Neatest TIDBITS® LOOKS AT JANUARY BABIES by Kathy Wolfe All kinds of famous folks were born during the month of January. This week, Tidbits brings you a few more details about these well-known peo- ple who have a January birthday. • Showman P.T. Barnum was responsible for discovering four-year-old Charles Sherwood Stratton in 1842 and promoting him as General Tom Thumb, the world’s best-known “midget.” Barnum was reportedly a distant relative (“half fifth cousin, twice removed”) of the tiny boy, and taught him to sing, dance, mime and do impersonations. Tom was born to normal-size parents, with a birth weight of 9 pounds, 8 ounces (4.3 kg) and grew normally for his first six months. At age 4, he had not grown at all in over three years, although he was otherwise normal and healthy, with a voracious appetite. At age 9, he began to grow once again, and at 13, he stood 2 feet, 5 inches (74 cm) tall and grew to a final adult height of 3.35 feet (102 cm), weighing 71 pounds (32 kg). At age 25, Stratton married the 32-inch-tall, 29-pound Lavinia Warren in a lavish ceremony in New York City. Following the wedding, the couple greeted 2,000 guests while standing on the Metropolitan Hotel’s grand piano, followed by a trip to meet President Lincoln at the White House. More than 10,000 people attended the funeral Tom Thumb, who died suddenly of a stroke at age 45. Q. What’s the difference between a boxer and a man with a cold? A. TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

• On Jan. 24, 1935, the first canned beer goes on sale. In partnership with the American Can Company, the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company delivered 2,000 cans of Krueger's Finest Beer and Krueger's Cream Ale to Richmond, Va. It had taken two years of research to develop a can that was pressurized and had a special coating to prevent the fizzy beer from chemically reacting with the tin.

• On Jan. 27, 1965, the Shelby GT 350, a version of a Ford Mustang sports car developed by American auto racer and car designer Carroll Shelby, is launched. The Shelby GT 350 featured

a 306 horsepower V-8 engine and remained in production through the end of the 1960s.

• On Jan. 30, 1972, in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, 13 unarmed civil-rights demonstrators are shot dead by British Army paratroopers in an event that becomes known as "Bloody Sunday." The protesters, all Northern Catholics, were marching in protest of the British policy of internment of suspected Irish nationalists.

• On Jan. 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger explodes just after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Fla., killing the seven astronauts aboard. The O-ring seal on the Challenger's solid rocket booster, which had become brittle in cold temperatures, failed. Flames then broke out of the booster and damaged the external fuel tank. Within 73 seconds, the shuttle began breaking apart, then plunged into the Atlantic Ocean.(c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Great Gifts

for Men!

Merchants of GlenrockWyoming Serving Their Customers

Many of us take for granted the ease with which we can find a card at the local gift shop, have our hair coiffed at the corner salon, grab a bite at a familiar eatery or get copies made while having a friendly conversation with the proprietor. But what if it were all gone? Poof! Not if the members of the New RAMS of Glenrock can help it. In fact, many merchants are going out of their way to accommodate customers, thinking up new and innovative ways to keep the doors open and business bustling. That’s good news for consumers. Sometimes, it’s not just the price of an item or ser-vice that is the bottom line for customers, but it’s the total value of the experience. RAMS dedicated to the community and busi-nesses of Glenrock/Converse County...bringing exciting weekend events, annual celebrations and the upholding of the organiza-tion’s values to preserve and protect offers countless patrons to the district the kind hospitality, and the sense of community that is truly Glenrock. Glenrock merchants are in a class among themselves, adding character and diversity to the city while putting their customers first. Each customer experience is distinct and knowing that Glen-rock businesses care about patrons as individuals is an added benefit that is hard to come by elsewhere. don’t lose them! • The iconic 1980s video games Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man had 256 levels, though it's been reported that on both of them, the 256th level has bugs that make it unplayable.

• The earliest known examples of drinking straws were created out of gold and lapis lazuli by the ancient Sumerians. It seems they were used by royalty to drink beer, thereby avoiding the yeast residue left over from the fermentation process. • It takes 450 skilled workers to create a Steinway grand piano -- and the piano is made up of about 12,000 individual parts. • If you are like 83 percent of adult Americans, you received a gift you didn't want during the recent holiday season. • If you're a heavy coffee drinker, you might want to consider the following: A study conducted in the United Kingdom found that those who reported the highest consumption of caffeine also were more likely to report hallucinations and other extrasensory experiences. • The Campbell's Soup portraits created by Andy Warhol have become icons of the Pop Art movement, and today they sell at auction for upward of $10 million. They weren't always so well-regarded, however; in 1962, actor Dennis Hopper (a visionary art collector, it seems) purchased one of the first examples for a mere $75.***Thought for the Day: "I have known a vast quantity of nonsense talked about bad men not looking you in the face. Financial Success in 12 Simple Steps

If you need to re-set your New Year resolutions and start again, consider using the financial success list below from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). There are 12 steps in all. Check off each one as it's accomplished, perhaps one a week.1. Track spending for a month. Write down every dime you spend. At the end of the month, you'll know where your money is really going.2. Create a budget you can live with, using the figures from the above step.3. Reduce your debt. Stop using credit cards and spending money until you have your finances under control.4. Commit to save. Put away

10 percent of your take-home pay, and save any extra money until you have an emergency fund.5. Review your credit report. By law you get one free report per year from each of the big three reporting agencies.

This is your opportunity to find errors and have them fixed. Call annualcreditreport.com at 1-877-322-8228 for your free reports. It will verify via phone who you are.6. Get your FICO score. Whether you're at the top or bottom of the scale, you need to know. If your number is less than it was in the past, you need to investigate why.7. Get organized. Whether it's a shoebox or a more elaborate setup, what's important is that you know where to find things.8. Stop incurring late fees. Pay your bills on time, ideally the day you get them. Not only do late payments cost you money in fees, but too many of them on your credit report will drop your credit score.9. Stop paying overdraft fees. The more organized you are

about your finances, the less likely you are to overdraw your account. 10. Contribute to Flexible Spending Accounts or Health Savings Accounts to lower your taxable income.11. Check your insurance and be sure it covers your current needs. Ask about discounts.12. Consider refinancing your mortgage. A lower interest rate can save you money in the long run. For more information go to the NFCC website at www.DebtAdvice.org, or call 1-800-388-2227 to find a certified financial counselor. The website also has a Twitter link with a helpful hint each day. They're worth reading.
