TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

How Do You Pay Off Debt?

When you're saddled with multiple debt payments every month and want to put extra money toward paying off one at a time, how do you decide which debt gets the extra money first? There are two schools of thought: Some financial gurus advise paying off the smallest debt first, and then using that extra money to attack the next smallest. Others believe in going for the one with the highest interest rate first, no matter how large or small the debt. But when it comes down to it, it's the consumer, not the financial wizards, who ultimately write the checks. And it's consumer who, for the most part, will pay the smallest debt first, no matter the interest rate.

Now a University of Michigan study (Winning the Battle but Losing the War: The Psychology of Debt Management) has uncovered the reasons for consumer debt repayment decisions. Researchers concluded that

consumers will pay off a small debt first, even if a larger debt has a higher interest rate, for the emotional and psychological satisfaction of retiring a debt -- a "quick win," as they dubbed it. Correct or not, consumers are concerned with reducing the number of debts more than they are with the dollar value of the debts. It was only when consumers were shown the amount of interest they were paying that some saw the sense in changing their repayment methods.Credit-card companies are now required to show in a box on each month's statement just how long it will take you to pay off the debt if you make only minimum payments, as well as a sample comparison to how much you'd have to

pay each month to retire the debt more quickly. You can make use of an online calculator to show 1) how quickly a debt will be paid off if you make payments of varying amounts, and 2) how much interest you'll be paying during that time. Search online for "credit card payment calculator," then do the math for each of your debts to see which plan gets you debt-free the fastest.

The bottom line: No matter which method you use to pay off debts, be sure it makes financial sense. Always make more than the minimum payment to protect your credit scores.

•We hear a lot aboutmyrrh and frankincensethis time of year, butwhat exactly are thesetwo substances? Myrrh comes from a smallthorny shrub in the Commiphora species that grows in rocky terrain. It’s the gum resin of the shrub that is produced as a reaction to a cut through the bark and into the sapwood. Ancient Egyptians used myrrh, a very valuable commodity, for embalming mummies. Myrrh’s medicinal qualities also made it a good dressing for wounds. In religious ceremonies, it was used on the incense altar in the Jerusalem tabernacle. Today, myrrh is still used in liniments and salves for abrasions, arthriticachesandskinailments.Likemyrrh, frankincense is also a resin, obtained from the Boxwelliatree.Becauseofitsrichfragrance,it’sused for incense, perfumes and aromatherapy. Close to 40 million fresh Christmas trees are produced in the United States each year, with 95 percent of these grown at Christmas tree farms. When it’s time to take your fresh tree down for the season, recycle it! About 59 percent of real trees are recycled, many ground into garden mulch, with others used to make sand and soil erosion barriers. Never burn your Christmas tree in your fireplace — It creates creosote buildup, which can cause a chimney fire.

“Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.” --Eric Sevareid

GR ISWOLD

D S I G O R L W

Celebrating Christmas for 12 days began during the Middle Ages. The 12 days extend from Christmas Day to January 6, which is the Feast of the Epiphany, the traditional day of the coming of the Magi to Bethlehem with gifts for the Baby Jesus. According to tradition, the names of the three Magi who came from the East were Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar.

Sally was going to the office holiday party but needed a new outfit. She went into Macy’s and asked the clerk, “May I try on that dress in the window, please?”“Certainly not, madam!” responded the clerk. “You’ll have to use the changing room like everyone else!”

Alabama was the first U.S. state to recognize Christmas as an official holiday in 1836. The day was not officially acknowledged as a federal holiday until 1870, when the U.S. Congress declared it so.

4th Quarter 2011Week 51
