Solomon Mahlangu High School inKwaNobuhle is a school with learnersdedicated to bring change.
Last year their project on “Late Coming”made national headlines, as their Y-CAP pro-gramme was announced the 2015 winner ofthe National Championships of the Youth Cit-izens Action Programme in the secondaryschool category.
“What is even more exceptional is that theirproject to tackle late coming at school was ac-cepted as part of the values and civic engage-ment pillars within the Department of BasicEducation at District, Provincial and Nation-al and level” said Olwen Carson, Social Work-er at Solomon Mahlangu High School.
Mncedi Mtengwana, Principal of SolomonMahlangu said, “I feel very proud of ourlearners. They have branded our school as aschool for change, with their initiative onhow to combat late-coming at school, beingrecognised on the highest levels. It is good toknow that this initiative was also given thegreen light by Judge Edwin Cameron from theConstitutional Court, who was one of lastyear’s judges.”
The Eastern Cape is a “national disaster”in terms of poverty - as reported as far backas 2009 by the Human Science Research Coun-cil and the African Resource Cooperation - intheir findings to the Department of Social De-velopment but Solomon’s 2016 team has an in-novative project to tackle this problem of pov-erty at their school.
“Our learners are impacted by high unem-ployment and the cancellation of Child Sup-port Grant at 18 years of age, even though thechild is still a learner. And there is abuse ofgrants by some parents,” said Mtengwana
“I feel positive regarding the Grade 10’s top-ic for this year. It is ‘Poverty in Education’and I believe it will once again make a differ-ence in the lives of learners in our school aswell as other schools. It will help promote not
only a healthybody, but alsoa healthymind.”
LubabaloSpogter, theSolomonMahlanguleader of the2016 Y-CAPteam said, “Wedid extensiveresearch andfound that pov-erty is themost commonfactor that af-fects ourschool. Withour project weaim to provide

The Solomon Mahlangu Y-CAP will to-morrow have the opportunity to presenttheir project at the district round of the pro-gramme at the Department of EducationDistrict Office in Uitenhage. The provin-cial round will be on July 15 in East Lon-don, with the national round on July 23 inPretoria.Supporters thankedPort Elizabeth’s Grey High School’s

“We would also like to enable their parentsto develop an income through a co-operativebeing started as they can grow vegetables ona piece of land at our school. We want to getthe message out that poverty is not the endof the world and that education is the key tosuccess. I would wish other schools wouldmake use of YCAP’s opportunity to changeunhealthy conditions around them.”
Sinokhanyo Erasmus, one of the seventeam members said, “Being part of thisproject makes me feel responsible to assistother learners at our school. It is not nice tosee them with torn uniforms and know theycome to school with empty stomachs.”

Want to repair a nail hole in a wall? Drillthrough ceramic tile? Solder copper?
The experts at DIY Network share tips forhome-improvement and repair projects.
) Save those fake pre-approved creditcards you get in the mail – you can use themas glue spreaders or shims
) When driving screws into dense hard-woods, lubricate them with wax or soap toprevent stripping the hole
) Sand the face of the hammer head withsandpaper to help the hammer grip the nail
and prevent the nail head from slipping) Wrap paint rollers and brushes in a plas-
tic bag between coats to keep them full ofpaint and prevent them from drying out.
) When drilling though ceramic tile or na-tural stone, place masking tape on the sur-face. This makes marking the tile easier andhelps the drill bit stay in one place
) Create space and style in a small bath-room by adding niches in the wall and sho-wer area.
) Shop at your local re-use center. You canfind great pieces of granite or marble left over
from larger jobs.) If there’s a custom tile you love but your
budget won’t allow you to cover the entire ba-throom with it, use it as an accent tile andpurchase lower-cost field tiles.
) Don’t skimp when it comes to replacingthe work that needs to be restored.
) Play detective. When working on a histo-rical project, look for “ghosts,” or remnantsof the past such as wallpaper, paint marks,or even molding and trim pieces. These willhelp you restore your project to its originalcharacter. (More info:: www.diynetwork.com.)
