Club News Center Wildcats
Hello fellow 4-H’ers. Here is a sum-mary of what happened since last meeting. First off, for Meals on Wheels, we decorated and delivered 188 Christmas lunch bags and 62 winter ones. As for the nursing home (Golden Living), we made 863 Christmas cards for the residents. We also made holi-day stockings and delivered stuffed ani-mals as well. We also decorated 73 Christmas place mats for Hospice. In early December, Center Wildcats mem-bers and parents met at Family House for decorating. More than 200 people came to the Junior Leaders ice skating party. At our January meeting, we tasted different kinds of yogurt and played a fun game called “shake it up” before dismissing. Be sure to read the Pandemonium newsletter for important information. We were told to take home any 2017 records that were still there and keep it for future reference. Respectfully submitted, Christine Holmgren
Jackson Volunteers
The Jackson Volunteers 4-H group had their January meeting at the Jackson Elementary School. We started the meeting with pledges and an icebreak-er. For our icebreaker, we stated our name and our favorite Christmas pre-sent we received. We then moved onto old business. It consisted of ice skating which took place on January 8th. For new business, we went over 4-H enroll-ment and bowling at Inman’s from 4-6
on February 9th. We decided on Janu-ary 19th that we would bake cookies for the troops for our community service. We then went over Treasurer's Report, Secretary's Report, and Health and Safety. We finished the meeting with recreation. Next meeting February 1 at 6:30 p.m.—Reporter Grace Ahrendt
Lakeshore Drifters
Our meeting was held on January 8, 2018 at the William E. Urschel Pavilion during the 4-H Ice Skating Party & En-rollment Bash. Remember to bring in your socks in for the sock drive. Our next meeting will be held on February 12.—Reporter, Bryce Biddle
Liberty Sunsetters
The Liberty Sunsetter’s first meeting of the year was held on January 21, 2018, at Valparaiso University. After pledges and roll call, reports were given. For health and safety, Jacob Watkins dis-cussed how to prevent catching the flu. On to new business, club members will be attending the V.U. basketball game on Sunday, February 11th, 3 pm at the ARC. Payments were due this month (members: $7 parents $12). Our Febru-ary nursing home visit will be on the 10th; 2 pm, at Chesterton Manor. We will be handing out Valentines’ Day cards and playing BINGO. As a club, we made the cards during this meeting. Next month, we will be having our reg-ular meeting, but also a dance party. Dress formal if you’d like. Food will be provided, and officers will be bringing desserts. The next meeting will be held
on February 18th, 2018 at 3 pm in the Community Room at Valparaiso Univer-sity. ~Mallory Morrison, Club Reporter
Morgan Hustling Hoosiers
The Morgan Hustling Hoosiers cookie sale December 2nd was a big success! THANK YOU to all who donated, helped work, or cleaned up. We had enough cookies to set some aside for donating. We also made Christmas cards and wrapped gifts to get ready for our nurs-ing home visit. December 9th was our club's fuzzy sock exchange and nursing home caroling trip. Everyone had fun, and we ended the day at Dairy Queen for ice cream. Thank you, Mrs. King for getting us around safely. It was a snowy day. Our next meeting will be the Fa-ther/Daughter banquet in February. Correction to the new officers list, Rec-reation- Kaitlyn Whitaker and Courtney Epler, Health and Safety- Regan Weitzel and Gabie Rubarts. Wishing everyone a safe and happy 2018 from the Morgan Hustling Hoosiers! - Katie Henderson
Pleasant Pioneers
The Pleasant Pioneers held there meet-ing on January 11th in the Kouts High School cafeteria. We had our installa-tion of officers. We talked about help-ing out the lions club; we made meals on wheels bags for Valentine’s Day. Thank you to Kristle Crider for showing the club how to make a bow. The next meeting will be February 8th. Hope to see everyone there. Reporter- Stephanie Boone

4-H Animal Ethics Program for Parents, Volunteers, & Mentors The Indiana 4-H Animal Ethics Program
will be going live soon. The main goal
of the 4-H livestock program is to en-
sure 4-H members are learning to ethi-
cally raise, care for and exhibit their
animals to meet current food safety
guidelines. Parents and other adult
mentors play a significant role in this
learning experience for youth. This
online 4-H Animal Ethics Program was
developed to provide educational tools
to the adults who are working with 4-H
livestock members. Learn more at

JUNIOR PORK DAY! Junior Pork Day is scheduled for Saturday, March 3, 2018. It will be in the new Creighton Hall of Animal Science (270 S Russell Street, West Lafayette, IN 47907). Registration is from 8 am to 9 am (Eastern time) with the program beginning at 9 am and should be over by 3 pm. The cost is $5 with lunch included. Youth will have the opportunity to learn about various areas of swine production, learn to evaluate live animals and cuts of pork as well as hone their swine showing skills with the showmanship clinic. All ages are welcome. A flyer with agenda will be available soon. Turn on your notifications for www.facebook.com/PorterCounty4H so you don’t miss any of our updates! And/or contact Joan at [email protected] and she’ll share more info as soon as it is available!
Dear 4-H Livestock Project Members: Beginning this year, to exhibit beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, meat goats, dairy goats, poultry, and/or rabbits, Indiana 4-H members throughout the state must be certified through the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) education program. Keep in mind that in 1902 4-H was founded as an educational program! While this is a new requirement, it should not be viewed as just another rule, but rather as an important educational opportunity for 4-H livestock members. Making this an exhibition rule is how Indiana 4-H is ensuring that 4-H members learn about quality assurance (though actually the program has nothing to do with animal exhibition). We are requiring this program so youth learn best management practices with their animals. The YQCA program will:
• Ensure that youth livestock exhibitors are better prepared to be ambassadors for animal agriculture. • Ensure that animals from youth livestock programs are treated with the utmost care. • Ensure that 4-H members are contributing to a safe, wholesome food supply for consumers. • Enhance the future of the livestock industry so that today’s youth producers can become more informed
producers, consumers, and/or employees of the agriculture and food industry. This annual education program can be completed via online modules at a cost to you of $12; or you can opt to attend an in-person training session. Though the cost of the in-person registration is typically $3 we are happy to announce that for 2018, in-person training programs held in Porter County will be FREE to Porter County 4-H members! (If your farm or business would be interested in sponsoring the YQCA program, please contact me.) This program is replacing the National Pork Board’s Youth PQA Plus program that was funded by the national Pork Checkoff and that had been required of swine members for the past 15-20 years. I am completing my certification to teach in-person trainings and I plan to present in-person training sessions at least twice to accommodate our livestock project members. Additionally, the Dairy project has just set a date of March 11th at 1:00 p.m. for a project workshop that includes YQCA (more details on that will be shared soon) and other superintendents have been offered the same opportunity. As I continue to learn more about YQCA and determine how and when we will be facilitating it in our county, I will keep you updated, I will also be posting updates at http://bit.ly/2018PorterCoYQCA. Additionally, general information about YQCA can be found at http://yqca.org. Should you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected] or 465-3555. Sincerely, Joan M. CITIZENSHIP WASHINGTON FOCUS June 30th-July 7th, 2018
Program Overview
4-H member must be at least 15 years of age and in 9th grade or higher by June 15. This one time trip is an exciting experience for 4-H members and other youth to go to the nation's capital and learn more about the meaning of citizenship. Listening, learning, sharing, receiving, caring and touring combine to provide a deeper respect and understanding for our American heritage and the principles, processes and structures of the U.S. government. The trip to Washington, D.C., will be made by Purdue charter bus. Young people acquire increased motivation and skills for dealing with contemporary social issues and for taking leadership in community development, government affairs, and related projects when they return home. Each delegate will take part in workshops on contemporary issues and topics such as international affairs, human relations, government, ecology and conservation, family life and dating, community development, drama and creative expression, economics, agricultural policy, leadership, and careers. In addition, advanced training sessions are scheduled to provide in-depth concentration on one topical area such as community development, heritage, economics, politics, environment and ecology, human relations, communications, family life and dating, advanced citizenship-seminar policy, and others of current interest.
Learn More Learn more about Citizenship Washington Focus and read testimonials from previous attendees by visiting the website at: http://www.citizenshipwashingtonfocus.org. Also, delegates will stay at the National 4-H Conference Center, you can check it out at: http://www.4hcenter.org.
Registration Cost The cost of registration for the successful applicant(s) will be shared by the 4-Her and the Porter County 4-H Council. Registration cost for CWF is more than $1600 per delegate. The successful applicant will be asked to pay $200 out-of-pocket, and the 4-H Council will pay the remainder. (If selected and unable to pay $200, we will work with you to still allow the trip to be possible.)
Through the following application process, no more than two Porter County 4-H members will be selected to represent our county at this national 4-H event. (Each delegate will need a minimum of approximately $100 for out-of-pocket expenses during the weeklong trip.)
Once selected, the successful applicant(s) must submit their $200 registration fee to the Extension Office. Any individual who agrees to attend, and then backs out, will owe the 4-H Council the entire $1600 registration cost.
Transportation The selected delegates will be responsible for their own transportation to central Indiana (in recent years the departure point has been the Boone County Fairgrounds in Lebanon) where they will join the rest of the Indiana delegation on a Purdue motorcoach that will transport the group to the greater Washington, DC area.
Application Process Current Porter County 4-H members who are high school students and will be 15 years of age or older at time of the trip are eligible to apply. Previous participants in the CWF trip are not eligible to reapply. Please apply by completing the following application and submitting it to the Extension Office no later than Friday February 23rd, 2018.
