Gajanan Refineries Pvt.Ltd., Mumbai, is due for com-missioning soon. It has a ca-pacity of 200 TPD for palm,sunflower and soyabean oil,and is located in RasayaniMIDC, Patalganga.

cakes, neutral oil and deoiled cakes to countries likeUS and Brazil. Today, if we look at the edu-cation sector, we have a lotof youngsters passing outof colleges as graduates

and post-graduates. But a matter ofconcern is the employability of thesestudents. Students get awarded withtheir degrees but they are not readyfor employment. These studentshave memorised what is taught incolleges, but they are far from get-ting ready for the workplace. But when wespoke to a student who graduatedand is now working with a corpo-rate, he said, "Actually the facultyneeds training in the trainers' pro-gram, so they can then impart therequired training to students.Adding a subject or curriculum doesnot fulfill the need." "The studentsare unaware of what corporates ex-pect and so is the faculty." Why donot corporates like you who are intraining train students? Don't yousee the need?"

WHERE IS THE GAP?Training imparted is mostly to

develop superficial skills just to helpin appearing for an interview andgetting a job. Such training does nottreat the cause. Thus, the benefit isshort-lived, because once the job be-gins, the weaknesses get exposed. Intimes of cutting-edge competition,there is no time for a gestation pe-riod to be a performer.

So the daunting question is howto bridge this gap?

The New York basedstudy examined the grow-ing numbers of small busi-nesses—especially new en-terprises and those run byyounger entrepreneurs—and found that many wereyet to adopt technology ina meaningful way. Thefindings could just as wellbe applicable to India.

“Technology could helplevel the playing field formany of the city’s smallbusinesses. By adoptingbasic technologies that aretaken for granted by largec o r p o r a t i o n s — f r o mGoogle ads and customermanagement software todigital payroll programsand point-of-sale sys-tems—small businessescould expand their cus-tomer base, reduce theircosts and become more ef-ficient. Technology canspringboard some smallfirms to the next level andhelp others simply im-prove their profit marginsenough to survive,” the re-port says.

“What we learned is thattechnology is no longer anoption, but an essentialtool for businesses to re-main competitive. This isnot just the case for largecorporations and high-techstart-ups, but for nearly allsmall businesses—fromthe corner bodega facingmore competition fromchain grocery and con-venience stores and phar-macies to the neighbor-hood restaurant that needsto attract diners from out-side the immediate neigh-borhood to survive,” thereport adds.
