LAST ACTION FOR THE BULLDOGS ...
Bowie State Pounds University of the District of Columbia 100-57
BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State University Bulldogs women’s basketball team jumped out to a 15-0 first quarter lead and never looked back, cruising to a 100-57 home victory over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds.
Sophomore Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) led Bowie State with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Seniors Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) and Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) added 16 and 13 points respectively. Graduate student Sad Chatman (Min-neapolis, Minn.) and senior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) tallied 12 and 11 points respectively to round out Bowie State’s double figure scorers.
The University of the District of Columbia were paced by Daeja Quick (Pittsburgh, Pa.) with 22 points in 40 minutes of play and Natalija Dubrovina (Belgrade, Ser-bia) came off the Firebirds bench to chip in 15 points to go along with six rebounds.
Bowie State (6-1) led wire-to-wire as the hosts held the University of D.C. scoreless for the first 8:37 of regulation and without a field goal for 9:10. The Fire-birds missed their first 12 field goal attempts of the game and went just 1-for-15 in the opening quarter to go with nine turnovers. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, shot 47-percent from the field and took a commanding, 18-6 lead at the end of the period.
UDC (2-6) began to pick things up offensively in the 2nd quarter as Quick added eight points to her total and Dubrovina knocked down a pair of triples, but UDC could not keep pace with Bowie State as the Bulldogs still outscored the Firebirds, 28-21 in the quarter and took a commanding, 46-27 lead into halftime.
Quick would score the first five points of the second half on a jumper followed by a three-pointer, and that quick 5-0 burst brought the UDC Firebirds within 14 at 46-32. That was as close as the Firebirds would get the rest of the way, however, as BSU out-scored UDC 23-7 the remainder of the quarter and extended its lead to 30 (69-39) heading into the final period.
The Bulldogs continued their ferocious attack in the 4th quarter as they went on to win by their larg-est margin of the night, 100-57.
Bowie State dominated on the glass (48-39), points in the paint (40-12) points off turnovers (32-8) and bench points (48-25). The Bulldogs ended the evening with a field goal shooting percentage of 43.8 (33-of-68) and 84.8 percent at the free throw line (28-of-33).
On the flip side, the Firebirds closed out the contest hitting just 16-of-60 field goals (26.7 percent), which included 31.8 percent behind the arc (7-of-22) and 66.7 percent (18-of-27) at the charity stripe.
