THE VENUE Wits School of Education, University of the Witwatersrand 27 St Andrews Road, Parktown, Johannesburg.

Gauteng Province Gauteng (the Sotho word for "Place of Gold"), is the commercial and industrial powerhouse of the country and indeed of Southern Africa. Gauteng is a cosmopolitan, multicultural mix of people from all walks of life, from all corners of the world. Gauteng's main attraction is big business, but there is so much more ... museums, galleries, historical battlefields. Gauteng is also an entertainment playground offering world-class restaurants, shebeens, shopping malls and music venues. Congress 2011 will be held in Johannesburg, popularly known as Jo'burg, Jozi, or the City of Gold - “Egoli” - a vibrant melting pot of humanity with many cultural and leisure attractions. Johannesburg, “Africa’s most cosmopolitan city”, is the wealthiest and most entertaining city in South Africa, founded in 1886 with the discovery of gold.

University of Witwatersrand The University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), established in 1896, is located in Johannesburg - the vibrant, culturally diverse and leading commercial city on the African continent. Over the years Wits has become internationally recognised for its academic excellence and extensive research activities linked to its five Faculties (Commerce, Law & Management, Engineering & the built Environment, Health Science, Humanities; Science). Over 3 000 courses are offered to about 18 000 students. Over a third of the student body comprises post graduate students. Wits exceeds the national norms in terms of enrolments in the Science, Engineering and Technology fields and is also ranked in the top 1% in the world in seven defined fields of research according to the 2007 ISI international rankings. Wits University is home to 14 NRF 'A-rated' scientists, based on a stringent evaluation of an individual scientist's research record over five years.

PLENARY SPEAKERS Karin Brodie (SA) is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Wits. Her research is in mathematics classroom interactions and the ways in which teachers can support quality mathematical thinking among students. She is currently principal investigator of the Data Informed Practice Improvement Project (DIPIP), a teacher development project which works to develop professional learning communities. In these communities, teachers investigate their learners’ errors and then decide together what they need to learn in order to address common learner errors. She has recently published a book: Teaching mathematical reasoning in secondary schools. In her plenary address, Karin will lead a presentation focused on sharing the workings of DIPIP teacher development sessions.

Gugu Moche (SA) is currently the Director for the School of Science at the University of South Africa. She completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science in the United States. Her Ph.D. in Mathematics was obtained from Howard University in Washington DC. Her research focus is in the area of compactification, in particular the Stone-Cech compactification, and she has published in this area. Dr Moche takes a keen interest in supporting FET students through Matric-level mathematics. Her plenary talk is entitled ‘Why Calculus Matters’.

Stephen Sproule (USA) has been a part of many curriculum committees working on the national mathematics curricula over the past seven year. He worked on the early grade 9 CTA’s, and the Mathematics and Advanced Programme Mathematics curricula. He led the mathematics department at St John’s College for 10 years. He has recently taken a position as Mathematics Master Teacher in the UTeaChattanooga teacher education programme at the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga. Stephen is crazy about mathematics, about teaching mathematics and about watching eyes light up with mathematical excitement. In his plenary session, Stephen will present a session on the range of careers that are opened up through the study of mathematics.

Marlene Sasman (SA) is the Provincial Coordinator for Dinaledi Schools and Mathematics, Science & Technology (MST) strategy in the Western Cape. She was the Convenor of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) Writing Team and has also been serving as a member of the Mathematics Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) writing team. She was the Convenor of the National Senior Certificate Mathematics Examining Panel and is currently the National Mathematics Internal Moderator for Grade 12 Examinations. In this conference, she shares valuable insights gained out of her work on analysis of assessment and identification of cognitive obstacles in delivering the curriculum.

HOT TOPICS PANEL DISCUSSIONS

The focus in the ‘Hot Topics’ discussions is to promote incisive debate on topical issues in the mathematics education field with invited key players who can open up insights that are valuable for the community to engage with and question. PANEL 1:

Chair: Hamsa Venkat Panellists:

Mamokgethi Setati, Raymond Duba, Aarnout Brombacher & Moses Mogamberry

AMESA’s Role in Relation to Research and Development in Mathematics Education – Conversations with Past Presidents Mathematics performance in South Africa continues to be described as being in a state of ‘crisis’. What role should AMESA be playing to improve this situation in relation to research and development in the field? Past presidents present their views, ask questions of each other, and answer questions from the audience. Introduction by current AMESA President – Elspeth Khembo PANEL 2:

Chair: Panellists:

Michael De Villiers Alison Kitto, Jaamia Galant/Heather Collins

Geometry in the CAPS documents A key change in the FET CAPS document is the reinsertion of Euclidean geometry into the core curriculum. Alongside this, concerns have been raised that the GET CAPS are ‘geometry lite’. The panel discuss geometry as it appears across the GET and FET bands in the new CAPS curriculum documents. PANEL 3:

Chair: Lynn Bowie Panellists:

Marlene Sasman and Regina Essack

Learning from learner performance: Can we disseminate information more effectively? Patterns of performance, patterns of errors, messages for teaching -a focus on Algebra In some provinces, analyses of Matric performance are conducted on an item-by-item level. Such data provides information that is useful to the teaching of Matric topics, but dissemination of this information is patchy. What sorts of information are available? How can this information be disseminated to schools? How can it be used by Maths departments?

EXHIBITS AND MATHS MARKET Publishers, entrepreneurs and NGOs are invited to exhibit their commercial products and services in a stand in the exhibition hall, to present and promote their products in a Maths Market session during the academic programme.
