Haitian Ministry Twinning Program
What is twinning? The Diocese of Richmond has had a twinning relationship with the Diocese of
Hinche in Haiti since 1984.
Who is involved in twinning? Twinning identifies relationships between communities at various
parishes in Virginia and communities in Haiti.
How does twinning work? Virginia and Haitian parishes who wish to get involved begin by sharing
information. As relationships develop, this can lead to visits by Virginia pastoral staff and parishioners or
Haitian pastors. It grows by exchanging parish profiles, photo albums and other ways of getting to know each
other better.
How can twinning help? Remembering each other’s special days and festivals, and including each other in litur-
gical prayer is an important part of twinning. Many parishes in Virginia raise funds to aid communities in Haiti,
as well as raising the community’s level of awareness of Haiti.
What are some of the possibilities of twinning? Twinning includes a variety of possibilities. Parishes, schools,
hospitals, parish clinics, orphanages, religious communities, and individuals in Haiti are open to
twinning relationships.
How can I help? The Basilica of St. Mary Haitian Ministry is working diligently to build our twin
relationship with Our Lady of Fatima in Bassin Zime, Haiti. Feel free to contact Wendy Fatal, Haitian
Ministry Chair at 757-289-9221 or Co-Chair, Raynald David at 757-535-4186. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of
each month in the church hall at 6:30pm. Come out to hear about the wonderful twinning relationship that contin-
ues to grow between brothers and sisters of the Basilica of St. Mary and Our Lady of Fatima.
We look forward to seeing you!
Knights of Columbus Norfolk Council 367,
"The First Council in the South"
cordially invites you to attend our annual Memorial Mass to honor our
Brother Knights and family members who have gone to their eternal rest
over the past year. This year's Mass will be held in the Main Hall at our
Council home at 5201 Kennebeck Ave. in Norfolk on Thursday,
November 9. 2017 at 7:00 p.m. Our Worthy Chaplain Fr. Paul
Muyimbwa, pastor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk, will be
our Celebrant.
cordially invites you to attend our 7TH ANNUAL THANKSGIVING
WEEKEND OYSTER ROAST. In addition to the most
mouthwatering oysters in the 757, there will be plenty of Carolina-
style barbecue, fresh Southern-fried chicken, savory clam chowder,
hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad and -- as
always -- an assortment of delicious dishes from the kitchens of our
friends and neighbors as folks bring along a side dish or dessert to
share. Beer, wine, and soda will also be available for purchase. Please
join us on Saturday, November 25 from noon until 5:00 p.m. Tickets
are $25.00 and are available from any Council Officer or at the door.
Saint Mary will again be
participating in the
annual Thanksgiving
Bag Giveaway. Unlike previous
years where residents of
Tidewater Gardens came to us, the First
Baptist Church Bute Street Community
Center will be the distribution point for all
participants.
Empty bags with the list of food items will
be made available following Mass; the
$10.00 check or money order for turkeys
should be payable to the Basilica of St.
Mary. The due date for these bags is
Sunday, November 19 after the 12 Noon
Mass.
The Homeless Ministry
Due to the renovation of our church home, St. Mary’s Homeless Ministry will not be housing our homeless sisters and brothers this year. However, Blessed Sacrament has asked St. Mary’s to assist with the registration of the homeless guest during the program kick off week of, November 29th – December 5th. If you assisted with registration previously and would like to volunteer for one or more nights at Blessed Sacrament, please contact Jackie Ewing at 757-434-1987. Additionally, St. Mary’s Homeless Ministry would like to donate 100($5.00) McDonalds or Subway gift cards and 100 all day bus passes to Blessed Sacrament for the guests as a token of our love. If you would like to contribute to this effort, someone will be in the kitchen area collecting the cards or monetary donations after each Mass on November 12th, 19th and 26th.
May God continue to Bless us All!
