MAINE HOSTS DARTMOUTH IN FINAL HOME GAME OF 2016The University of Maine women’s basketball team hosts Dartmouth in what will be Maine’s final appearance at Cross Insurance Center in the 2016 calendar year. Today’s game, brought to you by Northeast Pain Management, will be the 16th all-time meeting between Maine and Dartmouth. Maine is 21-1 at the Cross Center in its last 22 games.
A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:Maine looks for its second consecutive home win after cruising to a 68-49 win on Wednesday over Northeastern. In the win, Maine continued to get production from its underclassmen as Laia Sole led the way with 16 points. Sigi Koizar chipped in 14, all coming in the first half, with four 3-pointers while freshman Julie Brosseau added 11. Maine forced 16 Northeastern turnovers, turning the mishaps into a 19-4 margin for points off turnovers. The swarming Maine defense limited the Huskies to a dismal 27.7 percent shooting from the floor.
Koizar continues to rank at the top of Maine’s scoring. The senior guard, who recently passed Liz Wood to move into sixth on Maine’s all-time 3-pointer list (148), ranks fifth in the America East at 14.4 points per game. Her 91.3 percent mark from the free throw line is fourth best in the league and 20th nationally. Koizar, who has notched double-digit scoring efforts in each of her last four outings, is averaging 18.3 ppg over that stretch and has knocked down nine 3-pointers in her last two outings. Maine is receiving 71% of its scoring from first-year Black Bears, led by Laia Sole who is averaging 10.3 points while shooting 42.9% from the floor; the 11th best mark among league leaders. Sole, the two-time America East Rookie of the Week, is adding 3.4 rebounds and a team-high 2.7 assists. Fellow freshman Blanca Millan is chipping in 7.1 points while transfer guard Tanesha Sutton is averaging 6.1 points. Sutton, coming off a career-high seven assist outing against Northeastern, is also contributing 4.8 rebounds. Julie Brosseau, who hit a trio of threes against Northeastern, leads Maine at 41.2% from beyond the arc. Freshman Naira Caceres leads all Maine rebounders at 5.1 pre game.
Maine, which has held two of its last three opponents under 50 points, enters ranked third in the league in defense, allowing 60.0 points per game. Offensively, Maine is averaging 55.6 points and checks in fourth in the league from the free throw line (70.3) and fifth from the field (38.5).
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH:The Big Green enter action 1-3 in their last four but are coming off a 61-49 win at Boston University on Wednesday evening. Kate Letkewicz led Dartmouth in the victory, posting her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 boards.
Letkewicz has led the Big Green in scoring in four of their first eight games and checks in at 12.0 points with a team-high 7.0 rebounds. Letkewicz leads Dartmouth from long-range, hitting at 42.1% from 3-point land. Fanni Szabo is adding 8.6 points and 2.7 rebounds while Isalys Quinones is averaging 8.0 points and 5.3 boards.
Dartmouth is averaging 56.4 points per game while giving up 60.1. The Big Green check in at 35.9% from the floor, 34.6% from 3-point range and 72.5% from the free throw line
A GLIMPSE INTO THE SERIES:Maine and Dartmouth are meeting for the 16th time as the Black Bears enter with an 11-4 mark in head-to-head action against the Big Green. Maine, which has won four-straight in the series, took the most recent meeting last season by a score of 59-41. In the last two meetings, Maine has outscored Dartmouth 112-79, holding the Big Green to just 38 points in the 2014 meeting. In two games against Dartmouth, Koizar is averaging 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists. The Black Bears are 5-2 at home against Dartmouth. HEATING UP FROM DOWNTOWN:Maine, which led the America East in several 3-point categories last year, is beginning to heat up from downtown. The Black Bears have hit 19 from beyond the arc in their last two games combined, including surpassing the double-digit mark for the first time this season with 10 against Northeastern.
DEFENSIVE WINS:A year ago, Maine limited its opponents to just 51.1 points per game. This season, when Maine’s great defense has presented itself, it has ended in wins for the Black Bears. In its four wins this season, Maine is holding opponents to 44.5 points per game while forcing 18.8 turnovers (a +6.8 margin).
NEWCOMER SCORING:Over its first eight games, Maine has received 70.8% of its scoring from newcomers (7 freshman, 1 transfer) - with 59.8% of all scoring coming strictly from the freshman class. Seven of its eight top scorers are either freshmen or first-year players (Transfer-Sutton). Maine has received 304 of its total 432 points from newcomers.
ALL-TIME 3-POINTERS:Sigi continues to climb Maine’s list of all-time 3-point shooters. Entering play, Koizar ranks sixth in 3-point makes in school history. Her four makes against Northeastern lifted her over former teammate Liz Wood for sixth-place all-time.
KOIZAR GOOD WORKS NOMINEE:On Dec. 1, it was announced that Sigi Koizar was one of 97 nominees nation-wide for the 2017 WBCA/Allstate Good Works Team. Koizar, the only nominee to represent the America East conference, is recognized as a nominee to the award which honors an oustanding group of student-athletes who represent the sport’s finest in the areas of community service and leadership among their peers.
SOLE BURSTS ON TO THE SCENE: In just her first two weeks of collegiate aciton, freshman forward Laia Sole has raked in a trio of awards. Sole captured the first two America East Rookie of the Week awards and was honored a member of the Tipoff Tournament All-Tournament team.
BIG B1G WINMaine got off to a big start this season as it defeated Big Ten (B1G) member Purdue, 67-47, in the opening round of the Tipoff Tournament. The Black Bears were able to avenge last season’s 56-33 loss at Purdue. TIPOFF TOURNAMENT HONORSThe Black Bears earned runner-up status in their own Tipoff Tournament to kickoff the 2016-17 season. Sigi Koizar (17 pts) and Laia Sole (14 pts) each tallied double-figures in the opening win over Purdue to help them earn all-tournament team honors. The Black Bears dropped the championship game to No. 10 Mississippi St.
WAIT, WHERE’D EVERYONE GO:It will be a new look for the Black Bears this season after graduating eight seniors and losing two others student-athletes from its 2015-16 roster. In all, Maine lost 69.1% (1463/2117 pts) of its scoring offense. However, Maine returns top scorer and preseason all-conference selection Sigi Koizar (17.7 pts/619 total pts) and welcomes in a wealth of athletic talent with high-level experience and national team competition under their belts.

SEEING 20-20: Maine has put together back-to-back 20+ win seasons, including a 26 win seasons a year ago which came up just one win short of matching the all-time single-season wins record (1996-96). Maine will be looking for its third-straight 20+ win season, which it also put together from 2002-05, also the last time Maine was over .500 in three consecutive awards.
HOME COOKING:For the Black Bears, there’s nothing better than playing in front of the home fans at the Cross Insurance Center. It’s clear that Maine has a true home-court advantage as it went 12-0 at home last season and put together 20-straight home wins before dropping a contest to No. 10 Mississippi St. Prior to the loss to the Bulldogs, to find Maine’s last loss at the Cross Insurance Center one would have to go all the way back to Jan. 3, 2015, a 49-43 loss to UAlbany. Maine is 29-4 over the past three seasons at home. The Black Bears were tops in the America East and second in New England (UConn) home attendance last season (2,008). In its last 22 outings, Maine is 21-1 at the Cross Center.
PRESEASON POLL:After capturing back-to-back America East regular season titles, Maine has been selected third in the 2016-17 America East Preseason Coaches Poll. The Black Bears earned a pair of first place tallies and were just two votes behind UMBC for second and just two ahead of Binghamton.
DEEP KNOWLEDGE:Over the past three seasons, Maine has knocked down an astounding 680 total 3-pointers, averaging 227 makes from beyond the arc. Maine now owns three of the top five single season marks (245 (1), 223 (T-2), 212 (T-4)) in America East history.
ATTENDANCE:A year ago, Maine averaged 2,008 fans at home; second best in New England (UConn) and tops in the America East. The single season total was Maine’s highest since 2007-08 (2,040).
DEFENSIVE EFFORT:Last year, the Black Bears finished the season ranked fifth in the nation and first in the America East, allowing just 51.1 points per game. Maine held 31 of its 35 opponents under 60 points and 17 under 50, including LSU and Clemson. In league play, Maine held 15 of 16 opponents under 60 points and seven under 50. Counting tournament action, conference foes averaged just 47.9 ppg against the Black Bears. Maine forced 15.7 turnovers, holding a +3.46 margin in the stat. DIALING LONG DISTANCE:Maine was tops in the America East in three-point field goals made (223), three-point field goals per game (6.4) and first in three-point field goal percentage (32.9). On 15 separate occasions, the Black Bears hit seven or more three-point field goals in a game. Maine hit a season-high 13 three-pointers against UAlbany (2/14). Maine’s 223 makes finished just 22 short of tying the all-time record (245) set in 2013-14.
SIGI FOR THREE:Sigi Koizar knocked down 85 shots from 3-point range in 2015-16, a new single-season Maine record. With two makes at Stony Brook (2/20), Koizar set a new Maine record for three-point makes in a season, besting Kristen McCormick’s previous record (70), set in 1998-99. Against Stony Brook on March 6, Koizar matched Cindy Blodgett’s record for 3-point attempts of 187 (1996-97) and finished the year with 196 attempts. Richard Barron enters his sixth year with the Black Bears, and his 17th overall season as a head coach. Fol-lowing the 2015-16 season, in which Barron guided the Black Bears back to their second-straight WNIT berth af-ter capturing another America East regular season title, Barron agreed to a four-year extension with the Univer-sity of Maine. It was upward and onward in 2015-16 under Barron’s leadership as the Black Bears continued the climb to greatness. The team that had regained respect through-out the Northeast was now opening eyes on a national level as Maine earned a No. 14 ranking in the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25. Barron’s defensive philosophy proved to be one of the top in the country as Maine fin-ished the season ranked as the No. 5 rated team in terms of scoring defense, limiting opponents to just 51.1 points per game. The Black Bears built off their defensive suc-cess as Barron guided Maine to its first back-to-back 20+ win season since 2003-04, 2004-05. The year would see Maine reach the America East Championship game and once again return to the WNIT after a 26 win campaign, one short of the school record. The Black Bears went un-defeated on their home court, moving their home win streak to 19-0. The home crowds continued to grow as Maine was top in the conference and second in New England, only to UConn, in attendance (2,008). Barron’s mentoring throughout the 2014-15 season guided the Black Bears to their highest achievement of success in over 10 years as Maine reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2004-05 and totaled its highest amount of wins (23) in 11 years. The success of 2014-15 brought Maine back into the national picture as it reached a #19 ranking in the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25, returned to the WNIT for the first time since 2005 and captured the 2015 America East Regular Season Co-Championship. Maine’s success on the court continued to be matched by its community service and academic efforts. The Black Bears finished the year with the 24th best GPA in the na-tion (3.399) while spending countless hours off the court giving back to the Black Bear Nation community. It took Barron just three year’s to return the Black Bears to the winning ways which they were so used to in year’s past. In his third season at the helm of the team, Barron led Maine to a 17-15 record, a 10-6 league re-cord and its first postseason win since 1999; a 77-47 home drubbing of Bucknell in the opening round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). Maine’s 17 wins was a +13 over the previous season; one of the top three turnarounds in the country in terms of win totals. Maine’s total wins (17) and America East conference victories (10) were its most since the 2004-05 season. The Black Bears finished fourth in the league standings; their high-est regular season finishing mark since placing first in 2005. Barron’s offensive guidance produced several record-breaking accolades including setting a new mark for most 3-point field goals made in a season in both the team and league record books and tied the mark for 3-point field goals made in a single game (14 at UMBC). Maine’s offense improved +10.0 points per game (65.2); the highest points per game mark since the 2002-03 sea-son. In his second season with Maine, Barron worked to develop one of the youngest squads in all of NCAA bas-ketball. His first recruiting class welcomed nine student-athletes to the Black Bears, led by freshman forward Liz Wood who Barron helped develop into the America East Co-Player of the Year. In his first year as a Black Bear, Coach Barron doubled Maine’s overall and conference wins from a season ago while leading the team to its first postseason victory since 2006. Along the way, Coach Barron helped a pair of players to All-Conference honors as Samantha Ba-ranowski was named to the All-America East Third Team and rookie Danielle Walczak was honored to the America East All-Rookie squad.
Following the 2011-12 season, Coach Barron proved to Black Bear nation why he is known for his fantastic recruiting. Coach Barron, along with his staff, introduced a nine-member 2012-13 signing class to the University of Maine, which received national attention as the class was ranked 36th best in the nation by Blue Star Basket-ball’s National Scouting director Chris Mennig. Off the court, Coach Barron made sure the Black Bears were involved in a variety of activities within the community in terms of public service, fundraising efforts and charity events with the most memorable moment off the court coming when the Black Bears and Coach Barron teamed up to raise over $10,000 dollars for the Play4Kay Breast Cancer Foundation. The University of Maine introduced Richard Barron as its new women’s basketball coach on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 in a press conference at “The Pit” in Memorial Gymnasium. Barron came to the University of Maine after a two-year stint at North Carolina State where he served as an assistant coach under Kellie Harper. In Barron’s first year with the Wolfpack, the Tennessee native helped guide the team to the NCAA Tournament with a 20-14 record. A team that was predicted to finish ninth in the preseason, ended up finishing tied for fifth in the ACC standings while making it to the 2010 ACC Tournament Finals. Barron is well renowned for his fantastic recruiting as he spent two seasons at Baylor prior to his time at NC State as the associate head coach and recruiting coordi-nator with the Bears. During his time at Baylor, Barron was responsible for landing the consensus top-ranked player (Brittney Griner) and the top ranked recruiting class of 2009 while also assisting in coaching the Bears to the Big 12 Tournament Championship. Baylor compiled a 54-13 record to go along with two trips to the NCAA tournament, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2008-09; in the two seasons Barron was with the Bears’ staff. Barron began his Division I head coaching career at Princeton as he spent six seasons at the helm of the Ti-gers’ program. After taking over the program fresh off a 2-25 season prior to his arrival, Barron guided the Tigers to an 11-16 record in his first season, making Princeton one of the most improved teams in the country that year. During his six years at Princeton, Barron managed the Tigers to an Ivy League title in 2005-06, setting a school record for overall wins (21-7) and conference wins (12-2). Barron mentored five different players to All-Ivy League honors while at Princeton. Before his time at Princeton, Barron spent five seasons at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn, compil-ing a 77-48 record during his tenure. In his final season at the University of the South, Barron guided the squad to its first ever conference championship and a No. 8 na-tional ranking in Division III. Prior to his time coaching the Sewanee women, Bar-ron was the assistant men’s coach at Sewanee for four years. Barron came to the University of Maine with an 11-year head coaching career record of 152-139. In the summer of 2006, Barron looked to expand his coaching knowledge as he traveled to Treviso, Italy with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns to observe and study under current New York Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni. In 1998, Barron was one of just three collegiate coaches selected to serve as a floor coach at the American Basket-ball League’s combine. He also served as the Ivy League Representative for the Women’s Basketball Coaches As-sociation from 2003-06. Barron, who grew up in both Florida and Tennessee, graduated from Kenyon College with a B.S. in biology. He graduated cum laude after being named to the dean’s list all eight semesters. Barron played both basketball and baseball while at Kenyon. Barron and his wife, Maureen, a former Princeton soft-ball coach, are the proud parents of twin daughters, Lane and Rae, and younger son, Billy.
