful and unique in our own way. Let's not get caught up in
perfection, but instead let's love ourselves as we are right now
and be kind to ourselves and others until the end of our days.

Growing up I always struggled
with my weight. I grew up in an
overweight family, where I learned
terrible eating habits. I graduated
high school in 2007 at 17 years old
and I weighed about 260 lbs. In
September of 2009, I reluctantly
went to the doctor for a physical andthat would ultimately be the day
that changed my life forever.
Life as the fat kid is not easy,
but I had always told myself that
I would never let it get too out of
control. Well that day at the doctor’s,
I stepped on the scale and it read
301 lbs. When I read those numbers,
I could not fight back the tears that
immediately started running down
my face. At 20 years old I weighed
301 lbs. and the worst part is that I
had already lost some weight prior
to visiting the doctor.I knew that I could no longer
keep lying to myself and that I
needed to do something. I initially
began losing weight in all the wrong
ways. My goal weight was 215 lbs.
and I wanted to reach that by my
21st birthday, but after I lost the first
70 lbs. in 6 months I realized that it
no longer became about the scale,
but the way I felt and the way my
body looked.
That was when I walked into
Max Muscle Fresno and asked for
help. Max Muscle was extremelyinstrumental in my weight loss.
They taught me about nutrition and
what I should be eating and why and how I should be training to achieve
my goals and my ideal physique. With the help of Max Muscle Fresno I
was able to lose 30 more pounds, making my weight loss total 100 lbs. in
one year.
Fast forward a couple years when my weight loss journey transformed
into a fitness lifestyle and I found myself hungry to achieve my ultimate
childhood dream of stepping onto a bodybuilding stage. Ever since I
first watched “Pumping Iron” as a young child, I had dreamed of one
day having a physique like the guys in the movie and competing in
bodybuilding shows; I just never thought it would be possible.
On April 25th, I stepped on stage and competed in my first ever
bodybuilding competition where I took 1st place in the NoviceHeavyweight Division and 5th in the Open Heavyweight. If it were not
for the staff at Max Muscle and my coach Steven Kruckenberg taking a
chance on me and giving me guidance and support, I would have never
had the confidence to follow through with my dream.
My favorite products throughout my weight loss journey and
competition prep have been Max L-Carnitine, Cleanse & Lean and
LipoRed.

Living Proof Anything isPossible If You Just Try!
No Longer a 'Fat Kid'
I've been into fitness my entire life. I began taking training and nutrition veryseriously at the age of 16. I played sports, was in love with the weightroom and really enjoyed eating healthy. However, at the age of 23, I wasin a major car accident that left me with injuries to my lower spine as wellas my neck. Going forward, doctors said that my day-to-day life wouldbe a challenge and that working out was completely out of the question. Irefused to accept that reality and in 2009 I began a vigorous rehab thatlasted several years.
After years of work and learning how to work around my injuries I gotback into better shape than ever had been. In 2012, I reached my goalof 200 lbs. at 4 percent body fat and I haven't looked back since. In justunder four years I've gone from the worst shape of my life and not knowingif I would ever work out again to being a published fitness model that isnow in better shape than I ever dreamed of being. I just want to showothers that no matter what kind of challenges you are facing, you canovercome anything with hard work, dedication and belief. It would be aprivilege to have my story in your pages. Thank you you for your time.

V Age? Mind? The Journey?People keep telling me the older I get, the harder it is to get this weight off. What is it about those last10 lbs.? Is it age, or our determination to continue this never-ending battle against food, alcohol, raisingkids, being perfect in this world of surgeries, Photoshop, Cross-fit or selfies? We say we don't care, butdeep down we all care about how we look and how others see us. It's the trigger.
Why is it when we are on, we are unbreakable. No one can break us. But when we are off , we areoff? Those of us who train know what I mean. It's all or none. It's the balance that people search for. They ask me, "How do you find the balance?" And really, it takes years. Or is there a balance for thosepeople who are "all or none?"
Planning, prepping, partying and praying. I think that finding out what works for people takes years.Do people want the cookie or the beer more than they want those abs? I love hearing what peoplewant, but also what they need, at all ages, because as we know those needs will change. Don't begood – be great!
Max Muscle is a good place to start. My 15 years of training, competing, giving birth (to twins),gaining weight, losing weight, basically all the stuff over a million Americans deal with every day hasgiven me balance.
So please, don't give up. And remember, it takes years to find it. You will.

JOE'S CORNER
PROTEIN SHAKES are important for
many reasons:
• They are healthy and taste great
• Have more nutrients than most meals
• Digest easier than most dietary
proteins
• They supply high quality protein
• Cost less than most dietary proteins
• Support lean muscle mass
• Boost metabolism
• Support muscle retention while dieting
• Support a healthy lifestyle of frequent
protein meals
• Mix a healthy blend of easy-to-digest
nutrients
• Help monitor precise amounts of
protein/carbohydrate/fats in your diet Wow! It sounds like we should all
be pounding down protein shakes. I
emphatically believe that when blended
correctly, shakes can be the healthiest
and easiest ways to power pack our
bodies with a super concentration
of nutrients. How many meals can
be prepared in less than 5 minutes
that supply your body with 30 grams

25 grams of carbs and 12 grams of
sugar, powerful anti-oxidants, vitamins
minerals, heart healthy fats and nocholesterol? And they taste great. I
challenge you to make that perfect
meal in less than 5 minutes and for
about 2 dollars! Take into consideration
your time, cost, energy levels and, of
course, health concerns, and most of
you will see that protein shakes do
offer a tremendous advantage.
Max Muscle is proud to have
pioneered the ever-popular protein
shake. I guess it is a natural
occurrence since we have specialized

protein powders on the market. MaxPro
Super Protein Concentrate led the way

in the early 90s. If we kept track of
pounds of protein powders sold, I would
guess that we have sold more than 25
million pounds!
Here is a great recipe to get you
started:
BANANA & STRAWBERRY BLAST
This shake has approximately 32 grams

grams of carbs (depending on what
liquids you choose), and 1 gram of fat.It is about 200-300 calories, depending
on liquids, etc.
Ingredients:
• 8-12 ounces of milk, almond milk or
your favorite juice or any combination
of these
• ½ banana
• ¾ cup of frozen strawberries
• 1 scoop MaxPro Strawberry or Vanilla
Protein (30 grams per scoop)
• VFRRS 0D[ 3RZHU *UHHQV HTXDOV ¿YH
servings of fruits and veggies)
HEY JOE,why should people drink proteinshakes?
Directions:
Place all these ingredients in a blender and
blend for 30 seconds. I love to add 1 tablespoon
each of flax seeds and chia seeds. This will add
essential fatty acids as well as more fiber and
protein.
The key is to be creative and try
different liquids, like cashew milk, soy/
coconut milk, etc. These usually have
low calories and really make your shake
taste creamy. Also, try different fruits.
There are many different frozen fruits to
mix things up.
Whether you want to limit your shake
to 100 calories for calorie-restricted
diets or drink 1,000 calories per shake
to gain lean muscle, protein shakes
are the easiest and simplest way to do
this. For almost 25 years, Max Muscle
has helped thousands of customers
accomplish their goals by utilizing
Max Muscle products, and of course,
most of these customers have used
Max Muscle’s concept of multi-serving
protein meals or healthy protein shakes.

HEALTH BEAT From new ways to prevent cancer to leading with your head or heart, here are this month's latest health blurbs. BY LINDA HEPLER, BSN, RN
According to scientists at the Loma Linda School of Public Health, laughing
lowers the level of stress hormones and strengthens your immune system.

Smoking, Men and Osteosis Most men are aware that heart disease and prostate cancer are
two top health risks as they age. But for smokers – even former
smokers – osteoporosis and skeletal fractures are right up there,
say researchers at National Jewish Health in Colorado. The
scientists performed bone density testing on 3,000 smokers and
former smokers ages 45 to 80 and found that more men than
women had low bone density. And a full 60 percent of the men
had vertebral fractures, compared to 40 percent of the women.
To prevent osteoporosis, the experts recommend a diet rich in
calcium, a daily vitamin D supplement, an active lifestyle, and
of course, not smoking. And if you’re over age 50 and have a
history of smoking, talk to your doc about bone density testing.
Brain or Heart? Is your sense of “self,” your very being, located in your head or in your
heart? Researchers from Rice University and Columbia University found that
people demonstrate a preference either toward the brain or the heart as their
sense of self – and that their thoughts, feelings and actions differ, according
to the preference.
More people, particularly males and those who have a strong sense of
independence and autonomy, locate their sense of self in the brain. More
women and those who see themselves as interdependent with others,

VITAMIN B3 MAY HELP
PREVENT SKIN CANCERS A new study from the University of Sydneyhas shown that a form of vitamin B3, callednicotinamide, may dramatically reduce therisk of non-melanoma skin cancer in people who have already had skin cancer. About 3.5 million non-melanoma skincancers (basal cell and squamous cell) arediagnosed in this country each year. Whilethese cancers, if found and treated early, rarelycause death, their removal can leave scarringand disfigurement, especially if the cancerhas grown into the deeper layers of skin. And those who’ve had one episode of skincancer tend to develop others, which can be worrisome.
e researchers caution that more research isneeded to determine whether nicotinamide will prevent skin cancers in those who haven’tdeveloped it already. But for those who have,it may be one supplement worth trying.

Safety WHEN SPRING fever gives way to the
summer season, many of us (especially
those living in colder climates) are
eager to take things outside. Whether
workouts or recreational pursuits, it’s
undoubtedly more pleasurable to be
actively involved in the outdoors rather
than to be looking at it from an interiorwindow.
Because of the increased outdoor
activity, summer is the time for higher
numbers of emergency room visits,
too, with heat stroke, poison ivy,
insect-borne illness and allergies, and
severe sunburn – just a few maladies
bringing people for medical help. It’s
also the high season for traumaticinjuries such as strains and sprains,
broken bones, and brain and spinal
cord injuries, said Akram Alashari,
MD, trauma surgeon and critical care
physician at the University of Florida.
“People tend to jump into things rather
than start out slowly,” he said.

Preventing Lyme DiseasePlanning a trip to Maine? Whenever traveling to the northeast and upper
Midwest (or if you live in this area), you should be aware of the potential for
tick-borne illnesses like Lyme Disease. is bacterial infection is transmitted tohumans primarily by the bite of the black-legged tick or deer tick (although other
ticks as well as biting insects such as deer flies and horse flies have been shown to
carry the bacteria). Ticks live in wooded and grassy areas, and can also be carried
by dogs and other pets into the yard. Not all ticks are infected with Lyme Disease.
Once infected, many people experience a rash and flu-like symptoms, and if
left untreated, may eventually develop multi-organ symptoms such as joint and
muscle pain, and neurological issues. ese symptoms may last for a long time, if
not indefinitely.
e best treatment for Lyme Disease is prevention, said Nathan Wei, MD,
board certified rheumatologist of Maryland. “In grassy and wooded areas, cover
up completely, wear insect repellant and shower immediately after returning.”
If you do find a tick that is attached to your skin, remove it per Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov) guidelines and save it for your doctor.
en seek medical help. If the tick is engorged (has been feeding for some time)
and Lyme disease is prevalent in your area, your physician may choose to treat
you preventatively for the infection. Treatment consists of two to four weeks of
antibiotics.
Otherwise, said Dr. Wei, be alert for symptoms of Lyme Disease, especially
an unexplained rash, if you’ve been in an area where it is common – and see your
physician immediately if you develop any of them. e vast majority of people
who are treated early in the disease recover fully.
or recreational activities, increases the
problem, added Dr. Alashari.

safety, you’ll greatly minimize your risk
of spending time in the ER or sidelined
on the couch.
Condition, condition, condition.
Even if you’ve kept up your workout
routine during the cooler months,
you need to condition yourself to
the weather conditions, said Kristine
Arthur, MD, an internist practicing
at Orange Coast Memorial Medical
Center in Fountain Valley, California.
“Even the best trained athlete can
have trouble with strenuous activity in
peak temperature and humidity,” she
explained. “You have to build up to it;
‘pushing through it’ can be dangerous.” This means increasing your outdoor
workout time slowly, making sure to
hydrate frequently and paying attention
to signs of heat illness such as muscle
cramps, weakness, dizziness, nausea or
headache. If any of these occur, move
to a cool place until you recover. And if
muscle soreness and weakness persist,
seek health care immediately, said Dr.
Arthur. “These may be symptoms of
rhabdomyolysis, or a severe breakdown
of muscle tissue that can occur with
intense exercise and heat stroke, whichmay damage the kidneys.”
Use proper equipment. Even if
you’re just taking a leisurely bike ride
around the block or playing a friendly
game of baseball, it’s important to use
protective equipment recommended
for the activity, including helmets, pads
and guards, said Dr. Alashari, who
sees numerous bicycle, motorcycle,
skateboard, baseball and rollerbladinginjuries through the ER during the
summer months. “If you’re not wearing
a helmet, an injury that might not have
caused severe problems can cause
irreversible damage,” he cautioned.
That said, “Know you’re not immune
to injury, even with protective
equipment,” he added, citing a study
that showed that people who are
wearing helmets tend to do riskier
things, such as tricks, that they might
not have done if not wearing the
protective equipment.

1. CYCLINGCycling has a lot of great advantages as a sport. You can do it
alone or with family or friends, and it’s fairly cheap. Don’t want
to commit to investing in a bike? No worries! You can borrow
from a friend or rent one from a local bike shop. One of the
best things about cycling is that you can map out where you
want to ride, whether it’s in the city, countryside, or in areas
closer to home. Anywhere you choose to ride is free!
We typically think of cycling as being mainly a leg-
dominant sport, which it is, but the upper body and core
are also involved in stabilizing the hips and pulling on the
handlebars to ascend long climbs. So you can get a pretty
good workout with no more equipment than a bike!
According to NutriStrategy, a company that specializes

relaxing bike ride (less than 10mph) burns more calories than
an easy walk (2mph), which works out to 281 calories versus

way up hills and pushing your speed over 10mph, but even
keeping to a leisurely pace is a great way to supplement yourlifestyle and stay in shape.

release of the movie version of the playful Bill Bryson book, A Walk
in the Woods , a true story about two aging men (played by Robert
Redford and Nick Nolte) attempting a hike along the Appalachian Trail
with your own – hopefully less comedic – hike. The Appalachian Trail is
the oldest walking trail in the United States and traces the East Coast
from Georgia to Maine for 2,185 miles through 14 states.
While a “thru-hike” (hiking the trail in its entirety in less than one
year) takes more time than most are able to spend away from home,
you don’t need to be that ambitious to experience the hiking adventure
of your life. You can begin at Springer Mountain in Georgia, where
most thru-hikers begin, or if you’re up for the challenge, start in the
wild and rugged terrain of Maine. Or, as many people do, start your
hike in the middle of the trail in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, home to the
trail headquarters and considered one of the most scenic and historic
spots of all.

“Let’s go surfing
now, everybody’s learning how,” claims the old Beach Boys tune. But
if you’ve never learned how, it’s not too late. There are surf lessons, schools and camps all over the country that cater to adults who have
little or no experience with the sport. One of them is Endless Summer
Surf Camp in Southern California, one of the oldest surf schools in
the country and the first to be officially endorsed by Surfing America,
the U.S. governing board for the sport of surfing. Five-day packages
cost $895, and include accommodations, meals and snacks, surfing
equipment, and daily instruction by professional surfers on one of the
least crowded beaches in the area. Choose from an all ages camp or
an all adults-only camp.
IF YOU GO: While core and upper body strength is a plus for surfing,
you don’t need to worry about being in perfect shape; in fact,
surfing is the ideal way to get in shape! And with an all-inclusive

If you like backcountry hiking but your ideal wilderness experience
doesn’t include packing in all of your supplies on your back, you may
want to consider a llama trekking adventure. Why llamas? These
docile and friendly creatures are sure-footed pack animals, and can
comfortably carry about 80 pounds of gear. And booking a llama
trekking adventure through a company such as Wild Earth Llamas
in New Mexico takes much of the planning and preparation out of
your hands. For $425 for an overnight trip, higher for multi-day trips
($1,025 for a 5 day/4 night trek), Wild Earth will provide all meals
(gourmet backcountry style) and all camping gear except for sleeping
bag and pad (which may be rented). The treks take place in the
Carson and Santa Fe National Forests; base camp is set up and from
there, you take day hikes to some of the most pristine wilderness inthe country.
IF YOU GO: Wild Earth Llamas requires that participants be in good
health and able to hike 4-10 miles each day at elevations above
8,000 feet. Personal gear is limited to 15 pounds, plus a sleeping bag
and pad. For more information, including what to bring, check out
LlamaAdventures.com.
Okay, the idea of campingsounds fun. Getting up close and personal with nature and
enjoying the camaraderie around a campfire, for instance.
But the reality of camping – sleeping on the ground, sand in
the tent, shooing away mosquitoes and cooking meals over
the camp stove – is off-putting to some. Enter luxury camping
– also known as “glamping.” There are numerous glamping
opportunities at resorts throughout the country – in cabins,
luxury tents and even Airstream Trailers. One such adventure
is through the Paws Up Ranch (PawsUp.com), a 37,000 acre
working Black Angus cow ranch in Greenough, Montana, inthe heart of the Blackfoot Valley overlooking the Blackfoot
River. Five luxury campsites offer safari-style tents with fine
linens, chic rustic furniture, electricity, air conditioning, ensuite
bathrooms and best of all, a butler and a gourmet chef, as
well as housekeeping services. Enjoy a day of trail riding,
fly fishing, clay shooting or white-water rafting, and enjoy
your evening with a bonfire in the fire pit (started for you, of
course) and s’mores.
IF YOU GO: Glamping is not cheap; an all-inclusive week
at Paws Up, for example, will set you back nearly $13,000.
This price includes accommodations in a one-bed luxury
tented suite, all meals, including wine and beer at lunch and
dinner, ground transfers from the airport, and on-property
transportation, as well as access to the fitness center, hiking
trails and a variety of recreational activities such as volleyball
and disc golf. And of course, the butler and chef. Guided
excursions are extra; a 4-hour guided fly-fishing excursion
is $450/person, and a 2-hour trail ride $160 per person. But
how else to rough it without really roughing it?

Those snow bunnies among
us know of fat biking as a snow sport; thebike’s low pressure, wide tires skim over
snow and allow passage through the winterytundra. But the fat bike offers excellent traction
on sand, too, and is becoming increasinglypopular for two-wheeled adventures alongthe sandy stretches of the Oregon Coast, with
vistas of dunes, soaring crags, tide pools and jutting capes. Two bike shops along the coast
cater to the fat bike business: Bike Newport(BikeNewport.com), which offers guided
tours and rentals, and South Coast Bicyclesin Bandon, (SouthCoastBicycles.com), which
offers rentals and detailed information aboutpotential rides and routes along the coast. Both
companies charge $50/day for a fat bike.
IF YOU GO: Although the fat bike looks burly,
it’s surprisingly light. If you can ride a bike, you’ll have no problem. Don’t forget to take
along water, snacks, sunscreen and a camera!

Summer Swaps
SUMMER IS HERE, and that means hot weather, swimsuits, shorts and tank tops. It also means plenty of BBQsand time outdoors. Here are my favorite picnic and BBQoptions and substitutes:Hamburger – The average burger, with bun and toppings, is a
whopping 512 calories! Good news though: there are easy waysto cut that number in half. If you’re doing the grilling or bringingyour own meat, try 90/10 lean ground beef. You’ll cut caloriesand fat with the easy swap. You can also try lean ground turkeyfor your burger if you are limiting your red meat. Either way, make your patties 4 ounces, be cautious of the sodium in yourseasoning, and you’ll be around 200 calories.
Buns – A white hamburger bun can contain over 200 calories
and 28 grams of carbs. Grab a fork and try your hamburgersans bun (I actually prefer it this way). You can also use alarge piece of lettuce and make a mouth-watering wrap.
Toppings – Ketchup can be packed with unwanted sugarand sodium. Try replacing it with a fresh slice of tomato. Atablespoon of guacamole also makes a great, healthy optionfor a topping. Skip the cheese and you’ll save another 60-90calories.
Grilled Fish – Maybe a stretch for some, but grilling up some¿VK RU D VKULPS VNHZHU FDQ EH D \XPP\ ORZ FDORULH %%4 RSWLRQ $ IRXU RXQFH KDOLEXW ¿OOHW FRQWDLQV MXVW FDORULHV DQG LVpacked with omega-3 fatty acids. Pair it with a homemade freshmango salsa and you’ll have a delicious main dish under 250
calories.Side Dishes – One cup of traditional potato salad containsover 300 calories and is packed with cholesterol andsodium. Swap a small side salad (I’m currently in love withBolthouse Farms yogurt-based dressings) or a low caloriebroccoli salad (like the one found here: http://cookieandkate.FRPJUHHNEURFFROLVDODGUHFLSH DQG \RX¶OO KDYH ¿EHUrich sides that leave you feeling light and satiated!
Drinks – Skip the lemonade and sweet tea. Water is your bestfriend, especially in the summer heat! Staying hydrated meanshealthier skin, increased metabolism and more energy. Bonus:drinking adequate amounts of water can help you preventovereating, as signs of dehydration are often confused with
hunger.Dessert – At 92 percent water and only 43 calories per cup, watermelon makes a great after meal treat! According toNatGeo, a 10-oz. wedge of watermelon contains approximatelyone-third of the recommended daily value of vitamins A and Cand is among the best dietary sources of lycopene.

passions and the kind of enthusiasm for helping people that
only people drawn to Max Muscle franchises understand.
“Helping others lead a healthy lifestyle is the number one
reason I wanted to open a Max Muscle," said Jason. “Knowing

Seeing our customers come back having seen the results they
were looking for is so rewarding.”
Following DreamsWhile their dream is to work hard to build their business, the
way they are doing it is in true Max Muscle style: through a
daily drive for excellent customer service and educating their
customers how to make healthy lifestyle choices.
Kristan manages and works the store along with a great
support staff that they are thankful to have on their team. “I
am passionate about making people happy and feel good about
themselves,” Kristan said. “I want our clients to know they arevalued for who they are as a person.”
Community Support Kristan has set up several sponsored athlete programs to help
support local athletes and promote healthy lifestyle choices
within their community. They sponsor and work with Hallie
Stevens, Kyri Manuel and Ciara Perez, all three competitors in
bikini, powerlifting and physique.
Hallie Stevens, Max Muscle Richland, WA sponsored athlete
said, “I have tried just about every line of supplements out
there, and Max Muscle blows them all out of the water. Max
Muscle Richland stands behind their word 200 percent, and
there is nothing but real and raw results to prove that. MaxMuscle has everything to offer to ensure that you are on a
long-term road to success!”
Additionally, their business is a strong supporter of youth
sports and sponsors Kamiakin High School Wrestling Team
and an AAU Richland Gunners Basketball team for 4th grade
to 8th grade children. Cyle DeLeon is a two-time All American
Freestyle and Greco Wrestler and future Olympian. Cyle and his

SUMMER IS HERE! Whether you’re planning
on soaking up the sun by the beach, the pool
or lakeside, remember to take good care
of your hair. Exposure to UV rays, salt and
chlorine can dry out your locks, especially if
your hair has been chemically processed.
“Our hair typically already takes a beating

let your hair be free!”
How to Get Sexy Summer Hair
BY JENNIFER CHO SALAFF
MAX IMAGE
“Healthy” and“summer hair”can go hand
in hand
ROOTS ONLY
Shampoo can actually dry your hair out, so considerwashing your scalp only, then rinsing (every other
wash, for example).
DON’T SHAMPOO
BEFORE SWIMMING
“You don’t want to strip yourhair of its natural oils before
jumping into chlorinated
waters,” says NicholeShockley. “You’ll end upwith super dry, brittle –
maybe even green – hair if you’re blonde.” Tip: Sprayleave-in conditioner to yourhair before getting in the
pool to keep it from soakingup all those chemicals.
DETOX THOSE LOCKS
After swimming in the pool, use a special shampoo thatremoves chlorine from hairlike Ultra Swim, TriSwim or
Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three.
MOISTURIZE
Consider using a hair maskonce a week to quenchparched locks. Look for
products with organic arganoil, linseed oil or shea
butter. “I love hot oil rinses,”says Shockley. “Coconut,
olive and avocado oils aregood at penetrating the
hair shaft.” Tip: Shampooas usual, then work in oilfrom ends to roots. Rinse,
then condition as usual. Your
hair should feel moisturizedafterwards, but not greasy.
SKIP THE TOOLS
Give your blow dryer, flat and curling irons andheat rollers a break. Aftershampooing, towel dry
your hair, use a leave-inconditioner and let your
locks air dry.
CHIC HAT HAIR
Wearing a wide-brimmedhat can help save your hair
(and your scalp!) from thesun’s damaging rays.
esun, the pool,
the ocean waves –even the best parts of
summer can take its toll. Here are some easy waysto keep your hair looking
gorgeous all seasonlong.
DIY Sun-Streaked HairGet gorgeous highlighted strands (we love Cameron Diaz's golden locks!)
Mother Nature’s way. Lemon juice (an all-natural beauty trick that’s been
around forever), tea or beer (yes, beer!) are tried-and-true ways to getthat low-maintenance, sun-kissed look.
• LEMON JUICE: Using a 3:1 ratio of lemon juice and distilled water, pour
into a spray bottle and use just before you head to the pool, beach
or the lake.
• TEA: Brew three tea bags in 16 oz. of boiling water
(chamomile for blondes, black tea for brunettes, Red Zinger
by Celestial Seasonings for red heads), let cool, then rinse
your hair with tea after shampooing.
• BEER: Using a light beer (like Corona), rinse with
2-3 bottles after shampooing. Leave in for about an
hour, then rinse with cool water. Follow up with a rich
moisturizing conditioner.
