WWW.MAXMUSCLE.COM ı OCTOBER 2013

MORE THAN TWO-THIRDS of Americans are now overweight andmore than a third are obese. So when I spoke to 2013 MaxForm Life ChallengeFinalist David Calhoun and he told me that the “MaxForm Life Challenge didn’tchange his life, it saved his life,” these words struck a chord.

David was nearly 330 pounds and severely obese when he entered a MaxMuscle Sports Nutrition store for the very rst time. He said the day he walkedinto that store and met Max Muscle franchisee, Artie Quaranta, was the day thathe will remember literally saved his life. Since that time, David has lost morethan 100 pounds, dropped close to 30 percent of his body fat and added severalpounds of lean muscle. Many of David’s health issues that he has struggled withsince he was a child have either been signi cantly reduced or alleviated entirely. He attributes his new lifestyle and what he has learned from Artie and MaxMuscle Sports Nutrition in making him a completely new person.

Like so many of the MaxForm Life Challenges over the years, it was very dif cult to ultimately choose one winner. This year’s nalists did so amazing and they each had really unique stories and backgrounds. In the end though, it reallybecame clear to us that for so many of our nalists it had been about a life change. For David however, it had been about

a life saved. And for this reason, I am so proud and happy to of cially announce to the Max Muscle nation that DavidCalhoun is our 2013 $25,000 MaxForm Life Challenge Champion! The MaxForm Life Challenge and what Max Muscle does for this nation to educate Americans on proper and healthy

weight management could not be any more signi cant than it is right now. I believe that our calling and our challenge is toreach out into our communities one Max Muscle store at a time and educate and help our fellow Americans like David, whowere once lost and on a destructive path, nd themselves living a new life.

The Center for Disease Control & Prevention recommends these steps to overweight and obese individuals on itswebsite: 1. Know your body fat percentage, 2. Know that it is a lifestyle, not a diet, 3. Be active, and, 4. Get started. When I read this, my rst thought was that the CDC has copied Max Muscle Sports Nutrition’s model for healthy weightloss! We’ve been advocating this for the past 20 years and it’s great to see that the government has nally realized thatthese are the keys to a healthier nation. The two steps they failed to mention, which are arguably the most important, ishow critical it is to have a support group and to work with someone who is educated. They also don’t tell you how to getstarted. Fortunately, Max Muscle does and we have Certi ed Fitness Nutrition Coaches™ in our stores who will help youthrough the entire process. We also have the MyMaxMuscle.com online community that is made up of people just like youto provide a support group along the way.

So on behalf of all of our awesome Max Muscle franchisees and our dedicated team, big congratulations to our newMaxForm Life Challenge Champion David Calhoun and our amazing nine MaxForm Life Challenge nalists on theirincredible life transformations! Look for David’s and our nalists' stories in upcoming issues of Max Sports & Fitness magazine and stay tuned for the announcement of the next MaxForm Life Challenge.

TAKING CONTROLIn the all o 2009, I was in my 40s with a disciplined exercise routine but unhappy withhow I looked and elt. On the positive side, Iwould be in the gym a minimum o 5 days/week with an aggressive cardio and strengthtraining routine. Exercise had always been anintegral part o my li e. I think subconsciously that helped me justi y that I didn’t have to be

very mind ul o my nutritional habits. But I wasworking hard in the gym and getting nowhere. In act, my size and weight had been slowly andgradually increasing over the years.

A riend at the gym with similar workoutand eating habits started on the Max Musclenutrition program. Within 3 weeks, she lookednoticeably slimmer, had more energy andwas very enthusiastic about the plan and theproducts. I made a decision right then to get onthe same program, and the two o us committedto help keep each other on track.

It was Scott and Karen Herkes rom QuadCities Max Muscle who put together a customnutrition plan specifcally designed or me. Tey took into consideration my exercise regime, my weight goals and provided Max Muscle productrecommendations to incorporate into my daily meals and snacks.

In the beginning, it wasn’t easy. emptationwas everywhere: amily meals, weekend dinnerparties, lunches with my girl riends, eating out, ordering in, etc. I knew just because I wasmaking a conscious li estyle change that my

amily and riends weren’t so I needed to be

sensitive to them and adjust. And I did!

At the core o my nutrition plan were severalMax Muscle products that included MaxPro,the Quadra Cuts Stack, FBX and Pro BCAA.

I learned how to incorporate these productsinto my diet and workouts while eating normaleveryday oods spread out over 3 meals and 3snacks every day. I made sure to have the rightsnack available in my car or purse so I neverarrived somewhere starving.

It’s now been 3 years since I started with theMax Muscle nutrition plan and products. I’velost 55 pounds and have kept it o ! In 2011, Iearned my Spin Cycle Instructor Certifcationand have moved rom being a participant toa teacher. Even a ter 3 years I still have peoplecomplimenting me on my trans ormation andit makes me eel so happy and proud o my accomplishment. It makes it all so worth it.

It would be dishonest or me to say thatthis has been easy without some tough daysor without an occasional binge or splurge. However, I have had tremendous support andaccountability to my riends at the gym andthat always puts me right back on plan. And,I suppose the best thing is when we had guestsover recently and I overheard my husband say,“My baby is hot!” o me, that’s the best!

How I Went F om 1 Mi e to70.3 Mi es inL ss Th n

Y

In April 2012 I decided I neededto start getting in shape, so I joineda gym. Yeah, that old story. I wenta couple times and I even brokea sweat once. By late May I hadcome up with enough excuses toavoid the gym or a couple weeksstraight. In the beginning o June Idecided that I didn’t want to be oneo those people who pays or a gymmembership and never goes.

So, I got serious. I had two

goals: lose weight and gain strength.Tat’s when I started shopping orwhat I would need. Tat’s how I

ound Max Muscle. A ter muchreading and researching, I settled on Iso-X asmy protein o choice.

I set goals and a training program and Ialso did a 1 mile run to fnd my baseline. Ittook me 12 minutes to run one mile. Ouch. When I was younger I would run 5Ks onthe weekend, but at 40 years old and 200pounds, things were di erent. I tried to run

arther than a mile but convinced mysel

that it would be more un to just not runanymore. Tat made me mad. I knew that Ihad I gotten out o shape, but I didn’t know that things had gotten that bad.

Fast orward a bit. On Sept. 8, 2012, Icompleted my frst sprint triathlon. I was so

Truly GraTefuLI wanted to let the correct parties know that yfranchise in Wesley Chapel, Florida and itsowner, Fernando Salas, are truly incredible. only did Fernando lead us (meaning my wifeI) to the correct supplements for our needs, bhe took the time to answer all our questions point us to the correct products as well as wrout a diet plan for us on how to correctly eat6 small meals a day. I am truly grateful for thMy wife was working with a weight loss docwho cost more than $100 every two weeks aFernando was able to give her and I a monthsupply of vitamins and supplements for less $200. Thank you Max Muscle for the greatproducts as well as an awesome franchisee inFernando. I am a life-long customer.

–Dennis Taylor, Florida, via email

stoked. I had completed a li elong dream. Butit was so un that I got hooked.

In January, I ound my big goal: the Hal -Ironman riathlon at the Kennedy SpaceCenter in Florida in May 2013. It was fvemonths away. Could I get ready in time? Itwould be a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike, anda 13.1 mile run, or a grand total o 70.3 miles.

I dug deep and pushed. I got a swimcoach. I incorporated EnduroMax into my

supplement regimen. I started reading every piece o in ormation I could on training,sa ety, not overtraining, nutrition and recovery techniques, and I put them all to good use.Max Sports & Fitness was a good source o in ormation and it also contained motivational

stories o other athletes who'd trainedhard or their goals and made it. It keptme inspired.

Te morning o the race I woke upbe ore the alarm went o . I did my morning routine, got to the race, setup my transition and got lined up inmy starting wave. National Anthem.

Invocation by the Iron Nun (She’sawesome. Google her). We get in thewater. Whistle blows. I start swimming:the frst step o a race that covers70.3 miles o swimming, biking andrunning.

Eight hours and eight seconds later, Icrossed the fnish line. I know, I know.Tat’s goo y slow. I did have someunexpected challenges during the race.I won’t go into details, but I don’t evencare about the time. Te act remains, Icompleted a Hal -Ironman triathlon.

It’s kind o surreal to think aboutwhere I’ve come rom. Eleven monthsago I weighed 200 pounds exactly.

Te morning o the race, I weighed 169. Elevenmonths ago I could only run 1 mile and now Ican traverse 70.3. And one week be ore the race,I did a 1-mile sprint to see how ast I could doit. My time was 7:16. So I dropped almost 5minutes o my 1-mile time.

Tis isn’t the fnish, just a good start. Iwill continue to get aster and stronger. Max Muscle has defnitely helped. Between theEnduroMax (which I used be ore the race andin the transition between bike and run) and themagazine with great articles, and along withIso-X or strength training, I’m excited to seewhere I’ll be in another year rom now.

I’m sure many of you haveheard about how great juicingcan be. There are many health

bene ts of drinking freshly juicedfruits and vegetables, and it’s agreat way to add nutrients fromthe fruits or vegetables that younormally may not eat. The juiceportion of fruits and vegetable retainmost of the bene cial vitamins, nutrients and phytonutrients. Otherpowerful nutrients are avonoidsand anthocyanins, which are rich incontent within a variety of fruits and

vegetables. Phytonutrients, avonoidsand anthocyanins have been shownto have multiple health bene tsin ghting against cardiovasculardiseases, cancer, diabetes, cellulardamage and overall in ammatorydiseases.

I like to tell people that starting a juicing program is great , but beware: juicing is the process of eliminatingthe ber from fruits and vegetables inorder to concentrate and consume ahigher volume of the nutrients fromthe fruits and vegetables. It’s notuncommon to juice three apples, fourcarrots, a beet, one orange and acouple leaves of kale. When was thelast time you ate that many fruits andvegetables? The ber and literal choreof chewing all that food can reallyslow you down.

But we need ber and we alsoneed nutrients, so it’s a bit of abalance. Don’t just juice! Get ber inyour body to keep your eliminatingorgans healthy. But, by all means

FOREVER YOUNG

take advantage of the energy andconcentrated nutrients that juicing offers.

You may need a juicer and there aredozens of types. They range from around$50 up to $500. I suggest looking andcomparing a few things. The overallpower of the motor will extend the life of the juicer and a good name brand alsoinsures you will get a long-lasting unit.Consumer reports may also be of help inmaking your choice.

Tips for a great juicing experience:• Make sure you clean your fruits and

veggies very well before juicing, asthey may contain pesticides and foodbacteria.

• Be creative and try colorful fruits and

vegetables. Bell peppers, red peppers, beets, swiss chard and many othercolorful fruits and vegetables are richin nutrients.

• Don’t eliminate ber from your diet foran extended period of time.

• Juice only what you are going toimmediately drink as it begins losingpotency very quickly.

• Juicing programs tend to run lowon protein content. If you start a

juicing program, make sure you don’teliminate protein from your diet.

• Throw your remains in a planter boxor mix it in mulch. It’s very good forplants!

Here’s a great breakfast juice drink that I make nearly every morning:

High Energy Breakfast Juice• 3-4 carrots• 2 apples• 1 orange, peeled• ½-1 inch of fresh ginger (ginger gives

you a great rush of energy but can bevery powerful in taste so start with a

little and build up your tolerance)

This makes about 12 ounces of juice.Pour it over ice and enjoy!

Good luck with your new juicingprogram! Make sure you keep protein inyour diet. Try MaxPro, an easy to digest,great-tasting protein concentrate thatcan be mixed in with your juice. Stop byyour local Max Muscle store for a dietand training consultation. MS&F

TEENS DRIVINGBADLY

Of course you’ve repeatedly admonished your newly licensedteen driver against drinking and driving and driving while texting. But a new study from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev thatwas published in Accident Analysis and Prevention fnds thatthere is one more thing you can do: make sure he listens to theright music.

The study evaluated 85 young novice drivers, each of whom took six challenging 40-minute trips. Two were done while listeningto music from their own playlists, two with background musicdesigned to increase driver safety (easy listening, soft rock, light

jazz), and two without any music at al l.

What the researchers found? Those who tuned in to the easylistening, soft rock and light jazz made fewer driving errors suchas speeding, tailgating and careless lane switching than boththose who listened to their preferred music – and those whodidn’t listen to any music. Male drivers were especially prone tomaking more frequent and serious mistakes, especially whenlistening to their preferred music, which was often energetic,fast-paced tunes such as hip-hop or rap, played loudly.

DOES DIVORCE ALWAYS EQUAL

DEPRESSION?We’ve all heard statistics warning that stress ul li e events such as divorce signifcantly increase the risk o depression. recent research rom the University o Arizona ound that divorce has a signifcant e ect on subsequent depression only

you’ve had a previous history o depression.

The study looked at people who had a history o depression but weren’t divorced, those who had a history o depressionand had divorced, and those who had no history o depression and had divorced. What they ound? Nearly 60 percent oadults with a history o depression who got divorced experienced a later depressive episode. Both those who had a historyo depression and remained married and those who had divorced and had no history o depression had only a 10 percentlikelihood o a subsequent depressive episode.

The upshot? The authors suggest that those who have a history o depression may be less able to handle stressors outside o

the security o a relationship. But they caution that the specifc mechanisms o these fndings must be explored urther.

Mammogram

Frequency: TheDebate Goes OnCon used about what age to start mammogram

screening – and how o ten to schedule those exams? That’s understandable, since the American College o Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the AmericanCancer Society advise yearly mammogram screeningbeginning at age 40, while the U.S. Preventative ServicesTask orce recommends every other year screeningbeginning at age 50. A new study out o the Universityo Cali ornia at San Francisco adds support to the U.S.Preventative Services recommendations, fnding that

or most women between the ages o 40 and 74, gettinga mammogram every other year instead o annually is

just as e ective as yearly screening, and cuts the risk o alse-positive fndings almost in hal .This wasn’t true or all women, though. The study

authors ound that in women between the ages o 40and 49 with extremely dense breasts, waiting that extra

year may be risky, since they had a greater chance o developing a more advanced tumor a ter a two-year waitthan i they got annual screening. This wasn’t the caseamong women aged 50-74 with extremely dense breasts.

While the researchers don’t expect an immediatechange in screening recommendations rom pro essionalorganizations like the American Cancer Society, theydo believe that studies such as this one will helpdoctors move toward a more personalized approach tomammogram screening, using actors such as breastdensity and amily history o breast cancer – as well asage – to determine when mammograms should beginand how o ten they should be repeated.

YOUR EYESThe eye has been called the mostcomplex organ in your body, with amultitude of parts that work muchlike a digital camera. The cornea (thefront surface of the eye) focuses onincoming light, just as a camera lens, and the iris adjusts the size of thepupil to control the amount of light,

just as the diaphragm of a cameradoes. And eyes have lenses, too, tohelp focus on near and approachingobjects. The inner lining of the back of the eye, or the retina, converts theoptical images it receives to the brain,

just like an image sensor in a camera. But eyes can do so much more than

provide visual images, according toDr. Mark Fleckner, an ophthalmologistpracticing in New York. “During aneye exam, doctors fnd clues to what’sgoing on in our eyes – and in the restof the body,” he explained.

It’s not uncommon, said Dr.Fleckner, for people to learn that theyhave another health problem, suchas diabetes, high blood pressure ora thyroid condition, during an eyeexam. “The eye is the only placein the body where doctors cannoninvasively see blood vessels,” headded. “And since many illnesses likediabetes and hypertension affect theblood vessels, physicians can pick upa disease before patients are awareof it.”

Other systemic diseases that canbe related to eye symptoms, said Dr.Fleckner, are hepatitis, a liver diseasethat can result in a yellowing of thewhite part of the eye, autoimmunediseases such as rheumatoid arthritisthat can cause dry eyes and braintumors or neurological problems thatare manifested by double vision.

Take-AwayBe alert for eye symptoms thatmay indicate other problems withyour health, said Dr. Fleckner. Butbecause some diseases – includingeye diseases such as glaucoma –have no obvious symptoms, it’scrucial to have regular eye checkups, even if you’re not experiencingany problems. “It’s important for

everyone to have a baseline eyeexam starting at age 40,” he added.

YOUR NOSEThe nose is much more than a facial decoration. A lining of sticky mucuswithin the nasal cavity traps dust particles, pollutants and bacteria beforethey can get into the lungs. Tiny hairs called cilia sweep the excess mucusto the back of the throat, where it is swallowed away. And a vast network of blood vessels within the nose warms the atmospheric air to bodytemperature as well as humidi es the air to keep your airways from dryingout.

In addition to ltering, warming and moisturizing the air, your noseallows you to smell the roses. But symptoms involving this sensory organcan also be an indication of underlying disease, said Marc I. Leavey, aninternist practicing in Maryland. Three of the symptoms that may be a clueto systemic illness, he elaborated, are severe or frequent nosebleeds, arunny nose and changes in your sense of smell.

Everyone has had a nosebleed from time to time, explained Dr. Leavey. And the vast majority of nosebleeds are related to innocent causes, such asminor irritations or trauma to the nose, or drying out of the nasal mucosa. But sometimes a severe nosebleed or chronic nosebleeds may indicatea more serious problem, such as a bleeding issue, nasal or sinus cancer, leukemia or kidney failure. And while very rare, seriously elevated bloodpressure can result in nosebleeds.

“The mucus in the nose, that is, the stuff that runs out, can increasewith a cold, for sure. But there are many conditions, some common andsome not so, that can result in a similar drip,” said Dr. Leavey. One of themis acid re ux, or “GERD.” “While unusual, acid re ux can reach the back of the throat, and while lying down, trigger increased nasal drainage as well,” explained Dr. Leavey.

Changes in sense of smell may occur in a small percentage of peoplewithout any underlying disease, especially among older persons. Butolfactory changes, said Dr. Leavey, can also be an early and predictive signof some systemic diseases. “Nasal polyps can disturb the normal physiologyof the nasopharynx and impact on the ability to smell,” he said. “Headtrauma or in ammation of the cranial nerves, such as with Bell’s Palsy, canalso impact smell. And endocrine diseases, from diabetes to hypothyroidismand others, can change the sense of smell.”

Take-AwayDr. Leavey recommended that any nasal symptoms that are severe orpersist should be checked out by your doctor. While most symptomsinvolving the nose are innocent – and easily treated – others may indicate

more sinister disease.

YOUR MOUTHThe mouth – the rst part of the digestive system –serves as a receptacle for food and mechanical digestionthrough chewing and swallowing. It also aids in speechand in helping the respiratory system in the passage of air. But when something goes wrong with the mouth, itcan indicate problems with your health. “The mouth isreally like a mirror which re ects the health of the rest

of the body,” said Leena Palomo, DDS, MSD, AssociateProfessor of Periodontics at Case Western ReserveUniversity.

There are many conditions of the mouth that mayindicate a systemic problem. Pale gums, for example, may be a symptom of anemia. A burning mouth or gumsthat bleed easily may indicate a nutritional de ciencyor a blood disease. Oral ulcerations or other lesionsin the mouth may be one of the rst signs of diseaseslike lupus, an autoimmune disease, or Crohn’s, anin ammatory bowel disease.

Red and puffy gums point to periodontal disease,

said Dr. Palomo. This is a condition where “bacterialbio lm” (plaque and tartar) build up in the mouth, causing in ammation, and, if left untreated, loss of teeth. But chronic in ammation related to gum diseaseis not con ned to just the oral cavity, she added.

Your body responds to such in ammation by makingin ammatory proteins called cytokines, which circulatethroughout the body via the blood stream. Your liver, inturn, responds to the cytokines by producing anotherprotein called C-reactive protein (CRP). “People with highlevels of C-reactive protein, regardless of the cause of in ammation,” said Dr. Palomo, “have been suggested to

be at greater risk for atherosclerosis.” Atherosclerosis, or a buildup of plaques within the walls

of the arteries, can lead to in ammation and thickeningof the artery walls, and eventually may cause a stroke ora heart attack. In addition to cardiovascular problems, gum disease is associated with pre-term, low birth weightbabies. And it can worsen control of systemic disorderssuch as diabetes.

What is more, just as gum disease can worsen theeffects of some systemic diseases, certain systemicdiseases that interfere with the body’s in ammatorysystem – like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis – may put you atgreater risk for gum disease.

Take-AwayDr. Palomo’s suggestion: Brush your teeth and gumstwice daily, oss every day, and visit your dentistregularly for cleaning and an exam that can detect gumdisease as well as other diseases of the mouth that mayindicate systemic problems. Professional cleanings shouldbe based upon your speci c needs, she added. This “maybe twice a year for those individuals less susceptible togum disease or up to four times a year for people moresusceptible or who have a history of disease.” MS&F

MAXPRO- Consuming enough protein each day can be the difference between getting results and not. MaxPro is comprised of a blend of whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and casein protein.Whey protein is an excellent source of glutamine, glycine and the branched chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine. Whey protein transits the stomach quickly for fast absorption by the intestines,

making it ideal to consume post-exercise to speed recovery. Rich

amounts of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, are contained in whey protein. Glutathione is involved heavily in metabolic detoxification, and levels of glutathione have been shown to decrease with exercise.Peptides from whey protein have also shown to enhance the activity of our immune system.

Recently, whey protein has received attention for being effective in weight loss and reducing body fat. A newly published research study had this to say about whey: “Healthy, overweight and obese individuals participated in the double-blind, randomized clinical trial ingesting a whey protein shake twice daily for 23 weeks. Participants were provided no dietary advice and continued to consume their free-choice diets throughout the study period. At the end of the 23 weeks, subjects in the whey protein group lost statistically significantly more body weight, fat

free mass and waist circumference compared to the other groups consuming a similar soy protein or an isoenergetic amount of carbohydrate (placebo).”

Casein protein comprises 80 percent of the protein found in milk and does not clear the stomach as fast as whey protein. It is a slower digesting protein, often referred to as a “time- released” protein, making

it a good choice to add to whey protein and to consume prior to bedtime when you will be in a fasting state.

GLUTAMATRIX- Glutamatrix is formulated with three different sources of glutamine, each easy to use and providing individual benefits for our body. GlutaMatrix helps to speed recovery by enhancing immunity, accelerating muscle repair and improving brain function. Here are some highlights:

• L-glutamine is easily absorbed into the blood stream, allowing for quick absorption and

immune function • Glutamine peptides are absorbed intact and trigger protein synthesis repairing and recovering

our muscles • N-Acetyl-L-Glutamine replenishes brain neurotransmitters after difficult workouts • GlutaMatrix also includes 16 grams of carbohydrates (8 of those coming from dextrose), which is

important for fast and optimal absorption.

VIT-ACELL ENERGY- Vitamins and minerals play essential roles in most metabolic processes in our body. They act as anti-oxidants,co-enzymes and catalysts playing roles in a number of chemical reactions. Vit-Acell Energy, which comes in a delicious citrus flavor, is a natural liquid nutrition supplement that provides 100 percent or more of 13 essential vitamins and

essential minerals. It also contains a natural juice blend

loaded with antioxidants, 100 mg of colloidal minerals and energizing herbal extracts such as green tea, ginkgo bi loba, grape seed extract, ginseng, citrus bioflavonoid extract, rutin powder and herperidin extract. Vit-Acell Energy also provides 100 mg of caffeine coming from green coffee bean extract, guarana extract, yerba mate extract and kola extract making it a perfect choice for your morning multi-vitamin. Taking a liquid vitamin offers even more benefits such as:

• Better Absorption • Super Concentrated • Easily to Swallow • Better Utilization

ESSENTIAL OMEGA- Most of us know by now how important it is to supplement with essential fatty acids. Essential Omega is simply the best way to do i t. Some of the features and health benefits include the following:

• 400 IU of vitamin D • Pharmaceutical grade fish oil with no worry

about mercury, contaminants or fishy taste • Improved heart health • Immunity support • Joint support • Hormonal support • Skin health • Brain function

And the best part? The taste. You have to taste it to believe that you can take fish oil without the unpleasant fishy side effects we’ve all experienced.Essential Omega is available in Lemon, Pina Colada and Mango Peach flavors.

Max Nitro 2 was designed to provide two levels of support for NO

production, the amount of arginine substrate needed for the

production of nitric oxide and support and amplification of the eNOS

enzyme that facilitates the production of nitric oxide. For the

substrate or fuel source to produce NO, we have added a proprietaryblend of three extreme forms of arginine for maximum pharmacoki-

netics. The three multi-source forms include arginine alphaketoglu-

tarate (A-AKG), arginine ketoisokaproate (A-KIC), and arginine

monohydrate HCl. Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (A-AKG) is a

powerful and special form of arginine resulting in dramatic NO

release. A-AKG has also been shown to promote growth hormone

and insulin secretion for additional anabolic effects. Arginine

ketoisokaproate and arginine monohydrate HCL provide the other

two forms for boosting NO levels.

Max Nitro 2 ’s unique formula maximizes your body’s ability to

produce NO and enhance blood flow which will

lead to better pumps during your workout.

Believe it or not, the shortest distance between you and thefgure o your dreams just may be a personal trainer. But donbe ooled into thinking that picking a trainer is as easy asselecting whichever toned teacher is available at the gym, onot all trainers are created equally. Take a look at these sixtypes o trainers to steer clear o , so you can start sweating

your way to your dream body – STAT!

1 She Who Lacks CertifcationIf your budget’s tight, but your core is, well, not somuch, you may be tempted to save a few penniesand hire a t, enthusiastic, gym-loving friend to be

your trainer. But no matter how well she seems to know herway around a set of dumbbells, that doesn’t mean she’s aquali ed professional. “A non-certi ed trainer…is likely to harmany client [that she] takes on,” said Jaime Kenworthy, an ACEcerti ed personal trainer and AFAA group tness instructor inPhiladelphia. “Lack of proper knowledge can lead to clientsexperiencing anything from minor aches and pains to brokenbones.”

A personal trainer is a health professional, and the samestandards that you’d apply to a dentist or a surgeon (e.g. not

letting them anywhere near your bodywithout proof that they know whatthey’re doing) should be applied toyour trainer. Look for professionalswho have been certi ed by any of thetop nationally recognized programs, such as ACE, AFAA, NASM, ACSM orCSCS.

2 No Pain, No Gain Would you ever pay someoneto yell at you and make youfeel like an out-of-shape slug?

If the answer is no (and it should be),then there’s no reason to ever hire atrainer who believes in the “No Pain,No Gain” philosophy.

“You need to feel comfortablewith your trainer,” said Lauren Marty,a Los Angeles-based marketingmanager who rst began workingwith a trainer in the months leadingup to her wedding day in 2010. “Hereally walked the line between beingsupportive and kicking my butt whenit was necessary. He was also lotsof fun to chat with, so even thoughI knew I was going to face a toughworkout, I always looked forward toour sessions.”

3The Salesman

“You know, you could reallyreach your tness goals

faster by bumping up yourtraining sessions to ve days a week. And before each workout you shouldprobably start loading up on ourChoco-Tastic Mega Slim Protein Bars, which are on sale now at the Pro Shopfor only $19.99 per box.”

We all have to make a living, butthe best way for trainers to keepclients coming back is to be awesomeat their jobs, not to persuade them toempty their wallets on products andtraining sessions that they probably

don’t need. A good trainer should befocused on motivating you to go theextra mile, not pay extra fees.

4 “It’s Just a Job”MentalityWhen people don’t like their

jobs, they have a tendencynot to do them very well. Thismay be a victimless crime in someoccupations, but when you’re shellingout lots of cash per workout session, the “it’s just a job” mentality is doingyou a huge disservice. “You’ve got to

nd a trainer who actually likes whatshe’s doing,” said Scott Rowden, a

lm editor based in North Hollywood,Calif. “Many years ago I had a trainerwho was very easily distracted andI got the feeling that she just didn’twant to be there. I never went back after that rst session.” If you getthe impression that your trainer is

just going through the motions, thenyou can make a motion to suspendyour sessions and take your businesselsewhere.

5 The One-Trick PonyDoing the same workoutevery week can get BORING.

And when you become boredwith something, you probably won’tstick with it much longer. That’swhy decent trainers always have anarsenal of creative exercises and

routines in their back pockets. Keepingthings fresh and new will not onlykeep you motivated, but it will alsopush you to your next tness level.

6 In Search of aTherapist

All news producer and hostLauren Hard wanted to do

was tone up and get a good workout. However, all her trainer wanted todo was talk, talk, talk. “It was almostas if every session was a therapysession for her,” said Hard. “She’d tellme about her dog, her divorce, herdad’s house, etc. She seemed to havesort of a sad life, and I felt a little badfor her.”

There’s nothing wrong withswapping stories and dishing a bitabout your personal lives, but thereis such a thing as crossing the line.

You never want to hire a trainer whomistakes her clients for sets of earsthat are only there to listen to hertales of woe.

Searching for the right trainer can betedious, but you’ll know when you’vefound the perfect partner. Referralsfrom family and friends are alwaysa good jumping off point and canshave a lot of time off of the auditionprocess. And then it’s just a simplematter of sweat, determination andtime before the perfect beach body is

yours at last. MS&F

Muscle does not weighmore than fat. A poundof muscle weighs thesame as a pound of fat.The difference is theirdensity. As we losefat and gain muscle, weight may changevery little, while bodyvolume decreases aswe become leaner.

Resistance training does not cause women to get bulky. In fact, it is vimpossible for women to get as big (i.e., bulky) as men due to physiodifferences, such as lower levels of testosterone.

Women who want to avoid looking bulky should avoidresistance training.

IN OUR DREAMSResearch shows that if a vigorous,high-volume, core-training program

MAX CHAMP By Amanda Freeseman, 2012 MaxForm Life Challenge Champion

I can’t believe it has alreadybeen one year since I wonthe MaxForm Life Challenge.Time ies when you are

having fun! This past year hasbeen the most rewarding andhumbling experience of my life.I am so grateful for everythingthat has come with winning thiscompetition, from fun photoshoots, appearing in multiplemagazines, meeting amazing MaxMuscle employees who are all sopassionate about the products, and being able to travel across thecountry! What I am most thankfulfor, however, is how I learned toget in shape, then stay in shape –something I have never been ableto accomplish before.

Learning how to successfullymaintain a slim and t physiquewas not exactly easy at rst. Iread somewhere that if a personhas lost a signi cant amountof weight, they are much morelikely to gain back weight wheneating and exercising the same assomeone who has never uctuatedin weight. In my own experienceI found this to be true also, andfrustrating. Here I was, in thebest shape of my life when I won, thinking how much easier life willbe to just maintain weight ratherthan always losing.

WRONG! I found out veryquickly that I had to keep doingexactly what I was doing to winthe MaxForm challenge in orderto maintain my appearance, atleast for a few months. After aboutfour months of continuing thisstrict regimen I was nally able toincorporate cheat meals once perweek and was able to start limiting

Ever since I have been happywith my new t lifestyle and ndit to be second nature now. Ieat clean most of the time butenjoy a few indulgences once ina while. I continue to work out5-6 days per week and very muchenjoy it.

I found it is important tocontinue setting goals too.I found myself setting more

tness goals than anything, such as increasing my level onthe elliptical machine or liftingheavier weight, or trying to beatmy previous time on my daily3-mile morning walk. My currentlong-term goal is to be in my bestpossible shape to start a healthyfamily soon, hopefully within thenext few years! As most of youknow, I followed tness modelJamie Eason’s Live Fit Trainer tolose my weight last year. Jamie

just had her rst child, so I amhoping to follow her directionto bounce back when my timecomes too!

I would like to end my lastcolumn wishing the new MaxFormchampion the best of luck! In today’s world, we are conditioned to believe that beautyshould be based upon how we look. But how can you lookbeautiful if you don’t feel it? Max Muscle is proud to dispel thismyth through two revolutionary products, emerge™ andMax EFA™

, that will help you achieve overall beauty from theinside out!

Just ask Jen Stevens, who in 2011, found herself in the worstshape of her life. Years of yo-yo dieting and obsessing over herweight resulted in poor body image and a lack of self-confidence. With the help of some very special people and herlocal Max Muscle store, not only did Jen find the help sheneeded, she also discovered these two revolutionary productsthat helped her reach her fitness goals and achieveall-over beauty!

Getting the Skinny on emerge™Every year, people make New Year’s resolutions to finally loseweight. But somehow, inconsistency and lack of motivationdue to not being able to see results often get in the way of everrealizing this goal. But Max Muscle has your best weapon yet:emerge™ , a great-tasting powder that mixes with water toprovide a powerful fat loss and body composition slenderizingsystem specially formulated to inhibit appetite, promote therelease of fat from stored fat cells and accelerate the burningof fat for fuel.

emerge™ contains clinically proven weight loss ingredients tosuppress appetite, provide maximum calorie burning specificallyfrom fat, increase energy and elevate the body’s metabolism. The combination of selected ingredients promotes a metabolicshift that scientists describe as “fuel portioning” by shifting theburning of fat as fuel rather than fat for storage.

Jen Stevens Lost Over 20 LBS., Got in the Best Shape of Her Life andIn the Process, Also Realized A Myriad of Additional Cosmetic Benefits!

Armed with an arsenal of results-driven good-ness, emerge™ also contains a patented ingre-dient called Advantra Z ® which is an extract of acitrus fruit and has been shown to be effective infat breakdown, thermogenesis, appetite controland ultimately, in increasing the ratio of leanmuscle to total body mass. While this ingredientincreases the metabolic rate, helping to burnmore calories, it does this without increasing

heart rate or raising blood pressure. Amazingly, Advantra Z ® has also been shown to improveathletic performance.

Jen Stevens of Walnut Creek, Calif. is a believerafter losing 20 pounds using emerge™ .“I stopped working out completely,” she saysafter landing her “dream job” in the beauty indus-try. “My job left me with little time to eat decentmeals and I often turned to fast food out of

convenience. It didn’t take long to see how muchweight I had gained and that took a toll on my self-esteem. I’m only 5’2”, so

20 pounds is pretty noticeable!” She’d tried several fad diets, diet pills andpowders in the past that left her feeling “horrible and moody” and knew that

she needed help from an expert.

Stevens was on a mission and, not only hired a personal trainer to get back intoshape, but also turned to her local Max Muscle store in Walnut Creek to enlist the help

of owner, Kenny Tali, to help with her weight loss goals. Tali evaluated her diet, madesuggestions and quickly recommendedemerge™ to assist Stevens in losingthe unwanted weight. She used onescoop in the morning, another scoopmid-day, and then half a scoop in theafternoon, Monday through Friday, foreight weeks. She could see her bodychanging dramatically as she becamemore toned. The results were motivat-ing and gave Stevens the encourage-ment to get to the gym daily.

Amazed by the transformation,Stevens decided to enter an NPCBikini competition. After extensiveresearch she realized that the verysame Max Muscle store where shepurchases her emerge™ was alsoowned and operated by one of themost well respected competition prepcoaches in the industry: Kenny Tali.

With Tali at her side, Jen is nowprepping for NPC nationals hoping toearn her IFBB PRO status by the endof 2013.

Stevens credits emerge™ for notonly helping her lose 20 unwantedpounds, but for helping her get intocompetition shape. “I couldn’t havelost the weight without it,” she says. “Ilove how it tastes and that I can take itwithout feeling moody or jittery orcrash from it. I have a major sweet

tooth and emerge™ saves me frombinging on bad foods and keeps meon track!”

Max EFA™ – Get Your Fat On! Not all fat is bad for you. There is the “bad” fat that collects on yourbody and clogs the arteries and then there is the “good” fat, alsoknown as Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), which your body needs tofunction properly.

EFAs are specific fats that are critical to the proper function of yourbody. Your body is not able to produce these fatty acids on its own, soit’s necessary that you eat a diet rich in these crucial building blocks tomaintain a healthy body. Unfortunately, most people don’t eat the righttypes of foods that meet the minimum recommended daily allowancesof EFAs. But, Max Muscle makes this easy to attain with Max EFA™ ,an easy-to-consume supplement in softgel form.

Max EFA™ contains flaxseed oil, wheat germ oil, conjugated linoleicacid (CLA) oil and borage seed oil, all essential fatty acids that will helpyou to achieve improved overall health. Essential Fatty Acids have aton of benefits on your body and its cells. They help with cellular devel-opment, the formation of healthy cell membranes and regulate bloodpressure, immune responses and liver function. EFAs also help withblood clotting and breaking down cholesterol and, the oils from EFAsalso lubricate the body from the inside out, instantly supporting thenew growth of hair, skin and nails.

When Stevens decided to try her hand at bikini competitions, Tali notonly recommended emerge™ for weight loss, but Max EFA™ foroverall health. “I like my athletes and customers to use it because ofall the healthy, good fats found in the product,” he explains. “Theomegas make the hair and skin look so healthy and in turn, feel goodabout their appearance as well.” Stevens took two softgel capsules ofMax EFA™ twice a day, every day. After only 10 days, she noticed abig improvement in her complexion, hair and nails. “The results wereamazing!” says Stevens. “Almost immediately, I could see the change, but to have other people notice, too, that’s how I knew it worked. I’venever gotten so many compliments about my skin and hair until Istarted using Max EFA™ .” And, when she’s not competing, shecontinues to use the product daily. “Why wouldn’t I?” Stevens says.“It’s made such a difference! I honestly look and feel more beautiful.”

Sardines sometimes get a bad rap but are in fact extremelyhealthy for you, mainly because they’re high in omega-3fatty acids. “Because the conversion of plant omega 3’s isinef cient in the body, sh sources are the best way to getomega 3’s,” said Miyaki. Therefore, these small swimmerscan reduce in ammation and regulate insulin sensitivity.

And their high levels of vitamin C help prevent bonedisease.

COMPLEXION

Containing twice as much vitamin C as an orange, red bellpeppers help clear skin. “This vegetable is really avorful,so it’s great to add to a stir fry or other dishes,” said Miyaki.

“It’s more bene cial than pouring empty calories on yourplate.” It’s also a great source of potassium and vitamin A.

HAIR AND NAIL STRENGTH

Spinach is a good source of protein, especially for thosewho have a plant-based diet, building and supportingmuscle mass. According to Miyaki, it is the highest alkalinefood, stocked with vitamin A, ber and minerals. This leafygreen also has many antioxidant properties thanks to itscomposition of beta-carotene, vitamin C and lutein.

VISION

Don’t just enjoy pumpkin seasonally – eat it year round. “It’s a root vegetable, meaning it’s a primary carb source,” said Miyaki. This orange food is a great source of vitamin

A and C, potassium and ber. It helps promote heart andbone health, and also serves bene ts for skin and eyesightthanks to its beta-carotene count.

CIRCULATION

You’ve probably heard it before, but chocolate can be goodfor you – if it’s dark. “Dark chocolate contains avonoidsand lots of speci c antioxidants,” said Miyaki. This treat canhelp blood ow and cardiovascular health. But pay attentionto the cacao level; the higher it is, the more you bene t.

OVERALL HEALTH

Magnesium is an important mineral involved in more than300 metabolic and enzyme processes, and according tothe U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 50 percentof Americans are de cient. “Magnesium helps metabolizecarbs and fats, is involved in the production of ADP andsynthesizes protein,” said Scott Herkes, a Max Musclefranchisee. “Lots of disorders such as diabetes, frequencyof migraine headaches, osteoporosis and hypertensioncan come partially from being de cient.” Plus, we needmagnesium for calcium absorption.

IMMUNE SYSTEM

Whey protein contains fractions that can directly enhanceyour immune system, boosting overall health. “There isn’treally another type of supplement that has the same typeof impact as whey,” said Herkes. It contains glutamine andantioxidants that help as you get older and have higher freeradical levels. After a workout, your body may feel depletedand whey protein can help with that. MS&F

The words “comfort foods” conjure up visions of mac 'n' cheese, lasagna, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a lot of foods that may seem comfortingat the time, but leave your body feeling bloated, sluggish and anything butcomforted. The good news is that comfort foods can actually be comfortingto both the body and the soul and satisfying to the taste buds, too!

A favorite dish for fall is ragout. Meaning a well seasoned dish consisting of small bits of meat with stewed vegetables, ragout can be made with a varietyof proteins and vegetables including beef, lamb, pork, or make a vegetarianversion using hearty eggplant. Potatoes are common in ragout dishes, yet inthis recipe, they are replaced with nutrient dense butternut squash and superfood quinoa. Flavorful, lean turkey bacon is used in place of high-fat salt pork and chicken is the protein of choice. Braised and cooked over low heat, thisdish gets an infusion of delicious avor from fresh herbs of thyme, oreganoand parsley and whole peppercorns.

TO BUYORGANICOR NOT?

MakingSMart

ChoiCeS You’ve likely seen organic products

o ered at many o the places you shop You’ve also probably noticed they come

with a higher price tag. What exactly does it mean to be “USDA certifed

organic” and is it really better or you?

The most basic way to de ne organicis animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products do not takeantibiotics or growth hormones.Produce and other ingredients aregrown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modi ed organisms orionizing radiation.

According to the United StatesDepartment of Agriculture (USDA), inorder to qualify as organic farmers,

producers must use renewableresources and aim to conserve soil andwater to enhance the environmentalquality for future generations.

Scottsdale, Arizona-based doctorGracie Lyons, who is also a certi ed rawnutritionist and yoga instructor, startedeating organic when her son was

just four months old. Lyons’ son haddeveloped a severe case of eczema.

After doing her own research andseeking medical advice she changed hisdiet in an effort to help him and also

changed her diet as a result. Having hada strong interest in organic natural foodsthrough college and medical school,Lyons’s interest continued to grow due toher son’s medical issues. Eating organic, particularly raw organic food, made herfeel energetic and healthy.

Lyons admits that there is a big debatecurrently on whether organic food is

actually more nutrient-rich and healthythan non-organic. She emphasizes that’slikely not what we should be focusingon. “It’s the pesticide load that the bodyhas to handle from heavily sprayedconventional food that adds toxicity toour bodies, not to mention the toxiceffect it is having on our land, air andwater.”

Erin MacDonald, RDN, a nutrition, tness and wellness coach/co-founder

of U Rock Girl (www.URockGirl.com)encourages people to beware of the

following myths surrounding organicfood.

Organic Always Means Healthy.People often mistake organic forhealthy. While organic food can offersome bene ts to the body, there are

a lot of foods that are organic but notnecessarily good for you. For example, fatty cheeseburgers can technically beorganic but that doesn’t mean mostdieticians are going to recommend thatpeople eat them regularly. People whoshop organic should be mindful to stillfollow a well-rounded diet made upof lean protein, healthy fats, complex

carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables.

All-Natural is Synonymous withOrganic When It Comes To Food. These are very different labels. As amatter of fact, there is no governmentregulation on all-natural food. Naturalfoods simply means it originally existedin nature. MacDonald is quick to pointout that arsenic comes from nature, butthat doesn’t mean people want it in theirhealthy diet.

Seafood Can Be Organic. The seafood industry is not regulatedby the USDA like that of the meat, dairyand poultry industry. Therefore, there isno United States government approvedlabel for organic seafood.

The Dirty DozenSwitching to organic eating canbe costly, which is what makes theEnvironmental Working Group’sdirty dozen list very useful. TheEnvironmental WorkingGroup regularly analyzesDepartment of Agriculture data to determine which foods havethe highest levels of pesticides. Thedirty dozen is a list of those fruitsand vegetables. Research suggeststhat individuals can eliminate 80percent of the pesticides in their dietsimply by buying organic when they

purchase these foods:• apples• strawberries• peaches• grapes• spinach• celery• cherry tomatoes• cucumbers• hot peppers• nectarines (imported)• potatoes• sweet bell peppers

When shopping organic, keep thisinformation in mind:• Products with less than 70 percent organic ingredients may list organically

produced ingredients on the side panel of the package, but may not make anyorganic claims on the front of the package.

• Not all organic products are created equal. Different types of foods requiredifferent labels. Educate yourself on what they mean in order to make the bestchoice for you.

• Some ingredients are exempt from the organic de nition because they are toodif cult to source organically. These include foods using sausage casings, celerypowder, sh oils and some coloring.

• Only foods certi ed as at least 95 percent organic are allowed to carry theUSDA certi ed organic label.

Organic Foods are Super Foods. There is no uniform de nition for theterm superfood, nor is there an of ciallist of super foods. However, Wikipediasites that the term is “sometimes usedto describe food with high nutrientor phytochemical content that mayconfer health bene ts, with fewproperties considered to be negative, such as being high in saturated fatsor in the case of processed products:arti cial ingredients, food additives orcontaminants.” With that in mind, someorganic products might be consideredto be superfoods according to thede nition but many would not.

Organic produce can cost up to 40percent more than regular produce, which may present nancial challengesfor some. Consumers need to weighout the bene ts in their own mind todetermine whether organic eating isright for themselves and their family.Regardless of that choice, it is stillmore bene cial to include vegetablesand fruits in your diet, even if itmeans consuming non-organic items.MS&F

fed beef isn’t always accessible or costeffective. Some studies suggest thatCLA consumption may have dropped asmuch as 80 percent over the past twodecades and even those consumingCLA through their diet are not gettingenough to get the bene ts revealed inendless numbers of compelling studies.Supplementing with the right type of CLA is the best way to make sure you’regetting the proper amount, ensuringoptimal results.

How CLA WorksIt is thought that CLA reduces body fatby “shrinking” the fat cells and keepinglittle fat cells from getting bigger.CLA also speeds up our metabolismby converting food to energy moreef ciently so we burn the fuel from foodas energy rather than store it as fat.

A study in 2007 showed that CLApositively altered fat oxidation andenergy expenditure during sleep. The subjects given the CLA burnedfat instead of protein while sleeping. They lost body fat, and actually addedmuscle. A study in The Journal of Nutrition 2000 showed that CLA takendaily reduced body fat and sparedmuscle mass in overweight or obesepeople, who did not change their diet.

An average of six pounds of fat waslost with the CLA group vs. the placebogroup.

CLA has only been shown to reducefat storage and increase muscle butit has also been shown to prevent fatstorage. This means that CLA will alsokeep us from gaining weight! A study bythe University of Wisconsin, conductedover the holiday season, a time whenmost of us gain weight, showed thatCLA works to prevent weight gain andeven promote fat loss. The subjectswere given 3.2 grams of CLA per dayand lost an average of 2.2 pounds of fat, while the placebo group gained an

average of 1.5 pounds. In most of thestudies, a daily dose of 3.2 grams to 6grams of CLA taken at different timesduring the day is used.

It may be hard to believe, but CLAsupplementation does even morethan help us add muscle and burnfat. Several other studies have shownimpressive health bene ts includingreduced risk of cancer (shown to lowerbreast, colon and prostate cancer),improved immune function, positiveresults for Type II diabetes, appetite

control, improved cholesterol pro le andlower cortisol levels. MS&F
