RAMS is a 100% volunteer organization that is committed to the Glenrock, Converse County community. 100% of all fundrasising proceeds are reinvested back into the community strictly for the benefit of the community. In 2011 RAMS of Glenrock voted in to make their next major contribution to the community and businesses of Glenrock to be some form of I-25 exposure. RAMS will be hosting fundraisers to raise funds for a bill board on I-25 in hopes of attacting drivers to come into the community and experience all that Glenrock WY has to offer. Glenrock is rich in history. The Oregon, Bozeman, Texas and California Trails all came

together along Deer Creek and the Platte River. The Deer Creek Museum is the perfect place to relive the beginnings of the town. The Paleon Museum welcomes visitors to experience the time before man when Glenrock area was inhabited by a different form of life. The dinosaurs roamed throughout the region during the Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods. The prehistory that exists can be seen at the Paleon Museum. The bones that are on display came from the Kola Quarry north of Glenrock, the Como Bluffs Quarry near Medicine Bow and from a private ranch near Lusk. Besides history Glenrock offers Fine Dining, Unique shopping, Golf Course and is host to the Annual Fire & Ice, Art In The Park, The Yak About Festival & the Fall Fest/Hunters BBQ. RAMS started community Meet N Greets in 2011. Meet N Greets are hosted by RAMS business members, open to the public, and held on the 3rd Thursday of every other month beginning in February. RAMS will continue to host fundraisers and Meet N Greets to support the Glenrock Community. RAMS looks forward to the participation of our current members, new members and the wonderful Glenrock community

Could it be that Kasey Kahne has finally turned the corner?

Kahne, 32, won his third Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte

Motor Speedway on Memorial Day weekend, meaning that four of his 13 career victories at the Sprint Cup level have occurred at the 1.5-mile track., where he also won the Sprint All-Star Race in 2008.

But Kahne, who is from Enumclaw, Wash., has never finished better than eighth (2006) in the point standings. This year, Kahne's first at Hen-drick Motorsports, began slowly, but now he has reeled off consecutive finishes of seventh, eighth, fifth, fourth, eighth and first, advancing from 31st to 15th in the standings. The latest CMS victory was important in terms of one of two wild-card slots in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, but, with 14 races remaining in the regular season, Kahne is only 42 points behind 10th place Carl Edwards. The top 10 automatically advance into the Chase.

"The win's really important for us to make the Chase and keep moving up in the points," Kahne said. "You've got to win to make the Chase.

"We just need to stay after it and keep doing the things we've been doing."

Kahne and teammate Jimmie Johnson are the hottest drivers in the sport. Although Roush Fen-way drivers Greg Biffle and Matt

Kahne, Hendrick Back in GearKenseth are atop the point standings, it would be premature at this point to suggest Hendrick isn't still NASCAR's best team.

"Our team is solid," Kahne said. "Our car is solid. Mr. Hendrick gives us everything we need to win races and run up front. Finally we were able to put it all together.

"But next week (Dover) will be a new show. We have to figure it out again next week in prac-tice. It's just tough. The competition is stout. It's hard to just move through the field and pass cars because everybody is so fast. The cars are so competitive right now, it makes it difficult."

Q: I can find new epi-sodes of “Army Wives” on the TV schedule. Is it done for the season? -- Genie D., via e-mail

A: Don’t worry -- there will be 10 new episodes of Lifetime’s “Army Wives” starting Sunday, June 24, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Note the new time slot, as “Wives” will now follow “Drop Dead Diva.” Upon the show’s return, Susan Lucci will be back in her guest-starring role.

• • •Q: I watched the most won-

derful documentary on PBS the other night on the life of Johnny Carson. He is and always will be the best late-night talk show host, and I was very interested to learn about this usu-ally private man. Will it air again soon? If not, can I

buy it on DVD? -- Paul F., Altoona, Pa.A: I know the documentary you are talking about,

because I watched it too and absolutely loved it. In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s -- when I was finally allowed to stay up late -- I watched “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” religiously, so I was thrilled to sneak a peek into this talented man’s life. You can stream “American Masters Johnny Carson: King of Late

Night” on your computer at pbs.org/americanmasters. However, if you can wait until July 17, you can pur-chase the DVD (or Blu-ray) of the film, which will include outtakes and bonus material, through PBS Distribution.

Pets in DistressDEAR PAW'S CORNER: Recently, my cat

"Clark Gable" got very ill -- vomiting frequently and lethargic. I had no idea what was wrong, so I called my veterinarian. The vet's assistant talked me through some important steps that I didn't know and wouldn't have been able to accomplish in my panicked state, such as looking at what C.G. was vomiting up and looking for possible sources of poisoning in my apartment. She advised me to bring him in immediately along with a sample of the vomit (gross, right?) and a couple of possible items he could have eaten.

The vet was able to quickly treat C.G., who has made a complete recovery. But I've become much more aware that I need to learn when my cat is in distress and how to prevent him get-ting into dangerous things -- like the houseplant leaves he ingested. I hope you'll remind readers to educate themselves as well. -- Clarence in Cincinnati

DEAR CLARENCE: Your story is more com-mon than you'd think. Thanks for sharing it.

If you have a pet, it's very important to know that many household items can be dangerous if your pet ingests them. For example, many cats love to chew on the leaves of houseplants -- but many houseplants are extremely poisonous to cats, especially plants from the lily family. Other seemingly benign things, like chocolate and on-ions, can be harmful to pets, especially dogs.

Even armed with the knowledge of what can harm your pet, accidents can happen. For exam-ple, a dog can break into the pantry and eat a giant bag of dog food. Make sure to display the phone number of your pet's veterinarian and the nearest emergency pet hospital near the telephone or on the refrigerator where you can access it should your pet ever be injured, ill or in distress.

Neighborhoods hum and bustle with an extra dose of activity this time of year, and some households, like the Gustafson’s, seem to be especially on the go -- make that “on the run,” but in a good kind of way. Watching the action from the sidelines, I can’t help but be inspired by this fit family. All four kids play hockey, baseball/softball and tennis, and two play soccer. Toss in the parents, and biking trumps driving the car whenever possible.

No wonder mom Angie always has her favorite chewy power bar recipe handy for easy reference. She and the kids enjoy making the tasty snack that is chock full of healthy in-gredients, including flaxseed, wheat germ and raisins. Reese’s Pieces are added to the mix, but she controls the amount.

“The original online ‘Ultimate Power Bar’ recipe, which has been passed from friend to friend, comes from Lunds, our neighborhood market where you can easily find all the ingre-dients,” she says. “But, like most recipes I prepare, I tweak the ingredients to suit our tastes. The bars are ideal for school lunches, picnics and rest stops when we bike around town with our cycling club. I don’t know a kid who doesn’t like them -- even the picky eaters ask for the energy snack.”

Make a batch this weekend with your kids and enjoy Angie’s version or Lunds’ original recipe (see resources below).

Homemade Power Bars Are

Energy Snack

ANGIE’S ULTIMATE POWER BAR3 1/2 cups oats1/2 cup raisins1/2 cup shredded coconut2/3 cup sunflower seeds1/2 cup toasted sesame seeds1/2 cup wheat germ1/2 cup oat bran3 tablespoons flax seeds1 tablespoon cinnamon1 teaspoon salt1 1/2 cups natural peanut butter1 cup honey4 tablespoons butter, melted3/4 cup Reese’s Pieces

1. Preheat oven to 350 F.2. In a large bowl, let one child combine the first 10 ingre-

dients with a big spoon. Continue stirring while another child adds the peanut butter, honey and melted butter. When mixed, stir in Reese’s Pieces.

3. Spoon mixture into an ungreased 9- by-13-inch glass pan. Use a spatula to pack and press it down firmly. Bake 15-17 min-utes. Let cool, then chill completely before slicing. Store bars in stacks separated by waxed paper in a covered container in the refrigerator. Makes 36 bars.

Q: When my family bought our first TV during the early 1950s, it was essential that it also had a TV light that provided illumina-tion, but not so much that it distracted from the sharpness of the picture. The lamp we had featured the image of a black panther. I still have it, and before I throw or give it away, please advise me. -- Peggy, Naper-ville, Ill.

A: I, too, remember the old TV lamps. The one I recall featured a design of two Siamese cats, probably inspired by Si and Am from "Lady and the Tramp." Most TV lamps sell in the $25 to $35 range, but as with most collectibles there are always exceptions. Recently I saw a "cowboy and horse" TV lamp from the 1950s priced at $150 in a fancy Scottsdale, Ariz., shop.

• • •Q: I have an original one sheet of "Rebel

Without a Cause" that I got from our little neighborhood theater in 1955. What do you think it is worth? I have been offered $1,000 for it. -- Bill, St. Charles, Mo.

A: L'Imagerie Gallery in Hollywood is offering one for sale priced at $4,000. Keep in mind that condition is extremely impor-tant. If there are rips, tears or stains ... need I go any further?

Watchful Waiting for Prostate Cancer?

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am an 80-year-old male whose annual physical exam was good. My wife and I have a good sex life. We’ve been married 61 years.

However, my PSA rose to 5.7. My family doctor sent me to a urologist, who suggested a biopsy. The urologist said my prostate gland is normal for my age and had no hard spots or lumps. My dad died at 87 due, in part, to prostate cancer. A brother also had difficulties. I read that at my age, I should enjoy life without such procedures. Your opinion, please. -- B.M.

ANSWER: What to do when the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test is higher than normal is a controversial subject. Every year, about 192,000 men are diagnosed with prostate can-cer. Close to 70 percent of those cancers are low-grade, meaning they don’t pose a serious threat to life. Such cancers, depending on the man’s age and his health, may not require any treatment other than scheduled monitoring.

One of the ingredients that goes into the mix for making a decision for “active surveillance” is what’s seen on the biopsy. The pathologist exam-ining the prostate tissue discovers if any cancer is present and assesses the cancer’s stage and its

potential to be an aggressive cancer. If the cancer is in its early stages and if its appearance is one that’s not threatening, then the decision for treat-ment is something that can be discussed with the doctor. Quality of life is as important as extension of life. However, I believe you should have the biopsy. It has some rare complications, but it provides in-formation not obtainable in any other way.

You are a very young 80-year-old. You have no other health problems that might shorten your life. You have a family history of prostate cancer. If the biopsy shows a low-grade cancer, then talk to the doctor about your wishes. One of those wishes could be active surveillance.

The booklet on the prostate gland discusses gland enlargement and cancer. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1001W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or mon-ey order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Too many veterans have waited far too long for mental-health care.

The Office of the Inspector General at the Depart-ment of Veterans Affairs was asked to look at whether the Veterans Health Administration is accurately re-cording the wait times for mental-health services for both existing and new patients.

Policy states that if a veteran calls in and asks for help, he or she is to be seen within 24 hours.

If after the initial evaluation the veteran is not im-mediately given services (hospitalization or outpatient care), a more-comprehensive evaluation must take place within 14 days. This would include a diagnostic and treatment plan.

VHA is to calculate wait times by figuring the days

Hurry Up and Wait

from the desired date of care to the date of the actual appointment. This assumes, of course, that the right date is entered into the system.

The VAOIG determined that: 1) VHA doesn’t have a reliable way to determine whether it’s giving services on time; 2) VHA doesn’t provide initial appointments within that 24-hour window; 3) Veterans are waiting far past that 14-day window for their treatment plan appointments.

As always, the devil is in the details. The VA’s own 2011 performance report claimed that

95 percent had their evaluation with 14 days. Not so, said the VAOIG. The VA’s inaccurate calculations were based on the time between the actual appointment date and the time the evaluation was complete ... often on the same day, which looked like a wait of zero days. It wasn’t calculating how long it took to get the ap-pointment, which might have been weeks.

The VAOIG looked at selected records and de-termined that only 49 percent of veterans had their evaluation within 14 days. The average wait was 50 days to get a full evaluation.

Fifty days is a long time for a veteran who is seek-ing help.
