The Word This Week By now we are some distance away from Easter, but the season is still permeated

with the Easter message: Christ is risen, we are baptized in Him. But today a new

dimension of the story comes out: Easter is not complete until the risen Lord has

returned to the Father and sent the Holy Spirit. So, in the Gospel today we begin

two weeks of looking forward to the coming of that “Spirit of truth” which sets us

apart from the world.

This is a Spirit of power, which flows through the life of the Church, enabling its members to “proclaim the

Christ and, dwelling in our hearts, to live in the midst of the world’s slander and accusations. (Source:https://www.salfordliturgy.org.uk/easter4a.htm )

Currently we are just providing food. We also want to thank all of the

people who support the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society!

Letter from Archbishop Charles C. Thompson on

Reopening Churches

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

These few weeks of staying in place to fight the coronavirus, although a very short time frame in the grand scheme of things, has felt like ages for many. Though it has been difficult on practically everyone, as previously stated, the decision to close churches was made out of an abundance of caution.

While we continue to take great care and utilize the recommended precautions, we will soon begin the gradual process of reopening our churches and resuming the celebration of the Sacraments publicly.

Reopening our churches for private prayer and devotions and for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance will be a part of our first phase, and this will be possible beginning on Wednesday, May 13. In

the following week, beginning on Tuesday, May 19, the offering of weekday Masses and some other smaller celebrations may begin. Finally, we will return to the celebration of Masses for Sunday and the remainder of most of the postponed celebrations of the Sacraments. A decision has not been made

regarding the postponed celebrations of the Sacrament of Confirmation. As of now, all confirmation celebrations through May 31 are postponed. More information will be forthcoming.

Please understand that I am allowing, not mandating, that churches reopen on next Wednesday, May 13. In fact, local directives in some places may limit the reopening process of some churches. For those who

need more time, that is understandable. For those who prefer to provide the Sacrament of Reconciliation outdoors rather than inside, that is acceptable as well.

Some provisions for resuming public liturgical celebrations of Mass and other Sacraments are provided

with this letter. To be very clear: The dispensation from the obligation to participate at Mass remains in effect until August 15. Those who are 65 years of age and older as well as all vulnerable and sick persons are strongly encouraged to stay at home during this time. With

assurance of my prayers and best wishes, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Charles C. Thompson

Archbishop of Indianapolis

Meet Benjamin Popson

If you are kindly reading this, you may be curious about what this nonsense is and who is writing it, or maybe not. Regardless, let me introduce myself:

My name is Benjamin Popson. I am a seminarian of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis studying to be a parish priest. I will be following Fr. Ben around this summer at St. Lawrence and St. Mary’s learning about how to be a holy and joyful priest in a parish setting.

I am originally from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in New Albany—just down the Ohio—where I first received the sacraments. I am the third of eight children, and no doubt the coolest of the lot. I went to grade school at my home parish, attended Our Lady of Providence High School, and began my undergrad studying Industrial Engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette. The Lord bucked St. Paul off his horse; He subtly prodded me to ditch engineering for the priesthood. So, after a year and a half at Purdue, I transferred to Bishop Simon Bruté College-Seminary from where I just graduated at the beginning of this month. In the Fall, I will begin the last four years of my priestly formation at St. Meinrad Seminary.

When I’m not levitating from the church-pews in spiritual ecstasy, I enjoy playing tennis, watching baseball, target shooting, fishing, playing cards, and reading.

I am eager to meet you and look forward to spending time with you soon. Know that you and your families will be in my prayers, and please pray for me.

Peace,

Benjamin Popson

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: St. Mary's Prayer Shawl Ministry has been active despite the shutdowns caused by the virus. The ministry is carried out by devoted parishioners who make the shawls in their own homes, and we have several on hand. If you know of someone who faces ongoing or serious illness, please contact Anna in the parish office. We will do our best to get prayer shawls to

those who need them. May God bless those involved in this ministry and those who wear the shawls as they pray for God's comfort and care.

Plan for Reopening of Churches and Resuming the Celebration of Public Sunday and

Weekday Masses and the other Sacraments in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis

Update (05/14/2020): Archbishop Thompson and his staff are continuing to explore and evaluate all

the possible ways the public celebration of Mass may resume in the many different parts of the archdiocese. Because the conditions and local restrictions vary in different parts of the archdiocese and because of the complexities of navigating all of the requirements of opening our churches and restarting

public liturgical celebrations, all of the faithful are asked to only follow the timeline of and to attend the services at their home parish for the next month/until June 15th. This will enable parishes to more accurately assess the numbers of attendees and to communicate effectively with them before their

arrival. So, while parishes may resume the public celebration of Mass at slightly different times, all parishioners are asked to only go to their home parishes for the next month.
