President’s Messageby Pres. Gordon Williams

Happy August to all!I hope all of you had a great Fourth of July holiday and managed to keep it between the lines! This message will be fairly short and be predominately about whining for volunteers.

In September, we have our annual White Glove Concours and that is an extremely volunteer centric activity. If you have volunteered for the concours

in the past, or if you are interested in volunteering for the first time, this is a great event with which to get your feet wet.

Please contact Norm Follis @ [email protected] for more information. There is lots to do so all different levels of volunteer involvement are needed!

Second, August is the month for our annual charity event, The Hearts and Garages Tour. This is a great event designated for our club charity, The Semper Fi Fund and our biggest fundraiser of the year. Peggy Huddleston has been vigorously working away and searching for garages and I believe she is still in need of one or two. If you have a garage you would like to showcase, shoot Peggy an email at [email protected]. Lastly, and in the same vein, one of our members has agreed to match all donations to the Semper Fi Fund up to $2,500.00. This will be presented to our

charity along with last years donation check while on the tour at the dinner garage. Contact Peggy if you are feeling generous.

Don’t forget we are still looking for a couple of generous spirited folks to run for the Club’s Board of Directors at the end of the year. Contact any current Board member if you would like to discuss the responsibilities involved.

As always, thank you to all of our members and associates for their participation in our events. Please don’t let your inability to devote a large amount of your time to the club keep you from volunteering ANY of your time to the club! And - Please take the time to say “thank you” to one of our volunteers this month

I’ll see you on the road!Gordo

School’s outThere ain’t no doubtWe’ll be takin’ the Porsche out!

It’s tight for kids in the back of a CabrioletBut with a Cayenne, they’ve room to playSo at home there’s no reason to stay!

With the Orange Coast RegionT’is the perfect seasonTwo doors or four, time for leavin!

And what are you waiting for?Exactly the point, whether your Porsche has two doors or four, we have the tour. Or we have an event that you might enjoy with your club members. The OCR is part of the cryptically named “Zone 8 “ of the Porsche Club of America (PCA). If “Zone 8” puts you in mind of hidden Air Force bases in Arizona, don’t be alarmed. It does include Arizona, in fact, but it also includes much of the west and southwest of the United States.

There are 13 zones in the PCA and within those zones are Regions. While the zones are numbered, the regions usually carry names. Ours is the Orange Coast Region, which you often see abbreviated to OCR. It does save ink and time after all. Other regions have colorful names such as Bluegrass, Alpine Mountain and First Settlers. As a card carrying member of the PCA, you can

actually go to any event in any region. I have visited a few while traveling and always had a welcome and a chance to visit and talk.

Go to the PCA site; http://www.pca.org/Home.aspx sometime and have a look around. While there, visit our own OCR site at http://www.pcaocr.com. Look around there as well. You’ll see all of the activities both locally and regionally. I don’t know if “Zonally” is a word, but you could also look at activities by Zone.

So Long and all thatWell, it has finally come to pass. I spent the last day in my office on June 28th, 2013. I left with a paycheck, always nice, and three boxes of pictures, memento’s, tchotchkes, and a head full of emotions. The employees had a potluck for me including chicken mole, one of my favorites, and we hugged and said goodbye. I had a very nice dinner Friday night with local friends including fellow

Porsche 911 Restoration ManualBy Lindsay Porter & Peter Morgan,Published by Haynes Publishing, UK.

Book Review:

Review by Bruce Herrington

This book was first published in 1988, so it does not deal with the more modern cars. The eighty’s vintage does not make the book obsolete, because few of the later 911s need restoration. This book has been reprinted virtually every year since the first reprint in 1989, which attests to its usefulness.

Don’t get the wrong idea from the title – this book is more about repairing to working condition than about restoring to factory authentic, a word that doesn’t even appear in the book. True, there are comments in the text about ‘the last year of feature x’, and references to ‘post 69’, ‘pre ‘72’ etc. But there is also a Chapter 7: Modifications, which is mostly about bodywork but does include sections on Engines, Suspension, and Brakes. There are even detailed instructions for retrofitting ‘Carrera’ chain tensioners to pre-’84 engines, without having to remove the engine from the car.

Though hard-covered, the book is ‘shop manual’ sized and the almost ‘newsprint’ paper and B&W illustrations are reminiscent of the olde tyme Haynes shop manuals from when some of us grew up. Like those shop manuals, there is a wealth of information inside. The working environment apparent in the pictures is much more like a home garage than the sanitary shop spaces apparent in Porsche Factory manuals.

Porsche 911 Restoration Manual, begins with a brief history of Porsche, comprehensive but hardly the definitive resource. Then there is a chapter on buying, which provides general philosophy and a series of photos attempting to illustrate the differences between various model/years. The pictures are followed by text that discusses the various changes over the years. The last part of the ‘Buying’ chapter gives specific illustrations of problem areas on bodywork subjected

to English climate, something to make us really appreciate our ‘California Cars’. There is a very specific narrative about what (and how) to check for when considering a Porsche purchase. Again, most of that applies to English (or California beach) climate.

The Bodywork Chapter has very specific text and detailed illustrations, many of which show human hands at work. It is focused on metal replacement for various rust prone areas, not about ‘panel beating’. The presentation is focused more on what to do than on how to do it. That being said, some tricks-of-the-trade are presented to either help perform the task or prevent unanticipated ‘disasters’ occurring to those who have not done these procedures before. The brief tutorial on leading is as informative as any this reviewer has ever read.

The Engine and Transmission Chapter gives great detail on the removal, disassembly, wear checking and reassembly of the engine. Transmission work, it advises, should be left to experts who have the specialized tools required.

The Mechanical and Electrical Components Chapter covers fuel system, brakes, front and rear suspensions, ignition, lights and torque settings.

The Porsche 911 Restoration Manual is quite readable, even without parts in hand, for anyone with a mechanical inclination. The introduction also encourages owners who hire someone to do their mechanical work done, to read

the book to understand the complexity of the procedures being performed on their car.

With 256 well illustrated 8-1/2 x 11” pages, it is a valuable book for any owner or enthusiast of air-cooled 911s, especially the SC and earlier cars, even if they haven’t yet started to do any of their own mechanical work. Published at $42.95, Motorbooks.com now has it on sale for $31.21, making it too good of a bargain to pass up.

Love Among the Porsches Story by Karen Jensen

Featured Members: Ron & Karen Jensen

(Continued on Page 11)

I was Ron Jensen’s second love. When I met him, Ron was already driving his first Porsche. His love of cars began when he was a child; he still has many of the toy and model cars he acquired as he grew up. In the collection are a couple of Schuco toy cars that were made in the post-World War II U.S. zone of Germany. The models were quite advanced for the era, with working parts and a horn that (still!) honks. That love of wheels grew as Ron did, inspiring him to own his first car, a Ford Fairlane, when he was 16. Ron was born and raised in San Bernardino and the proximity to local mountains and the call to drive those roads beckoned. The Fairlane took him around these curves and turns committing him to love driving.

While Ron was studying at UCSD, his roommate and close friend John owned a Porsche 914. This would mark the beginning of a lifelong journey into Porsches and other German automobiles. While in college Ron and John would take road trip adventures when the studies allowed, but more importantly to see just how fast these cars would go!

After college, Ron bought his first Porsche, a brown 1966 912. This 4-cylinder model allowed him to do much of the maintenance himself like oil changes & valve adjustments since it was a simple design and could use VW parts in many cases. He quickly made friends with this car, meeting a

‘twin’ while having lunch at Casita Marita in San Bernardino. Randy Briggs owned a brown 1973 911T and they would park side by side during lunch hours, both the cars and the boys! It wasn’t unusual for the two of them to drive together, each in his own car, through the local mountains, either for the drive or to have lunch or dinner in Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear. One of their favorite stops was Lloyd’s Restaurant in Running Springs for a piece of their homemade pie.

Unfortunately, the 912’s structural integrity was tested when a Chrysler came over a hill on the wrong side of the road and landed on top of the 912 with Ron in the driver’s seat. The 912 held the Chrysler completely suspended off the ground … got to love that German engineering! Ron had to crawl out of the window since the doors were wedged closed, but the passenger compartment was intact, and so was Ron. The repairs on the 912 were so extensive that Ron purchased a BMW 2002 for the interim drive. After 8 months without a Porsche, Ron decided to buy a blue 1973 911T thinking the 912 would never be completed. The new ride saw many roads in California, including Hwy 1.

I met Ron through mutual friends, and as we dated the Porsche was our chariot to many adventures. We once took it on a wine buying trip where the amount of wine purchased exceeded the

available room to transport. I was a good sport and crawled into the back seat so that the wine would fit! Wine collecting and tasting continue to be a pastime we enjoy together today, though we’ve made other arrangements to transport the wine, and I sit in the front! I passed the ultimate test as girlfriend when I was a passenger on one of the Hwy 1 southbound adventures and the objective was to see how fast we could make it from Big Sur to Cambria; let’s just say it was a white knuckle adventure, but I passed!

During this time the Porsche bug bit me too, and I bought a blue 1973 914 to drive all over Southern California as I sold copiers from Santa Monica to Pomona. I remember spending weekends in my parents’ driveway polishing and detailing that car since I spent so many hours in it every day. The previous owner even exclaimed how much better it looked than when he owned it!

Ron & I were married and soon bought a home in Riverside, half way to both of our jobs. Soon after we sold both Porsches as homeownership became the priority. Our household would be sans Porsche automobiles for the next 25 years, but the commitment to once again own one was constant. In the

Ron’s first Porsche, a 1966 912The trend of blue Porsches started with the 1973 911 and continued with Karen’s first Porsche, a blue 914, very similar to this web photo

meantime, the household did acquire a German—only it was a Schnauzer! We welcomed a new Schnauzer puppy, German of course, and the search for a name ensued. All friends and family weighed in on what her name should be, and one friend commented that we no longer had Porsches and the puppy had four-on-the floor so her name needed to be “Porsche.” Well, that name stuck, and for the next 16 years her cornering and speed abilities kept her name proud!

During these 25 years, both our careers flourished and business traveling was a constant, not leaving us much time for weekend fun driving. Several moves, all in southern California, brought us to Orange County in 1983 where we settled in our current home in Orange with a view overlooking Disneyland, Angels Stadium and Catalina.

Ron never gave up looking at Porsches, the late 80’s models being his preferred style, and finally found a gem in August 2004. The venetian blue 1988 911 Targa was a true find. It was in perfect condition, original, and with only 65,000 original miles. We very soon joined the Porsche Club looking forward to many driving adventures. One of the first club events Ron participated in was the Julian run in November 2004, this time without me since I was recovering from cancer surgery and the quick turns might not have been very comfortable. Instead, our godson Brett went along

for the ride, and what a ride it was! At 19, he had never experienced a ride like this one and gained a whole new appreciation for Uncle Ron and his driving abilities! Brett even tried to drive the Porsche while in Julian, but after a few white knuckle tries gladly turned the wheel back to Ron.

It wasn’t hard to settle into fun runs and PCA activities over the next few years, finding the time along with the continued busy careers. Ron now works for Toyota in Torrance after 24 years with Nissan (they decided to move to Nashville, TN in 2006). He is an attorney and specializes in contract negotiations for the marketing department which has some great stories; stop him and ask sometime. I have been in sales & marketing my entire career, most recently as Director of Marketing for a company in Irvine. I also recently earned another degree in Social Media Marketing at UCI to add to my resume, and have been using those newly acquired skills as a small business consultant.

On a recent road trip to Paso Robles in the ’88 911 Targa; we had a near-miss-experience on Hwy 46 heading west that started the discussion about owning a

newer Porsche with airbags for longer trips. Soon the search began again to add another Porsche to the family. In July 2010 we bought a navy blue 2003 996 Carrera from a private party in Long Beach. You know how life seems to be six degrees of separation? The owners were unknowingly connected to both of us. The man we bought it from was a vendor connection of Ron’s at Nissan and his wife was a fellow employee during the 20 years I was at Xerox. Fate? Maybe, but soon there were two Porsches in our garage and both blue!

Oh, and a slight mention that the Brigg’s and the Jensen’s are once again reunited with Porsches. Randy bought a

Traverse City Michigan was this year’s site of the annual Porsche Parade in late June 2013. It was also the site of the 1989 Porsche Parade. Seven hour drive from Chicago, 2 hour drive to the Upper Michigan Peninsula and on the edge of Southern Canada, Traverse City is way off the beaten path. So what’s the attraction? The deep blue skies, natural green beauty of the forests that surround Traverse City and the Grand Traverse Bay that empties into northern Lake Michigan. And don’t forget the friendly welcoming people of the area who were more than happy to have the national Porsche Parade descend on them for a week.

A 40% chance of rain throughout the preceding weekend and on the day of the Monday concours threatened the event and worried the participants. But as the locals say, this is Northern Michigan. Any kind of weather can happen in the summer. The Grand Traverse Hotel and Spa provided indoors air-conditioned concours preparation in their huge tennis court facilities augmented by four other

outdoor tents. All coordinated perfectly by Skip Carter from Zone 8.

45 degrees north latitude, halfway between the Equator and the North Pole as the locals brag, means that it stays daylight past 9:30pm every night. This gives the concours participants plenty of light to work into the night preparing their cars. Garages and tents were open until 11pm each evening.

Monday, June 24, the day of the concours brought mainly sunny skies and no rain. 200 plus cars were on display for judging on the Grand Traverse Hotel’s golf course. A new “Street” class was added this year, which helped increase the attendance. A Historic Porsche display was also a part of the show.

AUGUST 2013 1515

I wanted to do some follow up on my article 911 and 930 Brake History from the last two months. First I must give credit to Garey Cooper and Maryann Marks. They have to take my compilation of technical mess and make it read to make sense! I apparently sent a draft that should have gotten no further than my own PC, but it got through and I am sorry to have sent out some redundancy in my article.

The idea of upgrading to better and bigger brakes to match bigger engines doesn’t take a genius to figure out. Simple enough. What caused me to write about it is the revelation of how exceptionally well my new upgraded brakes work in everyday driving and especially those boost blasts!

I also wanted to show a BREMBO technical picture and explanation on their new brake Disc (rotor) designs that are available today.

The 1967 Porsche vented discs in the 911, had a one piece disc that is actually cast as two disc surfaces joined by vanes. In 1967 the vanes were made straight out from the disc hub to the outer edge. As the disc rotate it drew air and

dust from the inside and blow it out –like a fan. Which it actually is! This offered dramatic cooling benefits and only later as Porsches became heavier, faster did the 930 Turbo adapt the racing 917 much larger vented discs brakes and installed new discs with new ‘curved’ vanes that had a swept curve pattern that give the effect of a longer vane and a even stronger air flow.

These discs also featured “cross-drilled” holes drilled through the disc and partially through the vane. The cross-drillings helped help cool the disc. It also gave improved brake efficiency as during brake application the brake pad pushing against the disc pushed dirt, brake pad dust, and water into the cross-drilled holes and into the vane where air flow, then blown it all out the disc.

These curved vanes look like a swirl when seen with the wheel removed. The vanes and cross drilled holes curve outward and rearward of the direction of rotation. For this reason the 930 turbo has a specific disc for each wheel.

Over the years these holes were just drilled. Then a cast tube was formed into the vane. The cast holes can clog with brake dust and dirt over time, and reduce the cooling effect. Service Note: When servicing some well used 930 turbo Discs I have spent nearly a half day re-drilling, cleaning, these cross-drill holes. I use a drill press and after it is all done I have smooth and clean holes. In road and

track use, they stay cleaner and haven’t clogged. I also chamfer the holes with a 45 degree countersink bit as well. It takes time and patience though.

Back in 1985, we imported a special friend of the factory light-weight 1979 930 Turbo. This was originally a R.o.W (Swiss delivery) 1979 930 Turbo that became the Swiss National Time Trial champion and for several years held the Swiss National Hill Climb Championship as well.

I received an interesting education doing a complete D.O.T. and E.P.A. compliance and passed/certified all the Federal and state compliances. My bonus reward was a week-end at Riverside Raceway, a time trial on the long course. This was a fabulous machine and I was eager to drive a real performance 930 at Riverside. I was

nearly in heaven. However, some dreams have consequences. The 930 did everything fantastically. Well, except for the brakes! They ‘shuddered’ at high speed and just did not slow very well! They worked fine on streets and freeways, even after a boost blast, but not for continued track use.

Than again I was told, “real racers don’t’ need brakes!” I wasn’t about to leave, so I drove at 90% of what I was driving before. It was fun and I learned a lot about the 930’s fabulous handling.

Maybe all the years of driving with underpowered 2.0L engines, lousy brakes, skinny anti-roll bars, and tires helped. But the brakes were

OH! Those 5 little wordsWhether you own a 911, 914, 944, 930, 996, 997 or any other model it matters not! Once the motor is out of the car for whatever reason there is ALWAYS something the owner would like to change, add, or upgrade. Just ask Christian Van Fleet, Rod Taylor, Eric Budai, Jerry Griffin, Kris Scheussler James Buck or any other member of the OCR that has had the motor out of their beloved Porsche. I will guarantee without exception something was upgraded… and now my GT2 motor is out!

First Upgrades: Braking and HandlingFor the last 7 years modifications to the GT2 have mostly focused on improving the Porsche’s braking and handling. The GT2 is fitted with StopTech’s full race STR brake system. The rotors are larger than stock, slotted 388mm front and the rears are slotted 345mm. The brake calipers are 6 pistons at the front and 4 pistons on the rear. Whether at Laguna Seca, California Speedway or Willow Springs, we have never experienced any brake fade.

On the suspension side the Dynamic Triple Adjustable Shocks can be adjusted to improve the car’s grip and handling at any track or Auto-X configuration or surface. The shocks are sent to Haas Automotive about every two years to be rebuilt and sometimes revalved to accommodate changes made to the spring rates. The front and rear sway bars are fully adjustable. The front bar is a unique blade design from Ankeny Racing that is adjustable through an infinite range as you turn the blades to firm or soften the front suspension to adjust handling. This sway bar can be adjusted in about 3 minutes! The balance of the suspension is similar to most Porsche Cup Cars. It is a combination of factory Cup Car parts, GMG steering components and RSS’s – Tarmac Series lower control arms that are all re-buildable.

This last benefit re-buildable becomes very important from a cost stand point. Over the years the GT2 has been

driven by my wife Lisa, my son Michael and myself in POC Road Racing, Time Trials, DE Track Days and Auto-X events. We have accumulated well over 12,000 track miles. The suspension and brakes have been rebuilt a couple times. The car was only driven on the street the first year for about 2,000 miles. This is no garage queen!

SO! Last month when the motor came out of the GT2 to repair the cooling tubes that had become unglued I thought about those 5 little words, “While the motor is out!” After spending about 5 hours on the internet doing some research, I sat down with Allen Ward, the Service Manager at GMG, Global Motorsport Group, and discussed my options. My priorities were not necessarily more horsepower. (OK, maybe a little) I just wanted more mid-range torque and a more responsive motor. Here was an excuse to at least look into possible horsepower upgrades. But where to start?

I have known James Sofronas and Fabryce Kutyba, owners of GMG-Global Motorsport Group, since they started performance tuning Porsches in a 3,000 sq. ft. shop years ago. GMG has been the Series Support Sponsor for OCR’s driving events and an advertiser in the Pandemonium for many years. When you walk around the now 32,000 sq ft GMG facility, you see it all, from Panameras, GT3s, Caymans, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Audis and BMWs in for a normal service, to 997 GT2RS street cars pushing 850 horse power to World Challenge winning GT3 Porsche Cup Cars and GMGs, as well as the current weapon of choice, the full race Audi R8s that are leading the SCCA World Challenge Series. I was like a kid in a candy store!

Back To RealityThe starting point for the motor was a given when it was discovered one of the turbos had a couple blades that were damaged. As the GT2’s turbo charger blades spin at over 10,000 rpm perfect

balance is imperative. Options were to rebuild the existing turbos, replace them with a pair of new stock turbos or look at the latest technology. We decided to go with the latest technology. The replacement turbos of choice were the Tial Alpha GT3071Rs. These little pieces of Porsche “Jewelry” (see photo) are direct bolt on units. These have to be special ordered and take about 3 to 4 weeks for delivery. However, they come with ball bearing internals, billet aluminum blades that spool up much faster than the factory turbos helping improve mid-range as well as top end power, and they are also water cooled. This was the beginning of the “slippery slope”. Well OK, I kind of had a wish list of performance upgrades

The Porsche turbo motors have long been a fairly popular platform to easily

Summer is here and a busy one it is at that. My family just got back from the Parade, which is always a very busy week for us. This year was no exception, but it was a fantastic week. One of the best parades ever, if I may say so. The weather, the venue, the location, the events; it was all terrific. Noteworthy this year was having two, yes, two; new car introductions. We had the privilege of being the first to see the 50th Anniversary edition of the 911 as well as the new GT3. Incredible cars, and an incredible opportunity that speaks of the great relationship we have with PCNA.

Also very exciting for me, as Zone Rep, was the presentation to Hans-Peter Porsche of a poster of the 50 Years of 911 celebration that Zone 8 pulled together at this year’s Festival of Speed in April. That was an amazing feat whose significance was obvious to Hans-Peter; I think he was truly grateful and really appreciative of the gift. (By the way, this poster is available to PCA members. If you would like one, please let me know. The price is TBD at the time of this writing but I should know by the time you read this.)

When you consider the distance to Traverse City, we had a small but still very good turnout of Zone 8 members. As usual they put in a strong performance, with the following list of winners. (If I missed anybody, I apologize!)

Parade 2014Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock somewhere, you surely know that next year’s Parade is in Monterey, June 15-21, 2014. Keep your eye out for opening day of registration, Tuesday, March 11. There is a lot of buzz and excitement about the return of the Parade to the west coast, and Monterey is always an outstanding destination. Expectations are that this will be a attendance record setting Parade! Be there, you won’t regret it!

Escape 2013In the meantime, however, don’t forget about Escape to Los Angeles! Anybody who went to Escape to Flagstaff a few years ago knows (or will tell you) how much fun these weekend long club getaways are. increase horsepower. The key is to get more air into the motor, mix it with plenty of fuel, let it explode inside the cylinder and get the spent gases out of the engine. Can you tell I’m no engineer? However, you get the basic idea. The more efficiently air and fuel get into the engine, explode and exit the motor, the more power. Well, there is also some special tuning of the very sophisticated electronic ignition system that makes it all come together. We will discuss more on the special tuning session at GIAC’s Irvine facility next month.

Motor UpgradesTo help increase the amount of air and accelerate the air flow, the factory intake tubes were replaced with the well known EVOM constant radius/diameter tubes. The boost tubes were replaced with GMG silicone tubes and connected to the pressure side of the new Tial Alpha Turbos, which force more air into the motor. To increase the fuel supply, larger Bosch 640 CC fuel injectors were installed. The injectors are fed by a high output Bosch 44 liter per hour fuel pump. To help minimize back pressure, the factory headers were replaced with GMG’s WC exhaust headers (more jewelry) and the GMG 3” WC exhaust system was replaced with GMG’s new 3 ½” center exit exhaust. (See photos)

The motor was reassembled with all the new parts by Tony Thompson, the GMG Tech that is assigned to my car, and was ready to be installed back in the GT2. I have a lot of faith in Tony’s skill as a mechanic. He loves his work and his attention to detail is amazing! Prior to installing the motor, the clutch

and flywheel were inspected and with over 10,000 track miles they were worn and ready to be replaced. The same Sach Sport Clutch was installed and the flywheel was rebuilt and balanced.

Once back together, the GT2 was rolled into the “Dyno Room”. Kyle Millikin is responsible for the Dyno testing. It was strapped down to run and test the motor on the GMG Dyno. The engine was fired up and everything ran fine. No air, water or oil leaks and with the stock and Hammer GIAC software the motor ran great. A sign of what was to come next month was when the GT2 started spinning the rear tires on the dyno drums. Kyle showed me the initial dyno results for the horsepower and torque readings. Now I know the number “6” in some cultures is good and in other cultures is it bad. However, when you’re talking triple digit rear wheel horsepower and torque figures for a street car, “6” is a good first number.

In summary, the GT2 motor has had the cooling tubes welded in place and “while the motor is out” we upgraded the intake system, turbos and exhaust system.

What’s Next?At a GMG open house earlier this year I

had a conversation with Garrett, owner of GIAC, a software engineering company with over 20 years of tuning performance cars. GAIC had performed the original tune on the GT2 five years earlier. Garrett suggested, when complete, I bring it by their new Irvine facility as they have a new software program that should help meet my goal of more midrange torque. OH!… and a little more horse power. As I complete this article I’m anticipating next week’s session on the GIAC dyno. This is where the GIAC technicians will perform their magic. Stay tuned for next month.

The Porsche turbo motors have long been a fairly popular platform to easily increase horse power. The key is to get more air into the motor, mix it with plenty of fuel, let it explode inside the cylinder and get the spent gases out of the engine. Can you tell I’m no engineer☺. However, you get the basic idea. The more “efficiently” air and fuel get into the engine, “explode” and exit the motor the more power. Well, there is also some “special tuning” of the very sophisticated electronic ignition system that makes it all come together. We will discuss more on the “special tuning” session at GIAC’s Irvine facility next month.

a disappointment. WHY? It was then that I recalled that the brake discs were reversed. That is, the left discs were installed on the right sides, right discs installed on left side. On all four corners?

After replacing the discs, as they were found to be nearly at wear limits, we discovered the cross-drilled holes were full of rust, dirt and totally clogged. All of them.

We also later discovered that the

Swiss owner drove his 930 Light-Weight DAILY from Switzerland to France, over and through the mountains, in rain, snow, ice or sun shine! He loved driving his 930.

Apparently he realized his brakes almost always remained TOO COLD in winter driving, so, he simple reversed the discs for winter driving.

The lesson was that a better pad for winter sport diving would have been

nice, but in 1979 brake pads were limited for the rare 930 brakes. You either had a soft (disc wearing) stock pad or a hard racing metal type pad.

Today brake systems designs, affordability and choice of pads are greatly improved.

We like responses! Any comments, ideas or differing opinions –pleas inquire.

Sharing The Day with Dad! Auto-X Corner:

Father’s Day came early for some Dads on June 9, 2013. This year Father’s Day actually fell on June 16, 2013, but you would not have noticed with so many Fathers out with their sons or daughters at the track. There is nothing quite as special for a Father as being able to share something exceptional with his son or daughter.

I have been fortunate enough to bring my daughter Allison, who learned how to drive at our autocross events. I first brought her in February of 2012 for our annual driver’s education event for new drivers. This is a great event for those that want to learn the dynamic effects of the car they drive in a safe setting. Allison attended almost all of the autocross events last year and several this year. Most of the time, she helps me with registration. It has been great sharing this experience with her. My son Brandon is next in line to learn how to drive.

We had just around 100 participants driving Porsches, Corvettes, BMWs, Hondas, Miatas, Mercedes, one Fiero, a Subaru, Nissans, a VW, Mini Coopers, a

Scion, an Audi and even a 1965 Pontiac GTO, which I thought would feel more comfortable at a drag strip. No matter what you drove you were bound to have a fun time. Even so, sometimes problems come up.

Such was the case when one of the water cooled Porsches busted something in the cooling system and dripped coolant over part of the course. This delayed the running until our quick and fearless crew cleaned up the mess. Then it was back to racing.

Let’s take a look at some of the final timed results between Fathers and their sons or daughters. Pierre Maurier came out with his sons Shaan and Sharkey. Pierre and Shaan are regular instructors at the autocross events, but lately Sharkey has been coming along. Pierre’s

time was 67.428 driving a 1996 BMW M3. Sharkey’s time was 71.681, driving the same car. The records show that Shaan did not record a final timed run. Way to go Dad.

Henry Bjoin was out with his son Nick. Henry and Nick are also regular instructors at our autocross events. Henry’s time was 64.034, driving a 1998 BMW 328is. Nick’s time was 66.422, driving a 2008 Honda S2000. Way to go Dad. Bruce Guarino brought his son Justin for the day. Bruce’s time was 74.481, driving a 2003 996 turbo. Nick’s time was 80.865, driving a 1990 Mazda Miata. Not bad Nick, but Dad wins this one.

Richard Neff brought his kids Hailey and Derek who are way too young to drive. Well, at least to drive a car. They might drive Richard crazy, but that’s just my speculation. Richard’s time was 71.11, driving a 1987 Porsche 951. We will give this one to Dad on a default. Ken Leddon came out with Stacy. Ken’s time was 71.999, driving a 2006 Porsche Carrera 4S. Stacy drove a 1990 Mazda Miata, but no final time was recorded.

Kevin Van Fleet and his son Christian are regulars at the autocross events. They both conduct the tech inspections on the cars at the events. Christian’s time was 68.284, driving a 1972 911T. Kevin does not autocross his very nice 356.

Another pair of regular drivers are Steve Eguina and his son Michael, who I understand recently purchased his own Porsche to race. Michael’s best timed run was 68.916, driving a 996 GT3. I did not find Steve’s time listed on the records.

James Buck has been bringing his son Neil lately to help out with corner working assignments. Neil is way too young to drive on the track, but I’m sure James is getting him ready. I did not find a time for James’ run in the records, but I am sure it was fast as always.

Eric Budai our new Certified Driving Instructor has started bringing his daughter Amelia to race her Mazda Miata.

And lastly we have the Scheussler family. Bob must be very proud of his daughters and son. Karin Scheussler had a time of 72.928. The records do not show what type of car she drove, but I saw her driving a very nice new Boxster. This, I am quite certain, was purchased from Walter’s Porsche. Lorri Trotter’s time was 70.779. I believe she drove the Boxster as well for her time. And then Kris Scheussler had a time of 69.094, driving a 1985 Porsche 911. Sorry girls, but it looks like your brother won this one. I did not see a time for Bob so perhaps he thought it wise not to compete against his kids.

At the end of the day many memories were made for everyone who attended, especially the Fathers and their sons or daughters.

That’s the way the Walter’s Porsche 5th autocross event was celebrated along with Bill Brewster’s crew as the event sponsor. It is always greatly appreciated by everyone when the event sponsor provides lunch. Pizza, salad and drinks were enjoyed by everyone. Thanks Bill Brewster for a great lunch and thanks Walter’s Porsche for your continued support.

OCR members Mark and Tina Trewartha, and Jay and Marjorie Warren, amongst others. Now a new phase begins for me, and you can be sure that Porsche Club activities are a large part of this coming period.

I must admit to some trepidation at the thought of no “regular” work. Maybe some fellow club members have experienced the same thing. My first few days at home have been busy, I’ve replaced light bulbs, cleaned and even painted a little. Stay tuned to this column and I’ll maybe overcome my usual reticence and share a few experiences. First thing I’ll share is that I no longer say “Middle Aged”. Middle age implies you’re half way “there”. Where ever “there” is. I think I’m a little closer to “there” than in the “middle”? So, this means that I can’t blame the crazy things I might do on a “mid-life crisis”. I’ve already had mine. When did you ever hear of a “late life crisis”? Other than perhaps the inability to remember where you put the hose nozzle? Oh well, a whole new array of euphemisms to explore and exploit.

La Comedia no est finita!Speaking of club events, we have of course: Breakfast club, every first Saturday of the month at Original Mike’s” in Santa Ana. This restaurant very kindly opens early specifically for us, by Mike, a car guy himself. The restaurant is unique, being located in a former car dealership with enough of the old patina to retain interest and perhaps ghosts of loan applications past. We always have upwards of 50 Porsches there. It is almost a mini-concours. By the way, don’t pronounce the “S” in Concours, it’s just not done.

Woody’s Burgerbahn is every 2nd Thursday in Huntington Beach. If you’re a long-term OC beachgoer, the name “Woody’s” denotes beachside burger stands and sand mixed in with the mustard and catsup.

Krispy Kreme gathering, I defy anyone, even the staunchest tofu loving, gluten free, Birkenstock wearing, tree saving, diet watching zealot to walk through a Krispy Kreme and not think about buying at least one (okay a dozen)

donuts. Ah, the aroma of this place leaves you in your Porsche with sticky fingers and traces of glaze on your chin. Strong coffee and all the sugar leave you with enough “buzz” to roar through the “honey dos” with warp speed. Then you have the whole afternoon as the high wears off to collapse on the sofa and wonder what it was that happened. Add some Porsches and friends and you get the picture. It’s at The Block in Orange on the 3rd Saturday of the month.

Porsche’s and Pancakes are at least TWO of my favorite things. Down in Newport not far off good ol’ PCH, it’s at another Woody’s Diner on the 4th Saturday of the month. Okay, if you don’t like pancakes, there are eggs and even fruit available. Don’t sit too close to the hardcore pancake aficionado’s though, you’ll be splashed with some of Vermont’s finest for sure.

Walter’s AutoX Series, We are so lucky to have in our region a dedicated and active autocross team. AND a place to practice the art and craft of speed, or at least noise, on a regular basis. As a member of some seniority, both in age and time in the club, I can tell you it wasn’t always thus. We used to be always on the lookout for a place to race, or squeal the tires. It’s a gift. Our season has many events and it is total fun. Go to one and at least watch.

Tours and more tours are scheduled throughout the year. One upcoming is the Mount Wilson and Angeles Crest Highway Tour led by our own Greg Lush on the 17th of August. Right after the time you may be seeing this edition of the Pandemonium. Why not sign up?

The Hearts and Garages Charity Tour is a wonderful way to spend the 24th of August. A real hit with both sides of the Porsche Gender divide, boys and girls who like cars. The ladies get to see the houses and decorations, the guys, and okay some ladies too, get to enjoy the decoration and layout of the owner’s garage. As well as usually some tasty Porsche’s. Highly recommended, email Peggy Huddleston and she’ll be glad to welcome you into the group.

Wash and Shine, Wax and PolishHard to believe, but this is the 43rd “White Gloves Concours”! Oh my, and I think

that I have been to the last 14 or 15 or so. We are back at Lantern Bay Park in Dana Point. This is THE definitive Concours location. Our return chair, Norm Follis, is putting together a wonderful day under the Southern California marine layer. on September 15th. It runs from really early morning (hello Krispy Kreme and coffee) to an afternoon conclusion. Sponsored by Walter’s Porsche and Circle Porsche, I highly recommend it for the whole family.

Another note on this event. If you are running out of Porsche themed knick-knacks, clothes or ephemera, there are bargains to be had at the vendor stands. I once bought a Porsche Golf Bag for $25 that was advertised for... more than that. I can’t guarantee that you’ll find the same discount but the bargains are there.

P.S. bet you never thought I could sneak in a word like “ephemera” in a car magazine did you?

Escape to Los AngelesI know “Snake Riskin” wanted to get OUT of LA but you’ll want to get IN. Each year the really big Porsche event is the “Parade”. It hops around the country from year to year usually balancing somewhere between the population poles of east and west. This year it favors the eastern side of the “excited states”. So to balance this with the people who live on the other side of the same excited states PCA has what is called the “escape”. Typically Thursday through Sunday it is a mini “Parade” and is what might be called a “bargain” with the Parade as a measure of value. I plan to go to this and I suggest you go online and check it out for yourself. Our own Connie Somers is involved with the organizing committee, so email her at Connie Somers <[email protected]>.

How much is this dude gonna go on! Good grief, the best editor in the West is gonna have my skin for rambling on this month. But I can’t help it, I have more time and there is SO much to do. Whether your Porsche has two doors or four. Come out and have fun with us.

Oh, and Mrs. Coopers comment on my retirement? “Twice the spouse and half the income”!

Zone 8 showed off its concours expertise with two cars in the concours showdown. Both were in the Performance Group. Skip and Leslie Shirley from San Diego Region placed first in Thoroughbred race class with a beautifully restored 1958 Devon Porsche scoring 298.8 out of 300 possible points. They also won the People’s Choice award. Bob Weber and David Hankes from your own Orange Coast Region placed second in Series Modified with their 1977 Brumos Porsche 934.5 with a 297.5 score. This car was also in the Historic Display.

Porsche AG and PCNA hosted the Tuesday night concours award banquet. The new 2013 GT3 was flown in to debut at the Parade. And the Porsche and Piech families announced the good news that 100% of their shares in Porsche have been bought back from the Qatar family.

The pictures of the concours tell the real story. The drama that played out at this year’s concours will be best left in Traverse City.

October 24-26 is the PCA Escape to LA held at the Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona. And 2014 brings the national Porsche Parade to Monterey, California. Mark your calendars for both of these events.

new black 2013 991 Carrera in January and christened it with us on the Terranea road rally February 16; what a beautiful day it was! Since we were in Palos Verde we stopped by The Wayfarers Chapel where Ron & I were married 30+ years ago with the Briggs as attendants. Now that’s a lifelong friendship!

Ron & I enjoy many hobbies including woodworking and cooking respectively. And Ron has a miniature car collection. Traveling also is a high

priority, and we most recently enjoyed a Caribbean cruise on Seabourn visiting the Lesser Antilles Islands. Some of our highlights include the Pyramids, Ephesus, a Rhine River cruise, Alaska, Hong Kong, Hawaii and we loved the Jungfrau summit in the Alps. After retirement we are looking forward to more road trips in our

Porsche, seeing the many US sites on our bucket list.

In a recent Pando article another member made a good suggestion, to take more pictures of your cars while you are driving them. No truer words were spoken as we combed through hundreds of pictures for this article and found only glamour shots, of both the Porsches and the Schnauzers. So, let’s all plan to take more pictures while we have fun in these cars we so love!!
