Neatest TIDBITS® IS FLYING SOUTH WITH THE BIRDS by Patricia L. Cook As the daylight hours shrink and the weather cools, heralding the coming of winter, wouldn’t you like to be like the birds and just head south? This Tidbits will explore the interesting phenom- enon of bird migration. • According to freedictionary.com, migration is “seasonal movement of a complete population of animals from one area to another. Migration is usually a response to changes in temperature, food supply, or the amount of daylight, and is often undertaken for the purpose of breeding.” • If you spend time in cold climates, you can easily understand the advantage birds gain by flying south in the winter. Cold temperatures and the lack of food make it quite unattractive to stay in the north where snow and ice cover the ground. • Approximately 4,000 species of birds are regular migrants. That’s about 40 percent of the total bird species in the world. In North America, there are about five billion land birds from 500 species that leave their nesting areas and choose to spend winter south of the border. It is estimated that more than 100 species that spend their summer breeding time in the United States leave the country in the winter for the warmer climates of the West Indies and/ or Latin America. TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

1. Most bird migrations are regular and somewhat predictable. Are they all?2. What is the term for irregular migra-tions?3. What is the reason for irregular migra-tions?4. Do all birds migrate?5. How many of the 650 species of birds that nest in North America do not mi-grate?

“I realized that if I had to choose, I would rather have birds than airplanes.”

One important migration route stopover, the Platte River in Nebraska, is known for the large flocks that stop there to rest. Each spring, five to nine million ducks and geese and about a half million sandhill cranes, about four-fifths of all of the sandhill cranes in North America, stop for a while. These cranes spend winter in Mexico and the southwest United States and take off by April for nesting areas in Canada, Siberia and Alaska.

A blue jay applied for a receptionist job. She was told

she needed to be able to type 80 words per minute

and take dictation. The bird demonstrated the skills

and surpassed all other candidates. The interviewer

thought he’d be able to eliminate the blue jay when he

said, “The candidate must be bilingual.” The blue jay

replied, “Meow!”

Bird watching is the fastest-growing outdoor activity in America. So, when the birds start tweeting their return in the spring, grab some binoculars and join the crowd! According to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey, 51.3 million Americans consider themselves birdwatchers.

cold climates during winter: seeds, fruits and insects are absent or covered with snow. Mice and small mammals, food for larger birds, hibernate or hide from the cold.

• Birds take their cues for timing migrationfrom nature. The change in daylight hours, not the weather, is what spurs them to fatten up for their long journeys south. Weather is unpredictable, but daylight hours change the same way every year.

THE BIRDS (continued):• The Arctic tern has the longest annual

migration in not just the bird world, but also the entire animal kingdom! It flies from thefar north, in or near the Arctic, where summer days are longest, to its wintering grounds in the southern hemisphere off of Antarctica, where days are longest from November toFebruary, which is summer there. The Arctic tern probably encounters more sunlight during the year than any other creature on the planet. THE BIRDS (continued):• Ornithologists, scientists who study birds, havestudiedmigrationforyearsandidentifiedfourNorthAmerican routes, or flyways, thatbirds use for flying north and south. Theyare: the Atlantic, Mississippi, Central andPacific Flyways. They follow coastlines, major mountain chains and the Mississippi River valley. The landmarks help birds stay on course.

•Themainreasonmigrationpersistsinthebirdworldisforbreedingsuccess.Birdsareabletoraise more offspring when they get away from extreme heat and cold. Long daylight hours in the spring, summer and fall provide protein-rich food for birds that give them strength for breeding. Different species go to different areas depending on their eating habits and needs.

•Thebreedinggrounds for snowyowls are inthe far northern Arctic tundra. When snowy owls migrate, they go south, but may only goas far southasCanada. When thewintersare exceptionally harsh or their food supplies are scarce, they will venture farther south and may be seen in the northern United States. Although considered aNorthAmerican bird, they occasionally migrate to areas of northern EuropeandAsia.

• Harry Potter fans are probably aware thatHedwig, Harry’s famous companion, is a snowy owl. They are not known in real life for magic, but they are known for their striking white plumage and large size. While most owls are nocturnal, which means they are active at night, snowy owls are diurnal; they hunt and are active during the night and day.

•Whileyousitaroundthefireplaceorenjoyyourwood stove this fall and winter, read a book or two about birds that migrate to maintain their existence.

Child Identity TheftMore than 8 million people are victimized by identity theft each year. Just when you thought you'd covered all the bases in protecting yourself, thieves have come up with a new target that most families don't think about: children.According to a news release from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, more than half of child identity-theft victims are under the age of 12. A 9-year-old was in debt collection. The largest debt was nearly three-quarters of a million dollars. A 2-year-old was in bankruptcy. And the youngest victim was 5 months old.As usual, it begins with the Social Security number. It will be years before a child applies for credit, or goes to college or needs any government benefits,

so the theft might not be noticed.Your child might be a victim of identity theft if you receive bills in your child's name, or tax papers, traffic tickets or lien notices, or if your child can't get a drivers license because the number

is already being used. A pre-approved credit-card offer isn't necessarily a red flag unless accompanied by other indications. (Unless you have strong reason to suspect there's been identity theft, don't check your child's credit, as this opens a credit report.)Go to the Identity Theft Resource Center (www.idtheftcenter.org) and put "child" in the search box. Look for Fact Sheet 120. (Don't miss Fact Sheet 120B -- A Guide for Parents.) According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, here are some ways to keep your child safe from identity theft:-- If you open a bank account with a child, opt out of all marketing lists.-- Object to giving your child's Social Security number when registering for school. It might be optional, or there might be a

way to protect the number. Ask hard questions.-- At the doctor's office, ask questions about how the information is to be safeguarded.-- When your teen begins to drive, opt for the random number instead of Social Security number for the license.-- When you teen fills out job applications, teach him or her to leave the Social Security number blank. A would-be employer doesn't need that information. If your child is actually hired, only the bookkeeper who fills out W-2 forms at the end of the year needs the information, not a shift supervisor in a burger place.

Is it really better to use plastic bags instead of paper at grocery stores? Not really. The monetary cost may be less, but the environment suffers when so many plastic bags get loose. Most of us have seen plastic bags flying in the wind, ending up on fences or in trees, littering otherwise attractive natural surroundings. One alternative is to use cloth bags.

People from all over the world visit the Dead Sea for its spas. There are many claims touting the benefits of the region’s solar radiation and climatic conditions, oxygen-enriched atmosphere, mineral-rich salty water, thermo-mineral springs and a therapeutic black mud. Supposedly the Queen of Sheba was the first to believe that the Dead Sea had healing powers, and Cleopatra had the world’s first spa built there.

Some scientists working on an island in the Pacific were chatting when one wondered aloud: “Our supplies should be arriving shortly. Why is it that if you transport something by car, it’s called a shipment, but when it is transported by ship, it’s called cargo? Doesn’t that seem a little backwards?”

A Chilean flamingo named “Pink Floyd” wintered at the Great Salt Lake in Utah after escaping from Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City in 1987. He (gen-der uncertain) continued to live in the wild, surviving on brine shrimp. Floyd was last seen in 2005 in Idaho.

• On Nov. 7, 1940, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapses due to high winds. At the time, wind forces were not taken into consideration by engineers and designers. The remains of the bridge, at the bottom of Puget Sound, form one of the largest man-made reefs in the world.

• On Nov. 12, 1954, Ellis Island, the gateway to America, shuts it doors after processing more than 12 million immigrants since opening in

The More, The Merrier

Some folks prefer hunting solo. They enjoy being out in the field alone and having no one to account for. Others prefer hunting with a few buddies. Not only do they have someone to look out for them, but they have some-one to share stories and tips with. If you are just begin-ning, you might find it best to hunt with others, at least for the time being. Don’t know of any hunters? No problem. You can join a hunting club.

Hunting is as popular as ever, and there are hundreds of hunting clubs across the country. To find one in your

area, conduct a search on-line. You will find many Web sites where you can look up hunting clubs in your area. Before you contact any clubs, be aware that membership usually does not come free. You will probably have to pay some sort of annual or monthly fees.

There are several perks to being part of a hunting club beyond the camaraderie. Members often receive in-formation on various loca-tions and developments in

the field as well as discounts on hunting gear and equip-ment at a number of retail-ers. You might also receive information on various tour-naments in the area and the chance to represent the club at a particular one. Other perks include access to pri-vately owned lands, accom-modations at certain lodges or cabins, guided hunts and

more.

As with anything, you need to choose a hunting club carefully. Find out what type of hunting the club does. If you’re inter-ested in hunting whitetail deer using dogs, make sure the club is akin to that. If the club owns land, find out how much, where it is located, how wooded it is, what kind of game it holds and how many members use it. Ask to see records of the harvest and compare the acreage to the number of members. Most experts recommend there be no more than one member per 100 acres. Find out about any amenities of-fered on the land as well. Is there a clubhouse or at the very least some sort of shelter with electricity and water? If not, are you prepared to rough it?

There are good clubs and bad clubs. Look closely into any that interest you and know what you are getting into. The better the club, the higher the fees may be. You definite-ly get what you pay for with a hunting club.
