With South Africans experiencing theworst drought in 23 years, there was a
heightened awareness of the country’s waterscarcity during the 2016 Woolworths Educa-tional Programme’s ‘Thirsty for Action’ com-petition.
A record number of more than 5 000 entrieswere received. Learners from Grades 1 to 12in participating schools were asked to writea letter that demonstrated their understand-ing of water scarcity as well as motivate whytheir school needed to win a fully installed,10 000 litre water tank. A total of 14 watertanks were donated to schools across thecountry, with 2 of these tanks installed atschools in Uitenhage.
Lisenathi Daku of Little Flower PrimarySchool in Uitenhage was one of this year’s‘Thirsty for Action’ winners. She impressedthe judges with her wonderfully illustratedletter that showed she has a keen awareness
of the importance of water saving.Liyema September of Ashton Gontshi Pri-
mary in KwaNobuhle, was another winnerfrom Eastern Cape. She impressed the judgeswith her awareness of the importance of wa-ter to all life and made it clear that a watertank would help their school be more watersecure, which would include being able to ir-rigate their food garden.
“Some of the learners who entered attendschools that have no running water and oth-ers in the drought-stricken regions are expe-riencing water cuts that disrupt their educa-tion,” said Pieter Twine, Woolworth’s Gener-al Manager of Loyalty and MySchool.
“It is vital that our youth are empoweredto live more sustainable lives and play a rolein safeguarding their future.”
The two learners each won a Woolworthsgift card for themselves and a water tank fortheir school. (Heilie Combrinck)

Vibrant street muscicans, fine food andpure French flamboyance are what can
be expected at the “Fête de la Musique” musicfestival in Richmond Hill on Saturday.
“The “Fête de la Musique” allows musi-cians and members of the public to interacton a social level.
“It is also an opportunity to discover newartists and is an interesting vehicle for musi-cians to entertain them,” said Charlotte Jar-net, director of Fête de la Musique.
There will more than 30 local artists and 2international artists (from France & from Re-union Island) performing at the festival
which will be take place on two stages (10:00-22:00).
The festival was initially launched inFrance on the 21st June 1982 and has becomean annual social tradition in cities through-out France.
Based in Port Elizabeth since 1960 and inRichmond Hill since 1990, the Alliance Fran-çaise, International Language School & Cul-tural Centre, has launched this festival tocombine a contemporary French traditionwith South African musical culture.
“The Alliance Française believes that Rich-mond Hill is the ideal venue to host the Fête
de la Musique as it is a vibrant suburb witha large variety of restaurants and boutiquessituated in the area,” said Jarnet.
Festival-goers will have the opportunity towalk from one venue to another and in so do-

Blood drives are important in South Africa,as it is one of 65 countries that gets all of itsblood from voluntary donors. In the face of major communicable disease
epidemics South Africa has maintained ahigh degree of blood safety and a reliable sup-ply of blood countrywide. To keep blood safeSANBS tests every single unit of blood col-lected daily for pathogens that cause HIV,Hepatitis B and C and syphilis which arehighly prevalent in the country. This is aninvestment thathas givenmanyaccident vic-tims, people suffering from blood-related dis-eases and mothers in labour the opportunityto live healthy lives.First-time mother Wendy Patterson
wouldn’t be alive today had it not been for22 generous strangers giving blood.
SANBS has over 400 000 donors on its data-base and the number is still growing. Thishas been achieved somewhat through em-bracing the diversification of its donor base.“Blood really connects people andourhope
is that our efforts will see an even widerrange of donors walk into donor centres tostart their journey in sharing the gift of life,”says SANBS communications manager Ms.Vanessa Raju.
) The Uitenhage Blood Donor Centre isopen on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00- 18:00 and there is a mobile blood drive inDespatch every month. The next one is scheduled for 28 June from
14:00 - 19:00 at the Town Hall. Support themand possibly safe a life in the process.(Anika de Beer)

“#LoveRugby is our story, South Africa’sstory. Through this movement, we will
bring to life rugby’s story and why peoplelove this game.”This is according to Jurie Roux, CEO of SA
Rugby, who continued and said, “Rugbyholds a very powerful place in conversationsabout South Africa. We’re proud of the factthat our sport really matters to SouthAfrica.”New Springbok coach Allister Coetzee
marked the start of his changing of the guardby asking his players, dressed in brightyellow #LoveRugby t-shirts, to hitch hiketheir way to camp in Stellenbosch, visitingdiverse locations on their way.Coetzee said, “We love rugby and we want
South Africa to share this love. The playersfelt it on the first day at campwhen theywentinto communities and stood by the roadsidetrying to beg a lift.Roux said that SA Rugby had achieved a
number of significant advances in recentmonths but that that message was not alwaysheard.“The selection of our Springbok, SA ‘A’ and
Junior Bok squads point to the future,” saidRoux. “Our Sevens team has an outstandingsquad, we have signed new sponsors as wellas the Proudly South African Pledge andengaged positively with key stakeholders.“This really is a time to #LoveRugby.”The #LoveRugby movement will gather
momentum during the international seasonwith more engagements with supporters andexpressions of rugby love to come.Supporters can join the #LoveRugbymove-
ment by following theSpringboks at@Spring-boks on Twitter, www.facebook.com/spring-boks or @BokRugby on Instagram. (Sport24)
