Game Notes Approaching 1K Team veteran Danni Nichols is nearing the 1,000 point club as she sits at 887 career points. The Columbia, Mo., native has been one of the Leathernecks’ top scorers for the last pair of seasons, coming off of a 2020-21 campaign that saw her post 11.4 points a night. Nichols will be the 20th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark.
Let it Fly During 2020-21, Western continued its place as one of The Summit League’s top threats in three-point shooting. The team’s 210 made three-pointers topped the league and good for a .331 percentage, which tied for third-highest among all Summit programs. WIU’s distance shooting marks were led by Carla Flores, who posted a .450 percentage that ranked second-best within single-season records. Samantha Pryor’s 44 triples led her Leathernecks.
Back and Better A strong core of returners headlines WIU’s 2021-22 roster, as nine players are back with at least one year of experi-ence. Two of those such Leathernecks were team leaders in three major categories last season: Evan Zars (9.0 rpg, 1.5 bpg) and Elizabeth Lutz (2.5 spg). Danni Nichols was Western’s second-leading scorer, and Anna Deets was sec-ond on the team in made trey balls (40) as only a first-year.
Trio of New Faces This past spring, Western announced three newcomers would be joining the program: Jalynn Alexander, Addaya Moore, and Jada Thorpe.
Hailing from nearby Chicago, Alexander stands as the sole first-year on the team after enjoying a successful prep year at Marian Catholic high school, where she was named all-state and all-conference.
A transfer from Cincinnati, Moore spent three years with the Bearcats. The 5-10 guard was tabbed a starter in the early part of 2020-21, but suffered a season-ending injury after starting the first four games, in which she averaged 5.8 points, 2.3 assists, and 2.5 steals.
Thorpe, another Chicago native, arrives from Kansas State. She appeared in five games for the Wildcats during 2020-21 after missing her freshman year (2019-20) due to injury. Her resume with the Wildcats included nods to the 2020-21 Academic All-Big 12 first team, 2019-20 Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team, and Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Hard in the Paint In her second season with the Leathernecks this past win-ter, Evan Zars started ever game for the second consecu-tive season and earned a spot on the All-Summit League honorable mention team. She ended as a team-leader in
minutes per game (30.3) rebounds (216), double-doubles (8), and blocks (36). Additionally, Zars led the league in defensive rebounds per game (6.7) while tallying season averages of a .537 field goal percentage and 36 blocks that rank sixth and ninth-best within Western’s single-season records.
We See You, E! Last month on Oct. 1, Elizabeth Lutz named Western Illinois University’s recipient of the 2021-22 Lincoln Academy of Illinois’ Student Laureate Award.
The prestigious award, presented annually to an outstanding senior of each of Illinois’ four-year degree-granting institutions, honors a student’s overall academic excellence and participation in extracurricular activities.
Lutz is a member of the Centennial Honors College and is also minoring in economics. She will graduate in May 2022, and plans to pursue a master’s degree in Quantitative Economics at Western, while finishing her fifth year of NCAA eligibility on the women’s basketball team. She also hopes to play international basketball while studying for the LSAT exam, and then attend law school with an emphasis in environmental and energy law.
Lutz has participated in three volunteer opportunities through the United Nations, worked for a domestic nonprofit that prioritizes housing as a human right and written for an international nonprofit which aids Nepal, El Salvador and Guatemala. She has also worked for USAID and is currently working with the U.S. Department of Energy.
STUDENTS First This past summer, for the fourth year in a row, the Leathernecks landed on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) Academic Team Honor Roll.
Western stood 18th nationally among NCAA Division I institutions, carrying a team GPA of 3.644. Anna Deets and Elizabeth Lutz headlined the group with 4.0 marks, while seven other players registered a 3.81 clip or higher.
It is the sixth time that WIU has earned such recognition with Gravina at the program’s helm.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA, and two-year college women’s basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters the entire season. The 2020-21 season is the 26th in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.

In his 11th season at the helm of Western Illinois Women’s Basketball, JD Gravina has transformed the Leathernecks into one of the highest-powered offenses in the Summit League, and his teams have continued to rewrite the record book with his yearly success.
Gravina was named as the seventh head coach in program history on April 15, 2011, after a highly successful four-year stint at nearby Quincy University. A six-year head coaching veteran prior to Western, Gravina built a powerhouse during his time at Quincy by posting an overall record of 93-28 and taking the Hawks to the NCAA Division II National Tournament three times.
In an unprecedented 2020-21 year, Gravina’s Leathernecks went 8-16 overall, making their way into the postseason to become the first time a fifth-seeded team won a league tournament game in program history. During 2019-20, Gravina maneuvered through an injury bug season that sidelined three of his seniors He continued to have
the program dominate inside Western Hall, finishing 11-3, to tie for third all-time in home wins. The Leathernecks finished 9-7 in Summit League play to earn a three-way tie for third.
He coached Olivia Kaufmann to a First Team All-Summit selection while becoming the sixth player under Gravina to score 1,000 points. He also saw Saint Louis transfer Evan Zars make an immediate impact to the program. She was named The Summit League Newcomer of the Year, the third under Gravina, and spot on the All-Newcomer Team. Zars finished second in the conference with 274 rebounds and totaled eight double-doubles en route to averaging 9.1 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game. Zars blocked 47 shots to place ninth all-time in program history with six outings with three or more.
Owing the best winning percentage in program history, Gravina again helped grow and improve the program in different areas in the 2018-19 season. For the second straight season, he saw one of his seniors become Western’s all-time leading scorer. Taylor Higginbotham took over the title in her final season and passed former teammate Emily Clemens.
Also that year, Western Illinois sat atop all Division I women’s basketball programs on the WBCA (Women’sBasketball Coaches Association) Academic Team Honor Roll with a 3.767-grade point average. The 2018-19 season featured several academic highlights for the Leathernecks, including their highest term GPA in program history.
On Nov. 18, 2017, Gravina and his Leathernecks earned perhaps the most monumental win in program history: a victory over then-No. 18 Stanford. This marked the first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent in Western Illinois Women’s Basketball history. Gravina also helped guide his team to its third-straight appearance in a postseason (the WNIT in 2018). Once again, his Leathernecks ranked in the top-10 nationally in multiple categories (steals, steals per game, three-point field goals made, three-point field goals made per game, and turnover margin) and saw a combined 11 individual and team records broken. The team also set a new program record with an 81.1 scoring average that ranked 12th nationally.
In 2016-17, Gravina’s team recorded an unprecedented 26-7 record, the best in program history, along with the program’s first Summit League Regular Season Championship in 11 years as well as the first Summit League Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament berth since 1995. Gravina’s program also featured arguably the biggest shot in program history, as Taylor Hanneman’s 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds to go sent the title game against IUPUI into overtime, where the Leathernecks went on to win 77-69. The play was also featured No. 2 on ESPN Sportscenter’s ‘Top-10 Plays.’
Gravina graduate from William Jewell College in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. He competed in basketball, tennis, and track and field as a student-athlete.He received his first master’s degree from UMKC in Economics in 2002 and another in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from Emporia State in 2007.
He and his wife Meredith, welcomed their first child, Maryn Elizabeth, on September 3, 2014, their second child, Dominic James, on May 7, 2016, and their third child, Miller Lucille Gravina, on September 5, 2018. They are also joined by their dogs Annie and Mollie.
