Neatest TIDBITS® CELEBRATES BIRTHDAYS OF AUGUST BABIES by Kathy Wolfe “Happy Birthday to you!” says Tidbits to all those born in August, as we bring you some specifics about some of the more famous August babies. • U.S. Patent No. 4,136,359 was issued in January of 1979 to August baby Steve Wozniak for a “microcomputer for use with video display.” Wozniak had quit his job at Hewlett-Packard and along with Steve Jobs, formed Apple Computer in 1976. Within six years, Apple was on the prestigious Fortune 500 list. In 1981, Wozniak survived the crash of his Beechcraft Bonanza into a 12-foot embankment. He suffered from temporary amnesia as a result, with no remembrance whatsoever of the crash. • Don Ho gained fame for strumming his ukulele and singing “Tiny Bubbles,” but there was more to his life than the world of entertainment. Born of Chinese, Hawaiian, Portuguese, Dutch and German descent, he received a Bachelor of Art degree in sociology, then went on to serve with the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot. Exiting the military as a first lieutenant, he began singing in his parents’ Honolulu cocktail lounge and hit the charts with “Bubbles” in 1966. The LP containing the hit was in the Top 20 for nearly a year. turn the page for more! Q: What’s black and white and red all over: A: A sunburned zebra OVER 4 MILLION Readers Weekly Nationwide! TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

AUGUST BABIES (continued):• Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot

on the moon, turns 81 this month. Before he was an astronaut, he served as a U.S. Navy pilot, flying 78 missions over Korea at the ripe old age of 21. After leaving the Navy at 22, he graduated from Purdue University with a degree in aeronautical engineering and became a test pilot. His first space mission was in 1966 on Gemini 8. The Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Armstrong’s first words upon the craft’s landing were, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” As he stood at the bottom of the ladder before his first step, he said, “I’m going to step off the LEM now.” Then came his legendary words as he set his foot on the lunar surface, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Along with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Armstrong spent 2.5 hours exploring the moon. Shortly after the mission, he announced that he would not fly in space again and became a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

• The 7-foot, 1-inch-tall (2.2-m) Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain almost didn’t make it to the NBA. As a delicate child, he nearly lost his life to pneumonia and missed an entire year of school due to the illness. After his recovery, he didn’t care for basketball, but excelled in track and field. By the time he was 10 years old, he was already 6 feet (1.83 m) tall, and when he entered high school, he stood at 6 feet, 11 inches (2.1 m). Chamberlain played a year for the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958, with a $50,000 annual salary, before heading to Philadelphia with the NBA in 1959. In 1962, he set the long-standing record of scoring 100 points in a game, helping Philly triumph over the New York Knicks 169 to 147. When he retired, he had 31,419 career points.

AUGUST BABIES (continued):

• If you haven’t read the work of American poet Katharine Lee Bates, you’ve certainly sung it. While visiting Colorado’s Pikes Peak in 1893, the 34-year-old professor of English at Wellesley College was so moved by the view, she wrote a poem entitled “America,” which was published two years later. A church organist and choirmaster, Samuel A. Ward, composed the music, and in 1910, it was released as “America the Beautiful.”

• The words to another patriotic song were penned by an August baby, Francis Scott Key. During the War of 1812, as British troops invaded Washington, D.C., Key, the city’s 35-year-old district attorney, stood watching the attack on Fort McHenry in the midst of the Battle of Baltimore. After the smoke from the bombarding cleared, the American flag could be seen waving above the fort. On his way back to Baltimore after the battle, he began writing a poem on the back of a letter, words which would later become “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

• Terry Gene Bollea gained fame using the stage name Hulk Hogan. We know him as the star of the World Wrestling Federation, but baseball was his first love. As a high school student, he was considered the best pitcher in the Florida school system, and was being considered for the pros. He majored in business management in college, then, prior to entering the ring, spent 10 years as a professional guitarist in several bands and as a studio musician.

AUGUST BABIES (continued):• Film director M. Night Shyamalan was born

Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan in India but was raised in a wealthy Philadelphia suburb and educated at a private Episcopal Academy. He was born to a physician father and a physician mother, and his wife is also a doctor, as are nine other family members who are either MDs or Ph.Ds. Noted for movies with a strange twist at the end, he makes a cameo appearance in each film. He cites “Raiders of the Lost Ark” as his own favorite film.

• Melinda French Gates met her future husband while employed by his company, Microsoft. She had earned degrees in computer science and economics from Duke University before going to work at Microsoft, where she participated in developing some of their most celebrated products, Publisher, Encarta and Expedia. Bill and Melinda Gates met in Manhattan at a Microsoft press event. She left her job behind to raise their family.

• There was much more to Jimmy Dean than pork sausage. After serving in the U.S. Air Force in the late 1940s, he became a country singer, moving into variety show television in 1957. He frequently sat in as substitute host of “The Tonight Show.” He moved to acting in the mid-1960s and appeared in the James Bond film, “Diamonds Are Forever.” He and his brother started up the sausage company in 1969, with Dean appearing in the TV commercials. They sold to the Sara Lee Corporation in the ‘80s, but Dean continued in the ads until the corporation dismissed him in 2004, claiming that the 76 year old was too old for the job. When he died in 2010, he was buried in a 9.5-foot-long (2.7-meter), piano-shaped granite mausoleum (a $350,000 item) on his estate on the banks of the James River.

Cheaper Ways to Watch Movies at Home

For millions of families, the cost of movie night at home just went up. Netflix, the popular DVD rental company, unexpectedly raised its rates by as much as 60 percent last month. No longer can you get movies and all the streaming you want for one low price. Now the movies and the streaming have separate costs, and to get both the DVDs delivered to your door and streaming will cost more. There are other ways to watch inexpensive movies, however, if you know where to look.If you don't already have a means of streaming movies, check into the Roku [www.roku.com], a nifty little streaming box. It comes in three levels: $60, $80 and $100. Price is determined by

high-definition level (720p or 1080p), but all come with built-in wireless. Be sure to hunt around the settings to see all that's offered with Roku -- more than 300 channels with music, movies and shows.

Many of the services, such as Crackle, are free. Hulu Plus and Amazon offer inexpensive access to movies. Pandora, the movie channel, is free. You'll find EPIX movies and on-demand sports. Additionally, with Roku you'll have access (some free) to some international movies and television shows. And yes, you can access Netflix if you have the streaming option. If you only want to stream to your computer or mobile phone, check Zediva [www.Zediva.com] for $1.99 new movie rentals. And here's a bonus: You don't have to pay with a credit card on its site. You can pay with PayPal if you prefer. Bigger bonus: If you pay for a package of 10 movies, the cost drops to a dollar apiece. However, due to the way Zediva has set up its relationship with the

movie studios, only a certain number of copies of a given movie are available at any one time. Read the FAQ to be sure you understand the limits. If you're a parent and going to be in the market for a new DVD player soon, consider getting one of the inexpensive combo DVD and VCR players. You can save money on the kids' movies by shopping yard sales, where you can find hundreds of older VHS movies for a fraction of the cost of the DVD version. (You'll also be less upset when the kids unwind a movie tape than you would be if they scratch a new DVD.)

Is it really better to use plastic bags instead of paper at grocery stores? Not really. The monetary cost may be less, but the environment suffers when so many plastic bags get loose. Most of us have seen plastic bags flying in the wind, ending up on fences or in trees, littering otherwise attractive natural surroundings. One alternative is to use cloth bags.

People from all over the world visit the Dead Sea for its spas. There are many claims touting the benefits of the region’s solar radiation and climatic conditions, oxygen-enriched atmosphere, mineral-rich salty water, thermo-mineral springs and a therapeutic black mud. Supposedly the Queen of Sheba was the first to believe that the Dead Sea had healing powers, and Cleopatra had the world’s first spa built there.

Some scientists working on an island in the Pacific were chatting when one wondered aloud: “Our supplies should be arriving shortly. Why is it that if you transport something by car, it’s called a shipment, but when it is transported by ship, it’s called cargo? Doesn’t that seem a little backwards?”

A Chilean flamingo named “Pink Floyd” wintered at the Great Salt Lake in Utah after escaping from Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City in 1987. He (gen-der uncertain) continued to live in the wild, surviving on brine shrimp. Floyd was last seen in 2005 in Idaho.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:TEAM HOYT

As if running a marathon wasn’t difficult enough, the father/son team of Dick and Rick Hoyt has a few added challenges. But this Massachusetts duo is extraordinary, as you’ll soon learn as you read up on their legendary road. • Dick and Judy Hoyt were given disturbing news

on the day their son Rick was born. The baby’s umbilical cord had tangled around his neck, blocking the flow of oxygen. This damaged his brain to the extent that it was unable to send messages to Rick’s muscles, with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Doctors advised the Hoyts to place Rick in an institution, as he would always remain in a vegetative state. However, the Hoyts were encouraged by the fact that the baby’s eyes followed them when they moved and refused to give up on him.

• As Rick grew, although he was confined to a wheelchair, his mother worked with him hours every day, teaching him the alphabet. At age 11, he received a special computer that enabled him to communicate, allowing him to attend public school. Rick received a degree in special education from Boston University at age 31 and went to work at Boston College’s computer lab, developing communication systems for the disabled.

• The father/son running team got its start as a result of another’s disability. Fifteen-year-old Rick heard of a five-mile run slated to benefit a young lacrosse player paralyzed in an auto accident. Rick approached his dad about participating, and, although not a runner, 37-year-old Dick pushed his son the entire distance in his wheelchair, finishing second to last. After hearing Rick comment, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped,” Dick began running on a daily b a s i s . When Rick was in school, Dick added a bag of cement to the wheelchair for his daily runs.

3rd Quarter 2011Week 32

Aug 7 - Aug 13Page 6

TEAM HOYT (continued): • That first five-mile run was in 1977. By 2010,

the pair had competed in more than 1,030 competitive events, including 68 marathons and six Ironman triathlons. The 2009 Boston Marathon marked their 1000th race and the 25th time they had completed that event. Dick Hoyt was 69 years old when he pushed Rick across the finish line!

• The highlight of their athletic career came in 1992 when they spent 45 days running and biking coast to coast across the 3,735 miles (6,011 km) of the United States.

• When competing in triathlons, for the swimming portion, Dick pulls his son in a custom-designed boat with a bungee cord attached to the waist of his vest for two and a half miles (3.86 km). During the cycling segment of the event, Rick rides in a special seat of a custom tandem bike for 112 miles (180.25 km), followed by the running, during which Dick pushes Rick in his wheelchair for 26.2 miles (42.2 km).

• In 2010, Dick’s book “Devoted: The Story of a Father’s Love for his Son” was published, chronicling their family’s efforts to overcome the obstacles of having a child with disabilities. Dick likes to emphasize the fact that even with cerebral palsy, Rick has “accomplished things that would seriously challenge most people.”
